Not what I expected.......2007-08-31
I looked forward to the publication of this book, because I had seen and been impressed by the author's clothing. However, it turned out to be a disappointment in many ways. There are some very good instructions, especially on using sequins, but most of the book is given over to a number of designs which I guess are for use on clothing. I found most of them completely uninspiring and I wish more space had been given to techniques.
Excellent beading reference.......2007-06-28
A very comprehensive and excellently produced introduction to beading techniques. Highly recommended as the first reference book for someone starting beading and keen to produce interesting and high quality projects.
Designer Bead Embroidery.......2007-06-27
The designs are inspiring and some of the most original I've seen in any of my collection of bead embroidery books. I haven't tried to reproduce any as yet as it is on loan to a friend who wants a costume for her glass walking act beaded. She is a local performer here in Las Vegas and we are going to make her sparkle with beads.
Disappointing.......2007-06-08
This book is very disappointing. The use of word "designer" on the title is being abused and misled customers. All samples and pattern illustrated in the book are unbearable, old-fashioned, un-creative and un-inspirational. I feel sorry for having it.
Beading.......2007-05-14
This is a great bead book to own. Lots of interesting and unusual bead designs. Photos are wonderful.

meh.......a little disappointed.......2007-10-06
I ordered this book because I had seen a pic of a gorgeous zipper quilt that someone made from the pattern in it. (It's the design on the book cover).
In my opinion the rest of the quilt designs inside (except for maybe one other)are ho-hum and just don't have the charm and interest of the traditional quilt block layouts.
The book has good instructions and templates...tips and advice on quiltmaking from start to finish, help on choosing fabrics and colors.
There are instructions for making the quilts in several sizes, wall hanging, twin, full, and queen. It would be nice to see a few with instructions for a crib, toddler quilt size ( about 45x60).
A good book, perhaps, for someone who is tired of the traditional quilts (as if !!) and wants to try something a little different.
Modern Quilt Workshop - Wonderful Book!.......2007-09-30
This quilt book is wonderful! I am not a modern quilt lover, but this book isn't artsy modern, it is full of clean line quilt patterns that lend themselves to a wide variety of themed fabrics. I have made two quilts in this book and used vintage fabrics for one and bright colors for the other - both turned out wonderful! The instructions are clear and easy to understand. This book is WELL worth the price!
Refreshing.......2007-06-11
This book is refreshing simply because it doesn't go over the same old quilt patterns - no nine patch or log cabin here! Quilts can be modern AND beautiful! I enjoy this book because it helped me understand more about color and fabric choice. It inspired me to take more chances in my quilting. I enjoyed the voice in which this book was written. It was very easy to understand and the quilts are beautiful and achievable.
Great for ideas & learning.......2007-05-30
I like the layout of this book. It is easy to read, and also ranks the difficulty of the project. The back of the book has cutting templates, how to care for your quilt, how to bind the quilt, and a whole lot of info about cutting & piecing. I am glad I bought the book. Some of the projects aren't really my style (such as the 'book club', 'once upon a time' or 'confetti') but the other quilt projects look pretty nice. I was hoping for more quilting projects - the book isn't too thick - but I suppose you could get creative and branch off what they do here. Love all the color combinations they show. The information in the back of the book is great, and I think that alone made it worth the purchase.
Not your mother's quilt book........2007-04-23
Modern, simple, classic and simply beautiful quilts. The instructions seem clear, though I have not made anything from this book yet. All quilts are rated on a 1-5 scale from basic to advanced skills, and there are different colorways shown for each quilt as well as info for varying sizes. There is also a tip section.

Book Description
Embroidery machines have captured the imagination of sewing enthusiasts everywhere, and now, Jeanine Twigg's second Companion Project Series book combines fleece-- the most in demand fabric-- with embroidery! Fleece offers the perfect canvas for embroidery creativity. Twigg has teamed up with industry expert Nancy Cornwall to present another exciting Fleece adventure.
Cornwell begins with the basics-- covering the "how tos" for machine embroidery success, and then she cleverly explores new territories as embroidery designs to create surface interest with a variety of techniques, such as trapunto effects, "embossing," applique, and terrific new ways to take advantage of embroidery and fleece to create surface texture.
Readers will learn how to use one design for a multitude of fleece embroidery techniques and how to create spectacular effects by using different elements of a motif.

Great Resource.......2003-01-12
This book covers almost everything a machine embroiderer needs to know about embroidering on fleece. Many innovative techniques are covered by fleece expert Nancy Cornwell. The designs included on the CD are really good and can be used in many ways. In addition, Cornwell tells you how to use the designs you already have, both as they come and by taking them apart. She also covers what kinds of designs work best for fleece. The book becomes a springboard for your own creativity.
If you already have Cornwell's books on using Polar Fleece, this book is not redundant. It expands on the previous work the author has done in those books as to combining machine embroidery with fleece.

Instruction & Inspiration on Advanced Needlepoint Techniques.......2007-05-18
For people who have watched her Needlearts show on PBS, Shay and her wonderful way with all forms of needlework needs no introduction. For those who haven't let's just say that Shay is one of the nicest and most innovative needleworkers around.
This beautiful book distills much of Shay's wisdom covering Goldwork, painted canvas and shading. Each section is lavishly illustrated with detailed explanations of techniques. I'm not very familiar with Goldwork, stil I found Shay's explanations clear enough so that I would feel confident tackling a beginner's project. There is a charming one, a dove, in the book.
The section on painted canvas has a good overview of threads and
techniques. It includes detailed instructions on techniques which
often aren't covered, stripped threads, using a laying tool, and
properly starting and ending threads. A wonderful part of this
section talks about choosing the right canvas. Further information
covers how to change colors on a painted canvas as well as several
techniques for optically mixing colors.
Following this chapter about painted canvas is a chapter which goes
into depth discussing how three different painted canvas Christmas
stockings were stitched. Several pages are devoted to each canvas
with a picture of the entire canvas as well as close-up pictures of
the details. Even if these three Tapestry Tent designs aren't your
cup of tea, you will find many ideas for using on your own canvases.
The section on shading covers two different techniques to create
realistic shading. While the techniques were developed for surface
embroidery, a part of this section shows how they can be applied to
canvas. In fact, the shaded canvas piece is photographed on the
cover of the book.
The book ends with a gallery of designs. Each of the pieces in the
gallery shows Shay's consummate skill as a designer and stitcher.
They provide much food for inspiration.
While this book is not a book for beginners. Every stitcher will
learn useful information and find plenty of inspiration in this
wonderful book.
Most Beautiful Book in My [very large] Collection.......2005-09-12
This is "the" book for the serious needleworker. It has the most comprehensive technique instructions of any book, ever, for gold work, painted canvas, and shading; it isn't a cutesy book of simple projects. The illustrations are excellent. The color photos are to die for: closeups of step-by-step work in progress and examples of finished work will enable you to strive for excellence in your own work. This is a teaching book with important information about threads, fabrics, frames, tools, framing up, tips ... the list goes on and on. I can't recommend this book any higher.
Not what I expected.......2004-11-06
This book does offer insight into shading and goldwork techniques, but has few, if any, practice projects. The pictures are very lovely, but I was led to believe that there would be more patterns to practice on.
If you are looking for a book with projects, minimally practice projects, this book is not the one to buy. No projects, thus no materials and fibers listed, no patterns.
As a non professional needlework enthusiast, I need a head start on any project, because I don't have time to design a project from start to finish; books with projects offer the headstart I think most people in my position need: the hard work is done (which is why we pay for the book) and it is left to the individual needlework enthusiast to tweek it here and there to fit his or her decor/color favorites/personalization, etc. This book does not save any time or give any headstart to any project, which is the reason people pay money to the professional needleworker for their efforts. These efforts have not been made in this book.
I would say a person looking for a book in goldwork or embroidery (shading, with silk or wool) would be much better off buying "A Victorian Floral Alphabet" "Redoutes Finest Flowers in Embroidery"; "The Art of Painting with a Needle"; these books make beautiful, individualized embroidery projects a possibility for those of us who don't have the time to start from scratch.
This book is the equivalent to buying a pair of stamped pillow cases or a tablecloth to embroider, but when you get the pillowcases or tablecloth, they are blank, there is no design stamped on them, and the manufacturer includes instructions on how to embroider them.
Excellent Reference Volume.......2004-06-04
For the serious needleworker, Shay Pendray's Inventive Needlework is a must-have book. Included are discussions on materials and on techniques, clearly drawn diagrams, and excellent color photographs. Examples of various techniques are drawn from both the author's own teaching pieces and from other pieces which have been exhibited at ANG National Seminars. I was particularly excited by the close-up photographs, which show stitching details clearly. (Many of the goldwork photographs were stitched on a black ground) Note that this book is about techniques, and is not a catalog of diagrams for specific stitches - there are many other reference books which fill that purpose.
For needleworkers who are interested in advancing their skills, or who have wished for opportunities to examine advanced-level stitching in detail, the excellent photographs and elaborating text of this book offer a great deal of inspiration.
Book Description
In bygone times, the style of raised embroidery called stumpwork was the culmination of a young woman's education. Jane Nicholas, a leading modern embroiderer, has researched stumpwork for more than 20 years to create this dazzling compendium of its intricate techniques and colorful 3-dimensional effects. Beginning with detailed instructions on different ways of creating raised padded shapes, she goes on to offer a virtual cornucopia of nature-based designs--flowers, fruits, birds, animals, and insects--arranged in delightfully realistic patterns and interspersed with charming quotations. Elegant, useful, and inspiring, her book is a must-have for all dedicated embroiderers.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic, but not for beginners.......2006-02-14
If you don't have a lot of stumpwork or embroidery experience then I suggest this is not the book for you. While the designs are lovely and there are step by step instructions (and it is great value as it is two books combined in one), as a beginner myself I am now looking for something a little easier before tackling projects from this book again.
Thank you to Jane Nicholas.......2005-10-25
Photography is again supurb! Directions are clear, list of materials thorough and easy to follow although some brand names are not available in the USA but can be substituted with others. What a great addition to a "Fancy Work" library.
Caution.......2005-08-11
Gorgeous book, vintage Nicholas - HOWEVER, please be advised that this is merely a combination of her Stumpwork Embroidery Designs & Projects and Stumpwork Embroidery Fruits Flowers & Insects. There are no new projects. No review that I have read bothers to mention this.

Customer Reviews:
Worst Instructions Ever.......2006-05-05
I am in the middle of making the first ball, what is supposed to be the easy ball. I don't understand what she is talking about. she is referring to the points on the ball with jargon that she has never defined, as far as I have found searching through the introduction. I am currently trying to do something called a herringbone stitch, but the only reference to how to do it are very simple line drawings of the preliminary stitches. At this point I have decided to just make up my own method that will look as much like the completed ball as possible. If I was going to have to just make up my own method, though, why did I get this book?!
This text would be improved significantly if the author would be more clear in her terminology (e.g. what exactly does AH refer to??) and including photographs, at least for the first pattern, of someone going through the process of making it, especially with regard to this herringbone stitch.
Disappointing Instructions.......2006-04-23
As others have pointed out, the instructions in this otherwise beautiful book are sorely lacking. I've done several Temari balls from Diana Vandervoort's first book, and had no problems. However, even doing the first one in Diamond's book left me very frustrated. She does not tell you how many rounds to make of each color, so you're left to try to count the threads from the photos. Not a good way to do it.
I'm going to purchase the next Vandervoort book...perhaps that will make me feel better about the whole craft!
Good source of ideas.......2005-02-02
I have two Temari ball books; one by Diane V (for beginners) and this one. Some of the instructions are hard to follow; sometimes I looked at the pictures and guessed about what to do. There isn't a lot of detail about how to start or end a thread, how many wraps to make, when to change colors, etc. And a couple patterns seem to be missing steps. But if you've learned to make Temari balls already, this book has beautiful, inspiring designs. One comment on her technique is that she has you start with a polystyrene ball and cover it with thread (without a batting layer or a yarn layer). This is a very slow way to start! And I think the batting layer and thread layer help anchor the knots in the balls making the finished product more secure.
I loved it!.......2004-03-12
I was completely new to temari when I found this book in the bookstore, and I fell in love in an instant! I have worked a number of the patterns, both simple and complex, and have had no problems at all. I especially like that there is such a variety of patterns to choose from, some other books out there will only give you less than 10 patterns per book.I would absolutely recomend it!
Pass on this one.......2003-11-30
No one should buy this book - especially a beginner. I learned the hard way. There are much better books on the subject. Pass on this one and save your money.

Great designs!.......2007-01-13
I love this book for the designs! If you are looking for White Work eye candy you will be disappointed it has no photographs of white work other than the front cover. This is a simple book and if you look at the price it reflects that as well. Still it is a wonderful book just for the designs alone, which can be used with any embroidery not just in white work. I enjoyed reading about the history and how stitches are used for white work. The only thing that really makes white work any different is that it is done in all white thread on white fabric and when you work in 1 color you need to use different stitches to create texture and make your embroidery interesting.
The author suggests stitches for use with the patterns but they are only recommendations. I do wish there was a few examples to "see" what has been explained but that is not needed in order to use the patterns or to try creating your own white work.
Overall for the price this book is worth it for the patterns and a little bit of white work history and ideas.
Take the title LITERALLY.......2005-11-01
I am disappointed by this book. There are no real life pictures of what can be done with this technique - only the cover. It does provide the history, how to do the stitches and a lot of patterns that can be transferred as the "Techniques and 188 Designs" in the title promises. However there is no challenge or inspiration to apply this art.
A lovely introduction........2001-04-07
I had never tried whitework before buying this book, but I am glad to own it. It contains a good introduction to the stitches involved in whitework. I found I couldn't put it away - I actually wound up embroidering quilt squares so that I could try as many of the stitches as possible. It helps to have a previous background in sewing and embroidery, but this is a good way to branch out.
I have really enjoyed owning this book.......1999-06-24
The introduction consist of the history of white work, materials for white work, and transferring the designs. Intructions for white work stitches includes stem, chain, lazy daisy, running, backstitch, straight stitch, seeding, satin, padded satin, long-and-short, french knots, overcast, buttonhole, feather, herringbone, chevon, star, shadow, couching, and lattice filling. The designs are beautiful. The only thing I find wrong is it's paperback. With use though the years it will fall apart. Get your stapler ready!
Book Description
Punchneedle embroidery is a creative needle art in which thread is literally punched through cloth with a special needle. The design is transferred onto the back of the fabric, which is stretched tightly in a hoop. Using a threaded punch needle, a small running stitched is work on the back of the fabric to outline or fill in the design. This stitch forms a loop on the front of the fabric. Different lengths of loops are created with different sizes of needles. The basic technique can be learned very quickly. The tools and techniques are similar to those used to make rugs with bulky wool yarn only they've been miniaturized. The craft has been described as "embroidery on steroids." Traditionally it is used to create folk art designs, but needle arts designers are starting to create more contemporary designs, and the crafters are jumping on board. This book is a fresh take on punchneedle embroidery, a very vast, very flexible technique to apply color and texture to cloth. Punchneedle designs can be turned into patches to embellish everything from jeans to bags. They can become cards, pins, or journal covers. They can be fused or sewn into all kinds of craft projects.
