Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Carpentry book that I recommend owning first.........2005-01-12

"Carpentry" by Larry Haun, is the Number 1 book that I recommend owning first when beginning carpenters, homeowners, and do-it-yourselfers ask me about learning different aspects of this trade. I also tell these folks that this book, in particular, is well written, easy to understand, and filled with high-quality color photographs and drawings, that help make clear what this Master Carpenter is teaching on the subject of basic carpentry.
In addition to the above, I'm asked this question many times as my crew and I frame or remodel homes in our state of Minnesota: "What other books do you recommend buying to help us learn more about homebuilding and fixing-up our home?" I tell these folks that they can be assured of finding additional high-quality, informative books from the publishers at Taunton Press, and Fine Homebuilding.
I tell the carpenters that ask me the same question to check out Larry Haun's book titled, "The Very Efficient Carpenter," also published by Taunton Press, as their next step in becoming more efficient as working carpenters.

5 out of 5 stars great tool for the beginning carpenter.......2004-09-01

this is an excellent primer on stick framing, covering everything from tools to layouts of floors, walls, ceilings and roofs. nothing about shingling, drywalling, plastering, etc. - just framing. that's the strength of this book, in the depth of its treatment of the subject. nicely illustrated, there are at least two or three photos or useful diagrams per page. the book's a big step up from your usual how-to, as the author ties in his own personal building experiences, in ways that illustrate the logic of methods and practices.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Tools You Could Buy.......2003-06-05

"Homebuilding Basics: Carpentry" may just be one of the best
carpentry tools you could buy. Larry Haun, a production framer
and carpentry teacher for over 45 years, wanted to "share with
others what I have learned from my teachers." He has certainly
succeeded.

He begins by covering both hand and power tools and explaining
how to choose one version over another depending on the task.
Safety tips and tricks for more effective use are presented in
sidebars.

The jobsite section explains the frame structure of a typical
home in detail: nomenclature, whys and wherefors, and sequence
of tasks.

Next, Haun moves through the actual frame construction from the
foundation sill through the completion of the structure and basic
finishing in sections on framing floors, walls and ceilings, roofs,
stairs and finish details.

This large, well-organized handbook will prove invaluable to anyone
planning to build a home, remodel one, or simply wanting to be able

to recognize proper framing methods and high quality work. It
provides an introduction, list of sources for tools, supplies and
books and an index as well as a slew of excellent illustrations.

Larry Haun currently teaches carpentry in Coos Bay, Oregon and is
the author of "The Very Effectient Carpenter" and a long-time
contributor to "Fine Homebuilding Magazine".

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended...........2002-08-13

This book is the best I've ever seen as a teaching tool on this subject. It assumes no prior knowledge, everything is very clearly written, and the illustrations make it simple to understand. (In fact, if you scanned through the book and only studied the pictures and read their captions, you would learn a great deal without reading the book's text.)

If you choose to buy this book, it's money well spent.

3 out of 5 stars first time framers and apprentices line up.......2000-03-27

I would recommend this book to beginning framers, apprentices, and homeowners who want to learn to do there own work. Professional carpenters and journeyman should pass it by. The book itself is very well layed out and complete. It is rather low tech and somewhat dated in the new world of 'hurricane and earthquake' code requirements. But, I like it. it does not promise more than it delivers and what it delivers in content is well presented.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars no basics.......2003-08-28

Many of the chapters in this book are written by individual carpenters who "do things their own way". For instance, in the first chapter, the writer says to disregard previous techniques and use his method. In the 2nd and 3rd chapters, the writer talks about using power tools that are either outrageously expensive or not even avilable any more. Further, there is no discussion or summary of basic roof geometry and calculations. The tag phrase "for pros by pros" is quite misleading. It is merely 15 chapters of guys telling how THEY frame a roof. Anyone, even pro carpenters using this as a refresher, should start off with a tutorial on basic roof geometry, design, and construction methods. If you are looking for info on how to properly design and construct roof framing, don't waste your money on this one!

5 out of 5 stars Good reference for stick roofs.......2003-04-23

In recent years, the roof has become the focal point of many NA homes. No longer content with simple styles, rangy, monstrous roofs are the norm. Additionally many of them are likely to be built with either trusses, or maybe manufactured wood sticks. These techniques shave dollars right into the developers pockets. And frankly have become the norm in the last 5 to 10 years. They aren't much covered in this book.

The reality is that these new story and a half high, architect/engineer designed truss roofs, factory manufactured, and crew/crane installed are a little much for the average homeowner.

On the other hand, if you want to cut your own roof, this comparatively recent book gives you all the info you will need to build 2x roofs in many styles. It's a good basic reference, that covers a lot of procedural detail. I find it very useful. If you are only looking for a roof's worth of studs, you will have no difficulty finding the materials for a stick built roof, of generally higher quality than the truss roofs so popular today.

    2 out of 5 stars where's the info.......2003-04-06

The rafter jig idea was great, but there just wasn't enough info and detail to actually build it (I thought). I must admit, I'am not a pro as this book "by pros for pros" claims, but I guess if I was a pro, then I would probably find the information in this book to be too elementary. This book is ok for learning roof basics, but it's not enough info and detail to fully learn all that's involved with building roofs.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It helps, but this book is not comprehensive........2005-05-27

Being new to carpentry, I purchased this book to get aquainted with finish work. Previous reviewers spoke of this book being outdated and I agree. However, as an apprentice, I found useful methods including tips for scribing and fitting interior finishes. Putting these methods in the back of my mind has facilitated my work.

The organization of material is haphazard at best. This is not a textbook, but a collection of articles from Fine Homebuilding magazine. If you are looking to familiarize yourself with some basic techniques and universal situations in finish carpentry, this book will be a decent start. For the experienced carpenter, look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Not Very Accurate.......2004-06-13

I was completely new to hanging molding. This book will cover what you need in order to cut crown molding (molding closest to the ceiling), however, do not expect to learn how to chair rail or baseboard molding correctly. In my opinion, theis book, "touches" on the subjects, thus not providing enough info to get your job done as efficently as possible.

To restate the point on crown molding: This book will teach you a mathematical formula so you can hang ANY size crown molding correctly.

All in all, there are about 6 pages in this book that helped me out a bunch, but its definately not worth the buy. The book is EXTREMELY OUTDATED! They speak of Pnuematic nail guns (no one uses them anymore.) In addition, a COMPOUND MITER SAW will get your job done in a snap as compared to using a POWER box or POWER saw.

Craig savage came out with a DVD this year (2004). I'm going to purchase it and see if its any help.

    David

2 out of 5 stars Not if you want detailed explanations of trimwork...........2002-03-11

I'm a big fan of Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking so I figured this was a great opportunity to capture some very useful information on "how to" (as the book is billed) install trim work. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. The book's articles are dated (pneumatic nail gun review from several years ago!) and not all apply to trim work. To make matters worse, there are not too many detailed tips to actually use. Just short articles which merely touch on the subjects. Definitely not worth the money if you're looking for any sort of ideas or lessons on finish carpentry.

I bought this book 'hot' off of my first project, my Joints needed help, and I loved to use the router - the title just sold the book to me.

I wouldn't clasify this book as a beginer book, nor would I say it's an advanced book. However it does have something for everybody, and it's very easy to follow.

Personally I think that every beginer wanting to do more than plywood boxes should pick up a copy. It starts you out with basics of a router (good to read before you buy one, though not diffinitive in that area).

This book really shines with all the stuff that a beginer doesn't know to worry about - how different boards are sawn from the log, and how that effects the way that they shrink/expand. How to plan your project so that the changing seasons do not cause it to self destruct. While this sounds out of the scope for a beginer - it is very easy to understand and will help anybody (short of a seasoned pro) get the most out of their work. And this is all before the basics of joining wood.

When it comes to the different joints the book is layed out from easiest to most complex. You can work to the back of the book as your skill and knowledge improve.

Everybody should have it, and beginers should not feel intimidated by it!

5 out of 5 stars Much information to be gleaned!.......2001-11-30

I can't think of anything to add that the prior reviewers didn't say already. It's very well written, and easy to read and follow the diagrams. There are plans for versatile but simple to build and use jigs.

This book has inspired my woodworking and also helped me simplify many processes. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and easy to follow...........2001-01-11

I came across this book originally in a bookstore. I thumbed through it, and read bits and pieces. Then I got online, and ordered it...it was cheaper...I've purchased several woodworking and handyman type books in the last 3 or 4 years, and this book ranks up with the best. It is very easy to read, and the author does not assume the reader has volumes of prior knowledge, like some other books do. It starts out describing types of routers, and bits, moves onto what can be done with each type. And, the segway into joinery is seamless. It is well written for both beginner and experienced woodworkers alike.
