Book Description

Practical, real-world solutions to lockouts. Learn to open doorknobs, deadbolts, car doors, padlocks, handcuffs, et cetera. This book sold out as "Lock Bypass Methods," and has proven to be the best manual on keyless entry available. Since your resources are usually on the other side of the door when you're locked out, it shows how to improvise tools from garbage and common, everday items. Multiple entrance options are provided in case of stubborn doors or limited materials. Thousands of people have successfully opened doors using techniques they learned in "Lock Bypass Methods." This expanded edition has more illustrations and new techniques.

This book will not waste your time trying to explain how to pick sidebar locks, or activate magnetic-stripe readers without a key card. It DOES explain how to open doors protected by these locks, simply and without damage, through bypass techniques. A latch holds something shut, and a lock is a gateway to that latch. This book teaches ways to climb over the fence and ignore the gate. You will learn how to pick locks, a skill that works 60-70% of the time. More importantly, you will learn methods to trip actuators, move linkage rods, take advantage of mechanical design flaws, exploit tolerances in a lock's setting, and other practical means of entry.

The book's focus is on problem solving, not presenting methods that are too difficult to accomplish. Many other books in this field suffer from too much theory and too little delivery. If it doesn't work, it isn't in here. This book is designed to give the reader skills that open locks without keys or damage. It is not a whitewashed or glossed-over set of instructions that leave a reader feeling as if failure is his fault and he just hasn't developed some special esoteric talent. Difficulties encountered in opening methods are identified, explained, and solutions are given to cope with them. The book is clearly written and illustrated, and covers problem solving, how locks work, picking, bypassing, and tool making. If you are interested in opening locks without keys, you should have this book.

5 out of 5 stars Good ideas.......2007-03-09

Helped me understand various lock systems better. I appreciated the innovative ideas the author presented, many of which actually may have a hope of working in the real world. Definitely has a MacGyver-esque quality to it, without being hokey and completely unfeasible.

5 out of 5 stars Far from easy ...........2004-12-09

I had been trying to open an old S&L moneybox for some time - the lock mechanism is "simple" per this book. Curiosity can be frustrating. I didn't want to spend any money on tools for a one off project (I ended up doing this and bought another book). The intellectual satisfaction was worth it. I'm interested in antiques so may get some payback for learning in the future. (I can now also open simple padlocks, and furniture locks, with an improvised tool in fairly quick time.)

The information on getting into a locked car is easy to follow; I knew some of this before buying the book but the process will be easier in future. The stuff on handcuffs also appears straightforward - if you use them for business or pleasure - I don't - this could be worth reading.

This is a practical book but hard work and requires practice. Worth reading if you have a real interest in locks and will practice. Not for beginers; I bought this book first then came back to it.

4 out of 5 stars Just about there........2004-09-20

personally im only interested in picking locks and this book does help abit, but it focuses more on bypassing security systems and teaches you how.

the paragraphing is kinda compact and so are the instructions and diagrams for me- someone with little technical background.

a good read for the hot and lazy afternoon or those boring plane trips.

5 out of 5 stars Informative book.......2004-02-25

Even though it is quite a small book, it's one that is highly recommended. Some of the items are obvious, while others are helpful and make you think about your surroundings or for just utilizing cheap alternatives to professional tools that might not be in your bag of tricks. For example, the author says to use a cut out of a clear 2liter bottle for a plug remover to hold the pins & springs, while seeing what is going on through the clear plastic. Neat idea and not obvious to all.

I'm just a novice at picking, but learning quite rapidly. There are exercises to improve your skills.

The only thing bad I can say about the book is the first chapter. Long winded, but basically states the following: 1) picking what you aren't supposed to is illegal and will get you into trouble, 2) don't be egotistical and show off to your friends thinking you can pick anything, and 3) practice practice practice, that's the only way you'll be proficient in lock bypassing & picking.

5 out of 5 stars Lockpicking 301.......2004-02-12

This book ought to be the third level for someone who is interested in learning how to pick locks though it contains
information which may be useful to anyone. From this book one can learn how to develop and use a number of common items to unlock locks of a variety of sorts whether the lock be on a car or a house. Though I am not a locksmith, I have been practicing lockpicking for some time because somebody always forgets the keys. Conkel's book contains a number of ideas which will open locks easily which had never occurred to me.

5 out of 5 stars Just like it says.......2007-02-03

It's all in there, just like it says. If you want to know about locks and locksmithing, this is a good book to have.

5 out of 5 stars Virgina Locksmith.......2005-11-04

I have several editions of "the Complete Book of Locks and Locksmithing." They're all good. I've learned a lot from them. But the sixth edition is by far the best. I especially like the sections on lock picking, impressioning, and selling safes.

2 out of 5 stars Far from a complete guide.......2003-08-22

I wasn't terribly impressed by this book - it was missing a great deal of basic information, had very incompletely coverage about such traditional skills such as picking locks, manually cutting keys, etc. Instead the author emphasises circumventing locks through alternative methods (for example by shearing off retaining bolts/screws and pulling a core). I found the coverage of large number of locks helpful for locks that I have not come in contact with, but overall I was not very impressed by this book.

1 out of 5 stars Not for beginners or the curious.......2002-09-30

I'm not sure just how this book earned such high praise from supposedly learned people. Or perhaps that's the problem: they already know enough about locks and locksmithing to have no need for the basic information that is so severely lacking in this volume.
As an example, the chapter on automobile locks doesn't offer even a single picture or schematic view of how the rods and linkages of an automobile door lock might be configured behind all that outer metal and inner upholstery. There are two closeup views of specific mechanical devices that might (or might not) be part of a typical door lock, but we have no idea where or how they might (or might not) fit into the overall mechanism. And unless you already know what a "bellcrank" is and how it's used, the picture is meaningless. Moreover the supposedly helpful "exploded" view of a car door lists more than 20 specifically numbered door components and then places those reference numbers in the view for only a half dozen easily reconizable items such as the "armrest." Wow! That's enlightening.
At one point the text mentions that you might be able to open a locked car door by "removing the rear view mirror." and there is zero elaboration.
This sort of shallow and superficial coverage of important topics permeates the text. It might ring with clever insight to an experienced locksmith who has encountered the situation alluded to, but it's meaningless to the layman. Likewise, many of the illustrations are of no value to anyone unititiated to the obscure craft of locksmithing.
If your interested in a Britannica treatise on the history of Phoenecian tomb locks. This the book for you. If you just want some introductory hints and skill you can use around the house, forget it.

5 out of 5 stars Fifth edition continues a tradition of excellence.......2001-12-05

I have all five editions of this book, which dates back at least to 1976 when Tab books was printing them and Carl Roper was the author. I use them as reference materials fairly often when working on locks I'm unfamiliar with. As the years went by, this book was modernized and updated, and some of the older stuff has been cleaned out.

This is the most complete and professional book of locksmithing on the general market, and is an excellent value for people who work on locks. Compared to the restricted market books, Bill Phillips has outdone most of them in presentation and execution of materials. There are no spelling errors or grammatical mistakes, the information is accurate, and it covers an exhaustive number of subjects in the field of locksmithing. If you have an interest in learning a great deal about how different locks are put together, what their applications are, and how to install and service them, you should definitely get this book. If you are studying for a certification test, it is probably the best single purchase you can make for the money. Many individual subjects are not covered in as much depth as is necessary for real satisfaction, but since this book is an overview of the entire field, that is fine. There is plenty of information on rekeying various brands of locks, as well as overviews of installation and adjustment procedures. Although some people complain about this being merely a rehash of manufacturers instructions, it is incredibly convenient to have a reference like this around. If you are servicing an old lock that has been on a door for years, such a set of instructions is a handy thing.

I like what Bill Phillips has done with the book. It is more polished and more practical than the older versions, and it is great to see it stay current with technology. My own book in comparison is quite small, although it covers practical lock opening procedures more thoroughly than "The Complete Book of Locks and Locksmithing" does. People who just want to know how to open locks will find Mr. Phillips book very boring. People who install and service them will find it quite valuable, and will be grateful that it is such a well-crafted book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-01-10

I am new to the study of locksmithing. I have worked a lot with locks and have always wanted to learn more. I read this book from cover to cover and found it very informative. I felt it went into detail a little too much with specific models of locks and key cutters, but could be helpful. All in all though, I did learn a lot and would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get started in locksmithing.

5 out of 5 stars A Pretty Decent Book.......2000-08-24

I found "Locksmithing" to be a very good book for beginners and for pros. It gives information that I haven't found in other lock books. It's easy to understand. A lot of decent illustrations. I like it. I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Rehash of instruction sheets from various manufacturers........2000-08-21

Although it had its merits, this book was primarily a rehash of instruction manuals from various lock manufacturers. Upon receiving this title I was sorely disappointed. I would recommend a beginning locksmith or lock enthusiast look to another title first.

40% of this book is simply copies of manufacturers manuals and locksmith supply houses available free online.(google "kwikset master key manual" and you'll have chapter 6 or go to Adams Rite Mfg. and order for free chapter 10 "electric strike handbook" etc.)
The rest is just a quick overview of the locksmith trade, nothing in depth and definitely not Master Locksmithing. I am returning mine tomorrow.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Old tech, but worth thinking about.......2003-02-04

Much of the content (only 24 pages!) is pretty dated with regard to the type of locks being bypassed, but the concepts are the same today. You can install the best lock in the world, but it has to be part of an overall installation that won't allow easy workarounds. It made me look at my home and cars with a fresh point of view and awareness of the ways to bypass the existing locks.

While other security books mention the need to be aware of bypass techniques, this book demonstrates many specific techniques and how they are used. Worth a few bucks as part of an overall security awareness.

      1 out of 5 stars Too Amatuerish.......2000-04-26

I thought the book too amatuerish, even childish. It was written from the aspect of someone who knows just enough about locks to be dangerous. Some of the techniques just plain won't work or will damage something, though the author stresses caution to prevent such occurrences. If he really wants the reader to be cautious he should tell him to not try his methods.

This is one of the very few manuals written by a recognized professional smith; in this case, one with over 50 years' experience, whose work appears in hundreds of restorations throughout the country. The book has long been unavailable and a collector's item; this eagerly awaited reprint completely reproduces the original edition. Here traditional smithing techniques are presented in clear, step-by-step text and photographs, enabling the reader to produce high-quality, hand-forged small iron work. Included are detailed descriptions of work space layout, specialized tools and techniques, whitesmithing, toolmaking, and locksmithing. Mr. Streeter demonstrates not only how things are done, but how they can best be done by others. There is special emphasis on the crafting of early high-quality, handforged kitchen utensils, fireplace tools, locks, keys, and decorative ironware: hinges, hasps, latches, bolts, hooks, springs, and more. Students and professional and semi-professional smiths will find this volume of great practical value, as will collectors of early American ironwork, owners of colonial houses, historians, preservationists and restorationists in fact, anyone interested in knowing how these early products were made. 144 pages. 257 illustrations. 81/2" x 11". Soft cover.

I found it very informative about blacksmithing, because I'm a blacksmith for Milwaukee County of The Iron Workers DPW, and I thought it was very helpful.

2 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Apprentices.......2005-11-21

I recommend this book to any apprentice or student locksmith. But the title is misleading: "Locksmithing from Apprentice to Master." There's nothing in it for a master locksmith.

      1 out of 5 stars A Disappointed Reader.......2000-07-28

I'm co-owner of a locksmith shop, and am always on the lookout for good books for reference and to train new people. Usually TAB locksmith books are pretty decent, but "from Apprentice to Master" is weak. It doesn't have much to say its 300 plus pages. I don't see it as too technical at all.

The safe and vault work part is about three paragraphs long. The section on "General locksmith law" is in the right place, in chapter 7, because if you tried to follow the advice you'd be filing for chapter 7 (or chapter 13 bankruptcy). It says you should "draft every order, receipt, and agreement yourself." I'm not sure if that means not to trust your employees to do any writing, or if means to create all your own forms from scratch.

He also says to buy the fire codes from the National Fire Protection Association. Only a really large shop that does a lot of commercial or industrial work would want to spend that kind of money to buy those codes and keep them up to date with supplements. Most shops get along fine without them, because what they say about door hardware isn't all that complicated.

Maybe instead of urging people to buy more books, Rathjen should have put in a good chapter on fire codes. The title definitely should be changed, maybe to something like "A little about locksmithing".

This book is great for beginner locksmiths already associated with locksmithing terms and theory.. if you know nothing about locksmithing, hold off on this book til later. This book covers all the basic duties a locksmith can preform and in basic detail the how to`s of locksmithing

3 out of 5 stars Not easy to follow the instruction........1999-10-06

.... Though the author has put in a great amount of
effort in the illustration aspect, somehow the jargon and tech talk
just lost me. Definitely not for the beginner.

      3 out of 5 stars Not For a Beginner.......1999-01-11

The title "Locksmithing From Apprentice to Master" implies that it is for a novice to someone more advanced. I find unexplained terminology that makes the book hard to follow.
