Customer Reviews:
The best companion for an artist.......2006-07-28
As a fine arts professional and art teacher, I've bought hundreds of drawing and painting books extracting the best.
In Tim Deibler's "Capturing the seasons in Oils"I have extracted almost all the parts of the book soo useful they are!
The book have treasures of basic and indispensable topics as in Chapter 1 "The four key elements of painting" - explaining Shape, Value, Color and Edge ( The edge part its wonderfully detailed).
In "Painting methods" Tim not only describes the techniques but shows the thing with terrific illustrations!
In "plein air painting" You have a fine selection of equipment and delightful titles as "I'm outside, Now what?"
On the last part of the book you have precious step by step demonstrations with detailed materials as paints, brushes and other supplies in little tips boxes.
A clear up to the beginners and the advanced!
If you buy this book I'm sure that by itself it will be your best companion and instructor for long long time !
EXCELLENT!.......2006-02-18
I have greatly enjoyed all the works by this artist. His instructional video of this title is right up there at the top of all art videos. I've never seen an artist paint so fast and loose, and tie it all together into such inspiring pieces. His mastery of color and how he does his mixing is exciting and quite unique. Never seen anything like it.
Worth every penny!!
Sloppy.......2006-01-29
Too Loose and sloppy
Tim's DVD by the same title is especially bad. The production is good but Tim's technique is quite sloppy even for quick studies.
Better choices would be "14 Formulas for Painting Fabulous Landscapes" by Barbara Nuss and "Painting Better Landscapes" by Margaret Kessler other notable publications by Gregg Kreutz, David Leffel and Richard Schmid would be a wise investment.
Beautiful and colorful.......2005-10-05
I was very inspired by the vibrant paintings in this book. This book has a compilation of a large number landscape paintings created by the author. The artist has demonstrated the steps required to create different effects and seasons using various techniques. Some more detail into these techniques would be excellent. For example, how to create the look of branches of trees against the bright sunlight.
A solid painter.......2005-02-16
OK so a lot of books by this publisher are kind of lightweight but this is a nice exception. Tim Deibler has a lot of painting and color knowledge and shares it in this book.
His palette is spare but he gets miles out of it. He really knows how to mix color and he brings a freshness to each work. He's not one of those painters that keeps repeating the same color formula.
This is a well done book with exceptional color reproductions.

Customer Reviews:
A genuinely helpful book for the beginning plein air painter.......2005-09-30
I am a beginning plein air painter. As a working adult, I don't have time to take a university extension course ot enroll in local art classes. For the time being, I have to make do with instruction from books, and inspiration from published collections, galleries, art shows and museums. I purchased and read a large number of books - in and out of print - on drawing and painting. There is a great deal of fine material out there, but at the very beginning stage I find Frank Serrano's little book to be the most helpful.
Winston Churchill came to recreational painting as an adult, and in his characteristic fashion described, in another very inspiring little book ("Painting as a Pastime," Odhams, London (1965), the essential challenge (facing the blank canvas, brush in hand), and the essential quality the beginner must find within him- or herself: the audacity to put the first daub of paint on the canvas:
"Having bought the colours, an easel, and a canvas, the next step was to begin. But what a step to take! The palette gleamed with beads of colour; fair and white rose the canvas; the empty brush hung poised, heavy with destiny, irresolute in the air. My hand seemed arrested by a silent veto."
There are numerous "how to get started" books in print that deal with oil painting. What makes Serrano's so valuable is it's simple, direct approach to putting the paint on your brush and then on the canvas. It is a quality of this book, and not a failing, that it does not attempt to cover too much material. Serrano sticks to the basics, and describes them with admirable simplicity and directness. His approach is not so simple as to be condescending, though. As a beginning painter, I feel some of the lack of control that I felt when learning to drive. At first there seem to be so many things to think about: mixing the colors to replicate what you see, considering the overall compositional plan of the canvas, keeping in mind the shadows and the highlights. Just one example of a beginner's challenge is to shade the green of the leaves on a tree so that the sunlit leaves are bright and the leaves in shadow are dark, while maintaining the proper character of the green between lit and shadowed areas. The essential value of Serrano's book is that it focuses on the essentials. Any more detail, and the beginner could go into "information overload."
Getting the level of detail is very important in a book aimed at beginners in any discipline. If the student is so burdened with "do's and don'ts" and details that they become confused, or worse, discouraged, the teacher has failed. Yet, there seems to be a tendency for teachers/writers to want to "strut their stuff," to show how well they have mastered the details of the craft. They forget that beginning is not about details, its about fundamentals, and getting those fundamentals right. That's the foundation the beginner needs to progress. Frank Serrano has not forgotten what it's like to be a beginner. Reading his book, I got the impression that Serrano, accomplished as he has become, has not lost the excitement, the sheer joy, of learning. The basics seem as important to him as the more sophisticated elements of the craft. Indeed, looking at his works in the book, on various websites on the Internet, and in person (I own several of his original paintings), a simplicity and clarity of vision becomes apparent. His paintings seem to be as much about the essentials, the basics, of envisioning and experiencing nature as his book is about the essentials of the craft. I've had the pleasure of speaking with Frank on occasion, and I can honestly say the joy and excitement I sense in his paintings are communicated by him on a personal level.
Another aspect of Serrano's book that I believe is important, is that it is informed by his respect for the traditions of the plein air genre. As noted in his book, Frank was influenced by Sam Hyde Harris, who was at the center of plein air activity in Southern California in the mid 20th century. Harris was part of the art community that settled and painted at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains and along the California coast. Harris explored the effects of atmosphere - early morning haze, for example - in his paintings of Pasadena's Arroyo Seco and Los Angeles's Chavez Ravine (long before Dodger Stadium). These and other sites in California and the Western US are the locales in which Frank finds his own subjects.
If you are interested in starting plein air painting, and want a good guide to the essentials without extraneous detail, I don't think you can do better than to buy Frank Serrano's "Plein Air Painting in Oil." You will be learning from a fine artist in the plein air tradition, who has not lost the enthusiasm for learning and the sense of sheer fun that is - or should be - so important to anyone starting out to learn a new craft.
A workshop for the price of lunch!!.......2005-08-25
This is by far the best plein air painting book for the money that I've ever purchased! It's packed full of easy-to-understand lessons on every page. Excellent for either the beginner or intermediate-level oil painters out there. Advanced painters probably already know most of this stuff, so should probably turn to Richard Schmid's "Alla Prima." I think the only other plein air painting book that's as good as this one is Kevin MacPherson's.
The author presents step-by-step lessons throughout the book, and de-mystifies a lot of concepts and techniques. I think many people will learn more from this book than from a typical plein air workshop as the writing and photos are well-done, and because Frank has put a lot of effort into clear and concise writing.
My only complaint is that I wish it was much longer!
Do not miss this gem in the making. Get it now........2005-06-06
This little gem is one of the FINEST how-to books about oil painting that you will ever read, or come across in your life-time. I strongly suggest that you get this book before it goes out of print-and enjoy it forever.
For a mere price of a fish-and-chips order, you just cannot go wrong. But, the problem with that fish-and-chips order is that once eaten, everything is gone forever. You will have this book for as long as you live to enjoy, and possibly to share, if you were to buy a copy. You simply cannot go wrong there. Can you?
The hidden beauty of this amazing little book is that it is only 64 fantastic pages that you could read again, and again without getting bored. Every single line of the text is full of secrets.
Serrano uses only eight oil paints, and three brushes in order to create those depths, and textures in each painting in the book.
When he describes each painting in the book, it is like you are painting that painting by yourself alone, and Serrano is behind you holding your hand with your brush. For example, how to do trees simply, and rapidly without fiddling endlessly with details; or, skies; or the time of the day; or foggy/misty scenes; or whatever you fancy...
I wish I had this incredible book back during my university days...
There are 12 painting lessons from easy to complex topics; and a wonderful gallery at the end.
Here are the lessons: painting step by step; creating dynamic compositions; simplifying a subject; capturing light & shadow; expressing mood; building texture; finding a good focus; conveying time of day; depicting distance; deciding what to paint; using negative space, and exercising artistic licence.
Here are the chapters: introduction; a word from the author; tools & materials; colour in Plein air painting; painting techniques; painting skies & clouds; painting trees/water/rocks/figures; gallery, and conclusion.
This book has taken my breath away. It may take yours, too!
You have nothing to lose, but an order of those stupid fatting fish-and-chips. Get this book, now; before it is too late-if you know what I mean.
Frank Serrano is a disguised masterpiece painter.

Customer Reviews:
Only an average plein air book.......2006-06-16
I'd rate this as your average plein air book for two reasons: because it spends too much of the book on preparing for plein air painting and because it should've been written as separate books for the different mediums.
I admit that I want a good plein air book on oils without all the introductory material that's repeated in every book you buy. If you need something more basic or work equally in both mediums then the other reviews are more appropriate. For a little more detail on the contents of the book, read on.
The book is divided into six chapters: 1) Gathering your Gear (24 pages), 2) Making the Most of Your Colors (10 pages), 3) Plein Air Painting (12 pages), 4) Plein Air Painting in Watercolor (26 pages), 5) Plein Air Painting in Oil (30 pages), 6) Using Plein Air Work in the Studio (18 pages)
I count 29 illustrations of finished oil paintings, plus 3 multi-step (8 to 9) ilustrated demonstrations of plein air paintings in oil. These are of Saint Mary River in Glacier National Park, a snow covered stream surrounded by willows, and Grosvenor Arch in the Utah desert.
I count 32 illustrations of finished watercolor paintings, plus 3 multi-step (7-10) illustrated demonstrations of plein air paintings in watercolor. These are of the California Coast, a covered bridge on a river valley, and a white house in bright late morning light.
There's a lot of talk of colors used in the demonstrations plus additional worthy discussion with other paintings. Note that the cover paintings are not among the demonstrations. Aside from the pencil sketches all illustrations in the book are color.
I'd like to see Frank cut the preparatory material to 1/3 its size and turn this into two books - doubling the illustrations, demonstrations and discussion of each medium.
A practical guideline overall in plein-air painting........2001-12-03
This book could have earned a 4.5 stars in my rating system. Overall, it is a practical guideline for beginning/intermediate painters who may have just started to paint out-of-doors. My review targets these groups of readers and their presumed interests in purchasing/reading this book.
Pros:
1) The book has VERY PRACTICAL sections on material, tools, gears, etc... to get you "out of the house" to go painting. The information is available for both watercolorists and "oilists" ("oil-ists", OK, so I made up this word!) I myself find these sections particularly clear and helpful, especially for those who have already invested quite a bit in the facility to paint in-doors, as spending more money in extra tools for painting out-of-doors might become a burden. The accurate information provided in the book is certainly a big help to readers.
2) The book is well-organized and easy to read. The author covers discussion on colors, composition, then moves on to demonstrating painting plein-air in watercolors and oils. Each demo is shown step-by-step with somewhat in-depth discussion on color choices and art maneuver in each step.
3) The book also covers other issues, such as the use of multiple photos to create a painting, conversion of oil to water colors and vice versa, the recreation of paintings in the studio based on small paintings done on location, painting from memory, etc.
4) As I mentioned above, the STRONGEST point of the book, in my opinion, is that it covers the very practical aspects of this genre, in order to prepare the readers to "get out and paint" and perhaps achieve certain progresses as starters. I also appreciate the efforts of the author in sharing with the readers some of his valuable tips in painting out-of-doors. For instance, to avoid distraction when painting during the winter, one thing to do is to keep your feet warm. The author provides some very simple and useful solution (no, it is not just wearing warm boots), which must have come from his years of painting out-of-doors. "What solution", you ask? Well, it is for me to know (since I read it), and for you to find out! (It is all in there.)
Cons:
These are not really "cons", but rather my opinions of things that may have made this book a "better" one (perhaps).
1) I myself find the demos are a bit wordy in explaining color choices in each step. I did find myself skipping pages when reading the book due to boredom. However, considering the fact that this is NOT the first art book I read, nor am I brand-new to oil painting, it could be a very personal thing. On the other hand, other intermediate/advanced oil painters may feel the same way I did.
2) I do not agree with other comments putting down other authors of plein-air painting in praising this book. Although I agree the author of this book has succeeded in making this book simple and easy to read, I do find some other titles did a rather good job in explaining concepts, principles, theories, and techniques in painting out-of-doors. As a matter of fact, I find in them (other books) certain depths which may be very valuable to advanced plein-air painters. To back my opinion, the author of this book himself recommends "you" (the readers) to resort to those books as well (in the cited references).
Splendid Guide.......2001-03-26
Frank LaLumia has succeeded where many authors fail - providing excellent instruction in a concise manner. His own works are inspiring and his command of the various media is impressive, but his greatest strength is that he explains in a page or two concepts that other books mumble on about for entire chapters. I was delighted and inspired by this artist's stunning first book. Keep on writing, Mr. LaLumia!

With new appreciation for New Orleans..........2007-07-08
Thanks to Phil Sandusky, we have a pre-Katrina record of New Orleans seen through the appreciative eye of an artist. The design and execution of his plein air work fits perfectly the appealing clutter and humidity-laden atmosphere of the aging city. His choice of subject matter represents everything from uptown's residences to mid-town breweries and includes the above-the-watertable tombs, Jackson Square monuments, lakefront marinas, riverfront industry, city park views, and more.
Besides this rich array of images, the text is worthwhile reading for its account of life in the city and his discussions of painting technique. From one artist (originally from Louisiana) to another, thanks, Phil!
A wonderful collection.......2007-01-21
Phil Sandusky, in the tradition of Claude Monet and other French Impressionists of the late 19th century, insists on painting outdoors, on location, in order to capture the visual experience of the imagery and light of the "fleeting moment" in the life of his subject. The subject in this case is pre-Katrina New Orleans, and this book is a wonderful collection of 150 of Sandusky's works from 1987 to 2002.
I was born in New Orleans, and lived there for twenty-one years, and so I am familiar with many,if not most, of the locations he has captured on canvas. He has done a marvelous job of recording not only what specific sites look like: buildings in the French Quarter, homes in the Garden District, above-ground tombs in the cemeteries, Audobon Park lagoon, scenes of City Park, and much much more . He has I think captured the spirit or feel of the city as I remember it. I can highly recommend this book to anyone who has an attachment to New Orleans, and to anyone with an interest in Impressionist painting. I understand that Sandusky will be coming out with a collection of post-Katrina paintings, and I for one am looking forward to that.

Book Description
The color plates in "Painting Point Reyes" are of landscapes of the Point Reyes area. The three essays are written by well known writer and journalist Judy Coburn, John Clarke art historian, and artist Susan Hall. Coburn's essay is about the cultural history of Point Reyes, Clarke discusses the art historical aspects of Hall's work and Susan Hall writes about her relationship to the landscape paintings in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Intelligent and Transcendent.......2003-09-26
As "aum" captures the sound of the universe, as Georgia O'Keefe captures the vibration of a flower, Susan Hall's landscape paintings capture the very "prana" of the land in West Marin County in Northern California. The paintings of rolling green and golden hills, a watery marsh, a farmhouse nestled in the fold of a hill transport the viewer to what is transcendent in the landscape. Susan expresses a deeper essence of the land and water than could ever be subject to words. Her renditions of light, reflection, atmosphere and water are positively multisensory - I feel the density of the air, the moisture that lingers above the pond, I smell the dry sharpness of the grasses. Best of all, she leaves space for the viewer's feelings and projections while nonetheless managing to quietly and subtly uplift and inspire. Look for the joy in the brushstroke, the subtle whimsy in the color, the power in her earth.
The introductory sections are worth reading, locating Hall's body of work in the history of landscape painting (which I suspect will be significant!), in the local geography and geology, in her own personal history/memories there, and.as a commentary on human use of the land and water in the Point Reyes area. From these, the reader gets the sense of the largesse and intelligence and relevance of Hall's landscapes, yet it should be noted that the majority of paintings, modestly titled "Rocks and Sea," "The Beach," "Full Moon," are already in people's collections. A great American painter who obviously speaks to the souls of her audience.
I return to this compilation over and over, to rest, recalibrate and inspire my psyche. In addition to people who appreciate fine art, it is also appropriate for people in psychology, deep ecology, nature enthusiasts, those who live and work in the outdoors, and those in the meditative arts. I gave it to a writer to evoke his cherished spaces in Northern California.
Meditations on Eden.......2003-09-19
Susan Hall's paintings of Point Reyes, part of the Point Reyes National Seashore, are sublime meditations on a very special landscape. And although the book is a tribute to this idyllic area, her paintings go beyond any physical setting. As I looked through the book I realized that I was turning the pages more slowly at each color plate. The simplicity of the format, the beauty and richness of the colors (which is too often the disappointment in reproductions) and the images themselves captured me and I was reluctant to go quickly. This is a successful representation of both the spirit and the amazing skill of Ms. Hall's work. I highly recommend it.
The Rural is Lyrical.......2003-09-19
Susan Hall's Painting Point Reyes offers a lyrical gallery of rural landscapes wrought with the refined sensibility of an artist who cherishes her birthplace. Ms. Hall's selection of the spacious natural environment for her subject matter - California's stunning Point Reyes National Seashore - is as important as what she leaves out: all the peripheral contemporary distractions of billboards, crowds and cars. By haunting us with the universal through richly layered minimalist compositions often depicted under the diffuse light of night, she offers a spare and precious moment of touching the lagoons and pools, the hillsides and meadows she calls home.
Spritual guidebook for Pt Reyes and an artist............2003-09-17
The paintings are haunting and immediately transported me into a place from where I was able to see Pt Reyes spritually rather than literally. Susan's perspective of Pt. Reyes is unusual and soothing. Whether you know Pt Reyes or not, this is an opportunity to get intimate with one of America's greatest artists and look through her eyes at how she describes her place of childhood. Some of the paintings in this book are from private collections, so it was a treat for me to have in my living room, earlier work by Susan Hall, which is otherwise impossible to see, let alone own.
A Treasure.......2003-09-16
Painting Point Reyes is a real treasure. The collection of beautiful prints of Susan Hall's paintings provide an unparalleled look into the landscapes of Point Reyes through the paint brush of a native and outstanding artist. Her rich paintings are filled with emotion and capture a perspective of Point Reyes that one cannot see with the naked eye. This book resides on my coffee table and is hardly ever closed, people are drawn to it, and thus it is a perfect gift, both for those who know and love Point Reyes as well as those who simply enjoy fabulous art.
Customer Reviews:
A must-have for any landscape painter.......2004-02-16
I am a Virginia landscape painter and have kept this book close at hand in my studio for many years. While I do not paint like Richard, I nonetheless pull this book out out several times a month, for inspiration or information or just to look at how he has handled various problems of light and color. As noted in another review, this is not a step-by-step book, but rather a beautiful record of the process of one dedicated painter that will inspire and encourage.
A serious book for serious painters........2003-07-11
This book really isn't for "Sunday painters" or beginners. There's very little on technique and not a single trick for churning out cute landscapes. What it offers is image after image of suberbly crafted landscapes, images worth studying again and again. His handling of values, and the subtle variations of hue, temperature, and intensity within each value shape, are absolutely masterful. Clearly, he practices what he preaches: landscapes which blend artistic invention with an acute observation of what exists in the landscape. There's not a lot of text in this book, but like his landscapes, what he writes is succinct, intelligent, and well worth taking to heart. As I become a better painter, this book offers more valuable instruction, not less.
