A great begginers book for those who dont have anyone to teach them. Easy to understand and follow instructions, also heaps of handy hints

5 out of 5 stars The Best Quilt Book.......2007-06-08

I originally bought this book for a quilt club I had joined. The "main" person, who is a seasoned quilter, said it is her all time favorite book. I must agree. I currently have numerous "beginner or easy" quilt book, but this is the one I keep going back to. A must have, in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic, book.......2007-03-18

This book is a good, but very simplistic book. It was a good start for me, but once I got the basics down, it wasn't as helpful.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2006-12-31

I was a clueless teenager when I bought this book and I had never sewed a stitch prior to reading this. All I had was a desire to make quilts. I succesfully made a nice quilt my first time by using this book. I've been making quilts ever since. I have other quilting books, but I have an emotional attachment to this one as this is the one I learned on. I still look at it to this day if I want to make a quickie, but I don't use it that often any more as this just covers the basics and once you have those down you wouldn't need this book. If a teen who has never sewed anything before can successfully make a quilt using this book than anybody can.

5 out of 5 stars Can't say enough great things!!.......2006-08-31

Search no more! I am in the process of taking a quilting class and this is the required reading. I could actually learn to quilt straight from the book, no instructor necessary (and I am a complete novice). It's so simply written and so thorough.

The instructions of this book are so good that I made the quarter log cabin quilt in just a few days. The illustrations are very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and Easy Quilting a la Eleanor Burns.......2007-07-17

As usual, Eleanor Burns has taken complex piecework and made it something that even a beginning quilter can do. I have used some of Ms. Burns' techniques in other quilt designs, and I am always pleased with the results. In particular, applique was always my least favorite "chore" in the past, and I avoided it like a migraine. Now, with Eleanor's method using fusible interfacing, it's a snap! Another great success for Eleanor Burns and Quilt in a Day!

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait.......2007-07-08

It is one of the best of Quitl in a day books. She has the best instructions of all the quilters.

5 out of 5 stars Best yet from the best quilting instructor!.......2007-06-13

This is going to be one of my favorites from our friendly laid-back quilting instructor. If you've been longing for something a bit more meaty and advanced from Eleanor, this is the book for you. She will show you how to make things look more advanced than they really are by implementing her clever techniques.

Although I have always learned something new from her prior books (in her elegantly simple manner), I found the older patterns to be too elemental and chunky. There were not enough color changes or pattern varieties, and the blocks always seemed too large and too few; everything had that "very first quilt" look to it. Hence I shied away from her most recent publications and even sold or gave away a few of the old ones.

THIS book, however, is a very pleasant surprise. There are 13 designs, presented in order of the four seasons. You will find blocks based on crazy hearts, "log cabin" pine trees with appliqued cardinals, stars intermingled with 4-patch blocks, fish, flower baskets, and a Twin Sisters block based on a pattern from 1845. I'll save the rest so you can be (pleasantly) surprised!!

In typical fashion, Eleanor uses a range of simple-to-clever techniques: foundations, embellishments, folded borders, curved seams, fusible applique, equilateral finished triangles, and fussy cutting. She also includes her clever method for Flying Geese/Star Points which guarantees a perfect piece, and her fusible applique technique replaces the usual paper-piecing to create a fabulous Lady Liberty circular crown block.

As I mentioned earlier, Eleanor breaks away from her usual huge/chunky block size; most of the blocks are under 9 inches with one as small as 5 inches. She just had to include a block that measures 17 by 22 inches (in a cute fish pattern), but I'll allow her that!

As in her prior books, most projects feature her own fabric lines, but there is a wee bit less emphasis on floral here. And some projects are shown done up in batiks and tone-on-tones, demonstrating how you can personally tailor her simple patterns to your own fabric preferences. Directions are provided for a variety of quilt-top sizes, plus table runners and pillow cases.

Just a few less than positive things to note: The very first design is for a crazy Valentine, and she instructs you to use foundation piecing!! To me, it seems somewhat oxymoronic to call this "crazy" when the exact same foundation is used for every block. When I make this one, I will skip the paper-piecing and do it up in true "crazy quilt" fashion. Also, the publication is in a spiral ring binder; great idea but bad execution for clutzes like me. Once you have spiraled the front or back cover it never seems to go back into place correctly without you having to re-leaf all the pages. Small thing, but a possible minor pain for folks with MS or arthritis. And you will probably find yourself buying yet another rotary ruler (don't we have enough??!!) to take the best advantage of her technique. Finally, I would love to have seen the publisher put a photo of each project on the table of contents page. I've seen this done before and it really saves you from constantly flipping through the pages to find that one design you thought you saw but can't remember where. This would have been especially helpful given that there are 13 different projects here.

Now, so that I can leave on a positive note, let me end by saying there truely is something here for every one, regardless of you preference for fabrics, pattern styles, or block sizes. If you want to add a publication that is sure to become a classic, this is the one to buy!

I was extremely disappointed with this publication! I own multiple copies of Eleanor Burn's DVDs and matching books. I am probably one of her biggest fans. This book requires that you purchase a book from QuiltSmart which costs another $20 and a plastic template to get the specific measures to cut the fabric pieces, etc. For the price of the book, I felt that at least all of the instructions should have been within the book I was purchasing or the book should have been a lot less expensive brand new.

The book text is well written - I can almost hear her teaching me. Very informative and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars MASTER PRECISION PIECING.......2007-05-12

If you want to understand how to do precise piecing, this is your sourcebook. It is a must have book for anyone who wants to take their quilting to the expert level. Sally Collins is a multiple award winning quilter who's quilts have inspired me to work harder on my miniatures. Sally makes her complex miniature quilts without the aid of foundation piecing. This books has 7 projects from a small quilt to a large wallhanging. The projects use intermediate to advanced skills, and two include applique. There are tip for pinning, cutting, pressing, sewing to get perfect results. This book will not disappoint you!

3 out of 5 stars tiny, tiny, tiny..........2007-05-09

This book had many good hints for precision piecing. I also liked the section on color. However, the quilts in this book are miniscule--4"X4", 14 1/2 X 17 1/2...I'm not at a level to complete such intricate and small pieced projects. I feel the description might have said something about the size of the quilting projects. They are beautiful and did give me some ideas, but I would have appreciated some projects that were easier to complete. If I were able to complete these projects, I probably wouldn't be looking for a book on mastering precision piecing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for all skill levels!.......2007-05-02

I purchased the companion DVD and agree with all the reviewer's comments here. The DVD was very professionally done and a pleasure to listen to. I wish I had seen this when I first began quilting and am happy to have this DVD for reference to take on more challenging quilts with confidence. For new quilters, I highly recommend this book along with Guide to Machine Quilting by Diane Gaudynski and Ricky Tims Presents Grand Finale: Fine Machine Quilting and Finishing Techniques DVD to teach yourself everything you need to know to make a beautiful heirloom quilt.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed and Forthright.......2007-03-24

I find Sally Collins' quilts stunning and she clearly is a perfectionist. The methods in this book have helped me improve my piecing. We see many books on how to make quilts fast. Ms. Collins encourages quilters to make quilts well. She is a master crafter in this field and the book is excellent in my opinion.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Slaves & Slavery Review.......2007-08-02

A fascinating insight into a bygone era with the reliable details and research we have come to expect from B.Brackman. It is also a revelation of man's inhumanity towards man and the arrogance of white people towards anyone different. As a student of history I could have done without the quilt patterns though. When will publishers realise there is a market for historic facts without the frills? If I want quilt patterns I will buy a book devoted entirely to them, when I want history I would like to have it without the added patterns.

3 out of 5 stars Facts Without the Fabrications.......2007-06-20

A fascinating book by Barbara Brackman on the history of slavery & quilts. She goes into depth on how slavery originated, emancipation & integration of slaves, or lack thereof. She didn't quite hit the mark disproving the link between escaping slaves & the role of the underground railroad quilt in sending directional messages, which was an area she briefly glossed over leaving the reader dissatisfied & still questioning the outcome.

The quilts portrayed were attractive but not as outstanding as the projects in her many other wonderful books.

As a book on the history of slavery, this text is excellent. In disproving fabrications between underground railroad quilts & escaping slaves, I feel it falls short. A worthwhile read, however.

5 out of 5 stars quilts during slavery.......2007-05-18

Great history of quilts during the Civil War and slavery. Very informative and interesting reading. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Super book on African-American quilt history.......2007-04-11

This is a beautiful book of history on African-American quilt making and is chock full of photos, patterns, and basic American history as well. She pulls no punches, tells no lies or tales, and tells you what is an absolute FACT and what is questionable. If you are interested at all in the subject, you must have this book. It is way beyond the info in E.Burns Underground Railroad book. (Which is also a nice resource.)

5 out of 5 stars Quilts and Slave History.......2007-04-11

Although I haven't finished this book I am very impressed with what I've read so far. This book would interest anyone who wants to know more about the early history of quilting without regard to the "color" of the quilter. The pictures show families during this time and their living conditions. I would recommend highly. I am eager to make some of the quilt squares offered here.

Convergence quilts feature two or more fabrics cut into strips, sewn together, then cut and pieced again. They may look complex but are fun and easy to make. Four projects walk you through the process, and Tims shows how to add appliqué, beadwork, and other decorative touches to achieve an infinite number of looks from one ingenious technique!

One look inside and I just couldn't wait to make won of these. Easier than they look. They can be so very pretty.

5 out of 5 stars An easy technique that makes everyone say WOW!.......2007-08-25

Some quilting books show gorgeous quilts that you know you'll never make. The techniques are complex and time consuming, or the writing fails to give you confidence that you understand the steps involved. Perhaps it'd make sense if someone showed you just once... but the instructions are confusing.

Ricky Tims avoids these pitfalls, with a book that is *incredibly* well written -- and yields brilliant results.

Just how easy is this? I made my first convergence quilt top in two or three hours, while I was also watching a baseball game, using 4 fat quarters that I already had on hand. And I'm no quilting wiz.

Since then, I've made two additional convergence quilts, and I'm sure to make several more (the holidays are coming, after all). As a quilting instructor pointed out, these are like potato chips, in that you can't stop at one. I've loved every quilt I've made, and so has everyone who has seen these quilts.

Do note that the basic quilt is very small -- perfect for a wall quilt but not much more. I think you could create several of these as blocks to turn into a bed quilt, but you'd be on your own to do so. The quilt is so easy to make and I like the results so much that I am tempted to give it a try.

This would be a great book for someone who is fairly new to quilting. I wouldn't suggest it as your very first book (you should do at least a few small traditional projects first), but the forgiving nature of the techique is sure to give you a quilt to be proud of. It's all straight lines, and despite the appearance of the quilt it has no complex piecing. What fun! Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Convergence Quilting.......2007-06-07

This book is a fantastic starting point to creating your own convergence quilt. The step-by-step instructions are very clear and the examples so varied and intriguing that you are inspired to step outside your comfort zone and create something totally unique and different. If you're ready to try a new and exciting technique, this book is for you!

5 out of 5 stars Simple but spectacular.......2007-04-05

What a fun concept this technique is for both beginning and experienced quilters. It is basic strip piecing and takes advantage of some of the fabulous batiks and hand-dyed fabrics available today. Most of my quilting friends who've used this book took their basic Convergence pieced quilt top and embellished/appliqued them to the nth degree. It is a contemporary look to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is FUN!!.......2007-03-06

Once again I will sing the praises of Ricky Tims and his "think outside of the box" tips & techniques. He understands we are not all degreed artists, and some us are a bit more creatively challenged than others. He, once again, shows some simple, yet at times a bit daring, techniques that will yield results to impress even the best artists. (I know because I was able to WOW a couple of pros with Masters Degrees in Graphic Art.) Anyone can do this, even children. You just need to be able to bring yourself to sew it together then cut it apart, a phobia you will quickly get over. Ricky actually shows you how to "break the rules" and live with yourself for doing so, because the results are amazing & totally unique every time! These techniques work with any fabric or color choice. (I intentionally put together 3 fabrics that normally would not work with each other- purple, orange, and green- just to see, and had fantastic results!) You can't go wrong, no matter what choices you make, and best of all, you don't waste fabric! It takes only a little to "test" your idea, and even that becomes a work of art all on its own. I HIGHLY recommend this book... It is FUN!!!!!

As a highly skilled fiber artist raised and trained in Japan but residing in the United States for the past decade and a half, Kumiko Sudo brings an interesting combination of Eastern and Western sensibilities to her work. She draws on the ancient Japanese motif of the kamon, or family crest, utilizing these varied designs as the basis for a collection of one-of-a-kind quilts. Yet she fashions them out of materials that, though they have a very Japanese flavor, are actually contemporary American fabrics (and therefore easily approximated by modern stitchers). She provides color photos, setting diagrams, brief basic instructions, and full templates for 30 gorgeous quilt blocks. Quilters seeking a vibrant new take on the traditional Western quilt block should enjoy making these lovely designs. --Amy Handy

    5 out of 5 stars Perfection!.......2006-05-18

This book is full of beautiful ideas. Most of the projects are small so the "fear of applique" is tempered by the fact that you can make one crest, frame it with beautiful fabric borders and you have a terrific piece of art without having to commit to a huge applique project. But the journey is well worth it - everything I've made with Ms. Sudo's inspirational direction has turned out perfectly. I'm anxious to get started on more!

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2003-07-17

I saw this book at a quilt store a couple months ago, and IMMEDIATELY fell in love with it. I'm not a big quilter (I also cross-stitch) but I like applique and now I'm doing a queen size one with fifteen of the patterns in this book! It's great!

5 out of 5 stars This book wakes up the artist within........1998-06-25

To say that Kumiko Sudo's Circles of the East is inspirational is an understatement. It is a beautiful book to read, even if you never make one quilt block from it's pages. The whole history of Japanese Crest designs is entertaining enough, but the fact that I could actually replicate Kumiko's art is incredible. I made the Gingko design using my machine with great results although all Kumiko's work is done by hand. Her templates are exact, but she does not include full size placement diagrams. I dreaded getting to the placement part of sewing my block, but it was way easier than I thought...The most interesting aspect of her work to me is her seemingly complete disregard of grainline and total obsession with placement of fabric motifs...it gives her blocks stunning symmetry that I haven't seen anywhere else...really exotic!

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful & inspiring quilt book I have ever seen........1998-03-20

I accidentally found this book in a quilt shop. I could hardly wait to get started. The photos are awesome, the workmanship is unparalleled and the use of fabrics is inspirational. The book is well written and the instructions are clear.

There are no instructions for Kumiko's method of binding these quilts.
