Beautifully rendered, heartbreakingly adorable, and wonderfully wacky knitted caps for newborns and toddlers
Thirty-eight million Americans knit, and that number grows every day. The baby hat is the perfect project for knitters of any level, with enchanting patterns that are easy enough for rank beginners but also interesting enough for the most accomplished needle wielders, in yarns that range from silk and linen to cashmere and mohair.
Susan Anderson’s Itty-Bitty Hats presents thirty-eight irresistible designs for infants and toddlers—fun, hip, creative patterns with decorative flourishes that are witty, whimsical, and undeniably unique. The projects are arranged by order of difficulty and accompanied by beautiful photographs, instructive how-to illustrations, and utterly clear instructions (with no confusing abbreviations or insider shorthand). Anderson also provides an indispensable introductory section on stitches, materials, equipment, terminology, and techniques, allowing even the most inexperienced knitter to get started confidently.
Made for boys and girls, by parents and grandparents, aunts and even uncles, and, of course, best friends, the handmade hat is the perfect shower or birth or birthday gift—and Itty-Bitty Hats is the perfect gift for any knitter.

So Fun!.......2007-09-25
I think this is a GREAT book! I have NEVER knit before, but I am 9 months pregnant and bored...so I picked up a new hobby. This book has wonderful instructions at the beginning for the "total newbie". I was able to knit my way to a cute hat in 2 days. I am not sure how I would feel about it if I were an "experienced knitter" but the hats are adorable no matter what!
So Cute I Bought It and Learned To Knit!.......2007-09-19
I saw this book at a local bookstore and was so captivated by the cover that I ended up buying it--and then bought needles and yarn, and learned to knit! The instructions and illustrations are easy enough for a novice, and the variations on similar themes make it easy to progress from the simpler hats to the more detailed ones. I made the "Ribbons" hat for a friend's baby shower, and it was the hit of the party. Wherever my daughter wears any of her Itty Bitty Hats (I've made her several), she turns heads. The hats are adorable, and the book is beautiful. I can't wait to buy Susan's next one!
So fun!.......2007-08-08
I got this book as a present and have knit 5 of the hats so far. I think it is fun and all the patterns are doable if you have a working knowledge of knitting.
A beginner who LOVES this book!.......2007-07-09
I bought this book having never picked up knitting needles and learned how to make these hats by the authors instruction! A 4th of the book is teaching knitting so I don't know if experienced knitters would like that, but even then, it has a lot of cute baby hat instructions! Only twice did I have to use my computer to supplement her instructions, and only b/c I needed to SEE the stitch done so I found a video online. I'm on my 2nd hat for my newborn coming this fall and find this book very user-friendly and easy to follow!
Knitted Hats for Babies.......2007-06-28
Great book with clear and complete instructions. Wisely starts with a very simple hat and leads you gradually to more complicated designs.
You can make an unique baby gift in an afternoon or two.
Highly recommend for the novice and experienced knitter.
Book Description
“Beginning knitters can complete most of the designs featured, and...the author includes information on substituting yarns. Visually, this is a beautiful book, with full-page color photos of each design and detailed close-ups. Among the many designs featured are an enchanting cashmere teddy bear, a lace-edged baby blanket, and classic baby booties. Warmly recommended for public libraries of all sizes.”—Library Journal.

Some cute projects..........2007-06-21
Some of the projects are adorable, but I've only started one so far and already found a mistake! (I've only been knitting for a few months...) hopefully things will go well and i'll have cute little projects to surround my baby with, but so far i'm looking to stick to another book, my favorite...
Very rewarding knitting experience.......2007-04-10
I'm quite delighted with this book. The patterns are quite elegant in their simplicity. Perhaps the only criticism I have is that the finished projects actually turn out a little larger than I initially imagined (such as the baby booties, but I have been using cotton and size 2 US needles). For a beginning knitter such as myself, this was a very straightforward book, and the patterns can be easily tailored and embellished to make the finished projects unique gifts.
Classy babies!.......2007-03-08
These are exactly as the title describes, cherished! Simple and quick patterns but exquisitely beautiful. Yarns called for can be pricey, so keep an eye out for bargains or find substitutes in the same gauge. Absolutely beautiful patterns any baby would be lucky to wear! Great gifts!
Classic Baby Knits Book. Great for making fast baby shower gifts........2007-02-16
I adore this book. I really like Erika Knight's designs. She has a very modern, classic style with a slight edge which makes her designs fun to knit. A lot of reviewers have said her books are full of mistakes, but I didn't find any when I made the rolled edge cap and booties as a gift. I did have to decipher a few phrases, but it shouldn't be a problem for most knitters. The simple designs are all knit in stockinette or garter stitch, and some have embroidery or lacy edging. I would love using the luxury yarns suggested in the patterns for a baby of my own, but for gifts, I use other baby yarns which substitute nicely without costing a lot. Using white silk yarn isn't very practical either unless you are making the items for special occasions.
gorgeous book with yes, SIMPLE, patterns to knit!.......2006-12-27
This book is fantastic! My Mom gave it to me for Christmas; I've made a baby hat in it and the garter stitch sweater already! The pictures are beautiful and the instructions overall are very clear.
Book Description
Debbie Bliss presents 20 adorable new designs for babies and toddlers--from blankets and booties to cardigans, twin sets, and coats--all using soft, snuggly yarns.
Customer Reviews:
not simple.......2007-10-06
Simply Baby
This was very disappointing. The first pattern I started had a mistake. I am an intermidiate knitter and should not have had any problems knitting this pattern. This is the second Debbie Bliss pattern in a row that has had a mistake. It seems as if Debbie Bliss is not concerned about customer satisfaction of quality control. I will NEVER buy a Debbie Bliss pattern book again, and am considering returning this one.
Beautiful.......2007-08-28
I've only knit the baby shrug so far, but as someone who does not have a lot of experience with knitting garments, I loved the instructions. Very clear, easy to follow. The yarns are gorgeous. Soothing to work with. I would recommend this to anyone. The book itself is nicely laid out with beautiful pictures of the knitting and the babies...
Cute but impractical.......2007-07-23
There are a lot of cute patterns in here, but many of them are impractical. When my daughter was younger than 6 months, we never put her in sweaters or cardigans. We just kept her in sleepers and bundled her in blankets.
Knitting for Baby: 30 Heirloom Projects with Complete How-to-Knit Instructions has many more practical use items like toys, diaper bags, sweaters for mom, blankets, etc.
Beautiful baby.......2007-06-08
What a lovely book - very easy to follow and very inspiring for any aspiring mother or grandmother or even great-aunt!
Blissful Knitting.......2007-05-21
I loved this book! The garments are simple, classy and timelessly classic. Any mom would be thrilled to receive one of these beautiful items. The directions are clear and concise. My only complaint is that the rows are not numbered, but written as "next row", but this is a minor complaint. I have purchased several of her books and they are all authored in the same thoughtful, well written manner.

Pretty but empty of substance.......2007-09-26
This is a great book to look at. It scream's GIFT ME! But if you look inside this book, you will find that you could do better with any number of game and craft resources. It is not useful if you have any other busy books.
Neat book!.......2007-02-03
I like this book for the simple fact that once you've tried everything you can think of to entertain your toddler, ALAS, comes this book through the mail. There's really neat activities, recipes , and crafts. It goes from infant to preschooler..so you'll get good use out of it. I would recommend this book to any mother.
a little disappointing.......2007-01-12
i really decided to buy this book because i wanted to find some activities i could do with my child that would help his development. but i was disappointed to find out that there was like 3 pages of stuff for children ages 0 to 6 months. this book was advertised as having stuff from birth to toddler, it shouldn't have misled people about what was in the book. i mean all there is for under 6 months is some rhymes and a couple of activities. i thought there was going to be some stuff about activities to help them reach their developmental milestones. i mean their are probably not many people that don't know the few rhymes and games that are in the book.
A staple if you have children.......2006-12-24
Engaging activities--simple and creative. Years of fun, playing, exploring, and learning. Easy to understand and do. We have loved it and given it as a gift to new parents, too. Wonderful!
A great resource idea book!.......2005-09-27
I get a TON of ideas from Wonderplay by Fretta Reitzes. I'm a home daycare provider and I'm always looking for ideas to do with my daycare kids. I don't know what I would do with out this book. It'a MUST have for home daycare providers and parents of small kids
Customer Reviews:
Great ideas to get your creative juices flowing.......2004-11-12
I got this book from the library prior to commiting to buying it. After ordering 8 books from Amazon this one wasn't one of them. Most of the ideas are too darn "cutsie" for me (i.e. cropping your baby's photos and putting mouse or bunny ears and whiskers is my definition of "cutsie"--not my style of scrapbooking, I'm not here to offend anybody who prefers this). The back of the book has lettering patterns and title ideas which anybody may find on numerous websites such as scrapbooking.com. I suggest this book is great for those begginers who need ideas for baby scrapbook themes: Documenting pre- & post-pregnancy, baby's firsts, baby's nursery, etc. It does not have much explanation on how the pages were constructed, but for my own sake I usually don't follow step-by-step,visualizing the parts of a layout from the photo itself. This book may be good for a beginner, but more advanced scrapbookers might find it too outdated.
Decent idea book, but hard to replicate what you see........2004-01-20
There's a ton of pages to look at, but not as much information about technique as some other books I've seen. If you're already into scrapbooking and just need some fresh ideas, this could be helpful.
Good creative ideas.......2003-01-25
I have been scrapbooking for years now and with baby #1 on the way wanted some additional creative ideas. This book does have some great ideas of varying complexity and documenting some of those moments that I may have not thought of. I recommend this for anyone doing baby pages.
Loved it!.......2002-06-04
This was a great idea book. Get this book before your baby even arrives to help give you pointers on what to take pictures of and things to keep for your scrapbook. Plus, it helps pass the time by! After my baby was born I still had "fetal-brain-drain" and needed ideas for page layouts. In the back there are ideas for page titles and poems to include in your baby's book. Well worth the money......
I just love it!.......2002-02-01
This book is great! It has wonderful ideas for putting together all the baby pictures. I would recommend it to anyone!

love those books.......2007-08-09
I loved the kumon books.i run a preschool and use the book at my school. each page is full of color and that gets the kids more interested in completing the pages
Excellent book!.......2007-05-13
I bought this book after having the "My First Book of Tracing" as a natural progression. My daughter absolutely loves it; we work on it almost every night.
perfect for a 3 1/2 year old who likes mazes.......2007-05-08
My son loved this book so much he sat for a half hour mastering these mazes before he agreed to put it down. Definitely worth the money. I suggest parents make some copies of the pages before their child begins. Also, it would be nice it the publisher made it spiral bound.
Really Easy Mazes.......2007-03-13
This is a good book for very young children (2+). There are a lot of really simple mazes (actually 80). Each maze is on an 8 1/2 x 11 page. The mazes get progressively harder, but they were all really easy for my three year old son. If I had let him, he would have finished a good portion of the book in just one sitting. As with all the Kumon workbooks, it is printed on good quality paper with colorful backgrounds. Also, there is a certificate of achievement in the back.
Great!.......2006-06-06
My almost 3 yr old and I love this book along with My Book of Tracing and My First Book of Mazes. We work a bit in each one since they all start out with nice, easy pages. The mazes are *really* easy and start out as short paths for tracing before looking like actual mazes. We work both maze books using a bingo chip which she guides along like a little car. This has worked well for her since the last ones are too hard for her and she can continue to do mazes at her level by switching books and revisiting mazes.

Great book!.......2007-04-11
If there is a toddler in your life, you are going to love this book of knitting patterns. The sweaters are adorable! And the patterns are not terribly difficult. Have fun!
Adorable Knits for Tiny Tots/Errata.......2007-03-13
I just wanted to mention that editors are not the designers. Yes, people make mistakes, including editors/publishers of designer's books, and this one is no exception. Easily solved in this case, just call the number on the book( back cover) and they will speedily( less than a fifteen minutes for me) e-mail you the errata page. They will also continue to be there for help if you find another problem that was not addressed yet. Perhaps they are in contact with the authors and can do that, better than we could.
I've done that with another book as well, "Little Badger Knits" and got an immediate reply and help from the publishers.
I would not write off a book because of mistakes that can easily be solved.
I am looking forward to knitting from this book and it certainly does have "adorable knits" in it!
adorable knits for tots.......2007-02-18
i agree that the sweaters are adorable but as one other reviewer stated that there were a lot of loose ends on the back side. the only one that i really liked was the front cover. i made it for my granddaughter who was supposed to be born on july 4th so i thought that it would be cute in red white and blue--which it is. and i will probably make it for my niece who is also expecting on july 4th this coming year. but after trying some of the other patterns that will be the only sweater i make from this book.
FRUSTRATION!.......2007-02-01
I am also an experienced knitter and have done quite a bit of cable work, but I have found the Robin Hood Jacket extremely frustrating. I feel like the author was too lazy to put everything into one graph or set of instructions. Instead I spend my time flipping pages trying to figure out where I am in the regular row and where I am in the cable rows. I have to force myself to pick up this project. If I hadn't put so much money into the yarn I would probably chuck it. I will not make another project from this book. I should have read the reviews before buying.
Not for the faint of heart.......2007-01-19
1. This book has beautiful projects.
2. They are not all easy.
3. I am a very experienced knitter.
4. I am making the dots and stripes baby blanket as a gift for my niece.
5. I am eliminating the dots because if there was another color change or another bobbin on my needles (12!) I was going to scream and tear my hair out. There is a slight possibility that I may duplicate-stitch them in when/if I'm done.
6. There are so many ends to weave in that the reverse side will have to be backed with fabric or another knit piece in order to make it givable.
7. I doubt I will try to make another project from this book, but if the author reads this and thinks maybe I'm going about it all the wrong way, I'd appreciate an e-mail. I want to like it, I really do.

Buy left-handed scissors for left-handed children........2007-08-18
I'm cheating -- I haven't seen the book...but I just want to say, if you have a left-handed child, they need left-handed scissors! Many scissors say "for right or left-handed." IT'S A LIE! Take a 'regular' pair of scissors with your left hand and try to cut along a line. Because of the way the blades are stacked, you lose sight of the line at the last minute and cut about 1/8th of an inch away from the line...it's incredibly frustrating and it's the reason my lefty son tends to hold righty scissors an a really contorted position. His cutting skills improved tremendously when I bought him a pair of truly left-handed scissors (which reverse the blades, not just change the shape of the handle). Search online -- there's a website that sells products made especially for left-handed people. OK, I'll get off my soapbox now. :-)
Kids' Love to Cut.......2007-05-09
The kids adore the Let's Cut book. I bought at least 10 of the Kumon books and the cutting has to be the top favorite workbook of both my 2 and 4 yr. olds.
Simply amazing! Fun book that builds skill and coordination........2007-01-01
I bought this book for my 4 year old who has been asking to use scissors for some time. I really felt she was too young to use them, but when I saw the book was recommended for ages 2 and up, I decided to let her try.
The book begins with very simple activities and slowly becomes more difficult. The illustrations are fun and colorful. There are instructions for parents that focus on positive reinforcement and ideas to keep your child interested when challenged. Within two weeks my child was cutting curves, sharp angles, difficult shapes and spirals. I was amazed! There is a certificate of achievement for the child when the book has been finished.
This is a great book to help your child learn to cut paper, and to build self confidence.
A wonderful book for children to learn to cut with scissors.......2006-08-14
I have been reviewing all of the books currently available in the Kumon First Steps Workbooks series, and LET'S CUT PAPER is the 4th and final one. It is just wonderful, like the other 3 books: LET'S STICKER AND PASTE, LET'S COLOR, and LET'S FOLD. This book gives young children (recommended age 2 and up) a fun first experience handling scissors.
My son is 8 yrs. old and is a normal boy in every way, except like many children, was slower to develop some of his fine motor skills. He has loved using all of these first steps workbooks, along with the regular Kumon workbooks. He has gained much in his ability to cut carefully using the simple exercises in this book. Please be sure to give your child a GOOD pair of scissors with this book! Cheap and junky scissors will lead to the projects looking chewed, not cut. Do your child a favor and let his projects look beautiful by giving him a good pair of scissors. Fiskars for children, with blunt or pointed tips are very good. We use the Crayola child's scissors, with all metal blades (not plastic) and these cut extremely well too.
Now armed with a good pair of scissors, what will your child be cutting? Well, there are 39 small pages for him to cut, beginning with simple things like cut the whiskers on the cat, the dog, and the tiger. Project #4 is cutting the square paper in half on the thick grey line, and arranging the 2 pieces to make a picture of a car. #6 has you do this, but cutting the square on a diagonal, and arranging the 2 pieces to make a boat.#7 has the child make 3 cuts across the square, and tape the 3 cut pieces in order to make a rocket. Project #8 is the same, with 3 cuts making 4 pieces to tape together...it is a tug of war rope with animals! My son loved playing this game, we each took an end and pulled to see whose animals won the tug of war (the tape will snap apart). The next few are cutting the aquare into 4 small squares and arranging the picture correctly, like a 4 pc. puzzle. Several projects involve cutting from the outside in, to free up the arms and legs of a teddy bear or cat, the wings and tail of a bird, etc. Some pages have the child cut and then fold the edges to make animals in a fenced pasture, etc. Then there is a section where the child cuts across the mouth of people and various animals. The mouths are wavy, curved, etc, and when cut, you can make the mouth closed, or open to see what they are eating. Several more pages are having the child cut along the grey line either in a spiral, or diminishing square, triangle, etc. to cut apart a spider web, or a fish line, or roses on a vine, or watermelons in a patch, or make a curly snake. All these teach the child to cut and turn the paper when the direction of the cutting line changes. Other pages have the child cut a square, circle, oval, triangle out of the center of the page to flip corrctly to be the lions face, the rhino's nose, etc. And at the end are objects to just cut out: #33 is a beach ball, #34 is a half a sandwich, #36 a hippo head, #38 a rabbit's head. Very simple, yet again teaching the children to carefully cut and reposition the paper while doing so. This is a very fun book, the artwork is fun and not babyish, is colorful, and printed on heavy paper. Many children LOVE scissors and love to cut things! So give them this book, and maybe it will save baby sister's hair from being cut off! After your child completes this book, I recommend Kumon's MY FIRST BOOK OF CUTTING, which has 40 more project pages for the scissor happy child to cut! In conclusion: a wonderful, wonderful little book!

Great book for almost 3's.......2007-10-12
My son and I went through the entire book last night -- he loved it! I'm going to buy the More Sticker & Paste. He really enjoyed the gluing. I thought this would be a great book to bring on a trip with the exception of the need for scissors (which wouldn't work on an airplane).
Highly Recommended by me --a teacher.......2007-01-09
This is an excellent book for teaching fine motor skills to little ones. I am a teacher and I highly recommend this for toddlers. My three year old loved it and wanted to do the whole book in one sitting.
Good activity book for curious toddlers.......2006-12-26
My two-and-half loves this book even though she is done with it two months ago; shes loves stickers too; she finished the first twelve projects in one day. We have been told that she has great attention span and excellent fine motor skills for a toddler. The Let's Sticker and Paste book is her favorite book and probably the easiest one of the four. For the fist few projects, she takes a sticker or several of them and paste them to an appropriate page. It gradually gets harders and requires some logical and fine motor skills by pasting one or two missing pieces of a puzzle to complete a picture.
Take this book with you for dining out and on a short trip. This book is expensive but it is worth it.
A Fun Little Craft Book for Children!.......2006-08-14
I recently discovered Kumon books and I am so glad I found them! They are really so wonderful; every child should be given these books to have creative fun! LET'S STICKER AND PASTE is part of the Kumon First Steps series, designed for ages 2 and up. I am using these with my son who is 8 yrs. old, and he also is using the Kumon books for older children, and he loves them all! Some children are slower to learn skills of cutting and pasting, holding pencils, etc. These Kumon books are fun and gentle ways to help children develop these skills.
LET'S STICKER AND PASTE is a very fun book containing 39 projects. We have worked through most of them. Projects 1-16 are double sided and involve using the enclosed stickers to finish the project. Projects 1-6 have the child freely use the stickers to make a playground scene, pasture scene, bugs on leaves, birds in the sky, a safari scene, fish in an aquarium, etc. Two projects have the child use stickers to dress the boy for winter play, and to decorate the girls apron. And the remaining have stickers the child places at a certain place to cover over the white area on the carrot, apple, orange, cucumber, etc. This is good preparation for being careful and learning correct placement. Projects 17 on use cut outs (parent cuts the objects out) for the child to place and glue onto the picture. I recommend using a glue stick or, our favorite, a ZIG brand glue pen. It's smaller applicator makes applying glue so easy for the child. We bought ours at Walmart in the scrapbooking department. Projects 17 on are printed on one side of the page, and involve the child pasting parts over a watermelon, the face on a horse or fox, the nose on a koala, the beak on the duck, the eyes, nose, and mouth on a panda and pig, etc. Some include 3-D type glue ons, such as a strip that sticks out to be the monkey or hippo's mouth, or the chick's beak sticks out. These are all very simple, and the results are statisfying! Projects 30 and 31 have the child gluing candles and decorations on a cake, or toys into the toy box. Pages 33-37 have the child glue the missing half on the frog, the plane, or they have 2-4 pieces to glue on like putting the missing squares in to finish the picture. And these are pictures of fire trucks, diggers, boats, etc. The last 2 projects are letting the child dab glue over the sky and sprinking on small cut out squares (the parent cuts these) to make snow falling on the snowman, or pink squares will be blossoms on the cherry tree. This book is lots and lots of fun that will provide parents and children with meaningful time spent together. It would make a great gift (along with a glue pen!) for the child who seems to have everything. I also recommend the other 3 books in this series: LET'S CUT PAPER, LET'S COLOR, and LET'S FOLD. I am reviewing them all, plus the other Kumon books. Enjoy!
