I do gourd pyrography and wanted a source of Indian designs to use in my pyrography. This book contains a nice selection and each group of designs includes an explaination of the design and when it was used.

There are notes for each page of designs detailing where the item was found and to what tribe they belong. There are also notes at the bottom of each "design" page. The information IS here.

Bleck - nothing but images, not informative!.......2005-02-16

This book is half filled with images, none of which have any descriptions as to which tribe the graphics are from. I am very dissapointed because this book is useless to me as an art teacher. If you want a good book on Tribal designs and motifs, check out another resource by Dover, titled, 'Ready-to-Use North American Indian Motifs.' It has 10 x's more graphics and each image is explained as far as tribe and geographical region.

Not your normal Native Design Book.......2007-08-20

I had serious reservations about the authenticity of a 1975 Dover Publications book on Native American art, but was pleasantly surprised with the quality and detail of content. Authentic Indian Designs has one of the most thorough sections on Mississippian and Northwest Coast, Alaska & Arctic I have ever seen. Illustrations, when not black & white pictures, are clearly drawn & easily transferable for most any crafts project. Accompanying descriptions, though brief, at least list the original location & some information about the objects. The smallest section was on Eastern Woodlands in the Historic Period with a total of 11 pages, most on wampum belts & finger weaving/beading. Definitely a well rounded source for Historical reenactors, Native crafts enthusiast & serious Scouts.

This book is good for those who are in the creative art field i.e. Native American Art. You get a glimpse of the authentic art of the Native American culture. From there it is a small leap into your own creative art projects. Highly recommend this book for such usage.

This book is a visual encyclopedia of Native designs, from prehistoric to recent history. Tribal art and artifacts are covered from all over, for example, there are images and sketches of Navajo sandpaintings, Eskimo clothing, Pueblo pottery, plus masks, belts, and even just basic designs! If you do beadwork, quillwork, pottery, or other Native arts, this book is a must for your library!

This book is designs only, in black and white, very little text reference. It could be a good book as a supplemental design for southwest decor artist, but not recommended as a starter. The designs are clearly drawn and good size. Not recommended as a "must have" for southwest native american designs.

This book ws interesting, and it did have quite a bit of information on the subject. Somehow I think that it could have given more information on the designs.

A history of native art!.......2000-10-16

I wanted to learn about the western hemisphere art as a whole and not country by country and that's precisely what I found in this book. Well detailed designs and astonishing information such as poems, myths, symbols explanations... unfortunately, some countries -as Ecuador- are not represented and that's a pitty because they have many motifs to show to the world. Anyway, I think this is a must in decorators' or art historian's library!

This is a book of black and white graphics only. No pictures of how some of the designs were used. Mostly north west designs. No graphs. Your on your own with this one.

This book is a helpful tool when working on American Indian art. I used it to do some designs in my kitchen and they look really great and liven up the room.
