      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-24

      An amazing amount of information for the homebuilder. Very well written, entertaining and up to date.

      5 out of 5 stars Packed with Information.......2005-09-29

      This is another great addition to my library. Very informative, I really like the case studies.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book.......2001-05-24

      The book helped me most in the following areas:

      1) What is involved in kitplane construction - risks and benifits, even the benifits of purchasing a used certified aeroplane.
      2) Showed me how to think in terms of aviation building with safety as a priority.
      3) Covers info from the kit purchase stage to the test flight.
      4) Emphasized that it is helpful to understand all forms of construction (metal, wood) no matter what kind of aeroplane you are building. The book covers composite, metal, metal monocoque, wood construction.

      This is a must buy for people who are wondering what it takes to build a kitplane and are undecided about whether they should build one.

      5 out of 5 stars A must read book for anyone considering a Kit Homebuilt.......1999-07-04

      This book is not biased in stating everyone can build a homebuilt. Infact early on Ron makes it clear that homebuilding is not for everyone. He takes you through the different construction materials as well as things that you don't think about. The case studies are what realy makes this book standout. These are planes being built by people with the same amount of aircraft construction as any person contemplating building.

      5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and objective look at kitplanes.......1999-01-15

      I like this book. The author made me think of the pros and cons of building a kitplane versus buying a certified model. It almost seems like he tries to talk you out of it at first. This makes you think if you have the space, time, skills, and dedication to build your own safe airplane. I definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about homebuilding. After that, the author dives into all of the various construction methods and gives quite a bit of detail on each. I was surprised. He even includes case studies of each type of construction (ie composite, metal, wood, etc) on a particular builder and their project. READ IT!

      3 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as it could be.......2005-01-01

      I got this book because this is the book that seems to be recommended the most for people with an interest in building rubber-powered models. For the most part, it's a good book that does provide a good introduction to the hobby. However, I agree with a previous reviewer that a glossary would be helpful, and also this book is sorely in need of updating. It's clear that the book was written some time ago, and the copyright's just been renewed periodically. The instructions for the models could really use a parts list of what's needed (so that you don't have to go thru the directions over and over again trying to figure out what you need), and I think the book in general needs a good editing.

      3 out of 5 stars Rubber Powered Model Airplanes: Comprehensive?.......2001-07-20

      Having recently purchased and read Don Ross' RUBBER POWERED MODELS:COMPREHENSIVE BUILDING AND FLYING BASICS, PLUS ADVANCED DESIGN YOUR OWN INSTRUCTION, I have a suggestion to the author and/or publisher.....provide a glossary of definitions to define the many abbreviations that the "veteran" hobbyist use. Since the book is aimed mainly at the "newcomer" that may not understand "OOS" means "Out Of Sight"(for example) he/she may feel that the text is too technical miss the great advice of an experienced modeler. This is not a criticism but a suggestion coming from someone that enjoyed the book, but wondered what a few of the abbreviations meant. I especially liked the chopping tool plan. Thank you for an informative book on a great hobby.

      1 out of 5 stars I'm disappointed........2000-07-28

      This book, as I understand, is for beginners from age 8 to 12, have never had any experience with model aircraft. It teaches how to nail down sticks and putting on glue sort of things. Hardly discuss any theory. Absolutely has nothing to do with modern rubber powered contest model aircraft. It's published in 1998. If change this to 1948 it wouldn't surprise me at all, since it does reflect any development in model aircraft technology in the recent half century.

      5 out of 5 stars Well written, every thing for the beginer to the expert........1998-11-06

      I was pleasantly surprised at the completness of this book. I will be able to use this book in my 9th grade technology class for basic flight information. The advanced information will also be used by the students entering the science olympiad.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent for modelers interested in rubber powered craft........1998-10-17

      I haven't built a model plane in 40 years, but have begun to do so again as a result of my daughter's interest in paper-and-stick models. Looking for guidance, I came across this book by Don Ross. It is an ideal place for a neophyte to start. Mr. Ross builds a foundation for understanding models by taking the reader through building a simple rubber powered stick model, progresses to an R.O.G., and finally, built-up models. That's just the beginning. Detailed discussions of rubber motors, propellers, trimming the aircraft for flight, model design, etc. complete a very fascinating introduction to rubber powered flying machines. I have read this book twice so far. And still I have not absorbed all that Mr. Ross has to tell me.

      Two minor criticism: 1-There are a couple rough spots in the writing--things the editor should have caught. (But with careful re-reading I believe I understood what was being said.)

      2- More drawings and pictures would be welcome, though there are many excellent drawings in the book already. (May be that's why I would like more!) It would be great to see additional examples of the planes Mr. Ross designed.

      If you want to build rubber powered planes, or even only think you do, this book by Don Ross provides a launching pad for your aspirations.

      5 out of 5 stars "Flying Models" by Don Ross.......1999-12-27

      This companion to Don Ross's "Rubber Powered Model Airplanes" covers updated information on flying and building rubber powered models. But best of all it now includes information related to flying the new immensely popular micro models. Micro radio control models powered by electric, CO2, as well as rubber are included in this book. Most everything needed to be successful with small model airplanes is included in this book. Everything from tools, materials and construction to flight trimming is addressed. I would highly recommend this book as well as Don's first book "Rubber Powered Model Airplanes" as two books that most any small model airplane enthusiast should have in their library.

      5 out of 5 stars Superbly illustrated and still the best book.......2005-11-15

      As the other reviewers state, this is the book to get on free flight indoor model airplanes. The author illustrates / draws for a living; his well crafted and instructive drawings are better than photographs in showing you how to build such models.

      I agree with the other reviewer that Novice or Limited Pennyplane is by far now a better class to build and fly for your first competition class model.

      As others comment, some aspects are a bit dated but it is still the best book. I own two copies.

      5 out of 5 stars The best book on indoor aeromodeling!.......2001-08-03

      Ron William's book Is an incredible resource for indoor flyers. Indoor models have seemed mysterious even to many outdoor flyers, but this book shows how to go from a simple Delta-Dart like glider to world class F1D planes weighing around 1 gram. Although the Aircraft types are a bit dated (Easy-Bee is now rather difficult, F1D planes are now much smaller and covered in plastic, Superthin plastics replaced many other coverings...)The building techniques are the same, and so are the formulas for loading and prop-form carving. Contest flyers should also get Lew Gitlow's newer book "indoor flying models" but William's Book is a truly indespencible resource.

      5 out of 5 stars A Classic Book!.......1999-01-08

      This is a fantastic book. Although it's getting old, it's probably the best book ever written about building indoor duration models. It may also be the best book ever written about model aircraft.

      The author obviously put an enormous amount of effort into it, and it will be very useful to anyone who wants to begin building these fragile and beautiful models.

      The book is almost an inch thick, and contains detailed instructions on almost every step involved in building indoor models. If you've never built a completely successful rubber-power model plane before, this book might be a really good place to start. The first chapter starts with a beginner's model. Subsequent chapters cover more advanced topics, up to the world-championship F1D class. You could easily go from any skill level to being able to build any model in the book, using only the instructions and plans given in the book.

      Although the book concentrates on rubber duration, there is also a chapter on scale models and one on hand-launched gliders. There are many illustrations and they're excellent (I think the author is an architect).

      The only thing wrong with this book is that it is now getting old. For example, chapters two and three which describe the easy-bee class, were obviously written at a time when the class was was less competitive than it is today. Nevertheless, the building and flying information given in the book is pretty timeless. People who want more up-to-date information should probably buy Lew Gitlow's more recent book as well.

      5 out of 5 stars Useful, enjoyable, and still the best book on its subject........1997-12-15

      Ron Williams' book is a pleasure that I've gone back to many times, both to enjoy his prose and his clear drawings and to answer questions and come up with ideas on my current project. A dog eared copy from the library was responsible for my entry into this hobby. Williams covers several types of indoor flying, with plans and instructions for a number of models, ranging from the easiest beginner's model to challenging F1D models with a couple of feet of wingspan that only weigh as much as a dollar bill. Both the prose and the artwork are clear and elegant; you might be tempted to copy some of the drawings to hang in your workshop. The book is showing its age slightly; it has no mention of Tan II, and the EZB designs aren't anywhere near as light as we have today, but it still serves as a wonderful introduction and reference. Williams also didn't seem to realize how easy Limited Pennyplane is, recommending instead EZB as the first serious model. Despite these small flaws, I recommend this book without hesitation, and I'm trying to get another copy to give to newcomers. This book should be republished!

            Book Description

            The airline industry is in a state of radical restructuring as its markets and key stakeholders (customers, airline labour and management groups, governments, and the financial community) adjust to the new aviation realities. Airline executives can be forgiven for being overwhelmed by technology proliferation, zestful new paradigm airlines, September 2001, business cycles, Iraq, SARS, and animal diseases. The leadership challenge for all carriers is now to select and execute appropriate business models, thinking both 'inside' and 'outside' the 'box', to turn conventional wisdom upside down to achieve dramatic increases in productivity.

            Some legacy carriers still need to create an effective strategy for much larger cycles that encompass major discontinuities. Burdened by past decisions, they are forced to fight with one hand tied behind their back to 'convert volume to value', to survive and prosper. Some new airlines have been at the forefront of shaping change, developing a vision of the mass-market, assessing the customer value of their core processes, and using a 'back-to-basics' business approach. Both groups should take a sideways glance at what works in other industries and implement those insights into actions. Some examples featured in this book include:

            — Wal-Mart's virtually real time inventory system;
            — Target's business model based around a unique customer experience;
            — Dell Computers' business model based around direct sales and mass customization;
            — Unilever's organizational structure around value creation and value delivery departments;
            — Shell International's development of scenarios of alternate futures;
            — Harrah's Entertainment's use of information technology to recognize and reward valuable customers;
            — The Warehouse's communication system with its suppliers to produce efficiency at both ends for the common benefit of the customer;
            — Nissan's cross-functional teams;
            — DoCoMo's management of human passion in customers;
            — Nike's innovation resulting in 'industry-transforming' products;
            — Toyota's 'Construction of Cost Competitiveness for the 21st Century'.

            Written by an experienced airline business strategist and international in scope, this wide-ranging book identifies challenges and problems, presents comprehensive analyses and suggests some solutions. Key features include:

            — a comparison with 14 other business sectors (unique amongst aviation books);
            — examples of airlines who have changed their business models;
            — a detailed study of branding, including mistakes and critical success factors;
            — how to manage risk by transforming supplier relationships;
            — plausible scenarios for the future to prepare for major transformation;
            — the emerging role of passenger management systems to identify, serve, and retain high value passengers.

            The author identifies the new realities and the obstacles to change, the need to revitalize product development and renew the customer experience. He deals with public policy and the need to revise supplier relationships, especially with aircraft maintenance providers, and looks at successes and failures in other industries. This is rounded off with a clarion call to governments, labour unions, airports, manufacturers, suppliers and above all airline management, to shake off the past, and to address the challenges and opportunities. His approach is to provide impartial analysis and pragmatic insights into vital enablers of change, potential business models, execution strategy, ways to make stakeholders more influential, wisdom from other businesses, and to present scenarios to make busy executives stop and think.

            The readership includes the broadest cross-section of practitioners in the global airline and related industries, as well as those affected by the industry and seeking a deeper understanding of it. This includes including airlines, government civil aviation departments, the aviation divisions of the financial community (investment banks and leasing companies), aircraft manufacturers and their suppliers, airports, information technology companies, as well as customers and other stakeholders.
