Textbooks for students ... the on cheap........2007-09-12
Product showed up quickly. In excellent condition. I've recommended this seller to all of my co-students.
Perfect Companion to the Online Material.......2007-09-03
The online material is fine, but I am a little traditional and like to read from a paper page rather than a screen. I think it's just a matter of what you like.
More Than Just an Exam Cram.......2006-09-26
Although this book is centered on the preparation for the reader to take one of the CCNA examinations, it is more than that. In reality this book is an excellent introduction into the whole concept behind routing as conducted 'a la Cisco.' It covers routing in general and then gives an excellent introduction into the Cisco products that handle routing. Since Cisco is the largest provider of routing equipment this book serves as a source of information as to just which Cisco products are best suited for your particular application.
Beyond simple routing, which is complex enough, in today's world security is always a problem. This book goes into some considerable details in the descriptions of security aspects, including a full chapter on Access Control Lists to limit who has access to what data.
Of course the book is basically oriented to passing the test, and if that is your goal here is the information you need, including sample questions and more. The CD included with the book has more material, including interactive media explaining some 25 activities visually demonstrating key topics and a Flash-based simulation and visualization learning tool.

A Lab Book to go Along with the Course.......2007-04-01
Switching Basics is the third course of four in the CCNA program. Specifically this book will concentrate on these main areas of CCNA 3:
. Advanced IP addressing techniques (VLSM)
. Routing protocols,RIPv2, single-area OSPF and EIGRP
. Switching technologies and LAN design
. Switch configurations: security, STP, VLANs and VTP.
The format of this book is of exercises. These vary from 'select one from column A to match one from column B,' to define these terms, to descriptions of optional test equipment you may be using. It's sort of a sample test that is in the form of a whole book. The completion of this book will leave you in good shape to continue with the final CCNA course that follows. The pages are perforated so that they may be torn out and handed in if you are using this book as part of a course.
My Lab Book.......2007-02-12
ths lab book purchased was missing diagrams. when this was pointed out,( noted which printing was in error) a new book was sent with the same errors. I then receid emails wanting to charge me for the additional book!!!! I of course end the second book back, but never received any appology or compensation for a book that is lacking all the information.

Good workbook if you know the answers.......2007-08-06
Studying for the CCNA myself I bought this book to help compliment my reading. My only complaint is the lack of an answer key. I would have loved to be able to complete a chapter and then grade myself appropriately to learn. Other than this flaw I feel the content is very good at forcing you to remember key concepts, terms and scenarios.
I have been in IT for over 10 years, trust me when I say that you need to know this stuff THOROUGHLY.
A 'Work Book' to go along with the course........2007-03-26
Although this book is billed as a 'Study Guide' is is more like what we used to call a 'work book.' It matches, on a paragraph by paragraph basis version 3.1.1 of the Cisco Networking Academp Program CCNA 2 course. But instead of just being descriptive in nature, it attempts to expand your hand-on knowledge of working with Cisco equipment. Here you actually configure a router, not just read about it. And as you go along you are asked questions that can be answered in the book itself. The pages are tear-outs, perferated near the center of the book so that they can be handed in as part of homework assignments.
In the lab section there are some 70 different labs, 55 of these match the ones recommended in the online course. The labs are broken down into three sections Curriculum, Comprehensive, and Challenge which are of increasing difficulty.
After completing the exercises and hands-on labs in this book, you will be well prepared to pass the test and to continue to the following Cisco courses.

Are you a router novice? This book is for you........2003-04-09
If you are new to using router, this book is certainly for you. It provides very valuable tips, introduces to many features of variety of brands. The basic projects in the book help you build your skill and confidence. The book also covers the safety techniques that are particularly important for a new router enthusiast. I give this book what it truely deserves - all five stars!!
Good one...........2002-12-07
Not having a lot of experience with routers, I was looking for a beginning level book and this one filled all my expectations. I didn't realize how much you could do with a router and a good selection of cutters. Patrick Spielman must have had me in mind when he wrote and illustrated this book, because it answered most all of my questions. I also purchased The New Router Handbook by the same author (see separate review). I would reccommend both of these books to anyone who wants to get the full potential out of his/her router.
Saved me a lot more grief & money.......2002-09-05
I am somewhat experienced with router operations, I thought!
I bought a Freud FT 2000EP last year, my first hgh powered plunge router. After several weeks floundering about trying to figure out how to operate the 2000 based on my experience with my lower powered fixed base router and the piece of garbage Freud packs in with the tool as an owner's/instruction manual, I decided I had to get some help, before I chopped up any more wood or myself.
I bought this book and The New Router Handbook, by Spielman also. After reading almost half of Router Basics I can now operate my Freud router safely and know how to make some of the adjustments properly. It's sad that one has to buy an "after market" publication in order to be able to safely & effectively operate an individual power tool purchased from someone else. The operating manual sent with my FT 2000EP meets only absolutely minimum standards when using the tool (MAY keep them afloat in a product liability court room). This book is a necessity if you have never operated a plunge router before and/or have the misfortune to get one with an operating manual as inadequate as mine had packed with it. Spielman saved my bacon and his book is a very enjoyable read to boot.
I have picked up a lot of new pointers on general router operation I thought I already understood, I didn't. I've been woodworking for most of my 64 years and it sure feels good to be taken back to the basics. Wished all learning (or re-learning) could be this enjoyable. Read this book before you "light off" that new router for the first time. It'll save you a lot of money for the destroyed wood, grief from your damaged ego and maybe even a finger or two.

Wonderful introduction.......2000-07-19
I recently became interested in woodworking, when I received a table saw as a Father's Day gift. (Okay I admit that I made copies of the ad from a newspaper circular and left it lying around the house where my wife would surely see it - taped to the coffee creamer, in the bottom of a cereal bowl, on her pillow - but I was still a little surprised when it appeared.)
I didn't know much about woodworking, but I knew I needed a router. I bought the Freud FT2000E router (also from Amazon). Great router, lousy manual.
After reading the reviews of Spielman's other router books (The Router Handbook and The New Router), I settled on Router Basics as the best choice for a beginner. I have not been disappointed.
The writing is clear, as are the photos that illustrate the text. The most important quality is the thoroughness with which Spielman describes each router feature and operation. For example, he suggests using the router while unplugged, to get a feel for the weight and controls. Next, he recommends using the router while on, but without a bit inserted. Finally, he walks you through inserting a bit and using the router for real.
I think most authors and first-time router users would agree this is a good sequence, but I doubt few authors would take the time to outline it in the text.
After getting a feel for the router, you can work through a series of projects designed to develop your routing skills. For example, the first project is a workbench that uses mortise-and-tenon joinery for the legs and braces. (Mortises are cut-outs in a piece of wood; the tenons are the protrusions from a second piece that fit into the cut-out.) Other projects include building a router table (a handy accessory) and instructions for routing signs.
If you're just getting started with routers, I heartily recommend this book.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A book understand how routing protocols work.......2006-08-30
This book provides an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to understand how routing protocols work in depth.
I liked the approach of explaining the why behind the how, and the fact that it's not focused on passing a certification exam, but rather giving the tools to configure and troubleshoot routing in simple and not-so-simple networking systems.
The tables with the characteristics of each routing protocol are not only a good way to explain and summarize the concepts, but they are also a good reference for further consultation of the book.
The examples are complete and clearly described, giving a real life consistency to the theory described.
A consistent portion of the book is dedicated to the OSPF protocol. Here Macfarlane does a great job in not only clearly explaining the characteristic of OSPF, and how it works, but he also provides tips on how to design networks using OSPF, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.
One can tell that the core of the book was born in a classroom, in front of students who could ask questions and give feedback, therefore improving its clearness and completeness. The book has a didactic spin that is missing from other networking books.
This is so much more than just a routing protocols manual: it's a textbook.
Macfarlane knows how to TEACH Routing.......2006-08-07
NETWORK ROUTING BASICS: Understanding IP Routing in Cisco Systems, by James Macfarlane, is worthy of consideration if you're interested in learning from someone who knows how to TEACH routing. Macfarlane's approach, humor, sidebars, and up-to-date information make this book a cut above others I've read and reviewed. After "Networking Overview" and "Routing Basic" chapters (One and Two), the reader will have to slow down a bit to absorb "Static Routing" and especially "Dynamic Routing" (Three and Four). The middle part of the book (Five through Eight) focuses on routing protocols: RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF; the last two chapters are helpful as introductions to "External Routing Protocols" (Nine) and "Redistribution and Default Routing" (Ten). This layout serves the goals of the author well and seven appendices provide a set of welcome supplements. While this book may indirectly assist in CCNA certification, I would only refer to it after consulting a book designed directly for that goal.

Since its introduction in 1993, the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) has been used extensively to allow network routers to optimize the transmission of Internet Protocol (IP) packets across the Internet. As Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and corporations seek to make their network infrastructures faster and more reliable, more administrators need to get acquainted with BGP (now in version 4). John Stewart's BGP4: Inter-Domain Routing on the Internet provides a short, authoritative guide to how Internet routing works generally, along with the specifics of the BGP4 protocol.
Early sections introduce the IP protocol, the foundation of the Internet, including a concise description of IP header structure. Routing basics are also discussed, including External Gateway Protocols (EGPs) and Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs). The book presents protocols used to determine routing efficiency, including distance-vector and linking-state routing protocols.
Next, Stewart covers the Bridging Control Protocol (BGP) itself and includes discussion of BCP sessions and the message types used to send routing information between routers in BGP. A particular strength of this text is that it explains networking infrastructure with clear examples of hypothetical configurations for your ISP or organization, all using BGP. The author explains both single homing and multihoming (both with a single ISP and multiple ISPs) and explains the strategies that BGP uses to filter routing information efficiently. The book closes with new extensions to BGP, including the notion of BGP communities.
This handy introduction to one of the most important--and slightly mysterious--Internet protocols is a must for any networking professional who deals with Internet routing. --Richard Dragan
Customer Reviews:
Strong introduction to the subject.......2006-10-06
As many reviews attest to, this book is short, clearly and logically presented, and covers the majority of bgp4 attributes, without going into specific implementations. Even though it does not go into vendor-specific implementations, each attribute of the protocol discussed is explained through highly simpified network topologies, supported by diagrams. The author gives clear descriptions for each of these example networks, and then goes on to explain a certain routing policy problem and its solution using bgp4. I believe the intro/refresher on IP in the beginning of the book is good because you get the authors terms and understanding of IP before hearing his application of it to bgp in the following sections. Includes a brief introduction to load-sharing via bgp (although does not mention bgp multipath or multihop by name, it does reference the basic concept, and the concept of using loopbacks as bgp next-hops in order to achieve) and also provides a brief introduction to the capability of multi-protocol bgp, which I believe contemporary readers may be looking for information on - specifically, regarding vpnv4. The text does not mention this specific multi-protocol extension, but the general intro to mp bgp is enough to serve as an introduction to the subject. I would recommend this to anyone with a basic understanding of IP, seeking to understand, or increase their understanding of how routing is done on a global scale over the internet, or how the bgp protocol itself is designed and functions. 4 stars because on the end of page 86, the text simply cuts off mid-sentence, and begins with a new sentenced on page 87, with seemingly no obvious explanation.
Finally BGP4 without Cisco Configurations.......2003-02-22
This book was a pleasure to read because it focussed on the technology issues regarding BGP4. There was enough TCP/IP to serve as a review and then discussion on the topic of the book. Whereas how to configure a router is important, it is refreshing to read a book that talks about the technical aspects and leaves configuration to other books (especially Cisco configurations)
What can I say, great book!.......2002-11-26
Great BGP book, sure wish it was longer.
Great primer for BGP but to general for practical use.......2002-08-04
A great general discussion that boils the RFC down to something readable. If this is your first journey into BGP then this book does an excellent job of giving a broad overview of the protocol without burying the reader in the details.
The first 30 (or 116) pages gives IMHO redundant background on IP addressing, CIDR, Distance Vector protocols, and other information I believe anyone learning BGP should already know.
The book gives an excellent treament on the different message types and what they look like, but I would have preferred more details on how IBGP and EBGP differ i.e. resetting MEDs or local-pref, appending local AS, modifying NEXT_HOP attribute, etc.
The route selection process (one of my personal favorite parts of BGP) only deals with a subset (6) of the 10 or 11 options Cisco or Juniper will use. There is no mention of comparing Cisco's weight, prefix origin, MEDs between AS, cluster-list, or comparing IGP metric. To be fair though, weights are vendor specific and some of these options may have been introduced after the 1999 publication date.
My biggest frustration with the book is that being vendor agnsotic there are no details as to configuration or how one would actually implelement any of the information given. There is also no discussion on troubleshooting BGP, what typical configurations would look like, best practices in filtering or installation.
For those who already have an understanding of BGP or who have used the protocol in the field, I would recommend the Complete Reference Juniper Network Routers chapter 12 on Interdomain routing Theory or as a fall-back the much more dry and difficult to get through, Internet Routing Architectures by Halabi.
This book is best for the BGP beginner or someone who needs a refresher on what BGP is trying to accomplish and is willing to read other books on how to configure their actual routers.
Best book on BGP.......2002-03-16
This is an awesome introduction to BGP. I highly recommend it for anyone just learning BGP and also as a review for those who already know it. Good luck.

EIGRP explained.......2005-03-06
Excellent book with great technical content. Worth every penny. This book and "EIGRP Network Design Solutions" are the only two books written specifically about EIGRP. Both are great. Both are no longer in print and can be attained cheaply through the Amazon Z-Shops...
Nicely written book for rarely found subject.......2001-06-09
Pros:
This is one of the only two books available covering EIGRP in details. Most of other routing references do not have the same level on in-detail descriptions and protocol-specific information this book has. Add to that the smooth style of the authors which makes reading this book a pleasant experience
Cons:
May be EIGRP's code is not finalized yet and there are many enhancements added after this book is published. I think the authors need to issue a second edition with more information regard new features in the protocol. Although the book gives numerous examples of real life scenarios, It cames short of small pool of theoretical details " which are necessary if you run into *other* scenario rather than the ones listed. Finally, as many networks are migrating from IGRP to EIGRP, I think the authors should designate section for the migration process
Consise and precise.......2001-01-30
For a book that weighs in at only 100 pages it seemed rather lightweight in comparison to other EIGRP/routing books I have read. But the quality of the content is very consise. The book is well paced and covers all aspects of EIGRP. From the mechanics of the protocol through to setup and network design decisions. The protocol troubleshooting sections are worth the price of the book in itself ( Far better than any others I have read) . And for the low price this is an excellent purchase.
Top Notch.

After 3 books - this was the one........2002-09-20
This beats out any of the books (3) I've read about the subject. This book coupled with ICND from Cisco and some practice with a couple of real routers or simulated should definitely be enough. It was very easy reading - yet informative. Subnetting can be nasty but this guy makes it easy in my opinion. I passed the exam with flying colors as a result. I've lent the book out on three occasions and everyone was happy with it compared to other books out there. I think the secret is that it actually teaches you as opposed to memorizing what may be on the test. I hope this guy writes for advanced exams.
Good luck

924 need I say more?.......2001-07-16
Ok here is the skinny, I did notice the errors in the book, some of the explanations I had to read over and over as well as check online sources ...This is the recommended procedure for doing anything, I feel for those who read books and expect authoritative definitions. Anyways I picked up this book with no knowledge of Cisco Infrastructure----thats right zippo, I work at a Helpdesk position reccomending products including cisco. This book in a month helped me get a 924 on the CCNA exam. In fact I thought the exam was rather simple. The book was easy reading and I never fell asleep once, unlike tood lammelle's books. So this is the answer, if you want CCNA read this book. Has some errors but that shouldn't hinder your progress any. I WILL be purchasing the BCSN by Mr. Myhre.
EXCELLENT BOOK FOR CCNA 2.......2001-03-07
This is an EXCELLENT practical book for the CCNA 2 exams.
If there were a LAB EXAM on the CCNA 2 test, this book would be in the same category as that by Andrew Bruce Caslow for the CCIE Lab.
It is the only CCNA book I have come across that TRULY gives you the hands-on experience that you need on the job whilst preparing you for the CCNA exams.
It adopts the same approach recommended by Andrew Bruce Caslow, the author of the best-selling CCIE lab book - "Cisco Certification - Bridges, Routers, and Switchees For CCIE's" (Prentice Hall), through a THOROUGH and SYSTEMATIC APPROACH to configuring and troubleshooting Cisco devices, thereby helping you to understand the practical aspects of what you are learning.
This book would definitely make you feel as though you are in the workplace in view of the many PRACTICAL LAB SCENARIOS introduced in Chapter 5 and gradually built up through to 14. It is also packed full of robust diagrams that help you the learning process.
In my view, this is the BEST CCNA 2 book out there. A SUPERB book for those willing to put their Cisco skills into practice without simply cramming to pass the exams.
Well done Mr Myhre.
Wait until the next version.......2000-12-22
I'm the third person to post a review on this book. The first person said he hasn't read the book but the instructor was great in a classroom. And he posted a review on the book?
I have no doubt the author is a great instructor, however, the errors in this book may not be his fault at all. I understand mistakes will be made in printing, but there were mistakes in the PRACTICE TESTS ANSWERS! Mistakes IN the answers and then in spellings. There are many mistakes throughout the book that will hopefully be corrected when the next edition is published. I'm glad I understood some of these concepts before I read this book. Otherwise I'd be going into the CCNA Exam with the wrong knowledge. Again, I'm not taking digs at the author, but the book has too many mistakes printed in it in the wrong places! (un hem.....the practice test answers)
Also, I was hoping the CD was going to be an interactive test prep software. I was WRONG! It's only a Network Management Program. Why would anyone want one of these when they are PREPARING for a CCNA exam. The book would have been worth the money if it was a test prep CD.
Last thing, the Labs and Scenario's.....were we supposed to buy our own Routers to participate in these labs? How was one supposed to do the labs if we don't own routers, switches, cables, etc.....am I expecting too much from this book? For(this much)...I think not. If I'm not being fair...please someone...let me know. Give me another point of view! I don't think this edition is worth the money. If the included CD was something that would help for test preparations....then it might be worth the price.
A great instructor.......2000-12-07
While I have not read this particular book, I took the Cisco BSCN course taught by Robert Myhre. He is easily one of the best technical instructors I have ever had. If he writes anywhere near as well as he teaches, you can't go wrong with his books.
