1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2005-03-29

I was very excited to order this book to start making a sweater for my boyfriend. Unfortunately the book is full of sweater vests and only a few simple patterns. You could easily find similar patterns free online, so I definitely don't think it's worth the $35!

5 out of 5 stars If you love color, try this book.......2002-03-01

I know the title says "Sweaters for Men", but women will love this book too. The structure and color of each sweater are lovely and the knitting is not too complicated.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring all knitters.......2001-11-03

Sweaters for Men is a beautiful book, excellent photographs. The directions are plain, clear and easy to follow. I liked the schematic that showed all increases, decreases, bind offs. I bought yarn at my local store and made a vest and have started a crew neck sweater. I will probably make two more sweaters from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great but EXPENSIVE.......2001-07-28

I got the book yesterday and my husband immediately picked out the cover sweater. I did a search for the yarn and found out that the sweater would cost $... to make. Other patterns use cashmere or pashimina which is also costly. I do like the schematics but I find it very boring to knit a seed stitch sweater even though the yarn is fabulous. Also, I wish they had included more bulky patterns. It will take months to knit a man's sweater on 8s.

      4 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointing.......2001-07-28

I love the simple patterns but the cost of the yarns recommended is really high. I know you can substitute yarns, but it's still quite expensive. Also, I wish there had been more sweaters on larger needles.

      Book Description

This inspired collection of patterns for mother and baby includes designs with a simple flare and an elegant, modern feel for use with organically grown, undyed yarns. The projects are designed for beginning to average knitters so that essential baby accessories such as booties, mittens, hats, and simple knitted toys are quickly completed and instantly cherished. A cot blanket is an example of a group project designed to be made in one evening, and slightly more ambitious designs include an adorable dress, a chunky jacket, or a kimono sweater for a baby and wonderful, cozy items for mothers such as an unusual "bump" sweater for pregnant women, nursing sweaters that are convenient and stylish, and herb-scented pillows that delight the eye and soothe the spirit.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Patterns, Straight-Forward Instructions.......2007-09-15

I adore this book! I went on a hunt not to long ago for a unique baby sweater pattern that wasn't too hokey, out-dated, gaudy, or overly simplified. I wanted something special...I finally found that perfect design in this book. I rarely purchase knitting books, but this one is a must-have for anyone who does baby knitting.

The thing I like most about this book is how the designer takes a pattern and demonstrates how the user can make that item for either a boy or a girl. For example, the baby kimono on the cover of the book is the girls' version with picot edging, but there is a more masculine boy's version without the detailing. The same goes for a pair of booties, which are shown in traditional form for a boy, and with flower embroidery and ribbon for a girl. There are 3 innovative Mommy sweaters; one adjustable sweater for pregnancy and two attractive pieces which accommodate nursing. No need to buy the natural/organic yarns used in the book; as with all patterns, yarn can be easily substitued by matching gauge.

Instructions are clear for the intermediate knitter, and an appendix demonstrates seaming techniques--although it lacks the one I needed for the Jasmine lace-edged sweater (I eventually figured out through trial and error). Another thing I didn't particularly like is the aesthetics of the square shaping under the arms of the sweaters. The 'procedure' for arm shaping is simple, but I think curved shaping would look better. All in all, however, I find this book extremely delightful and I will be knitting many of the patterns.

      5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2007-07-15

If you are knitter and you know someone who is pregnant, this is the book for you. The baby patterns are precious but the pregnant and nursing mother patterns are even better. Very clever sweater designs for wear during the pregnancy and for discreet nursing once the little one arrives.

      5 out of 5 stars worth owning.......2007-03-20

A really nice book of baby items. I am currently working on the cover sweater in the boy version. Lion brand had a similar one on line, but I preferred this one, and am using the Lion cashmere blend as a substitute. The directions are clear but not for the real beginner. Have marked off several others in the book that I might make. Worth it overall.

5 out of 5 stars The best baby knitting pattern book I own!!.......2007-03-09

I can't say enough good things about this book. I have made almost all of the patterns in this book, and I can't say that for most knitting books I own. The patterns have good pictures, clear instructions, and I have yet to find a mistake in the patterns. The designs are simple and classic, yet unique. And a bonus... many of the patterns call for Blue Sky Alpaca's Organic cotton, which is pretty affordable and not too hard to find (and probably my all-time fave cotton yarn). By far the best baby knitting book I've found.

5 out of 5 stars Great simple designs.......2007-03-08

The designs are simple and classy and beautiful for any baby. Can be used for non-organic yarns as long as the gauge is the same. Great universal patterns and perfect gift ideas.

      2 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2007-07-29

I was looking for more on the instruction side of knitting with beads, not just patterns that utilize beads. The pictures weren't illuminated enough to see the garment or object. I guess I wouldn't recommend this one.

It is a great book for learning to knit with beads. It had all
the information I needed and great patterns to try. I have made
some really neat scarves and shawls using the patterns in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Even Beginning Knitters Can Do It.......2004-07-09

This is an absolutely marvelous book, and not only for intermediate to advanced knitters as advertised. I learned to knit last Christmas and have already completed the sweater pictured in the upper left corner of the cover and, while it was a bit of a challenge, it came out beautifully. The individual sections in this book cover different techniques for applying beadwork to knitting - each with very clear, easy to read, detailed instructions. Also, those of you who already sew or embroider will find some patterns with basic knitting techniques with the beadwork sewn or embroidered onto the finished project. The projects range from simple to very challenging, from scarves to hats to sweaters, from minimal beading to complex bead designs. What fun!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Georgous book!.......2004-05-10

A must have! I'm a relatively new knitter (but daring and will try even an advanced pattern!) and this book is absolutely beautiful. I am considering putting down a current project just so I can try one of these patterns!

I prefer unique items and I love the idea of knitting with beads to add even more glitz! This book is one for you if you want to be different!

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Patterns are " nothing special" .......2006-06-01

the patterns are just "so so" looking. Don't waste money on this book. Just download similar pttns from the web.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!.......2005-08-15

Well, almost. I know how to knit and can do some basic things, but I was looking for a book to take me a little further on in my skills, but to date I haven't found the book that can do it. I was also looking for some things to decorate my home with, as always, and this book gave me that. The patterns are simple for the most part, easy to accomplish, and simply explained. I'm looking forward to doing several of the throws for my furniture. One of the things I wish authors wouldn't do so often is include baby items all the time. There are just too many books on the market already on knitting for baby, it's not needed in every book that comes out. The title is excellent for the book.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing "sophisticated" knitting book.......2005-07-31

I had very high hopes for this book after reading all of the good reviews, so maybe that's why I was so very disappointed in the patterns. It does have a couple of nice pillow designs. But for a book that claims to be for 'sophisticated' tastes, the wine wraps and purses are downright tacky. And the trivets, pot holders, welted baskets, and hanger cover are all straight from your grandma's knitting books. Then there's a host of projects that look good, but are really just very simple designs that use expensive yarns to make their statement. Replacing the yarns with less expensive versions (as I usually am forced to do) that have different textures and shading patterns would effectively ruin the look of the pattern since that look is almost entirely supplied by the yarn itself. Those patterns include most of the patterns for throws and adult's clothes. Also, the slippers 'for anyone' look like baby booties. If you're looking for a sophisticated slipper pattern, the argyle ones in Weekend Knitting are really great.

I kept the book because I want to make the bath set. Even that I don't think is really something special but I already bought bath salts & such for a gift basket so I'll toss in the knitted bath set as an accompaniment.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of its Type.......2004-06-18

The subtitle of this book, "quick-knit projects from beautiful, chunky yarns," describes quite a few books that are out right now. This is my favorite of the group.
The projects include many of the popular "hip knit" designs -- beaded wire napkin rings, wine bottle covers, cell-phone holders, felted bags, welted baskets, a chenille throw -- as well as classic sweater, afghan, scarf, hat, and cushion patterns. There is a wonderful bath set (I will never go back to store-bought washcloths) and a couple of beautiful piano bench cushion designs. You will also find the ubiquitous dorm boots and hanger cover pattern familiar from church bazaars. There are a few toys and kitchen things as well.
The mix of trendy and classic patterns and the wide variety of items means that this really could be your only knitting book. (Well, maybe combined with a good sweater pattern book). Many of the designs would make excellent gifts.
All the patterns are simple, as promised. I haven't found any errors yet, but most of the patterns consist of a couple of rows and then "repeat till piece measures X", so experienced knitters shouldn't have trouble adjusting. The photographs are sometimes so soft-focus and arty that the finished item is a bit of a surprise, but the things I have made have all been beautiful. There are many interesting suggestions for ways to adapt the patterns (the wire napkin rings, for example, might be made with hemp, or leather strips), and useful tips for working with particular materials. Finishing instructions are detailed and thorough.
There are beginning how-to-knit instructions with photographs, an abbreviations glossary, a good discussion of how to substitute yarns (as well as further suggestions with most projects), and clear explanations of all the finishing techniques required for the projects.

        4 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2004-06-06

This is a great book. I wouldn't recommend it for first-time knitters, but for those with a little more experience, it rocks. The yarns are a little on the expensive side, but they are so beautiful, and I would rather spend more money on a better yarn, especially for a pillow or throw that will probably be around for years to come. All the yarns in this book are chunky, so the projects knit up quickly (and who isn't short on time?).

I obviously did not read the description very well as I thought I'd be getting patterns of things to make, not just stitch samples. I think this book is more for a knitter who modifies existing patterns or who makes up their own designs.

5 out of 5 stars Take your knitting skills further..........2006-08-14

As all knitters know, knitting is reported to consist of only two stitches. But what do you do when you've got thoses two down pat? The book Beautiful Knitting Patterns offers over 250 ways to put your skills to better use. Each two page spread has four to six patterns shown in a color photo sample and a chart with instructions. The photos are excellent quality; the charts are easily read and the instructions are clear.

I recommend this for anyone who has already made a few scarves and is ready to try their hand at something more interesting than stockinette, rib or garter stitch. Hone your skills by making more interesting scarves or try your hand at a sampler afghan. For those who are already on to making sweaters, this book is a handy resource tailor made to be your muse.

One final note: Anyone looking for a gift for any knitter- look no further.

4 out of 5 stars unique patterns, exquisite photos... but awful symbols.......2006-02-07

I really love this book. When I bought it I already had a houseful of knitting books so I was surprised how much new and exciting there was in it. The photography is the best I've seen. I like the fonts and the layout of the book. I was particularly excited by the jacquard patterns. Elegant and sophisticated.

The symbol system used in this book is dreadful. If you buy this book just go to Kinkos and make copies of the symbol explanation page because you are going to need it. The stitch explanations are clear enough but you'll need that copy otherwise you'll be flipping back every row.

5 out of 5 stars Different stitch patterns.......2004-11-11

I love knitting stitch pattern books and can never have enough. This collection is one of my favorites because of the many unusual ones not in my other books. Quite unusual are the patchwork patterns in lace, patterns using beads knitted in, patterns knitted into the stitch below and openwork patterns. I also found the author's system of symbols rather annoying. Too bad she didn't use either the Burda or the Japanese system which are the main ones in usage today.

        5 out of 5 stars Fresh.......2004-07-05

I won't repeat the excellent detailed editorial reviews, but I'd like to add a couple of (hopefully) useful comments. One, the charts use different symbols than you may be used to (why does every author seem to use their own symbols??) and there are no line-by-line instructions. Two, the chapter introductions offer practical information on using the patterns.

There are a lot of patterns here I've never seen before and many of them are stunning or subtly beautiful. If you are a collector of stitch pattern books as I am, this is definitely one you will want to have and use! The best new one I've seen in a long time and well worth the price.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty but not helpful.......2007-03-26

The illustrations of techniques are super clear. But each item of clothing includes only one size (women's sweater: size small. What does that even mean?) And the dimensions on the diagrams are only in centimeters. So ok, I can pull out my tape measure and look on the back. But I have an intuitive sense of what a 34" bust looks like, and no clue what 40 cm means. The elegance is in the simple lines of the items and the basic but elegant wool used. Nothing frou-frou or easily dated here. But if you're not the size that the pattern is for, you've got a lot of work to figure out how to adapt the patterns.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful but disappointing.......2007-03-07

The first part of this book, like so many, includes some basic knitting instructions. The photography and the patterns are indeed beautiful. The downfall is that the patterns are not well done.
-Pictures often don't show the whole item - what does the bottom of that sweater look like?
-Pictures of finished items are not on models - sure it looks great nicely arranged but how does it look on a person?
-No measurements are given for sizes - what exactly is a size medium?
-Patterns are only given for one size (large for example) with no instructions on how to modify.

2 out of 5 stars Some good stuff but translated edition is beyond frustrating!.......2007-01-24

Lament: the recent trend in knitting books is a lot of "dumbing down" to insure that every newbie can knit something "funky" with record speed, with assurances that this is "Not Your Grandmother's Knitting". (Roll eyes.) It's a disservice to knitters new to the craft, many of whom value knitting's continuity with the past and the chance to challenge themselves.

...and then at the other extreme, a book like this, sure to frustrate all but the most experienced and independent knitter - and these would probably find the patterns here a bit *too* basic.

"Beautiful Knitting" is full of handy and useful info, from selvage techniques that would elevate the simplest garter stitch scarf, to mini-stitch pattern dictionaries and a handy appendix of the type you WISH every knitting book had, with thumbnail pics referencing the page where you can find this pattern or that stitch. Whatever difficulties with the English translation of this book, there's quite a bit of value in the non-pattern content.

However, quirkiness of translation and poor proof reading/editing for errata pretty much makes the patterns here worthless to the sub-expert knitter. Here's one that many would spot right away: In the baby blanket and booties pattern on pg. 60, the photo clearly shows a blanket with a garter border on all four sides, but the written directions clearly have you knit for one inch in garter at one end of the blanket, continue in straight stockinette until an inch from the end, then finish with garter. I guess non-newbies will tend to catch this alright, but I spot other errors in the patterns and don't even want to hesitate a guess to what I'm NOT noticing is amiss, as an advanced beginner.

Savvy pattern perusers in the U.S. already know that European patterns offer a little less hand-holding - directives like "reverse all shaping" as opposed to line-by-line instructions showing how to work that second sleeve. Still, it has always seemed to me that when a pattern is offered in just one size, it's discouraging and downright unfriendly to the average knitter, who may not have read every Interweave Knits or Knitty article on resizing a garment, or have a home library stocked with books on designing knitwear. We weren't all born with needles in our hands!

Another faux pas, at least to this knitter: There are lovely things shown in the book for which NO pattern is offered. For the aforementioned blanket/booties pattern, three different types of booties are shown (cuffed, cuffless, and felted), but instructions for only ONE is given. Pg. 82's toddler cardigan is photographed with a matching cap and adorable "elf toe" booties with fairisle inset - again, no pattern for these.

Finally, all the garments are shown laid flat on a surface, which gives the knitter little ability to judge how they might look on a human body. I know, other knitting books do this as well, but it's still a pet peeve.

This is a book possibly worth having if - like me - you are a obsessive about learning new or better ways to finesse the small details of garment finishing and so on. As for the patterns, I think my new rule is I'm only buying new knitting books from publishers who stand behind theirs with an online errata page. (These days, many do.) Too bad, because there's much to love here.

        5 out of 5 stars Buy it!!!.......2006-12-24

"Very disappointed" must be an "avid" but beginner knitter. This is one of the loveliest, most informative knitting books I have ever seen. For a change it is geared to the more advanced knitter rather than just being a rehash of baby designs. I own at least 300 knitting books and think this is one of the best. The patterns are beautiful and NEW and the instuctions are easy to follow. I just bought a brand new copy for less than $4.00. Grab one while you still can. Believe me if it weren't great I'd never have anything good to say about a French anything!!

        1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2006-12-19

I was eagerly anticipating this book, but was very disappointed. It is beautifully laid out, but the content leaves much to be desired. Evidently it was translated from the French and lost a lot in the translation.

The patterns are nothing to get excited about, the instructions are very difficult to follow -- in fact, they are downright confusing. In most cases only one size is given for a garnent rather than a range of sizes. There are lots of omissions in the translation that make interpreting the directions very frustrating.

There are some excellent suggestions in the book relating to techniques, but the remainder of the book leaves much to be desired.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Projects Within Reach.......2007-07-19

In The Elegant Knitter, Gina Macris takes techniques like felting and yarn-overs and makes them accessible in small projects. I'm not much of a knitter (rectangles a specialty), but the instructions and illustrations in this book made me feel as though I could take on something more complicated. The projects themselves are beautiful. The Spiral Scarf is my favorite, but I also love the Shibori scarf and the lacy scarf (which I am tempted to adapt to make a table runner). There are even projects for a knitter's best friend (the canine variety). While the emphasis on accessories may be unsatisfying for more practiced knitters, it was perfect for me. These are projects I could actually start and finish, without lugging a huge bag of yarn around for years. Overall an inspiring book!

1 out of 5 stars Nothing elegant about this one.......2007-05-07

I was extremely disappointed in this book -- there's nothing elegant or even particularly interesting in it. The patterns are the same old scarves and ... so boring, I don't remember it right after looking through it. Don't bother, even if you're a new knitter, unless you enjoy knitting bland, boring projects that you won't want to wear when you're done.

4 out of 5 stars Different ideas for hats, scarfs and gloves.......2007-04-12

Just received the book, but the patterns are different, and that is a good thing in Knitting books.

3 out of 5 stars Focusing on accessories.......2007-03-15

In The Elegant Knitter, Gina Macris has designed a collection of quick project. "But no matter where you go with your knitting, rest assured that the finish-line will never be very far from the starting point. Sometime life calls for a quick yarn fix. A little ball of softness calls and we can't wait an entire sweater's length of time to see the results. Hence this book."

Macris has focused on accessories in this book: scarves (Macris' favorite accessory), hats, mittens, gloves, bags and even two sweaters for your favorite pooch. To each pattern she adds her special flair--an interesting stitch pattern, a unique detail or a luxurious ribbon--to enhance the elegance of the project.

The first part of the volume includes the technique information required for the project in The Elegant Knitter. In addition to the basics, Macris covers cabling, felting, short row and Fair Isle techniques, as well as color and yarn theory and selecting appropriate embellishments.

Many of the projects in The Elegant Knitter are suitable for beginning or novice knitters, with a few intermediate projects providing knitters something to which they can aspire. All the projects are small enough to be easily portable and since the yarn requirements are minimal, luxury fibers could be selected for a truly exceptional piece. The most unusual project is the Shibori Scarf. Knit as a simple rectangle in alpaca, glass pebbles are wrapped into the fabric prior to felting, creating a unique, three-dimensional look.

Armchair Interviews says: Elegant and simple.
