    Book Description

The Reverend Howard Finster was twenty feet tall, suspended in darkness. Or so he appeared in the documentary film that introduced a teenaged Greg Bottoms to the renowned outsider artist whose death would help inspire him, fourteen years later, to travel the country. Beginning in Georgia with a trip to Finster’s famous Paradise Gardens, his journey—of which The Colorful Apocalypse is a masterly chronicle—is an unparalleled look into the lives and visionary works of some of Finster’s contemporaries: the self-taught evangelical artists whose beliefs and oeuvres occupy the gray area between madness and Christian ecstasy.

With his prodigious gift for conversation and quietly observant storytelling, Bottoms draws us into the worlds of such figures as William Thomas Thompson, a handicapped ex-millionaire who painted a 300-foot version of the book of Revelation; Norbert Kox, an ex-member of the Outlaws biker gang who now lives as a recluse in rural Wisconsin and paints apocalyptic visual parables; and Myrtice West, who began painting to express the revelatory visions she had after her daughter was brutally murdered. These artists’ works are as wildly varied as their life stories, but without sensationalizing or patronizing them, Bottoms—one of today’s finest young writers—gets at the heart of what they have in common: the struggle to make sense, through art, of their difficult personal histories.

In doing so, he weaves a true narrative as powerful as the art of its subjects, a work that is at once an enthralling travelogue, a series of revealing biographical portraits, and a profound meditation on the chaos of despair and the ways in which creativity can help order our lives.

This book is a must read for ANY quilter, whether working with regular or miniature pieces. Thanks to Ms. Collins for sharing all these terrific ideas.

5 out of 5 stars should be re-issued.......2005-07-12

this is a wonderful book for a quilter of any level of skill or experience.

i have no plans (right now!) to work at the scale the author enjoys, and i do not intend to enter any comptetitions, but i still want to do the best work i can. just one quick reading has improved my technique. thanks to ms. collins, i am more aware of how i am cutting, piecing and sewing, and more aware of what the machine is doing, can do, or will do. some of what she writes about i knew, some i never considered, some advice i've seen in other publications, but having all of this information in one source reinforces the lessons.

even if you have other technique or block books on your shelf, you will benefit from this one. as other reviewers have mentioned, ms. collins accepts the time and attention that good craftmanship requires, and encourages her readers to put that time and attention into their work.

5 out of 5 stars This is definitely one to add to your collection.......2001-07-11

Sally Collins has outdone herself with this book. In our modern day society, there is an emphasis on speed - everyone rushes around trying to squeeze in as many activities and projects into each minute of every day. This sometimes has the unfortunate consequence of less attention to detail and the result is sloppiness. In this book, Sally shows the quilter how to slow down and enjoy the process of creating each quilt block.

She starts her book with a chapter on Philosophy and Creativity and her deep love for quilting is very evident in the words that she uses. Phrases such as "..take pleasure in the journey", "..experience the joy and bliss that quiltmaking gives each of us". She views errors as "gifts...opportunities for success" and says that "problem solving is a real key to finding the joy in quiltmaking". With these statements, she removes the fear of making mistakes and turns errors into learning opportunities. She states that quality workmanship is not just about perfect sewing, but also knowing how to solve problems as they occur. One would be tempted to skip this introduction and jump right into the technique and block sections - this is a mistake. It may sound a bit corny, but after reading these pages, I was inspired at the prospect of making miniature blocks rather than being intimidated as I know most quilters are by the tiny pieces used in small scale blocks.

She follows the introduction with a detailed section on tools and explains what they are used for which is very helpful. A chapter on Color and Fabric is next and she does a wonderful job explaining the importance of color and fabric selection in general and also how to select appropriate fabrics for small scale blocks. There are a number of helpful example images that accompany the text. As we progress further into the book, we begin to learn about designing blocks and drafting. She goes into detail on how to draft blocks from beginning to end, a discussion that I found fascinating. Sprinkled throughout this chapter and each of the ones that follow, there are tip boxes titled "Noteworthy" that are filled with valuable information.

For the quilter interested in improving their accuracy in assembling blocks, the chapter entitled "Workmanship" is without question, the most valuable one to read - and should be read through several times to reinforce key concepts. Sally discusses various factors that cause problems from cutting to sewing to pressing. The bottom line is that the quilter needs to pay careful and close attention to each step of the process. Her quilting experience is evident in the tips on pinning, blocking, and measuring that she includes.

The last chapter before starting the block section deals with various construction techniques, such as assembling half square triangles, English Paper Piecing, and using bias bars. But, she does not stop there - she ends the chapter with a detailed and well illustrated tutorial on matching seams, a very important factor in sewing quilt blocks and one that is rarely addressed in instructional quilting books.

The Block Collection consists of forty-nine blocks with familiar names such as Churn Dash, Dresden Plate, or Bear's Paw and six of the blocks are her own designs. Each block is accompanied by a color photograph and includes template outlines and color coded measurements for three, four, and six inch blocks. She always includes a tip or two appropriate to the block, perhaps about construction or color selection. Each of these blocks is used in her quilt that she discusses in the last chapter. I was fortunate to see this quilt at a show and can vouch for its beauty and attention to detail. I spent several minutes looking at various blocks and marvelling at how well she put it together. If you are interested in making a similar one for yourself, she includes the instructions for the quilt along with fabric requirements.

She concludes the book with more eye candy in the form of a Gallery of full color photographs of quilts that she has made using the blocks in the book to whet the appetite of the reader. An alphabetic index and a brief biography of the author can be found on the final pages of the book.

It is well worth taking the time to read the book from cover to cover before embarking on the blocks. The instructions are clear and concise and well presented from a visual standpoint. This is definitely one to add to the collection!

      Book Description

The full story of one of the greatest and most colorful coaches in the history of college basketball, told here for the first time. From the playgrounds of Rockaway, to the NCAA championship, to the broadcast booth, there has been only one Al McGuire. This is his story, as quick-paced and fascinating as the coach himself.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating subject slowly delivered.......2000-04-12

I love basketball and always thought Al was a great guy. While I looked forward to this book and am glad I read it, I cannot recommend it. Al is an interesting funny guy but that doesn't come out in the book. The book reads clinically without the emotion of Al McGuire felt through the writer. I did enjoy hearing of his early life but it was too long. Same for Belmont Abbey. Along the way you do learn interesting facts like he had a losing record when hired at Marquette. But, generally, as much as I liked the subject, the book did not live up.

      PERSONAL MCGUIRE STORY.

I was at the Memphis State game described on Page 229 where with 45 seconds left and up by 5, an MSU player stepped in the foul lane losing the Tigers a one and one and probably the game. Yes, Al left the court with both hands raised. Raised in what he later called the "Irish salute", middle finger extended. Al had incited the crowd, touched us with his enthusiasm. When he came later to call some Keith Lee games, he fondly remembered the game and how he left the field. This is the "Al" the country knew and loved.

      2 out of 5 stars Missing.......2000-01-29

Mr. Moran does an excellent job of recapping the Al McGuire era at Marquette University. He also tracks the career of Coach Al especially well. The book was a labor of love, but the author should have more closely looked at the "whole" Al McGuire. That's why the book is, at best, average.

What's missing is a sense of color brought on by perspective; the deep-down interpretations that the passage of time permits. As a long-time follower of Marquette basketball -- and a Marquette J-school grad to boot -- I believe too much of the book was newsy. Mr. Moran recanted stories that were well-known and well-publicized. Case in point: the oft-repeated Delsman fight.

What would have been interesting was to probe deeply the fundamental emotions that brought together some of the best college basketball talent and Al McGuire. What emotions were running through Jim Chones' psyche as he rejected UCLA and others for McGuire and MU? Or, why in succession, did Larry McNeill, Maurice Lucas and Bo Ellis all choose Marquette. What did their heart say? What was so special about this man that his players would attend college at Concrete University (despite McGuire's pleadings that Marquette had "green grass")with virtually no other African-American students.

The ballplayers had a profound impact on Marquette's outlook toward relationships among African-American and caucasian students. Mr. Moran documents this seldom discussed element of life at MU well. He effectively illustrates the Jesuit-Catholic response to one of the most basic precepts of the Christian church.

On the basketball side, Al lost as much talent to the NBA as he recruited in the early 1970s. Certainly the arguable loss of at least one and possibly two or more national championships weighed heavily on his psyche. We know from the author that Al wanted his players to make money -- but could have they made more by staying in school? The author glosses over these emotional and practical issues. It would have been nice to know what happened when the NBA called for Jim Chones. The look on McGuire's face, the visceral emotion that was overcome by logic and compassion.

As baketball's flower child, McGuire's views about casual drug use would have been interesting. Especially given that marijuana use on campus was common at the time and one star player was arrested for marijuana possession in the championship year.

Finally, there was very little discussion of what has since happened to Al's players. The author glosses over this point. The success of any college professor -- including a coach -- is the measurement of his impact on the post college career of his players. That's not just the NBA. It's what they did with their education and their lives.

What would have made this book special was to make it an oral history. Let then author narrate and then, rather than quote witnesses and Al, let people tell their Al stories in their own words.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recap of the life and career of a true character.......1999-11-21

The book is must reading for those of us who only remotely knew of the specifics of the Coach. It provides wonderful insight into a great leader, who never gave up his individuality, and certainly has made a permanent place for himself in college basketball. The author did an excellent job of research and provides a throughly researched journey into Al's life. Congratulations, Declan. I look forward to your next venture. It is good to see success coming from St. Pascal's

4 out of 5 stars moran writes as if he were there.......1999-06-06

i was there. i'm the guy in the broom closet, and just to add to the penurious legend i went to his medalist office to offer to pay for the ticket and he grabbed the money so fast i got blisters. i know everyone mentioned in the milwaukee half of the book and the author hits it pretty much on the head. very few glitches. a wonderful stroll down memory lane. must reading for all "warrior" fans and al watchers. thanks moran and thanks al. lefty

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and entertaining tales from Coach Al's life........1999-06-04

This well written book about Al McGuire traces his life's ups and downs from New York to Milwaukee. It provides fascinating insights into the unique character of Coach Al, and recounts many of his most legendary moments as a coach, and as a man. I especially enjoyed the behind-the-scenes tales as told by many of Al's closest friends, former players and aquaintances. This book also provides insight into the evolution of modern prime-time college basketball and recalls in wonderful detail the days when Marquette wore "bumblebee" striped uniforms (which were later banned) and the NIT was king. I rate this book Five Stars for any fan of zen or college hoops. Or to use a McGuireism; this book is seashells and balloons! Greg W. Honolulu, Hawaii

5 out of 5 stars -----Kaffe Fassett has a wonderful perception of COLOR-----.......2007-05-28

In A COLOURFUL JOURNEY, K. Fassett had nine designers, including himself create over twenty patchwork quilts. The fabrics used in the quilts are from the Kaffe Fassett Fabric Collection. That collection of fabrics is shown in the back of the book so that the reader can locate the name or Id number of the individual patterns.

The quilts in the book are indeed a vivid variety of colors. In looking over the offerings of the quilt artists, I had several favorites. Kaffe Fassett designed quite a few and from his collection I liked Handkerchief Corner Pastel which is an updated handkerchief quilt. Mosaic Columns that has a chintz look and Jubilee Gardens is like a Tiffany lamp with many small pieces. Pete and Paul's quilt by Roberta Horton has a stylish elegance. The Strippy Chevrons quilt by Susan Druding gave me a happy feeling with its cheerful colors as did the quilt made by Sally R. Davis which she called Co-Ordinated Chaos Quilt. The instructions for making the quilts are included in the book. Most of the quilts were photographed at an 1860 house in Hastings, England which gave a nice backdrop to the images.

This book also contains a short article that profiles the friendship between Anna Williams and Katherine Watts. Katherine has even written a book about Anna and her wonderful quilts that have helped to inspire a new interest in quilting

Fassett has produced some wonderful books and I've enjoyed several. My favorite is WELCOME HOME: KAFFE FASSETT because it seems to be the most personal of his books. Other books not to be missed are: GLORIOUS PATCHWORK and PASSIONATE PATCHWORK.

It wasn't quite what I expected. There was a lot of personal reflection and was more biographical in nature. However, the main idea of getting over the past and forgiving the hurts to get on with your Christian life was supported well.

Fly high with mazes dedicated to the Wright Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, and the astronauts on the Apollo 11 who went to the moon. Children will feel proud to say they were there at every a-maze-ing moment.

        1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-07-13

I thought I was buying a puzzlebook. I did not read the title correctly. This would be fine as a freebie online, but for $8.00 it is a rip off.

          Book Description

Tremendous treasure can be yours if you can overcome the obstacles laid by the late, great Baron Von Maze. Many centuries ago, the Baron hid a wealth of valuables in his castle and protected it with traps and barriers. Knowing that someday a worthy individual would come along to claim the treasure, he recorded his secrets in a journal. Finding this important document is the first step on your treasure hunt. Once you find it, your adventure continues with 26 other formidable mazes, all in spectacular full color. Weapons, boulders, vicious alligators, rats, deadly trapdoors, and broken floors are just some of the things you'll need to get past to succeed. Illustrated with intricate detail, these carefully constructed mazes, many of which require the solution of additional puzzles or clues, will challenge even veteran adventurers. For those who want to be sure to claim the treasure, solutions are included.

            Book Description

From the elephants of Africa to the penguins of Antarctica, children will delight in this colorful, maze-filled journey around the world. The wild trip is courtesy of Roger Moreau, creator of the popular Dinosaur Escape Mazes (60,000 copies sold) and Wizard Magic Mazes (70,000 copies). Start the safari in Nairobi, where-- if you can find your way climbing up vines, running over rough trails, and crossing rivers -- dozens of creatures will greet you, including an endangered Black Rhino. From there, head to Asia and search for a clear path through the bamboo to reach the pandas. Then, it's on to South and North America, and finally to the Arctic where polar bears play and solvers have to go slip-sliding safely across blocks of ice.
