Customer Reviews:
Just what I needed!.......2007-10-06
I have started sewing again, and with great confidence I started and found in the 1st piece I got stuck, I thought the ties where interfacing on the waist line of a little dress for one of my granddaughters that I was making. As soon as I opened this book I new what it was and where it went. This book was just what I needed to get back to sewing and enjoying life, it has everything I need to know and is very discriptive. I am so glad I purchased this book, (The Complete Book of Sewing) I am also glad I read the reviews before I purchased it. Jan Craig, Pensacola, FL.
Great Book .......2007-10-05
This book helped me so much. It's been years since I have sewn and many helpful hints were needed and provided with this book. Highly recommended.
Great help........2007-08-10
This book was a great help and will be a good reference book. I had sewed years ago and wanted to start back up but realized how much I had forgotten. This book helped so much. I am very pleased with this title and it was exactly what I needed.
Good for the basics and photo content, but "Vogue Sewing" is more extensive.......2007-06-26
If you're looking for a basic beginner's sewing book that will ease you into the world of sewing, this is a GREAT place to start. The heavy photo content is utilized wisely to show you what a given process should look like from start to finish, as well as show you the differences between a variety of fabrics, even if the descriptions of fiber content aren't always as accurate or all-encompassing as they could be (for example, not all charmeuses are made from silk nowadays - that's not even mentioned in the small amount of text found under the fabric swatch's photo - and often the average chain sewing store will only carry non-natural fiber versions).
This IS a great book to use to get your feet wet with sewing, but I just didn't find it to be as extensive as I was hoping it was, and I used the Amazon reviews to help me determine which sewing book to start with. The book that's completely blown me away with its vast wealth of knowledge is Vogue Sewing: Revised and Updated (Vogue Knitting Magazine). When I told my mom that I had decided to pick up Vogue Sewing as well, to cut down on my hollering-for-sewing-help phone calls to her, she couldn't say enough about how wonderful and extensive "Vogue Sewing" is. Mom even had "Vogue Sewing" in constant rotation as a recommended text for her Advanced sewing (high school) classes. When it comes to sewing (and everything else) my mom ROCKS! She knows her stuff backwards and forwards, so if she tells me that this is a great book to sew from, I believe her. And my brief perusal of "Vogue Sewing" only served to confirm for me just how great a sewing resource it's going to prove to be!
So, long story short, if you want a book that will show you, in a way that's easy to understand, how what you're doing should look as you're doing it, this is the book to get. If you want something that will require a little more effort to figure out, but will help you to grow as a seamstress or tailor, go for Vogue Sewing: Revised and Updated (Vogue Knitting Magazine). Or, do what I did, and buy 'em both!
very handy.......2007-06-08
a very good reference book. detailed explanations to support memory lacks or skipped classes...!
I love it and i feel confortable with it near to my table in all my new sewing adventures.
you will not regret to have chosen it

This book has been wonderful for my 14 yr. old daughter. She learned to sew with the Sew Fast Sew Easy book and moved into this book. Now she's reconstructing all sorts of crazy stuff. It's a fun and creative outlet for my kid. I'm happy she has picked up a positive hobby.

I bought the Sew Fast Sew Easy book for my girlfriend and she's been making all sorts of stuff. On the company website they have online classes. She took the men's underwear class and now I'll never run out of briefs. She also did the lacy tanga panty video for herself. Thank you Sew Fast Sew Easy! So I got her this book to move onto. I hit a home run with it. She now watches project runway with a new appreciation.

I love this book. I'm totally stoked on the projects I've created with it. I've learned a lot from this book unlike another boring sewing book my mom gave me, "Sewing for dummies". This is a rad beginner book as well as alterations and fittings. Any level of sewing should be able to get something from it. I also think the Sew Fast Sew Easy book is a great book to have first.

I got the Sew Fast Sew Easy book and loved it so I bought this book also. It was cheaper than some of the others and well worth it. I had a really good time doing the projects in this book and learned some more on tailoring and heming. This would be a great gift for anyone who likes to get creative and mess around.

So I bought this book for my girlfriend who wanted to learn to sew after becoming obsessed with project runway. After receiving the book I did a little research on the company. They offer sewing classes to the public in New York City and have been for the past 15 years. I found that they had online video classes and my girlfriend took the men's underwear video. She wont stop making me briefs and I love it. She also made some lacy tanga panties for herself from another one of their videos. Thank you Sew fast Sew easy!!

This book is radical. My mom got me a couple sewing books. This is by far my fav. The other she got me, "sewing for dummies" was boring and didn't include patterns to work on. This book taught me a lot and I moved on to the Rip It! book which I also love. Do the skirt pattern and add a belt, it's so hot right now. I love wearing the clothes I've made to school. You won't be dissapointed

This might be the only book on doll clothes you'll ever need........2007-03-13
Before buying this book, I would buy patterns for doll clothes. Sometimes I bought patterns from big companies like Simplicity and sometimes I bought patterns from small outfits. Of course, they were very specific patterns for only a few outfits for only a few limited dolls. Ms. Dodge's book is like owning every pattern for every doll ever created! She provides many basic pattern pieces in a variety of sizes. It will be up to you, however, to design your doll's outfit. Don't worry--the book will show you how! You will also make your own custom pattern pieces in order to get the right fit. This book covers baby dolls, girl dolls and even boy dolls. The only doll that is not represented is the womanly-figured modern fashion doll, but once you have mastered what is covered in this book, you will be able to dress those dolls too. The author provides lots of good, detailed photos and beautiful line drawings of possible outfits to inspire you. My confidence in dressing dolls has increased a hundred-fold. Now I know that if I can dream it, I can achieve it. And you can too!
Detailed, clear and complete.......2007-01-04
Detailed patterns, clear explanations and completed with the needed illustrations. Also some tips to modify the lengths of the patterns or to adapt the suggested model in order to create other dresses. Well done.
I was looking since a while for these kind of books till I discovered the Amazon.com and his large choice of books related to 'Dolls' dresses and furniture and am very satisfied about the quality of their service and deliveries.
Best doll clothes' pattern book ever?.......2005-09-18
Excellent book with beautiful pictures. Leaves plenty of room to your own creativity. Desciptions are straightforward. It's hard for me to say if it would be good for beginners, since I'm trained in dressmaking and patternmaking, but it seems easy to figure out. I can't think of any book I'd rather use when making doll clothes - it has everything.
User Friendly Instructions.......2005-09-17
Book offers a wide range of details and styles that are described in an easy to follow format. Patterns are not difficult and user friendly.
The Dolls DressMaker by Venus A. Doge.......2004-02-05
The Dolls Dressmaker Book is the most complete pattern book I have ever found. It includes everything one could want to dress their doll. Clothes, underwear, accessories, hats, shoes. Excellent instruction information on assembly, mix-n-match pieces. Great rcommendations of trims, laces, etc. All full size patterns grouped by size, easy access in back of book.
I Very Highly recommend.

Book Description
The Big Book of Boat Canvas is a thorough revision and updating of Karen Lipe's two popular earlier books, Boat Canvas Cover to Cover and More Boat Canvas, combined with a whole new section on below-decks sewing projects. In this latest volume Lipe ranges well beyond the boundaries of traditional canvas work to create a comprehensive guide to fabric work on board. You'll find dozens of traditional canvas projects--sail covers, awnings, duffel bags, dodgers, and Biminis, wind chutes, winter covers--all with clear, step-by-step instructions, generously illustrated. You'll also find dozens of not-so-traditional fabric projects to add comfort and a touch of elegance to your below-decks spaces: custom interior cushions, fitted sheets and daycovers, privacy curtains, lee cloths, even a tablecloth to fit your varnished table. Lipe offers a veritable minicourse in interior yacht decoration, dozens of useful sewing tips, a careful detailing of materials nad tools needed for each project, and an extensive discussion of modern fabrics appropriate for exterior and interior use. In short, this handy book covers everything you need to know to sew comfort, utility, and style into your boat.
"A treasure of functional and fanciful projects you can sew yourself."--Multihulls
"You'll find this book of the utmost practical help."--The Ensign
It passed what is for me the acid test of a how-to book: The Big Book of Boat Canvas made me want to get at some long-neglected projects and even to try some that I never thought I could manage."--SAIL
Customer Reviews:
No Help.......2007-06-23
I bought this book because I need to make a bimini top for the used boat I just purchased. (The old canvas is gone.) Unfortunately, this book's instruction on how to make a bimini top boils down to: "It's hard to make bimini tops, so you should use your old one to make a pattern for the new one." No help whatsoever if you don't have an old one! Buyer beware.
Not what you think.......2007-05-01
I was pretty disappointed by this book. Anything with "Big Book" in the title should be very comprehensive, instead this is an out of date, amateur attempt that has somehow lasted all these years, probably the title.
If you need a serious technical book on how to layout canvas detailing the complex process required to ensure a professional quality result, this is not the right book. If you want to build canvas duffel bags and other meaningless items, then maybe.
Big Disappointment.......2006-06-09
What a disappointment! This is not a book about boat canvas, this is a book about sewing arts and crafts in canvas on a boat. Projects include "A simple duffel bag", a "Life Jacket Bag", a "Bicycle Bag"; and under "Interior" are projects like "Sheets and Quilts" and "Curtains". There is some discussion of exterior boat canvas, but the information is cursory and focused on sailboats. If you want to increase your knowledge of boat canvas before laying down a few thousand dollars to have new canvas made for your boat, this book will not help you.
A Big Disappointment!.......2004-04-10
Just another book of projects with very little detail. If you are looking for a book that explains the hows and whys of sewing boat canvas, this is not it.
At least I bought it used.
Good starter book.......2002-01-01
This is an excellent book for the aspiring canvasworker. Covers everything from the basics of tools and materials to step by step directions for projects of all sorts. You can save a fortune by doing canvas work for yourself, and this is a great way to get started.

Not for embroidery machines!.......2005-04-01
Caution - this book is NOT what it may appear to be! It was written almost 20 years ago, and deals with using a SEWING machine and a variety of zig-zag stitching to achieve embroidery-type results. It is NOT about using embroidery machines. As an embroidery machine enthusiast, it was of little value to me.
An essential part of any sewers library.......1999-09-12
As always, Ms. Fanning specialises in the head slapper in this book. Every time I go back through it I feel like an idiot for not having thought of some of the simple and (once pointed out) obvious techniques she describes. Whatever sort of embellishment you are planning, chances are there is something in this book to make the process easier and more effective. And when you are not sewing, the book is fun to read! Her explanations are clear and easy to envision. I have never actually made one of the projects in the book, but have used the techniques on countless projects. She even says that's fine with her! A truly useful book brimming with GOOD ideas.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!!.......2005-10-31
I wonder why such a great book is given bad reviews.
This book is a book of comparisons of all sewing methods possible for a single technique. It shows you the normal way and also how the professionals do without criticizing 'one is better than the other'. Which technique works for me might not work for somebody else. It is a matter of personal preference and way of sewing and also, the skill level.
If you are looking for a step by step beginner book, then go for New Complete Guide to Sewing by Reader's Digest. It is excellent and very comprehensive. But if you are looking for the different methods to do a collar or zippers or any other technique, to figure out what works for you, then THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!
Should be called comprehensive guide to quality sewing methods.......2005-10-16
I think the title of this book was not well chosen, but the information within definitely was. I am an experienced old school dressmaker, and have read many sewing books. This book goes far beyond most others in giving a wealth of information on creating a quality sewn product. The emphasis is on garment sewing, but the methods in the book can be applied to other kinds of sewing as well. The author divides the book into sections on different aspects of sewing, such as seam finishes, buttonholes, linings, etc. and then includes many different options for accomplishing a specific sewing task. Each is briefly and (for the most part) clearly explained. The book doesn't have a lot of eye appeal, as it is not on glossy paper and has no photographs. However, the simple line drawings do the job, and the text is concise and to the point. Readers who are looking for a guide to sewing with a serger will find little information here, but those who want to learn how to use a regular machine to its greatest potential have come to the right place.
The thing I like best about this book is that the author doesn't lay down rigid rules. Sewing is an art, not a science, so there is plenty of scope for independent thinking. The book shows that there is always more than one way of accomplishing a task, and gives the pros and cons of each method. Readers can try them out and decide which approach makes the most sense in their own situation. The book will give anyone who sews, or who would like to learn, the information they need to customize their sewing for a quality result.
The Complete Book Of Sewing Short Cuts by Claire Schaeffer.......2005-09-01
I bought this book in hardcover at a Bargain rate just because I have been so plesed with purchases of her other more recently published books. I found it to be very informative. Methods are not always a very quick technique, but all are very good and sometimes a good technique is the quickest way to a desirable outcome. I taught Sewing in Home Economics classes for a number of years and this would have been a very good book to have had available for students of all levels. I would reccomend it as well as her other great books.
Misleading title, but a good book nonetheless.......2004-08-24
You can tell that this was one of Ms. Schaeffer's early efforts; it doesn't have the writing panache of her recent books, and it is not lavishly photographed (the illustrations are all black-and-white drawings reminiscent of pattern guidesheet pictures). It is also not a book of "sewing shortcuts", if I had to guess I'd wager that her publisher or someone else railroaded her into naming it that. There's a word or two about how pullover dresses are easier to make than those with zippers or buttons (duh), and the some good, quick cutting advice but shortcuts it is not. The back jacket information is also heartily misleading on that score. What the book IS, though, is a good, basic-to-advanced, every-technique-listed guide to sewing methods. Want to know what kind of seam finish you need for a particular fabric or effect? She'll tell you. Some facing ideas? Ways to duplicate the appearence of designer or ready-to-wear finishes? Fastening methods? In there too. This book is MUCH more thorough (and much more clipped and concise in style) than either her "Couture Sewing" or "High Fashion Sewing Secrets". I got my copy used, for a complete bargain, especially considering how useful it is. I'd rather have a library of material within one book on my sewing shelf than many pretty books I don't use. Sure, the book is more than 20 years old, but basic machine techniques and hand sewing don't change (especially for those of us who can't afford fancy machines).
I've given it four stars, since the title and the content have little relation to one another. I'd give it five stars for just the content, though. I took the book out of the public library before I bought it, so I knew what I was getting into. Had I purchased it on the title alone, I might have been disappointed.
Not such a good book.......2004-04-29
I guess back in 1981 this book was a good reference, but sewing has changed. This book addresses none of this new stuff. First, there are fancy new notions now that make sewing faster and easier. Second, sergers are now in the home market. And lastly, color photos (although they existed then) are now in MOST good sewing books and readily available. This book is outdated and I am sorry I bought it. (Thank goodness used for only a few bucks. You get what you pay for.)
The author's techniques are not shortcuts, but are the standard in sewing techniques. Nothing new here. The book is filled with illustrations, although most sewing techniques described do not have an accompanying drawing.
Get a better book (or books) like the Easy Guide sewing series instead.

Book Description
Her books have sold over 100,000 copies in the United States and her seminars across the country are always sold out. She's the world's foremost authority on window treatments, and her name is Caroline Wrey. The New York Times wrote, To Lady Caroline, diamonds are not a girl's best friend, but table clamps, Velcro, and a staple gun are.
Combining her skill as an accomplished seamstress, an artistic eye that takes a dim view of boring curtains, and her experience as a teacher, The Complete Book of Curtains and Drapes is the definitive book on the creation of this most vital element of interior design, inspiring both beginners and experts to create luxurious living environments.
Customer Reviews:
Add Style to Your Windows!.......2006-04-07
This covers all the details of measuring the window and deciding on style, fabric, etc. Learn to make standard drapes, swags, Austrian and Roman blinds, tie-backs and rosettes to dress your windows. The big color photos show lush room setting with handsome curtains.
I used the book mostly to look at styles and fabrics, but for a sewer, this book has all the how-to you could want.
