5 out of 5 stars Great as reference or tutorial.......2007-10-04

I don't buy many woodworking books because most, especially the ones sold by home centers, aren't very good. They lack detail, they're incomplete, and I often get the feeling that they're just cranked out without much thought. But this one caught my eye in a local bookstore and I'm glad I bought it.

First of all, the book can be used either as a reference or as a complete primer on woodworking. There's lots of information there, but not so much that you get bogged down. At first I just used it to brush up on specific topics, and then I went back to the first page and started reading it straight through. It's well-written; words are used well and not wasted. Photography is superb. Despite the reference to generic "Furniture" in the title, the book is heavily oriented toward cabinets, which it covers in great detail, even to the point of describing how to construct multi-light glass doors.

The first few pages are a little off-putting as the author describes what he considers an appropriate collection of tools and a space to put them in; unfortunately, many woodworking books assume that the reader has acres of space in which to set up a shop. As you read on, though, the text is more friendly toward the hobbyist.

In short, this is a great woodworking reference or tutorial. Don't be put off by the beginning of the book; it gets better. And the Amazon price for this book is much lower than the $40 I paid in the bookstore.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-09-24

I found this book very disappointing. The pictures were very pretty but that is pretty much it. The illustrations were confusing and of little use. It gives too much of an overview and no real specifics. I found woodworking for dummies to be a much better book for the beginning woodworker.

5 out of 5 stars The benchmark book on furniture making.......2007-08-05

It is well known that woodworkers have different styles. I think Andy Ray's style will work for majority people trying to learn woodworking. His writing is clear, and he also presents thoughts in logical way. Thus, the book precisely explain why he does this way but not another.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Beginners.......2007-07-05

I purchased this book because I had the interest to learn more about furniture design and building technique. It's very well written, easy to understand and the quality photos help visualize the instructions of the author. It's a great resource to beginners because of the structure of the book. It starts with basic tools and their use, workshop design, and then moves on to basic wood explanations and building techniques. It also gives you ideas on additional readings if you'd like to research a topic in more detail. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested woodworking by making it a part of your home library.

5 out of 5 stars Great literature for a novice or tradesman.......2007-05-25

This book has plenty to offer anyone. A lot of it was review for me, but it is always good to make sure you don't forget the basics as you move forward in carpentry - it's like trying to attempt calculus without algebra.
I have read this from cover to cover and feel I could read it again to pick up on the little things I missed. It is indeed as it's titled, the "complete" guide. I will say that some basic knowledge will be instrumental for fully grasping and understanding this book, but for the most part, explinations are clear, concise, and simple. There are a few charts in this book that make it very handy and also some very good pointers - some of it is very helpful, but doesnt' seem to be able to adhere to any of my brain cells, so this is one book I like to have close to my shop.
Overall, I'm pleased with this book, and can't wait to read Taunton Press' Complete Illustrated Guide to Joinery, which is referred to in this book from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars The new referrence guide to the works of The Tiffany Studios.......2007-05-07

With the advent of Duncan's new book 'Tiffany Lamps and Metalware' we have a NEW referrence guide that will surely replace 'Tiffany At Auction', also by Duncan. This will take place for two reasons - first - the cost of 'Tiffany At Auction' has become, like the lamps themselves, out of the reach of many prospective buyers and students of the Art Nouveau movement in America. Second - the new volume offers far more pieces to see so that those just getting into the collecting or the study of 'Tiffany' will be able to have a greater number of examples - both common and rare - that the individual may not have seen prior to this publication. A wonderful effort on the part of Mr. Duncan. And, at an affordable price!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Reference on Tiffany Lamps.......2007-04-06

This book is a stunning follow-up to Mr. Duncan's incredible "Louis C. Tiffany, The Garden Museum Collection". As a 30 year collector and enthusiast of the works of Tiffany I can confidently state that this volume will become an essential reference guide to any collector in this field and dramatically expands upon his "Tiffany at Auction" which was published over 25 years ago and is a highly sought after collector's item. The world of Tiffany collectors owes Mr. Duncan a huge debt for bringing us a seemingly endless series of spectacular books on this subject.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING !.......2006-05-15

An outstanding book for a beginner or more experienced woodworker. I am truly impressed. I am a fairly experienced woodworker. I own many books on the subject. Glen Huey has produced a very fine book on period furniture.
Another very excellent book is Lonnie Bird's: "Period Furniture Details" I would reccomend buying both books.
This book is more step by step and informative than many. There are five main projects:1.block front chest 2.Massachusetts high chest{high boy}3.Pennsylvania chest on chest 4.Pennsylvania tall case clock 5.New England desk and bookcase{secretary} All projects are thorougly covered with step by step construction instructions. The book is easy to use in the shop with its spiral binding. There is an accompanying D.V.D That is by itself worth the price of the book! Every project has full cut lists and sources for specialty hardware. The D.V.D {82 minutes} has detailed demonstrations on: making cabriole legs, stickered miters, dye finishing, ogee feet and more. There are printable full size patterns for all curved or special parts for all projects on the D.V.D. [One negative the book like many is printed in China and in my opinion the picture and printing are not as good as many others] If you want to build one of these period pieces this is the book for you,you can do it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book for advanced hobbyist woodworker.......2006-08-10

Definitely NOT for the beginning woodworker. This book does not give measured drawings or instructions on how to make pieces of furniture. It has a section which gives drawings of a large number of woodworking joints, BUT does not discuss how to make them. This part of the book has been done in many other books along with "how to" information. Thus, this part of the book could have been eliminated without losing any real value.

HOWEVER, the rest of the book is worth its weight in gold!!!! It takes virtually all types of "Case furniture" (cabinets, chests, tables, desks, etc) but not chairs, and it gives well-researched, thorough, easy to understand diagrams on how they were constructed -- that is, what types of joints were used throughout the piece. It also provides excellent references to more detailed sets of plans and descriptions of each piece. The beginning woodworker won't know what to do with this book. The professional furniture maker will not need the book, but the vast number of serious weekend warriors of woodworking will find this book to be invaluable.

The potential purchaser of this book should realize that it was published twice, under the same name. Rodale published it in 1998. Readers Digest published it in 2003. Today I examined both editions side-by-side. Except for their ISBN numbers, the two editions seem identical. I examined a number of pages side by side, and I could not find any differences. They have the same number of pages. The only differences I could detect were in the paper used. The original Rodale edition has a more glossy paper, and the print seems to be slightly darker. Both of these differences are insignificant.

I have seen this book referenced in many places as one of the best resources in the field of woodworking. It is a masterpiece. This fact is made obvious by the difficulty in finding copies of the book for sale in either new or used form. Last week (Aug 2006) I saw three copies for sale on Amazon from $79 to $129 and all sold quickly. PLEASE NOTE - I also saw three "for sale" listings for this book last week by using a FROOGLE search. Three different Electronic bookstores indicated they had a copy of the book in stock. I contacted all three and found that they weren't really "bookstores" but rather are organizers of individuals who sell books and use the electronic bookstores as a central clearinghouse. All three said to contact the actual individual sellers. I did. None of the three had a copy for sale, even though all three of the electronic bookstores had listings saying that they had copies in stock for sale. I found a number of negative comments about these electronic bookstores when I searched. To their credit, FROOGLE stated that you should check out a seller before making a purchase. I hope this information helps you. I am very happy that I was able to buy a copy of the book. If you really want to see this book and can't buy a copy, go to your library.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST resource on furniture construction!.......2006-05-15

I own probably a half dozen books on furniture construction and joinery and found this book to be the best source for joinery techniques period. From it's detailed explanations to numerous pictures and drawings it thoroughly covers all aspects of great cabinetry. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I am not a book reader. The chapters are laid out well and are written as though a beginner might be picking it up, but don't let that fool you, this is a book an experienced woodworker will enjoy as well. There are tons of ideas and explanatory plans, while these plans are not measured drawings or as detailed as some other book, I feel they provide enough information to develop your own set of plans from. Most of the plans cover height, width and depth only, but the joinery is covered and the general concepts are there.

As a professional finish carpenter by trade and a furniture builder for fun and profit I find this book a great reference tool as well, I use it often. I highly recommend it for any serious woodworkers library.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST woodworking books I own!.......2005-11-17

This book is very complete covering fundamentals of furniture anatomy, styles, and wood movement, various joints, subassemblies used in all kinds of projects, and Furniture.

This is a great book for the beginner or professional.

Provides a lot of good inspiration as well.

Dining tables, occasional tables, desks, chests, cabinets, built-in cabinets, and beds are all of the Furniture types covered.

Beautifuly illustrated with exploded plans of how all of the parts go together... I can thumb through it and end up reading it for hours!! It's just really a very great book to own if you're interested in woodworking.

It seems I always have within an arms reach!

I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2004-02-17

I like to check out books from the library before I buy them. I checked this one out, now I'm buying it.

As a novice woodworker, I anticipate this will be an excellent reference as I move forward with designing and building cabinets, tables, and chairs.

It's not a how-to book, it's a reference. So when I'm wondering how I'm going to design a small cabinet with four drawers and a television cabinet for the bedroom, this book will give me options and ideas from casework to drawers to what goes on the bottom and what goes on the top.

I think it's a great reference.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2003-10-02

This is an outstanding book. Shows styles and variations of just about all desired furniture pieces. Even though it does not show methods of work or measurments it is a MUST for any woodworker. It is a sure straight line reference to any project of furniture making.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother With This One.......2005-10-17

I saw this at the bookstore and read through it. I can't imagine who would have use for this book. It is an illustrated guide to design and has numerous pictures of various door styles. It is a very poor "how to" book, and even includes metal doors and drawers (why would anyone include metal fabrication in a woodworking book?).

Many of the kitchen photos are out of focus. The only interesting portion of the entire book was on page 126 which explained how to create snap-together window grills (a.k.a. mullions).

The end of the book is filled with photos of the author's door production facility (and this would be interesting to which group of woodworkers?).

All in all, this book is not worthy of Linden Publishing who usually produces outstanding works.

5 out of 5 stars A Brief Illustrated History of the Bookshelf.......2000-05-04

Marshall Brooks' unique and intriguing A BRIEF ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE BOOKSHELF follows the development of bookshelves worldwide, speculating on its fascinating correlation with the development of literacy and publishing. Shelves from the first millenium B.C. Mesopotamian to today's subterranean stacks in the New York Public Library are covered. His treatment of this esoteric sounding subject is actually loaded with interest and fancy. Pen and ink artwork by the author manages to stay historically accurate even as its style introduces a sweet note of whimsy. Detail in the illustrations takes the burden off text, leaving it a nugget of quick, fascinating and often quirky facts. This illustration/text balance is great for promoting reflection on the reader's part. Peppered with quotes from Jack Kerouac, Charles W. Eliot and Brooks' own father, A BRIEF HISTORY also includes enticing references to the likes of James Baldwin and Holly Golightly, as well as obscure anecdotes about figures including Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Pepys, Napoleon, and the French composer, Alkan. Brooks provides a diverse bibliography for those readers lured into further exploration. A BRIEF ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE BOOKSHELF is a significant book with a lightness of spirit.

5 out of 5 stars A Brief Illustrated History of the Bookshelf.......2000-04-12

This is a thoroughly delightful little gem of a book--witty, erudite and to the point. Let's face it--bookshelves are a fairly obscure and dry topic; Brooks' wonderful illustrations and text bring out the highlights (and a few low points) of three thousand years of the book storage conundrum. The letterpress paperback version is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars A short walk through the stacks.......2000-04-06

Marshall Brooks's Brief Illustrated History came out a year before Henry Petroski's The Book on the Bookshelf, but didn't generate nearly the amount of attention. That's a shame, because for those of us who are mildly curious as to how the storage of books has evolved, but who do not have a dozen uninterrupted hours of reading in which to satisfy that curiosity, this is a better book. Want to know how the Egyptians stored cuneiform tablets? Here's 100 words on the subject - just enough, not too much - and best of all, a charming drawing to go with it. Brooks has rendered and explained everything from Samuel Pepys custom glass-front cabinets that allowed him to store his books by height, to the library of Congress's self-ventilating shelves. This little book is a pleasure, and at only 80 pages or so won't cause your own bookshelves to collapse under its weight.

A nice novelity but, hardly worth the price tag. Birch Brook Press brings the only redeeming element to this book. I value it for the workmanship in the binding and print quality, nothing more.

How useful is this book? Within a fortnight of its purchase, I repaired the damaged cockbeading on my mid-Victorian/ Scotch chest of drawers using a scratch stock, and managed to open a locked cabinet door on my Victorian chiffonier by cutting a new barrel key. Prior to purchasing the book, I had contacted a local cabinetmaker regarding fashioning a replacement cockbeading for my chest of drawers. The cabinetmaker assured me that the job was "...very complex" and placed me on a year-and-a-half waiting list. My local locksmith was prepared to charge me $150 to open the locked cabinet door on my chiffonier. The barrel key blank cost me $12.

The book is a breath of fresh air with its emphasis on restoration using old methods, techniques, and materials rather than prescribing the usual hearty dollop of filler and varnish to get your beloved piece back to its former glory. I found the chapter devoted to colour matching to be particularly significant, and I have yet to encounter a book that delves so deeply into the matter.

The chapter entitled "Is it Really Antique?" made for a fascinating read. The Development of the English Wood Screw, Woodworking Methods, Locks, and Anatomy of a Fake are all accompanied by a bounty of useful photographs.

Truly the most useful book that I have found on the subject, and one that I reach for before all of the others when I need a question answered.

Bennett has created a clear guide that both beginning and experienced restorators will find helpful. His techniques preserve the integrity and value of antiques by treating them conservatively. I especially appreciate Bennett's directions for formulating fillers and cleaners. If you want to do a proper job of restoring a fine antique this book is an essential tool.
