Book Description
Treehouses & Playhouses You Can Build shows how average "do-it-yourself" families can easily and affordably bring to life a "Hobbit's Treehouse," a "Pirate's Playhouse," or a "Crow's Nest" in their own backyards! There are a lot of books out there filled with enchanting photos of elaborate treehouses and playhouses built by professionals and costing tens of thousands to build. For the rest of us, there's bit of elbow grease, a lot of imagination, a trip to the hardware store-and Treehouses & Playhouses You Can Build.

Many missing instructions and difficult paths.......2007-09-03
I built the Treeless Treehouse on page 81. During the project, I found the instructions lacking, and sometimes incorrect. Dimensions critical to building were many times left out. There might have been a bright side to this, as I now know my trigonometry, which was critical to getting lengths right. I also found that the recommended decking was heavy and hard to work with. They recommended 2X6 in order to reduce the number of floor joists. A bad trade-off in my opinion, as these are heavier and harder to work with than a 1X6. They recommended installing the railing posts inside the deck as opposed to the outside. A bad recommendation in my opinion, as it necessitated cutting patterns out of 2X6 which is hard to do. In fact, they recommend using a jig saw for this. I used a skill saw and a hand saw. I don't think a jig saw would cut it. I recommend looking elsewhere for a do-it-yourself book.
Great All-Around Treehouse Guide.......2007-07-05
Help me out greatly. I am below novice in construction knowledge. The book explained, diagramed, and visualized lots of great methods and ideas for building treehouses. I find myself going back to it again and again for efficient methods of accomplishing the task at hand.
All the information you need.......2007-04-19
This book is great. Lots of great ideas and detailed explanation on how to build a treehouse/playhouse. From how to choose the best tree to many different house plans. We just finished building a treehouse and this was the only guide we used.
Great Treehouse Book!.......2007-03-08
This book is a wonderful how-to book for those who need all the help they can get on building a treehouse. The plans are great and we are building the basic treehouse which is perfect for our 8 and 5 year old kids. Lots of ideas on everything from picking trees, buying lumber, safety tips, to flexible extras. We bought all three of David Stiles treehouse books and this was by far the best and we could have just bought this one and been happy but are glad to have them all. Would highly recommend to parents contemplating building a treehouse or for kids who want to dream of one.
the perfect book.......2007-01-12
Even I did'nt build the tree house so far, I think, I found exactly the right book. The different pictures give wonderful ideas of what you can do, the book shows how different techniques work and how to do it, even you are no professional carpenter.
Book Description
Build a lifetime of Memories
Whether simple or architecturally fanciful, a playhouse can be a magical place for your child. David and Jeanie Stiles use their own experiences to guide the amateur carpenter through the steps necessary to build an imaginative playhouse -- for the backyard, basement or playroom.
Designed to be put together with easy-to-obtain materials and common handyman tools, with clear step-by-step diagrams, these playhouses can be constructed by anyone who has basic carpentry skills (or a willingness to learn) and a weekend or two of spare time.
Projects include: A cardboard-box playhouse, a gingerbread playhouse, a fiberglass whale, a barn bed playhouse, a spook playhouse, a U.F.O. playhouse, a tree house, a log playhouse, a garden trellis playhouse, a three-legged fort and a complete selection of accessories.

What do you get for the money?.......2007-10-10
This is a great book wide range of choices, from a bed made to look like a barn, a play cube with each side a different fantasy (fire dept, post office, general store and puppet theatre) and not just standard playhouses. A log house, treehouses, and a trellised house that begs to be covered in climbing flowering vines and outfitted for a tea party.
You also get swings, a hand-built trolley, a cargo net climber, table and chairs for the house, a slide, shelves, benches and a swan-shaped rocking chair.
Admittedly not all plans for a beginner woodworker. He assumes a level of comfort in building that not all may have. Each project contains a detailed parts list--something lacking in other children's playhouse-type books, and lists the ages of children that the project is geared towards. The diagrams are black-and-white exploded drawings (show a two-dimensional view with measurements, angles and supports such as cleats or support blocks). If you are accustomed to these common layouts, you'll be fine.
He does make his own doors and windows which you may want to skip doing and just buy.
You can build........2007-07-12
Clear, concise and well illutrated. I bought this book to use as a point of departure/inspiration to build a playhouse. The authors have done a great job on all thier carpentry/design books.
Playhouses.......2007-07-05
A good book with lots of plan designs. This book could
use more color pictures and examples, but makes up for
it in design plans.
Good ideas, bad plan.......2006-04-25
Overall, it's an 0K book - the ideas are good, but the descriptions are lacking. The thing that led me to write this review is to warn potential buyers that the (at least the "traditional playhouse") plans are riddled with errors. If you buy the book and plan to build the playhouse on the cover, make sure you check and double check the dimensions and angles before cutting your expensive wood. I found myself reading the scarce instructions over and over trying to figure out what the authors were talking about in many circumstances. I'd recommend, but WATCH OUT FOR THE ERRORS!
aw, come on.......2005-12-04
I don't understand some of the people who write reviews. Do you
only think this book is bought by do-it-yourselfers? yes, there
are some people like me, who don't know anything about carpentry
who would gladly pay a carpenter to build a lovely playhouse
or anything else made of wood. . All I need are nice pictures to show the man. so why put down the book?

Better Instructions, creative ideas.......2007-10-11
This book has a good opening with the kinds of play a child wants and how to match play areas to them. The woodworking instructions are clearer than "Playhouses You Can Build: Indoor and Backyard Designs," (Stiles, David R) and the color pictures more inspiring but there are fewer projects. Black & Decker does a nice job of showing how to anchor play structures and provide a safe surface (mulch, pea gravel, shredded tires).
You get some playhouses, a tree house, a swing set, porch swing, child-size picnic table, planters, a bird house that is the perfect beginner wood project, a sandbox, a balance beam (way fun!) and a portable putting green that will inspire you to make a mini-golf course.
Too many pictures not enough instructions.......2003-09-14
The main problem with this book lies in the fact that there are a lot of pictures for things they do not have instructions for. Anyone who has children will see the problem in this right away...your children are inevitably going to want you to build the things there are no instructions for. If you are a first time builder, this will not be something you can do.
Aside from that, the instructions they do have seem thorough and easy to follow.
If you know what you are doing this will probably be a good book for ideas, but if you are a first timer like myself, keep the book away from your kids or you'll find yourself in a bad spot. haha.
Detailed enough that anyone can build them.......2003-09-03
In an unusual departure from books of this type the first thirteen pages discuss what children like to do, the type of play different ages are interested in, and how to match an appropriate play area to the child. With that foundation firmly laid, "The Backyard Playground: Recreational Landscapes & Play Structures" then proceeds Landscaping for Playgrounds, Large Play Projects, and Small Play Projects. For each project there are multiple illustrations, materials lists, tools lists, and detailed step-by-step instructions to walk you through the entire project. No steps are left out of the project. I have seen several books that detail how to build a swing set but never discuss the appropriate ground coverings or how to correctly anchor it into the ground so it is safe. "The Backyard Playground" makes no assumptions that you would already know things like this. This text assumes that you are starting with bare ground and covers all the steps to build your project from scratch. The illustrations are so well done that anyone can easily follow along and create a playground area rivaling the best commercial projects. "The Backyard Playground" is a highly recommended book for anyone wanting to build their own children's play area and the only one I have ever reviewed that I would feel comfortable recommending to the novice handyman.

Sooo much for the money, great ideas.......2007-10-09
This is a very comprehensive book on children's play structures that begins with lists of what children like to play with by age, what they can do to help build by age (nails, screws, shoveling gravel) and how to involve them in the design.
There are water features, sand areas, play houses (from forts to teepees to castles), tree houses, cable rides, bike "roller coaster," climbing walls, skateboard ramp, and other fun things. There are amazing details like a periscope on a tree house, window boxes, steering wheels and a telephone of rubber tubing and funnels.
Don't think you need a huge lot either, as these projects scale well and there is even a tiny yard shown with a water feature, a stage for plays, a circular bike path, and a sand box beside a grassy garden area.
If you build these, they will come.
must have.......2005-04-20
Book is very informative and give several plans. Also explains how to make your own cargo net (if you can find the materials) and a really cool spider-web climbing net
Book Description
Boys and girls love woodworking projects! But most kids (and most parents) lack woodworking skills. That's where Kids' Building Workshop steps in. Craig Robertson, a master carpenter and renowned designer and builder of furniture, and Barbara Robertson, an art educator who specializes in teaching children, have developed an inspired method for teaching kids and their parents the basics of woodworking.
In this lively, fully photographed and illustrated book, the Robertsons present fun projects that teach essential woodworking skills. For example, the Spider-Web String Art project teaches kids how to wield a hammer, and the Drilled Name Plaque project teaches kids the safe and proper way to use a drill.
Building on these basic skills, the book moves on to intermediate-level projects. Kids learn how to make a sawhorse, a tool box, a step stool--all things that every carpenter must have to build bigger and more elaborate projects.
Finally, the kids are ready to take on seriously hip projects: a cricket cage, a book house, a dollhouse (and dollhouse furniture!), a lemonade stand, and a kids' play table.
The Kids' Building Workshop is a great primer that passes the hammer to a new generation of woodworking kids (and their parents).

Old book, old feel, old toys, old tools.......2007-07-14
I like the Dover books, which generally re-print older books on decent-enough paper for a low price. This book is no exception; it's an old-fashioned book that was originally published in the 1950s.
The projects all involve hand tools instead of power tools, although the modern equivalent (with appropriate supervision) could be substituted. I generally like the older tools, although they're slower and require more actual skill to use. Your junior woodworker should know how to read and have some basic familiarity with the tools (or some scrap lumber handy to figure out how to use them). Ideally, s/he would also have some basic familiarity with some of the concepts of woodworking, like the fact that you spend more time with the sandpaper than with the saw.
With a child old enough to figure out most of the directions on his/her own, I think this would work best for what the child development people call "parallel play:" your junior woodworker works independently on his (or her) project, and you work independently on your own unrelated project -- but in the same room or area. This approach allows independence and encourages problem-solving, while still letting you keep a carefully peeled eye to head off disasters (ideally without the child noticing how closely you're watching).
The major downside for the younger kids is that the there's nothing about woodworking that lends itself to instant success (or commercially slick achievements on a first try). Persistence, patience and a decent attention span are necessary for the completion of projects.
Here's the list of fifteen projects in this inexpensive book:
sailboat
bird feeder
hot dish coaster
steamboat
toy sled
tie rack
book rack
table lamp
clock shelf
candlesticks
towel holder
cart
birdhouse for a wren
shoeshine kit
flower box
To be honest, these projects may or may not interest your youngster, and unfortunately our media generation may not consider these projects exciting enough or impressive enough to justify all the time and energy they require. (Then they'll complain that everything these days is mass-produced plastic.)
As with all craft-y projects, you should consider what you could do with it when you're done. If the answer is "can't do anything with any of these," then perhaps you should look for a different book.
Easy Carpentry for Children.......2007-03-31
I'm not a child (60) but I wanted some simple woodworking projects to get started with. This is a great resource
A Review from South Africa.......2005-08-12
This little book looks good so far although we'll still have to saee how the kids cope on their own & if they'll be able to successfully plan each project - unfortunately it's all in inches & feet & I'm not keen to teach my kids all that stuff so we are going to have to do conversions.I feel this could have been highlighted prior to purchase.

An excellent guide to carpentry........2001-11-27
Full of information on every aspect of the carpentry field. In depth and up to date.
Q & A work book!!!.......2001-11-08
This version (Workbook) of Modern Carpentry is a workbook. Its questions that you must fill in the blank (answer). It is NOT a book but more of a 'test' (I'm assuming) of the material in Modern Carpentry.
Center of the world in carpentry.......2000-12-10
This is the best carpentry and overall construction book I've ever read. This should be at the center of all of your construction books. I do construction in the Navy and we have some great books to learn from but this gives book gives you more info on standard construction practices, load sizes for lumber and such detailed information with pictures that can't be beat. I've owned an older edition and that helped me out alot, but this book is truly modern and up to date with construction practices going on right now. This is a must have and you won't go wrong.
Secondary book needed.......2000-10-09
As a student in carpentry class, I find this book simple, helpful and detailed. But, our class has found ourselves going to other book sources to answer specific carpentry questions. Needed information on particular subjects is either too vague or non-existent, as this book leaves out some details. Overall, this is a good foundational reference as a supplement to other sources.

This was my daughter's favorite book as a baby!!.......2002-10-09
I bought this book for my daughter when she was about six months old and my husband and I read it to her quite a few times daily. My daughter absolutely loved this book! I liked ready it to her and showing her the pictures. She played with this book soo much that I now need to replace it with another. Great book!!!
Inexpensive, cheerful and just the right length........1998-11-17
My daughter loves the sound effects in this book. The idea that Pippa helps her mother with the daily tasks is very appealing, as my daughter loves to help me. She also loves that Pippa completes a new task all by herself. My daughter is 17 months old and learned to recognize herself as "me" from this book, as Pippa recognizes herself at the end of the book. I love the bright eyes on Pippa and her mother and the decorations in the mouse-hole house.
Book Description
As Mr. Butterfield carves a Jesse Tree in an old dusty church, a curious young boy distracts him, asking about the various symbols on the tree. Against his better judgment, the old man finds himself retelling the familiar Biblical tales that trace the lineage of Christ, from the Garden of Eden to Jesus' birth. Under the carpenter's skilled hands, the Jesse tree grows and an unlikely friendship begins to take root as well.
Geraldine McCaughrean's fresh retellings of familiar Bible events and Bee Willey's whimsical and striking illustrations create a rich and contemporary tale, perfect for reading during Advent or anytime.
The Jesse Tree will captivate readers who know and love the Bible stories as well as those who are reading them for the first time.
