AS SEEN ON "THE VIEW"!
The real news of our lives is not in newspapers. We must chronicle our own adventures and achievements, our brilliant observations and our comic relief, our best friends and our greatest embarrassments. Visual Chronicles is all about YOU: your dreams, your memories, your daily routines, your greatest loves and your secret pet peeves. It's all about getting to know yourself better, savoring the wonderful ebb and flow of your everydays, and celebrating it all in visual mementos of your life journey.
Art journaling is fun, cathartic and EASY. Each chapter of Visual Chronicles quiets common fears such as "Nothing happens in my life." or "I'm just not artistic." with projects such as the "My Day Unfolds Journal", and "Experiments with Composition." Inside, you'll learn that journaling doesn't take big chunks of time--just bits and pieces here and there, whenever the spirit strikes. "Get Going" exercises offer instant ideas such as listening to the conversations you have with yourself or recognizing that meaningful ephemera is a part of each and every day. Soon, you'll see that inspiration awaits all around you: a midnight trip to the store, a favorite scarf, an unexpected phone call, junk email, your breakfast plate . . .
Don't wait another second. Make creative journaling a part of your everyday life, busting through self-doubt, time clocks, piles of laundry, and every other roadblock along the way. With Visual Chronicles, you'll be inspired to tell your story the way only you can!
Rosie O'Donnell, The View, October 19, 2006:
"This is the only book you'll ever need, to learn how to scrapbook in a way that is uniquely yours."
RubberStamp Madness Magazine
In this book, plump as plump can be with illustrations, the authors guide you on a whirlwind trek of empowerment.
Somerset Studio Magazine
What a dynamite combination! ...A terrific way to start the (art journaling) journey.
Skirt! Magazine
It will inspire the intimidated artist within and it's filled with easy projects and practical tips.

life changing book.......2007-09-20
Visual Chronicles is a must have book for any crafter or artist. Beginning artists will learn new skills and advanced artists will be re-energized. The authors are lighthearted and funny and the projects are easy to follow. Once you make your own personal palette, you will see everything in life differently. This book is an oasis in a desert of sepia toned craft books by authors who take themselves way too seriously. By the end of this book, you will be an artist and you'll have made two new best friends. Read this book! I can't wait for the next book by these talented sisters.
Good book for new art journalists.......2007-09-13
This was the first book I read when I learned there was such a thing as art journaling. I'm a photographer and not a painter, but I love to work with my hands and with paint and glue and expressing myself on paper. This book showed me from the start that I don't have to be a painter or art student to begin art journaling; it took all the intimidation away and gave me the practical tools and encouragement I needed to begin this new art form for me. The written style of the book is personal and conversational, and I've njoyed reading it, not to mention learning so much, from the first application of the glue stick up.
collage,/mixed media.......2007-09-04
this book was exactly what i was looking for. It explains in simple and easy to understand terms, how to go about jornaling on your collaged books, which can also extend to scrapbooking. An essential guide book for the beginner or advanced mixed media artist and scrapbooker. Definately reccomended
Must Have!.......2007-07-25
If you are new to Visual Journaling, this is a must have book. Wonderful directions for getting started and getting yourself to open up to this unique experience. Even if you don't think of yourself as artistic, this book will pull it out and you'll enjoy the journey.
staying creative in a decidedly uncreative world..........2007-07-25
I have every book on art journaling known to man. Quite a few on regular journaling, too. And a fair bit on paper arts. I might just have a small, tiny book *addiction*. That's neither here nor there.
What IS both here and there is that I lusted after this book before it came out. I think I may have actually scared some people at B&N with the crazy-eyed, wild-haired begging for them to hurry up and get it in. (I'd preordered it here, but it was taking just way too long. Yes, I know they ship the first day. That's beside the point. I'm not so good with instant gratification.)
So when it came in from Amazon, the first thing I did was toss aside the other filler books I bought to get the free shipping and flopped down on the floor with Visual Chronicles.
An hour later, when I came up for air, the first thing I did was prepaint some shoes. SHOES, people! Who woulda thunk of creating a literal *walking journal*? Evidently, Linda and Karen.
From that first set of shoes until now, I keep finding pieces of this book in things that I do, artwise. It's a revolutionary book in a very quiet way -- making you think about both the extraordinary and the everyday. Those little "Have No Fear" quotes (which one reviewer obviously didn't understand to be set-offs for tidbit tips) get repeated in my head when I'm stuck, or needing a dose of inspiration. And the projects, while not my typical style, have been something I've gone back to again and again. (The miniprompt book and the color glossary in particular.) And I definitely didn't find any of it to be condescending -- maybe because I really see the authors (through their writing here) as friends. Highly enthusiastic, you-can-do-it cheerleader friends, wanting to share a little bit of their creative spirits with everyone, rather than hoarding it all for themselves.
Like I said, I've got a shelf full of journaling books. Among those, there are probably a dozen that I refer back to again and again, and Visual Chronicles is one of those. I've never regretted buying it, or keeping it at the ready -- because that inspiration that's so freely given is priceless.

She made my mitered corners beautiful.......2007-09-06
I'm making a book with boards and a leather cover; I used LaPlantz's mitered corners method (Figs. 36 - 39, pp. 39-40), and they look great! I'm sold, she's my mitering guru. Thanks!
Each stitch drawn in sequence.......2007-06-20
Detailed instructions accompanied by drawings on the same page of each stitch to be taken to bind a book, stitch varieties, binding paperbacks into custom hardbacks, creating 3 dimensional art work in book form plus invaluable pragmatic advice such as the safe relative distance from hole to edge and hole to hole, depending on size of book and binding type, as well as how many pages becomes too cumbersome to open or view with a particular technique.
Multiple suggestions follow each demonstration for expanding the technique shown, or varying the format to satisfy one's own preferences and prejudices. Ms. LaPlantz specifies infinitesmally small steps which make following the directions exceptionally easy. And she progresses from standard codex (covers and a spine) to remarkably artful constructions all the while being encouraging, enthusiastic and clear. She does not make extensive use of commoditized products other than printer paper for the book text pages, and recommends simple tools for beginning (needle, thread, cardboard, glue, paste, scissors) as well as explaining how to make one's own binding frame from an old hardback book.
Unhappily, her subseqent Art and Craft of Handmade Books was not as well edited as Cover to Cover, as you can see from her website which lists pages of corrections to the printed edition as well as including material edited out which was necessary for clarity, continuity and simplicity of instruction. She even includes bonus materials, photos, techniques not in Art and Craft of Handmade Books.
Cover to Cover is excellent, like having a mentor at one's side with years of experience guiding one's acquisitiion of binding skills.
Highly recommended.

Awesome Book.......2005-08-22
This is the book to get for anything concerning making creative books. From artsy books to making your own unique scrapbook, this is a great resource to give you a new idea or a new twist to your paper crafts.
Wonderful Introduction to Bookmaking.......2005-07-18
I bought this for both my daughter and me to learn how to make books. My daughter was not very interested in reading a book about bookmaking -- she prefers to embark on her own journeys -- but when she saw a few of the examples, she tore it out of my hands and set to work. She has already made the two simple starter versions, and she is 12. It is great fun to see her puzzling through the instructions and turning out a very nice little book. I am looking forward to making photography books. Actually, I'm looking forward to printing the pages using my Epson Pro 4000 on double sided fine art papers such as Illuminata cotton photo rag 300 gsm double sided paper and having my daughter put the books together.
You can read the other reviews here for the nitty gritty of what is inside this book. I will tell you that I went to my local Jerry's Artarama, where they had a wide assortment of books on bookmaking. I sat down and looked through all of them, and this is the one that impressed me the most as being clear, with simple starter projects and complete equipment lists, as well as a nice, steady progression towards more complicated projects. I even bought it there (sorry, Amazon, but I do like to support my local shops and you get the vast bulk of my book purchases!).

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Ideas.......2006-05-04
I found this book to be extremely useful. The techniques were all new to me. The one that I am going to try first is the wax resist. I am a little worried about the other techniques that use solvents - I don't know where to buy them, and I don't want anything unnatural that is going to hurt my body. Overall, this is a lovely book. One department that does need a little bit of expansion is making the journal itself. However, I already have a blank journal that I bought from a bookstore beginning with Bor (they offer great blank journals CHEAP) and I am just going to use the techniques. Cheers!!
journal making?.......2005-05-13
I bought this book wanting to learn how to make a journal. This book did not show the basics. It was a waste of money, the author seemed more interested in presenting cute ideas and making pretty pictures than teaching basics.
Creative and Inspiring.......2003-08-11
I loved this book, but when I got "Making Memory Books and Journals by Hand" I was surprised to find "Making Journals by Hand" is actually included in that text in full: word for word, page for page, project for project .
Instead of buying "Making Journals by Hand" and "Making Memory Boxes", save some money and buy one book: "Making Memory Books and Journals by Hand". This book combines all of the projects above and then some.
All of these books have great projects and instructions.
expansive techniques, but the art is up to us ý.......2003-04-10
This luscious book peeks into the art journals of many talented artists, giving step-by-step instructions on basic techniques for compiling and binding journals that mix image and word. Because the contributors are all highly talented artists, this book should have been more intimidating to my non-artist self than it was. Instead, it is encouraging and freeing, and the author provides short helpful tips on the process of writing a journal along with illustration and decoration. I read the book in two addictive sittings and am looking forward to spending more time with it, and with the books and websites listed in the bibliography, even if I never try any of the techniques. Thank you, Jason, for a generous, empowering, and visually stunning book.
Skimps on Content.......2003-02-23
While the journals in here were really beautiful, it doesn't look like the author put a lot of effort into explaining them. It only took me about an hour to read this book and, even with a few creative ideas(mostly from the pictures), the general content was sparse. Some of the shaded sections on the side looked like space filler (for example, one on "themes" describes a travel journal's purpose as "chronicling your travels"...no way!). It bothers me when writers use pretty pictures to try and pull off the appearance of a quality book. Flip through this book in the library to get some good ideas, but don't expect thoughtful written advice.

Customer Reviews:
A Terrific Kinder Literacy Resource!.......2007-06-02
This teaching resource is definitely a keeper! My kinders loved making their own alphabet books. I copied the letters onto tagboard. Then, the kinders completed their letter art projects. Next, I cut the letters out and glued them to another piece of tagboard. Underneath the letter, the students completed a fill in the blank statement about each of the letters related to the art projects they completed. Finally, all of the letters were bound into a book. Wow! The kinders loved reading and sharing their books over and over with each other! This resource was a wonderful reading, writing, and tactile experience all in one! It's important to note that there's flexibility if you want to change what each letter stands for when you complete the art projects and there are additional teaching tips for each letter too!
A Keeper.......2006-03-27
As a childcare provider I love this book it is a creative way to learn the alphabet a great resources if you make up your own curriculum. You may photo copy it for many years of use instead of purchasing a boxed curriculum every month for a certain number of children. Parent's are always interested to see what their children have learned. With each letter of the alphabet it is always different and interesting. But most important children have fun as they learn.
Great Book.......2005-09-30
I'm a teacher, and I have to say that this is a great book! I love how it breaks down activities by letter and also gives lesson ideas, too! It's very user-friendly!
Great for Pre-k!.......2005-08-01
I used this book with my 2004-2005 Pre-K class. It's very easy to incorporate the lessons into your daily/weekly calendar. My students particularly enjoyed the letter bag game (put mystery items into a pillowcase that begin with the letter you are teaching. Pass it around and have the children grab out 1 item and try to guess what it is). I incorporated it into show-n-tell Fridays. IE: Bring in something that starts with letter B. I would put those show n tell items into the letter bag & the kids loved seeing their item pulled out of the letter bag by other children.
Be sure you collect the work pages in an organized fashion because at the end of the year, you'll find yourself overwhelmed! I'd recommend creating the books as you go rather than at the end of the school year. I used pipe-cleaner to bind my books and it worked quite well.
I will use this book again!
Alphabet Study.......2001-10-03
Learn-the-Alphabet is a well organized book with ideas that are
easy to adapt to any classroom curriculum. A must for the early
childhood classroom.

Scrapbookers who are big fans of die-cuts will find ideas galore in Creative Scrapbooking by Sandi Genovese. A noted designer and the creative director for the Ellison company, Genovese has compiled dozens of scrapbook-page designs based around Ellison paper die-cuts. But for those who don't want to go to the expense of purchasing the ready-made cutouts, she provides 26 pages of patterns that can easily be traced or photocopied to re- create any project in the book. Relying on the cutouts to define album pages does tend to give them a mass-produced air rather than a unique look, but the designs are fun and colorful, and the good illustrations and directions make these easy projects even easier. The final section applies these scrapbooking methods to other items, including greeting cards, invitations, and a mobile. --Amy Handy
Book Description
“Sandi is probably one of the foremost authorities on the topic of scrapbooking and the use of die cuts. Sandi outlines clearly the materials and steps required ...discusses everything from techniques, tools and papers, to the assembly of the finished project....Each is well photographed.”—Craft Digest.
Customer Reviews:
Ok! book, If beginner........2007-09-21
If you are a beginner scrap-booker this will be helpful to you. I wanted the book, hoping for a "how to" do some of Sandi's uses with the Sizzit Die Cut Machine. It was a little helpful but most of it I already knew.
Outdated Book!.......2002-01-23
I was very disappointed in this book. It seems to very outdated, and the ideas presented are not the most creative. Sure, the beginning scrapper could easily copy the layouts in the book, but they don't have that professional look that you expect to see in a scrapbooking book. The book does have a few good tips for beginning scrappers, and it has some patterns of diecuts in the back, which were helpful, however, I wouldn't recommend buying this book for those reasons alone.
Not as expected.......2002-01-11
This book was not as I expected. It had some ideas if you want to work for awhile. I would not recommend this book to the beginning scrapbooker.
Terrific and Simple Ideas.......2001-03-01
This is a great book for both the beginner and the advanced scrapbookers. There are wonderful examples, plenty of patterns and simple directions. A must have!
Great Book!.......2000-03-16
I'm a beginning scrapper who was overwhelmed by the pages I'd seen in the scrapbook magazines. A friend recommended this book to me and boy did it help. The book is broken down by technique, which is wonderful. I was able to create good looking pages just by following the easy directions.

Many people find journaling a gratifying pursuit, a way to gain insight, refine observations, or express feelings. Although it really takes no more than a simple blank book to begin, how much more rewarding to the whole creative process to record one's innermost thoughts in a special book invented expressly for that purpose, perhaps geared to reflect a special interest or to chronicle a particular mental journey.
Suzanne Tourtillott's Making & Keeping Creative Journals is a stunning mentor for this process. With lovely photos, articulate text, and good directions, the volume actually functions on three levels: as an exploration of the art of journal keeping, a thorough introduction to basic bookbinding techniques, and a step-by-step guide documenting 15 extraordinary collaborations between book artists and journalers following a specific pursuit. The leather covers of the bird lover's journal, for instance, open into a bird shape, with a place to hold found feathers; the text block becomes a space for writing and drawing. The sculpture journal is an accordian-fold construction that can be closed like a traditional book or displayed as a sculptural object in its own right.
Other creations include journals on the themes of travel, dreams, relocation, and quilting. These highly personal statements are each a work of art, in a book that provides a wellspring of inspiration for experienced crafters seeking ways to stretch their imaginations. --Amy Handy
Book Description
“Through extensive line-art illustration and full-color photographs of custom journals, it encourages the artist and record-keeper within you.”—RubberStampMadness. “Imaginative crafters...will find projects here for 15 journals constructed from a variety of materials. Public libraries will welcome this to their crafts collections.”—Library Journal. “A mouthwatering menu of intriguing one-of-a-kind journals, whimsical to historical.”—Tabellae Ansatae.
Customer Reviews:
pick a subject, any subject.......2005-05-25
i write this as an experienced amateur book maker and keeper of a "creative" journal.
i think the author bit off more than she could chew. the book purports to tell you both how to keep a journal and how to make one of your own. the initial part about how to keep a journal is thin and insubstantial and focuses almost exclusively on writing [not a bad thing, but there are other ways to journal].
the two major sections of the book focus on basic book making and descriptions of collaborative projects between book artists and journal keepers. the book making instructions are incomplete and confusing, even for experience book makers. the diagrams are very confusing and poorly labled. the collaborative projects include some great books, but the idea that you can replicate these projects from the scant instructions provided is laughable. i wish there had been more photos of these books.
the text reads like an undergraduate term paper with too many exclamation points. the only redeeming features are the pictures of the collaborative projects. there are better books out there if you want to learn to keep or need inspiration for keeping a creative journal, or if you want to learn book making. this book does neither.
Great - especially if you already know the basics.......2005-02-22
I've only been playing with book making for a little while....took one class at a rubber stamping show and really enjoyed it. I found this book shortly after that and having been using it, along with a few others to teach myself techniques. The pictures throughout the book are inspirational as well. The first chapters talk to things like the materials you'll use in book making (choosing papers, threads, tapes, adhesives) and how to actually do the book making (stitches, how the binding should look, etc). The nice thing here is that the author gives you leeway saying you could substitute this for that etc. Then the rest of the book is focused on creating specific types of journals/books: travel, introspection, confessions, dreams, poetry, grandmothers book, etc. Material lists are given as well as step by step instruction with both hand drawn pictures and photos of specific parts of the book like the binding. The only thing that I had a little trouble with was some of the terminology since it was new to me but as with other things, we pick that up as we learn. I think this is an excellent book for someone who has the basics under their belt or who has made a book to two before. For the beginner it's a book you can easily grow into, just need some patience. The results are well worth it.
Extensive for what it is..........2002-07-24
...but what it isn't is a book about writing journals.
This is mainly about crafting journals -- that is, putting together paper and covers, stitching and gluing and the craftsy part of creating a physical book. It does give lip service to information on why keep a journal and the different kinds of journals people keep: external or internal journey, healing and insight, confessional, chronicle for future generations, catalyst for creative expression. Techniques like freewriting and list making are mentioned along with narrative description, dreams, and poetry but the emphasis here is on putting together pages and covers; how to make booklets from different kinds of papers, etc.
Illustrations are photographs of journals people have made and drawings showing various methods of folding, stitching, joining and binding. There are specific projects that include intricate instructions on how to make different journals: a travel, dream, yoga, poet's, grandmother's, painters, gardener's, bird lover's, etc. journals. The child's summer journal even has a spiral binding. The covers of the reunion journal are two gloves.
If you want to hand craft books this should show you how. Each would make a special gift which you could give with pages filled with your own writing or as a blank book.
Making & Keeping Creative Journals.......2001-10-11
This is a lovely and inspirational book for making interesting journals. I was pleased to see that the projects in this book were fresh--not the same old thing, revisited. The photographs and examples are so beautiful I found myself thinking, "I want to make this one and this one and this one..."
This is probably not the best book for beginning book makers. I would describe myself as an intermediate book maker with several years of experience in binding different types of books. In making the Gardener's Journal, I had some difficulty interpreting some of the illustrations and one of the templates is flat-out wrong; however, these problems did not prevent me from completing the Gardener's journal and the finished product is really beautiful.
Also, some of the bindings and materials suggested are tricky. For example, several journals include leather covers and the instructions seem to gloss over what type of leather to use, how to prepare it, etc. For the less commonly used book binding materials, such as embossed metallic foil and dollhouse nails, a list of suppliers would have been extremely helpful--even if I had to go online to access it.
On the plus side, this is a great book to get ideas on keeping different types of journals: bird watching journals, gardening journals, etc.
Another fresh idea this book provides is the viewpoint of both the journaler and the book maker. The journaler defines the purpose of the journal and the book maker creates a journal to meet that purpose. Very cool.

Customer Reviews:
A Bit Dated.......2001-09-03
Don't let the 1990 date fool you; this book was originally published in 1963, and the 1990 reprint made only minor updates to two pages of supply source listings. While the basic concepts in the book are pretty much timeless (book stitching, basic cover creation, etc.), the "creative" portion of the book -- suggested artwork techniques for book covers -- is distinctly '60s. This covers about 1/3rd of the book's contents. If you are interested in the "creativity" side of book cover art, I would suggest looking for a newer book on bookbinding. Better yet, leave the cover plain, buy Print Shop, and whip up a dust jacket for the artwork ;-)
A Book Arts Classic.......1998-12-09
A must-have for your collection of books about bookbinding. In these pages you will be introduced to the parts of a book, materials, tools, and working procedures. Then the meat and potatoes of a variety of book forms well illustrated with photos covering simple pamphlets and note pads to wood covers, accordians, and binding with leather. There is a wonderful chapter on designing and creating your own unique papers using a variety of printing methods, stencils, marbling, paste, painting, 3D appliques, and more. There's even a section on book restoration. One of the pleasures of this book was the discussion of the tools and how to use them, especially book presses, adhesives, sewing frames, and cradles.
