Book Description

It is published to coincide with "Colors for Modern Fashion" and it is necessary to discuss some of the aspects of the new book to understand the changes in this one. This new edition of "9 Heads" is the re-statement of the author's approach to the subject of black and white drawings, incorporating the most developed thinking and views, both in terms of what the end product should look like, and how best to achieve it. "9 Heads" also presents a different style of finished drawing, one where figures are usually more fleshed-out and where garment fabrics are more rendered than in the drawings of the previous edition. This edition has been extended in scope as that together with "Colors for Modern Fashion" the two books constitute all the elements of modern fashion drawing from Beginners through to Advanced. In-depth treatment in men's fashion. More serious treatment of children's fashion. Completely revised and expanded chapter on drawing clothing on the figure. New chapter on fabrics shows how to make drawings so the fabrics can be identified from the drawing. New appendix with hundreds of flats of modern garments. Quality of the drawing is far higher than the other books on the market. Ideal for those who have no previous formal training in drawing and who have a need to learn the basics of fashion drawing quickly.

5 out of 5 stars GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT BOOK.......2007-10-03

This book is a must have for anyone who is seriosly into Fashion Illustration. I do some of my teaching with it, and students go crazy over the simplicity of the explanations.

5 out of 5 stars 9 Heads.......2007-07-07

This book is a must have for anyone who wants to learn to draw human figures or wants to go into fashion design. The language is easy to understand and the results are great. Your drawing skills improve and your drawings become more realistic. A must have for artists and future fashion designers.

5 out of 5 stars 9 Heads is the best.......2007-01-12

Great book for fashion illustration beginners and an excellent book for anyone with fashion illustration/art experience. Glossy pages, rendering, shading folds etc,. Up to date illustration sketches; many sketched poses, and flats in this book. My classmates were borrowing this book from me during class. You won't regret this purchase. This book is really heavy;Cover is made cheap. The front cover has fragile thick plastic corners that tear.

This was a gift for my daughter. This item came very quickly and in really good shape for being used. My daughter is a talented woman and she has designed clothes since she was 5 yrs old. This book is incredible for her to continue her gift and talent in designing.

5 out of 5 stars Best sketching book out there!!.......2006-12-23

I was really weary of buying this book because of the price, but I actually got it for a discounted price and it's SO worth it. It's a huge book and this new edition includes chapters on men and children. Personally I got it because I'm applying to F.I.T in NYC and I need help with my sketching skills (I have none). I found this book to be the best that I have seen and it has helped me so much. The instructions and the "9 heads" theory (9 heads make up the human body) are very simple and easy to understand. I love that she uses the "box" method to help you draw faces. I have never been an artist and this book helped me to draw some fabulous fashion sketches. SO worth the money if you really need to learn to sketch for fashion design.

Book Description

FIGURE DRAWING FOR FASHION DESIGN offers a concise, topic by topic guide to acquiring and perfecting these skills, concentrating on the female form. The coverage provided means that this book is ideal both for those who want to apply themselves professionally to fashion design, and for all enthusiasts of drawing the human body. Fashion plates are the primary means of visualizing ideas and concepts in costume and fashion design. To give an accurate impression of what is in a designer's mind it is vital to have complete mastery of the rules of figure drawing. Here, realism and anatomical precision are the chief values, whereas for costume and fashion, stylization and exaggeration are ways of adding individuality and verve to a plate, and of focusing attention on specific elements.

3 out of 5 stars Okay........2007-05-15

This book did help me with my drawings. I needed to know proper proportions and how to draw fabric, etc., but I agree with everyone else: the figures are very "superwoman"ish and, in my opinion, showing way too much skin! I had to put a paper cover over the book so my children wouldn't see the back cover! I was disappointed to find out that the typical design drawing has it's proportions exagerated to make the figure look very tall and thin, but I guess I should have seen that coming with the way today's fashions are. Fortunately the book also provided a scale for real-life proportions.

2 out of 5 stars Figure Drawing for Fashion Design Review.......2007-05-09

I was abit disappointed in this book, I found the illustrations quite old fashioned with an 80's vibe, not what I was expecting. Even the clothes in the illustrations had Dallas style shoulder pads. I'm studying fashion design in college, so I was expecting to be inspired, through the use of different media and rendering techniques, which unfortunately didn't happen. But some of the templates for poses are useful and it would be ok as a starting point.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for fashion artists-- maybe 4 for everyone else.......2007-04-26

This is the kind of book that deserves 5 stars simply based on the current competition: many other fashion books are either too expensive, or are just not done well enough, to justify a click on the "Add to Shopping Cart" button.

It's illustrations are about 89% black & white (in number), and 100% detail the basics of female fashion figures- no men! It's true that many of these women look a little on the stiff or masculine side; they actually sometimes look like Mick Jagger(!). Still, they generally look reasonably good, and nearly all are done in a very clean & consistent pencil style, which contributes to an overall professional look here. In 216 pages, about 26 pages include partial or full color. There are no photos or backgrounds, just figure drawings on white paper. About a quarter of the figures are nude; the rest having at least a little bit of clothing. The beginning of the book details basic close-up views of the head & figure, but most illustrations detail entire figures on the page. I really like the application of simple, 3-dimensional basic shapes to fashion figures here. It's a *highly* streamlined look at the basics. If you're a fashion artist I can't see why you wouldn't want this book, but if you're mainly interested in figure drawing in general, this is probably just a 4-star effort. People interested in developing more detailed figure drawing skills might also want to check out: The Figure: The Classic Approach to Drawing and Construction by Walt Reed, Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm, and then How To Draw Manga Volume 22: Bishoujo Around The World (How to Draw Manga) by Hikaru Hayashi. Check 'em out!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good.......2007-03-22

Well, the other reviews are right on. This book lays an incredible ground work for drawing fashion figures. It is definitely worth buying.

However, I highly reccomend to alter the figures a little unless you are illustrating women from "American Gladiator". The figures are very muscular, sometimes a little thick, and their lips are gigantic. Frankly, they are a little terrifying.

Enjoy the book!

This was a great book with fabulous sketches and ideas for upcoming fashion designers. The book presents sketches for all the different styles and cuts of clothing. Highly recommend!!

1 out of 5 stars misleading title; glad I checked it out from the library before purchasing it........2007-06-04

The title is an absolute lie. There aren't even general sketches to look onto as templates! This book, chock full of details on how to become "inspired", may help if you need assistance focusing on what motivates you--but otherwise, it's not going to teach you at all about fashion illustration.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-10

Takes the beginner the next step. Gives good information on and basics on being a fashion designer. It is the book you keep in your library and go back to as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Focuses more on the Creativity and not the Technical.......2007-01-06

I gave this book four stars because it did what I wanted it to do.Granted I would've loved it even more if there were thorough instructions on figure drawing. The book only skims over the basics of drawing the fashion figure so if you need help with the more technical aspects don't start here. This book is great if your like me, someone who already knows how to draw the fashion figure but needs to find an edge, more ideas... It should be called the fashion illustration drawing course because it does focus more on turning someone into a better illustrator.

In my opinion buy the book. For the price you will learn some really creative and whimsical techniques.

4 out of 5 stars almost a great tool.......2007-08-01

The text, as the previous reviewer writes, is excellent. I love the preliminary chapters for content and ability to communicate various concepts of fashion thinking. However, in the tutorials there are enough missing or unclear steps to frustrate someone attempting to learn new software. It would be helpful if the reader/user has previous familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in order to work past these issues. Needless to say, the text components that integrate Illustrator and Photoshop tools are quite helpful and promote realistic ways to use the software applications together. I am pleased with the text, but do look forward to a second edition.

5 out of 5 stars Fashion Artist (Fashion Design Series).......2007-09-26

I just started learning drawing fashion by following books. Fashion Artist is one of the books I use. I really liked it. It gives detailed instruction and I can see that I will be able to draw cool fashion figures in a few months.

5 out of 5 stars Fashion Artist.......2007-09-25

Given to my granddaughter...perhaps to spark an interest in fashion design. She was pleased...as was I. It seemed to be fairly comprehensive yet easy to understand as I skimmed it before giving it as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Bang for the Buck.......2007-07-05

For years, I've sketched fashion/outfits, automobiles, and architecture simply as a hobby. Because of schedule conflicts, proper classes to develop skills have never been possible. Naturally, I began looking for a "text book" that would help me to improve my proportion and shading skills as I've had the most difficulty with "human subjects".

After numerous purchases of everything from how-to books to actual text books, I can confidently say that Fashion Artist by Sandra Burke is exactly what I needed it to be. With clear examples, step by step instructions and lists of required materials, this book takes what can seem to be an overwhelming situation (figuring out proper limb placement and size plus contouring) and breaks it down into engaging, easy to retain information.

As someone who appreciates all styles of illustration, I also enjoyed the variety of artwork used to showcase the amazing potential offered to a budding artist.

Some of the "problem areas" that this book covers are hands and feet, facial features, and fabric rendering.

Whether you're a fashion illustrator looking for a refresher, an artist wanting to expand, or simply someone who enjoys all things fashion, this book fits the bill. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book especially for fashion students!.......2007-05-04

The fashion drawing techniques and illustrations in this book are excellent, plus it gets you up to speed quickly by focusing on key points. It is well laid out and can be followed step by step or dipped into wherever you feel you need some help with particular aspects of your fashion drawing or designing. The illustration styles are varied and inspiring - it covers fashion templates, flats and presentations for womenswear, menswear, childrenswear and even costume design!

The chapters on figure drawing techniques have some excellent advice and examples of poses, and those tricky things like faces, hands and feet. The chapters on layouts, presentions, mood & design boards, and getting a design portfolio together concentrate on the main points with examples of artwork from designers and illustrators in the fashion industry.

It is an excellent resource for those studying fashion or want to enter the fashion industry.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book.......2007-03-26

I bought this book for a teenager intent on becoming a fashion designer when she finishes school. The content, drawings, etc. are perfect for her. They not only teach her about the fashion industry, but also teach her how to draw and how to design. A must have for the would be fashion designer whatever the age.

2 out of 5 stars Rendering Fabric and Prints in Photoshop.......2007-03-12

Okay, this book has some great bits in it, but it's also full of a lot of "fluff." I wish it was more concise. I don't think it's worth what I paid for it. I can't say I would recommend it unless you are completely lost and want sections devoted to definitions, the textile industry, other printing methods, etc. I'm a Fibers student looking to go into the textile industry as a repeat artist, and I was hoping this book would cover more computer/program techniques. I learned better shortcuts and methods on my own than I did from this book. Do yourself a favor and find someone (or another book) that can cover Photoshop for you.

2 out of 5 stars A BIG MESS!.......2005-03-24

Absolutely not worth the price it is being sold for. i agree with other reviewers that half of the information is totally not required.Plus the CD's are a mess as half of your time is wasted in searching the relative images in the CD for the excercises and some of them are completely missing!!! I could not render half of the fabrics as per the instructions since as they are very unspecific & confusing. So many pages have been wasted in giving a brief of textiles which is a different subject altogether and the one who would want to use this book has to be thorough with textiles. The information on textiles also is too brief & confusing.Aslo there were too many examples & mini biographies of people who are successful CAD/Textile designers which was totally not required.I hopped & jumped & skipped throughout the book expecting something useful but in vain.I finally gave up and returned it.Please do not waste money on this book.I really would like someone to come up with a more specific and useful book for using such important softwares like Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop specifically for rendering fashion as I desperately want to learn this. I expected that this book would be a good substitute (as this is the only book i hv found till now that uses photoshop to render textiles) for the highly expensive CAD courses here in NY. But unfortunately i was thouroughly disappointed. Can someone please suggest me any other good books related to Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop for rendering fashion, textiles & prints?????Suggestions are welcome - nins25@gmail.com

3 out of 5 stars a necessary evil.......2005-01-24

this is one of only two refrences currently avlaible on the subject. (a third is coming soon)
there are a lot of editing problems, and missing files. extremly frustrating when you are trying to work thorugh the exercises.
but, i took the basics that it offered and ran with it.

it is a pricy book, but i would recommend it (as it's cheaper then the other book available) as of now, and seen the new book. hopefully a new addition will be released minus the mistakes. so that it can be more useful refrence for those of us intrested in this subject.

i'd also like to see some information on advanced techniques. and more info on using a drawing tablet.

the title is also misleading, as all you learn is how to render textiles.

2 out of 5 stars Very Basic Instruction NOT Inspiration.......2005-01-02

This book should have been 1/2 the size and 1/2 the price. I nearly returned it, but since there are so few instructional books on Photoshop geared towards textile/surface design available on the market, I stuck it out.
I'd throw out half the content. Too much text is spent explaining the textile industry. While it is important to understand the textile trade/printing process, that's not what I wanted when I bought this book. Much of the book focuses on "Basic Design" principles, putting together a portofolio, presentation boards, the future of digital printing etc... like a Textile Design 101 class. Some people might find this helpful ... I found it infuriating.
This book is NOT about inspiration. The exercises are drab, the illustrations and sample files are plain and artless. Sometimes key information about where to look for tools is missing or mis-labeled. One section refers to a Demo plug-in to use, but it doesn't name the plug-in and there are no plug-ins found on the CD. There are product placement "advertisements" that annoy me. And the author assumes from the get-go that the "student" has access to a flatbed scanner and other expensive hardware; clearly a textbook geared towards a shared studio/lab classroom situation.
The CD is a disaster. NONE of the file folders or names referenced in the text relate to the CD content. Most of the files are there, but not in any logical order and with different file names. When the author references a file in an exercise, you can spend more time looking for the file than actually performing the exercise. There are multiple copies of some files and it's missing other files altogether. Chapter 3 is the first chapter where exercises with CD files begin, but the Chapter 3 folder is empty! There are tons of images of "Student" work that is completely uninspired and seems more like a way to get the author's favorite student "published".
This is an unsophisticated and horribly uninspired text. I kept it because there is so little available geared towards textile design.
My background is in Fine Arts with an advanced understanding of textiles including weaving, sewing, handprinting textiles and traditional croquis painting. I am very computer literate and am not afraid of software. I've never been able to merge my hands on painting etc to the digital realm and have been looking for instructional aids to help with that. I had high expectations and wanted a fairly sophisticated reference book. I feel like I'm sifting through a lot of chaff for a meager meal. I guess I'm hungry.
I'm determined to break through to learn to utilize a very sophisticated product (Photoshop) for my needs. I'll get my inspiration elsewhere. I gave this book 2 stars only because there is some value in working through the exercises which are specifically geared towards pattern and textile design.
> If you are looking for inspiration, don't buy this book.
> If you know you'll be dissuaded and frustrated by disorganized and missing references to files and tools - don't buy this book.
> If you're new to design and don't understand textiles, I'm not sure you will be well-served by the presentation of the "Basics".
> If you buy this book, glean what you can and ignore the discouraging mediocrity.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!.......2004-08-02

Excellent Textile and Fashion Textbook
A must buy for anyone in the textile or fashion industries. Beginners will find all the info they need to begin a career in fashion textiles and advanced users of textile cad will find techniques to solve many fabric related issues of CAD design.

The book has been fantastic insight to using Photoshop as textile design software. The enclosed CD has many easy to follow examples that are outlined in the text and a second CD has a 30 day evaluation version of Photoshop.

The portfolio and resume tipsalone are well worth the $60!

5 out of 5 stars Clear, Helpful, Beautiful.......2007-06-01

Illustration Fashion: Concept to Creation appears to be popular with a wide range of students who are both beginners, intermediate students and advanced designers. This book offers a step-by-step approach to movement of designs from the croquis (base, working sketch) to the final copy. It has references to designs for facial and body features and it has detailed illustrations of a huge range of different pieces of clothings. Stipelman explains as well as gives examples of ways to successfully convey the mood of an outfit.

Overall - it's very handy. For advanced students, however, bear in mind that it would probably be more of a reference for you than anything. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a look at other books available here on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books for the subject.......2004-11-17

I found this book to be extremely helpful and useful, far superior than some I have encountered.

3 out of 5 stars Good beginner book but not the best for its price.......2004-06-29

I must admit that I am not too keen on this book. Although it doesn cover the basics of fashion illustration I just don't think its a great illustraton book. Its a great referance don;t get me wrong but I know for a fact that Bina Abling's Fashion Sketchbook (the most recent veersion) has a heck of alot more than this book and it may be a bit pricer (just buy it used!) but The Fahsion Skecthbook it well worth it. TRUST ME!

5 out of 5 stars Great 4 Beginners!!.......2003-08-08

I am intrested in fashion design and this book has helped me to learn how to draw the figure and face, etc. If you are a beginner in fashion design this should be your first book to get. This book is a keeper!!

4 out of 5 stars Insightful techniques and easy to grasp concepts.......2002-07-30

I did not realize how resourceful a book this was until I actually sat down and looked through it. I had this book and another fashion illustration book (by Kathryn Hagen) for six months and all this time, I was referencing the other book only to gain insignificant knowledge of fashion illustration. While the other book contains beautifully drawn illustrations, it did little to enlighten me to the techniques, which is important when learning.

I didn't look through Steven Stipelman's book before because I deemed it boring and uninteresting based on a brief flip through. When I actually sat down to start reading it, it all seemed to make sense. What Mr. Stipelman does that other books on this topic fail to really do is to talk about technique and concepts. He outlines standards for drawing croquis (working sketch) in steps, which is a must because a croquis is a foundation for fashion illustrations and will eventually lead to a final drawing.

He also applies the step by step explanation of how to do different poses and how clothing rests on the body in different ways. A big bonus is that he also provides a historical background wherever he can to each section because each period of time had its own ideal for "the" silhouette or body type. It really just ties in well because you get a broader understanding of fashion's past and its relation to the current ideals of fashion.

Whereas some fashion illustration books merely display pages of illustrations done by the author or professionals in the fashion industry, this book is written and arranged in such a way that you feel you're actually in the classroom being taught one-on-one all that it takes to illustrate fashion effectively and beautifully.
