Book Description

From the publisher of Under the Tuscan Sun comes another extraordinary memoir of a woman embarking on a new life this time in the South of France. Thirty years ago, James Beard Award-winning author Georgeanne Brennan set out to realize the dream of a peaceful, rural existence en Provence. She and her husband, with their young daughter in tow, bought a small farmhouse with a little land, and a few goats and pigs and so began a life-affirming journey. Filled with delicious recipes and local color, this evocative and passionate memoir describes her life cooking and living in the Proven al tradition an entrancing tale that will whet the appetite and the spirit perfect for foodies, Francophiles, or anyone who's dreamed of packing their bags and buying a ticket to the good life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful culinary journey.......2007-04-07

What an interesting, informative, and lovely culinary memoir! Georgeanne Brennan was a true trailblazer by going off to Provence with her family in the early 70's, at the height of the Vietnam War. This wasn't mere escapism--it was an attempt to get back to the land and learn what culinary traditions are all about (since most of those traditions in the U.S. were getting lost in the post-WWII industrialization of food production). Reading about the seasonal celebrations and ceremonies that are embedded in Provencal history is truly fascinating through the eyes of an American. Add to that a classic recipe at the end of each chapter that pertains to what you've just read preceeding it, and you have the perfect summer travel lit read!

    Book Description

In 1996, Craig Wilson began writing a column for USA Today called “The Final Word.” In it, he extolled the virtues of the true pleasures in life—clotheslines, freshly cut firewood, sweet corn, and Adirondack chairs—and looked back on his childhood in the country with fondness and an infectious sense of humor. Wilson’s message struck a nerve, and now he receives hundreds of letters and e-mails each week from readers who share his sense of nostalgia and appreciate his warm, thoughtful observations on daily life.

It’s the Little Things... showcases the best of “The Final Word,” with the pieces arranged by season. In fall, for example, Wilson remembers his mom’s Thanksgiving gravy and his crush on his first-grade teacher; in winter, he holds forth on aluminum Christmas trees and the kiddie table; in spring, he writes about the joys of walking to work and puttering in the garage; and in summer, his thoughts turn to white bucks, front porches, and outdoor showers. The result is a delightful book to share with others and to relish throughout the year.

3 out of 5 stars Another fan of Craig Wilson.......2005-10-25

I just love "It's the Little Things" and have enjoyed reading its columns over and over again. I have given more than 20 copies as gifts on various occasions. I recently heard Craig Wilson reading from his book and found him just as charming in person as on paper.

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Book of Life.......2005-09-01

If you are familiar with Craig Wilson's column in the newspaper, you are in for a treat. This is a nice compilation, arranged "seasonally" of thoughts on life, things you can even recognize of your own life and growing up. I thought I would savor these and read one or so a day, but once i started it, I couldn't put it down. You will laugh, think and maybe even cry, but you will never go away from a 'chapter' feeling nothing. Highly recommended, especially if you enjoy his columns. I wasn't aware he had such a compilation until he kindly replied to an e-mail I sent him saying I wished such were available.
    Relax and enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars "Only Memories Lingered...".......2005-07-23

A nice 'beach read' - somewhere between Dave Barry & Garrison Keillor.

Never too deep - and Wilson tends to use a stock of phrases, turns & expressions throughout his writing that allow one short story to flow right into the next -

I can see this as a weekly column - where the time between reading articles would be spaced out. Side-by-side, these stories sometimes read like revised versions of the story just before it in the book. Nothing too deep or original - just very well-rounded and nostalgic.

"Vicki's Funeral" is a standout for me from the entire collection.

As another reader put it - snuggle up and feel good with this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A Treasure of Pleasures........2003-04-12

I found myself laughing out loud and shouting YES! Oh my, Craig Wilson has finally put into words what makes one so happy in life. I LOVED the Sweet corn story. So much so, that I had to read it out loud to my husband. He laughed too. Probably because we can so relate to that one. And the Clothesline, Oh lord let me die face down in line dried sheets...lmao. Right on, hit the nail right on the head. The camping chapter will help me explain to my dear mother in law why I will NEVER be at the family reunion campout. Roughing it is a tub with no jacuzzi and that's as rough as I get. Hysterical laughter could be heard over the Italian vacation with mom. USA Today must thank Craig Wilson for my subscription. Reading his columns should be listed as one of the simple pleasures in life.

    5 out of 5 stars Little Things.......2003-01-26

Graig Wilson's work is an act of genius. In a society where all things are measure by their price tag, Craig Wilson appreciates the small things in life. He has been my favorite write for USA Today since day one, and I was excited to hear of his collection of columns. He is able to poke fun at things, and be serious. His writing style is wonderful. His view of life is simple, and wonderful. Everyone should read this book, and appreciate the simple things of life!

The title Morning Sun on a White Piano conjures a treacly torrent of horrifying associations--pianists Ferrante and Teicher, generic greeting cards, the collected B-sides of Karen Carpenter--but it's actually a terrific book. Dr. Robin R. Meyers has put together an implicitly but thoroughly Christian guide to the sacramental pleasures of everyday activities such as cooking and pet ownership. Meyers writes in a lapidary, spare style that invites comparison with the best contemporary books on spirituality. Morning Sun on a White Piano is The Miracle of Mindfulness for middle-class Christians.

    Book Description

There's a lot of talk these days about slowing down, simplifying, living in the moment, but it isn't really happening. We all talk the talk, but the walk we walk seems to be getting faster and faster, and we seem to be enjoying it less and less. Our problem is that, in search of life, we pass it by.

Morning Sun on a White Piano is the perfect tonic for the freneticism of contemporary life. In twelve lucid, straightforward essays, Dr. Robin Meyers offers a brilliant guide to achieving the simple and sacramental life by recognizing what is holy in the seemingly insignificant details of everyday life: Books. Music. Letters. Children.

Morning Sun on a White Piano is a book about finding joy in the present, about reclaiming the lost art of living, hearing again, in a culture that has gone deaf; seeing again, in a culture that's blinded; and feeling again, in a culture that overstimulates and numbs itself. If simplifying our lives means singing the song, Morning Sun on a White Piano challenges us to learn the dance.

Compact, accessible, gorgeously written, and beautifully designed, here is a book that is a perfect gift for anyone--especially ourselves.

4 out of 5 stars Simplicity with a big message.......2006-01-16

A friend of mine brought a copy of this book to me, out of the blue, and said I think you might enjoy reading this!! It is small and simple to read so I did just that and liked it so much that I ordered my own copy after returning hers.
If you wonder just what is going on in the world and what is normal or right this is the book that will help you keep things in perspective. Simple things that have big impact on our life and the world. It's power is in it's simplicity. A small bite of comfort in an era of insanity..

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new here..........2004-11-29

Something to pass the time on an airplane trip. Simple-minded and non-threatening, and not very insightful - more like a series of "newer" Reader's Digest articles.

1 out of 5 stars Sentimental But Biblically Inaccurate........2004-11-24

Dr. Meyers claims that the lesson in the Tower of Babel is that when language fails human co-operation is impossible. This is not the lesson of Babel. The lesson is that man cannot reach God by their own efforts.

Biblical inaccuracy ruins an otherwise nice sentimental book.

5 out of 5 stars Simple wisdom for real people.......2002-06-28

It didn't take me long at all to read this small book of twelve vignettes on the simple pleasures of life. Although it is true that there's not a lot in here that you won't have heard before, I stand by the idea that the best books are the ones that remind you of what you already know. In places I found it a little cliché, especially the first couple of chapters which reiterated the old "turn off the TV, have more conversations, read more books" wisdom. But it improved as it went along, and it was the last four chapters - discussing mercy, faith, freedom, cooking, creating, the joy of anticipation and the art of hoping - which made me give this book five stars rather than four.

This is not one of those cheesy gift books that contain 50 half-pages of "bite-sized wisdom" and 70 generic photos of flowers, babies and rainbows. Nor is it a specifically Christian version of other books such as 'Life's Little Instruction Book'. It is simply a book of short, thoughtful essays which help us to stop and examine our values and our idea of what will really make us happy. I foresee myself reading this many times throughout my life.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful presentation of the ordinary made extraordinary.......2001-01-06

In "Morning Sun on a White Piano", UCC minister and professor Dr. Robin Meyers presents twelve essays, geared to refocus his audience on the truly important things in life.

Although these revelations are not terribly new or extraordinary, what *is* extraordinary is their simple, beautiful presentation, the wide breadth of ideas he manages to express, and his ability to connect to his audience without being preachy, sanctimonious, or condescending. Especially noticeable is the "Not Wolf" story, and his essay on the importance of mercy.

This book is very refreshing and readable, the equivalent in book form of a five-minute shoulder massage, or a cup of tea on a rainy day. I recommend it highly.

In cooking, says chef Alfred Portale, simple pleasures are "satisfying dishes that are relatively, and often surprisingly, easy to cook." His Alfred Portale Simple Pleasures offers 125 recipes for a wide range of such fare, derived from his acclaimed Manhattan restaurant, Gotham Bar and Grill, with other favorites added to the mix. The dishes, which reflect Portale's ability to meld the sophisticated and earthy, couldn't be more attractive. In wideranging chapters, which include "Small Plates" and "Soups, Sandwiches, and Pizzas," Portale offers the likes of Spicy Shrimp Salad with Mango, Avocado, and Lime Vinaigrette; Pizza with Roasted Chiles, Manchego, and Scallions; Duck Vindaloo; and Roasted Monkfish with Green Peppercorn Sauce. Included also are useful variations, as well as "flavor building" advice--you can amp up that monkfish, for example, with the addition of cremini mushrooms, shallots, and garlic butter. Though the recipes require no special ingredients, many of the formulas are, as Portale hints, best kept for times when the cook isn't hurried. The reward of pursuing Portale's approach also yields desserts like Lime Meringue Tarts, Chocolate Grand Marnier Cake, and Summer Plum Pudding. Simple Pleasures also offers color photos plus a helpfully illustrated ingredient glossary. --Arthur Boehm

    Book Description

When you imagine the quintessential New York City restaurant, one name comes to mind: Alfred Portale's Gotham Bar and Grill. The same is true when you think of the top American restaurants:Gotham has been one of our most cherished culinary institutions for two decades.

Led by executive chef and co-owner Alfred Portale, Gotham has been honored with four consecutive New York Times three-star reviews and has resided among the Zagat Survey's top five New York City restaurants for more than ten years. Known for Portale's defining modern American cooking, impeccable service, and soaring space, Gotham was recently named "Most Outstanding Restaurant" in the nation by the James Beard Foundation.

But what does Portale cook when he's not working? In Alfred Portale Simple Pleasures, one of our most accomplished chefs invites you to taste the sublime and surprisingly easy-to-prepare, restaurant-quality dishes he serves to friends and family at home.

The 125 recipes include home versions of Gotham classics as well as new recipes straight from Portale's home kitchen. They're all simple enough for any home cook, and spectacular enough to impress anyone who tastes them.

At the center of Alfred Portale Simple Pleasures are elemental main courses such as Roast Cod with a New England Chowder Sauce, Filet Mignon with Madeira Sauce, and Sautéed Chicken Breasts with Button Mushrooms and Sage. Pick one, then build a meal by pairing it with recipes from the chapters of salads, starters, and small plates; soups, sandwiches, and pizzas; pasta and risotto; side dishes; and desserts.

Along with the recipes, Portale offers pairing suggestions for building a menu, variations for adapting recipes according to season and personal taste, and flavor-building instructions on how to accent a dish with extravagant extras such as caviar or everyday additions such as flavored oils. In other words, home cooks will learn how to add a Gotham-inspired twist to their own favorite recipes.

The supermarket-friendly dishes include modern classics such as Spicy Shrimp Salad with Mango, Avocado, and Lime Vinaigrette; Pumpkin and Caramelized Onion Soup with Gruyère and Sage; and Sautéed Spinach with Garlic, Ginger, and Sesame Oil. Alfred helps you transform everything from ordinary weekday lunches to Saturday night dinner parties into anything but ordinary.

Of course, no meal is complete without dessert, and Portale delivers sweet and sophisticated send-offs, including Lime Meringue Tarts, a simple Summer Plum Pudding, and an elegant Chocolate-Grand Marnier Cake.

Alfred Portale Simple Pleasures -- nothing could be simpler or more pleasurable.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite cookbooks...simply outstanding!.......2006-11-22

I own a large number of cookbooks, and this wonderful book by Alfred Portale is one of my favorites. The recipes are creative yet relatively simple and easy to follow. In particular, he is an absolute master with seafood. Recipes such as "Asian Stripped Bass en Papillote", "Lime and Butter-Braised Fluke (or Sole)", and "Roasted Halibut with Lemon-Caper Butter" have all become favorites in our home. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Examples of Modern Cooking.......2006-04-16

The book is called Simple Pleasures not Simple Cooking !!

If you want to set your tastebuds alight, then go through some of the recipes in this book.

Sure it isn't a book of simplistic recipes, of how to make your evening meal in 30 minutes or less, but that isn't what you buy this book for.

If you want a book that shows you the recipes and thinking of one of the best modern American chefs, then you buy this book.

Having gone through the book, I think that this will be one of the cookbooks that I will use the most.

On a par with Bistro Cooking at Home by Gordon Hamersley, and Cooking One on One by John Ash.

Some of the best of modern American cooking is contained in these pages.

4 out of 5 stars love the restaurant, love the book!.......2005-11-11

Interesting info also given with some delicious recipes. Not for the "Semi-homemade" kind of cook. No gourmet ingredients necessary; truffle oil is readily available in most supermarkets.

2 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you........2005-09-04

The recipes in this cookbook aren't simple, nor would I call this "home cooking." The ingredients required for some of these recipes are diverse and very, very gourmet-oriented. Truffle oil is often mentioned, for example. This is not to say that the recipes are bad, but if you're looking for easy, simple recipes, this is not the book to be buying.

It would appear that the idea underlying Simple Vegetarian Pleasures is vegetarian food that doesn't require a great deal of labor to deliver big flavors--"simple" as in "not too much trouble." Lemlin also alludes to the simplicity movement, where simple means cutting back to what's really important, gaining both time and quality of life. If one has actually embraced the simplicity movement and has the time and ambience, it remains unclear why there's so little time available to give to the preparation and eating of food, one of the more important elements of daily life.

Ignoring all the simplicity stuff, however, leaves the cook with a cookbook filled with recipes pulling on the flavors of all corners of the world. Fill your pantry according to the master plan, shop wisely, plan ahead, and have at it. This is vegetarian cooking of a sophisticated kitchen and palate (using "sophisticated" in the title would presumably scare off anyone not inclined to struggle with food). Many of the recipes could fall out of cookbooks of various ethnic origins where a mainly vegetarian diet is the rule rather than the exception.

What this book really helps us do is move beyond the notion of vegetarianism as just so much brown rice, ragg socks, hairy legs, and save the whales. That is, Simple Vegetarian Pleasures moves right to the heart of cuisine, of food with soul, and makes the absence of meat an insignificant thing. It's that simple.

Ultimately, that it is simple, and that it is vegetarian, means a lot less than that it is exceedingly pleasurable. Enjoy these lush recipes. --Schuyler Ingle

Strapped for ideas, though, I started making some of them, and I've been so shocked at how well they turned out. They've been delicious and flavorful and relatively simple. True, the short list of ingredients means you should splurge and buy the best since those are the ones you'll be tasting, which is not good for me because I just got out of college, but all-in-all it's been a money-saver and I'm always impressed by the results. The only bad experiences have been the ones where I substituted ingredients. Try the butternut squash soup, which is just like Jeanne Lemlin says: sunshine in a bowl. Many of the dishes also work well as leftovers. I definitely recommend it to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.

    4 out of 5 stars Everyday favorites.......2004-08-09

One of my favorite vegetarian cookbooks. Nothing fancy, but lots of reliable everyday meals and a few real gems. My favorites are the black bean chili (meat eaters don't realize it's veggie) and the triple rice salad (beautiful and perfect for the holidays). I've given this book as a gift to at least 3 others--none are vegetarians, but they all love this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Gems!.......2003-08-17

Our family stopped eating meat about 10 years ago. (There were so many reasons---health, humaneness, environmental concerns---but I'm probably preaching to the converted here.) My wife has a shelf full of cookbooks, but whenever a meal turns out to be especially delicious and interesting, it's usually from one of Jeanne Lemlin's books. I can't recommend them highly enough!

5 out of 5 stars Really easy - Really Great for those who like quality food.......2003-05-09

This book is great for making really tasty food that just happens to be meatless. It is all elegant enough for company, but easy enough for a monday night. I am especially fond of the white beans and tomatoes. I would highly reccomend this cookbook for those who like to use canned beans and veggies in their meals. These dishes certainly don't taste like you did though! It's my favorite veggie cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars These recipes are true vegetarian pleasures!.......2001-09-28

I have had this book for over three years and I have yet to cook a bad recipe from it! I am not a vegetarian, just someone who likes to offer her family non meat alternatives a few nights a week. Most of the pages are worn and stained. And I find myself coming back to this book over and over again. Even my "carnivore" husband loves the recipes from this book. I especially love the long list of menu suggestions at the end of the book. It is yet another dimension that makes this book stand out from all the other vegetarian cookbooks out there.

Simple Pleasures of the Garden is a follow-up to the very popular Simple Pleasures; Susannah Seton was inspired to write it because so many of the suggestions, stories, and recipes from the earlier book were about gardens and gardening. Organized by season, each section contains subheadings under which information is organized: "In the Garden," "With Family and Friends," "Into the Kitchen," "Beautifying Your Home," and "Nourishing Body and Soul." Seton's approach is thorough. She offers tips and stories on herb gardening, information on growing flowers for aroma or to attract butterflies, techniques for toxic-free gardening and composting, and instructions for making simple baskets and wreaths, floral-scented oils and lotions, and potpourri. Her advice doesn't neglect the palate, either: you'll find delightful, simple recipes for cooked vegetables, salads, blackberry jam, rhubarb-strawberry crisp, and many more. It is a delight to browse through Simple Pleasures of the Garden and fantasize, but the danger is that you will want to jump into your own gardening projects. Not to worry, though, beginning gardeners and those with almost no space will find plenty of guidance, including many indoor gardening projects. Just browsing through this book will probably lower your blood pressure.

As a vegetarian and "picky owner" of a number of vegetarian cookbooks, I thought "I had seen it all." This book features delicious recipes and lovely colorful photographs which let you "eat with your eyes first," as well as useful nutritional information.
