I checked this out at the library and after looking at it closely knew that I needed my own copy. I don't have a lot of experience with other wire work jewelry books, but I could see instantly that this one is a prize. Great ideas and they are beautifully shown and described.

5 out of 5 stars Great Foundation Excellent Presentation.......2007-07-15

Good bones, that's what this book gave me. It was my first or second and what a good model to imprint on.
Clear, comprehensive, it established good practice that has served me well.
I am apart from it and returned to its words and images in my mind.

If you already know the basics and have an esthetic vision, this may be old news. If you are a beginner, then this should be part of your canon.

The tone, comfortable, practical and the projects are well paced.

It's now old and the field is crowded with both imitators and those reaching beyond this. It remains solid and nourishing. Thank you Helen Clegg for your good thoughts and inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars Wire Jewelry Projects.......2007-03-17

An excellent book for the beginner or intermediate wire jewelry maker. Beautful pictures of the finished piece and step by step instructions including "templates" to compare your wire pieces as you progress.

4 out of 5 stars Wired, wire and more wire.......2007-03-01

This is going to be one that is passed around, copied and talked about for years to come. Yes it is a beginners book, but don't let that stop you from getting this one to add to the shelf near the bench for ready reference. It has nice larger black line drawings showing clear step by step drawing of each move. It doesn't require purchase of a lot of tools, that most will have in the house. The material can be simple electrical wire that you have stripped the covering off to start with. Or leave the plastic covering on for colored work.
The pictures of the finished items are bright and clear. The projects are more for daily wear and some for fancy dress up. You will find the needed info to make any jigs for the component making. I am partial to what they now call Egyptian coils or Celtic twist/coils of copper bare wire.
If you have moved on from simple wire work with only connections made of the wire work. You will find this book a shot in the creative arm. I own this one and enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have for your wirewrapping/jewerly making.......2005-06-06

This is really a must have book for your library of wirewrapping, jewerly making and polymer clay.I really find myself referring to it a lot when I need insperation in beginning new projects..Im not one to follow step by step.but this can be followed very easily, but its good for just adding here and there to what your making.Thats why I like the patterns.Mrs.C

2 out of 5 stars Making Wire Jewelry.......2003-08-15

Younger wire makers will appreciate this book. The patterns are simple and use only wire in repeated designs joined together. The ring section is very simple and is only for someone just starting out in wire. Do not purchase this item if you have any expierence in wire jewelry--only if just starting out.

Book Description

Jewelry making is one of the most popular craft trends, and its audience continues to grow. Few jewelry books on the market emphasize the importance of the design relationship between beads, wire, and jewelry findings—the “nuts and bolts” of any piece. This book will show not only how to design and build your own spectacular jewelry out of beads and wire but how to design and create your own findings as well.

Most jewelry making books are geared for the beginner and provide little information for intermediate to advanced jewelry makers. Making Designer Bead and Wire Jewelry contains illustrated how-to techniques, full-color project photos, project instructions, and numerous tips that enhance the styles and skills presented. Intermediate and advanced jewelry makers will learn new techniques for creating signature elements for their designs, while beginners will get a handle on honing their skills.

4 out of 5 stars A good guide.......2007-07-25

I bought this book as a gift for my mother. She has found it useful, easy to understand. It is full of photographs and illustrations of all the procedures and so it is very "user friendly".

3 out of 5 stars Dressed-up beginner's book ...'Bead on a Wire' recommended instead........2007-06-08

I was disappointed with this book because it had the same info with less design ideas, as 'Bead on a Wire' by Sharilyn Miller. To be fair, if I had bought this book first, instead of vice-a-versa, I might not have felt as let down as I was; but, I don't think so...
All the wire designs seem to be based on one theme--the two, three or four 'Loop Eye' headpin, and how to string beads.
The book should have BEGINNER'S somewhere on the front cover. If you have already have a book listing the basic tools & techniques, you don't need this one.

3 out of 5 stars nothing exicting.......2007-05-01

I enjoy reading beadwork books and have over 100 books. Most of them are Japanese, Korean and Chinese bead books, which mainly focus on stringing and are quite different from the beadwork in US. Then I was thinking to read more about wirework books and decided to get some from Amazon...

After reading the previous reviews, I thought this one might be good... But I must say that it is very disappointing... The instruction is OK and somewhat too simple and you can find similar info via internet...

The projects and the gallery are not exciting at all. (If you look closer at the pictures, the quality of some projects are really lousy.)... Many commercial online bead suppliers have much better design gallery... Another complaint is the instruction drawing. It seems there isn't a consistency to show the dominant hand and non-dominant hand ( which is important to use the tool , I think...)

If you are a very beginner, probably the best wirework book you should consider is "All wired up" by Mark Lareau. If you like step-by-step photography, I think "Getting Started Making Wire Jewelry and More " by Linda Chandler and Christine R. Ritchey is a good pick.

I would not purchase this book if I wasn't too lazy to check it out at a local Michael's.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2007-02-10

Very good for anyone wanting to work with wire but might have been a little afraid. I am a beginner and it is awesome in its details and drawings for making findings and jewelry. I like all the practical jewelry pieces shown as well and have already made some of them.

Filigree is easier than it looks--with help from Silver Threads

    * 12 beautiful "you made this?" projects
    * Step-by-step instructions and photos introduce the basics and more advanced techniques

For thousands of years, cultures around the world have made filigree: delicate jewelry, decorative objects, even furniture. The intricate curls and twists mislead people into thinking that filigree is difficult to make--but it's much easier than it looks, with help from Silver Threads. This book demystifies the process of creating filigree jewelry. First, basic silverworking techniques are paired with an overview of tools and materials. Then readers learn to make simple filigree shapes, used in 12 stunning projects ranging from simple pendants and earrings to more complex necklaces with gemstone settings. Detailed instructions, illustrations, and full-color photos guide readers through the learning process--and into planning and creating their own unique filigree designs.

Book is both well writen and well illustrate. Directions for making various items are clear and easily understandable. Also includes locations for purchasing supplies and materials.
Good beginning book for using twisted wire.

5 out of 5 stars Make lace with wire!.......2007-07-01

Jeanne Rhodes-Moen does a terrific job of explaining the steps to making filigree jewelry, breaking them down and de-mystifying them in the process. Even her introduction soothes worries. Filigree was the first jewelry she made; she says she "didn't know filigree was supposed to be difficult."

There's plenty of eye candy here; photos are large, clear and abundant. Eye candy isn't what the book is about, though. Be sure to read the Basics and Tools and Supplies sections thoroughly. In them, you'll find detailed instructions of skills needed for successful filigree. Make some of your own, specialized tools, like a wire-measuring tool that's invaluable for speedily measuring lots of short lengths of wire. Rhodes-Moen shows you how to make your own filigree wire and even gives a diagram of a convenient workbench setup. The Shaping and Polishing section covers more necessities, and breaks those intricate filigree patterns down into their basic components.

As I expected, the projects were mostly pendants with earrings, a ring and a couple of necklaces thrown in. The last section even points you toward creating your own, beautiful designs. What a terrific resource!

    5 out of 5 stars Silver Threads.......2007-05-13

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-03-03

I am an advanced wire worker but really only an intermediate at best solderer so I was a little nervous, but after getting this book yesterday I made one of the projects and it was so EASY! And so QUICK! Couldn't get over it, and now I have a beautiful silver filigree and amber pendant, made in under an hour.
I cheated as well: filigree wire is next to impossible to find here in Australia so I used my ordinary twisted square wire from wire working (21 gauge) and it came out just beautiful.

Award-winning fiber artist Mary Hettmansperger reveals the secrets of using traditional basketry techniques to create 28 striking pieces of jewelry. It's a new and exciting approach that yields remarkable results--even for beginners. She covers four basic procedures--plaiting, knotting, looping, and twining--and incorporates materials such as copper, colorful wire, natural fibers, even bottle tops and bark. The array of projects includes soft-fiber necklaces as well as one made from looped linen over a forged silver mold: small retro pins, bright and colorful in twined pattern shaped; and a variety of pieces made from wire twisted with beads. There's no other book like it, and it's sure to appeal to a diverse range of crafters.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars New way of thinking.............2007-08-27

I am primarily a jewelry artist, and wanted to incorporate weaving techniques into my work. This book is amazing! I was fortunate enough to be able to take a class from Mary, and found that the illustrations and directions made for perfect "notes" from the class. Don't be intimidated by the techniques..... they're very simple and easy to follow. The trick is to practice the technique and then determine how to incorporate it into YOUR work with your imagination! LOVE the book!

4 out of 5 stars A really eclectic selection of materials.......2007-07-12

Before I read this book, I had not considered how basketry techniques and materials might be applied to jewelry. Wire, metal sheets, paper and found objects are also used. Very good illustrations and a nice selection of projects. This book really expanded my horizons.

4 out of 5 stars Inspires to using new techniques.......2007-06-12

I bought this book after having it recommended to me. And I'm not disappointed. To be true, it was not exactly what I thought it would be. But I did enjoy it. I've learnt many new techniques and enjoy the mix of metal and fiber.

Somewhat more than half the project use fiber, including raffia and black ash etc, and the rest wire. The projects, in my opinion, are not as interesting as the techniques used. To me this is a book on techniques, not on designs. I most probably won't try any of the specific projects in the book. Although they are fairly good examples of what can be made in the line of woven jewelry. There is also a good mix of styles being used so while some projects feel a bit similar, there's still enough variation to show different ways of using the same technique.

But the lack of inspirational designs in the project part is compensated by the great gallery in the end of the book. Approximatly 15 metal wire and 12 fiber projects are featured. And as the main part of the book inspires the use of textile techniques, the gallery gives inspiration in the process of going from technique to an actual piece of jewelry. And hopefully also in the process of finding your own style.

4 out of 5 stars You'll have to use your imagination.......2007-06-08

The photo on the cover of this book is beautiful. I am searching for innovative techniques to incorporate into my textile designs and art quilts. I'm not at all interested in the specific projects illustrated in the book, however I was inspired by some of the techniqes. If you are an artist who likes to work in mixed media, then this book will serve you well. If you're coming to the table with your own sense of curiousity & adventure and you just need to see some fresh takes...This book will get the creative juices flowing.

2 out of 5 stars Not like the rest.......2007-09-18

I'm really surprised to see how many positive reviews this book has gathered. Due to this I ordered my own copy as well as Bead on A Wire by Sharilyn Miller. The two can't even begin to be compared but I'll try. All Wired Up just lacks in good photos to show techniques, the drawings are small. There are only about 5 glossy pictures at the end of the book for inspiration pieces but none for projects. I'm very disappointed in this book. However Bead on A Wire is an exceptional teaching and inspiring book, with enlarged, color photos of every aspect of learning to work with wire. The projects are just beautiful and doable. I'm a beginner but sure Sharilyn Miller's book can accomodate all levels. So glad I purchased this and will return All Wired Up.

4 out of 5 stars All Wired Up.......2007-07-27

I like this book. The author put a lot of work into making the instructions as clear as possible. I like the way he starts with the basics which allows for practice and then goes into more complicated projects (but always referring back to the basics when appropriate).

    4 out of 5 stars A wonderful beginning..........2007-07-01

Lareau's engaging, clear writing coupled with varied projects can give the beginner a solid start in wire work. It covers basic wire techniques, wraps (donut, bead and cabochon), cages, and findings (bails, headpins, ear wires, clasps). His book shows techniques through line-art drawings and has little in the way of eye candy until the gallery at the end.

4 out of 5 stars great learning tool.......2007-05-13

very easy to understand directions for the beginner. I would highly recommend this book for wire wrapping!

    4 out of 5 stars Basic+.......2007-05-09

This is a very good book for teaching the basics of wire working and it is well written. The items covered are very common and are the foundation for most beaders today. The gallery is inspiring enough to send the reader on to bigger and better things.

I have been making wirework jewellry for the last year and still found 6 projects on my first flick through that I am going to make. This is rare as I normally only find one maybe two that interest me. Good for all levels with project ranging from beginner to advanced.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Ideas for Wire Jewelry.......2007-08-14

This book contains many easy to complete projects with a ton of inspiring ideas for jewelry creations.

I am just getting into wire working and this book is terrific.

    2 out of 5 stars disapointed.......2007-07-20

If i had looked at this book before buying it, I definatly wouldn't of bought it. The instructions were very brief and hard to understand. There was plenty of empty space for the author to put in step by step diagrams, buut there wasn't any. The projects weren't that nice either. In the whole book I only made about 2 of them. there are a lot better free wireworking projects on the wigjig website

2 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped for.......2007-05-14

I really liked the piece on the cover and assumed that all the pieces in the book would follow in the same vein and I was sorely disappointed when the book arrived and the projects are kinda crappy. There are a couple of things worth making but they didn't make the purchase worth the cost of the book. The how to part of the book isn't very good either. Explanations assume that the reader knows how to do things and there are very few pictures showing processes. Luckily I know what I'm doing!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2007-05-13

This is a great book for all levels of crafters. It has easy to follow instructions and great detailed pictures. The projects included in this book are very stlyish. I am extremely pleased with the purchase of Bead & Wire Art Jewelry.

    Book Description

Those with interest, but absolutely no wire-working knowledge, will find this gradual guide a great introduction to every aspect of working with the enduring medium of wire. The chapters walk the aspiring craftsperson step-by-step through the entire process, from where and how to shop for wire and beads, to choosing the right kind and gauge of wire, and what tools of the trade they need to borrow or buy. No background is assumed; skills build upon each other as the book progresses. The basic jewelry components, such as loops, jump rings, findings, and connectors, are covered in turn. These lessons are then put to use with a selection of six projects, from jewelry to more unusual uses for metal embellishments such as greeting cards. Filled with lessons, tips, and resources from start to finish, this manual is a primer for the true beginner.

This book was an excellent guide to making jewelry with great instructions. I am new to jewelry making and I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This book ROCKS!.......2007-08-19

I have been making and selling (a lot) of jewelry for the past year, however, I have yet to be able to learn how to make anything with wire. I've bought those useless "wigjigs", countless magazines, looked up instructions online but have been able to make not one thing.

I was in the bookstore looking for ideas for beaded necklaces and I picked up this book. I immediately purchased it and within ten minutes of reviewing it, I made wire coils, my own toggle clasp, a pair of wire earrings and french wire earring hooks!

The problem with most books I have found are:
They give you diagrams, but if there are six steps, you get diagrams for steps 2, 4 and 6 and they leave out 1,3 and 5.

Or, you get one view when realistically you need three dimensional views in order to do what they are describing correctly.

This book gives you many different views so you can see the front, back and side of what you are trying to make. I would recommend this book to ANYONE that wants to make wire jewelry. You learn SO quick and I just cannot believe i've waited a year and a half when I could have had this book and been doing it all along!

It's not a wealth of designs or ideas, however, it gives you the basic foundation of wire work and the most common wire techniques which allows you to branch off on your own and be able to design things yourself while also being able to NOW understand instructions in magazines or online because you can do the basics.

Wonderful book....2 days service not to mention FREE S&H. Will never buy a book anywhere else!

    4 out of 5 stars Cool beginner's Book.......2007-07-12

The process is explained very well. It provides a great understanding of all the elements involved (tools, beads, wires). It's a keeper.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations.......2007-04-29

This book covers all the basics and then some. I am taking wire classes as well and still found this book useful. The descriptions are good and the illustrations leave little room for error. I recommend this to any person who has the jewelry 'bug' and doesnt want to stop with just stringing beads!

3 out of 5 stars Not sold on this book.......2007-09-29

Annie is a great designer whose knit patterns I've come to love, so thought I'd give this book a try as well. Although the photography is second to none and inspiring the patterns, for me, lacked indepth directions. They need to be more complete. I also feel that its the basic same pattern over and over just extended to a greater width and more beads with slight variations, primarily cuff/choker designs. Actually the pieces look uncomfortable to wear.

    4 out of 5 stars I like this one..........2007-07-05

For as long as I have crocheted, I never really considered doing jewelry until lately when I started doing kumihimo braiding. As in many crochet books, patterns are recycled and predictable. But I have to say this book has provided me with a reason to rethink and maybe give the craft a try. The explanations and directions are not over explained, the photography is lovely and the designs inspiring. You shouldn't use this book to learn to crochet, have a better than beginner understanding of how to knit or crochet and doing a little research at your local bead store (we have some great ones here in DC) and handling some tools at the local hardware shop (not all needle-nose pliers are equal) wouldn't hurt either.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, great inspiration and instruction.......2007-07-03

There are some really nice designs in this book, and just a few which are a little over the top that I probably will never make. Most of them are quite 'wearable'. The book is filled with amazing photography where you can clearly see the details of the wire pieces.

Plus, there are great chapters on how to knit with wire, and how to crochet with wire--very informative. The book is made up of the following chapters:
    Necklaces
    Bracelets
    Sets
    Earrings and Pins
    Knitting with wire
    Crocheting with wire
    Finishing wire pieces
Resources (great recommendations on where and what to buy)

If you like this book, you might also look at "Wire Jewelry" by Kate Pullen. Very similar subject matter, but completely different designs.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to start.......2007-06-14

This book has beautiful projects to make. The instructions are fairly simple and helpful. Though there are some areas where I wish that they had better pictures to explain, I did find that the descriptions are pretty accurate (especially when telling you what the wire should feel like and how you should feel like you are over-exaggerating your movements). I highly recommend this book to a beginner, but even more so for an intermediate wire-knitter who just wants to be inspired by some beautiful projects.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-07

There weren't dozens of products. There were several errors in patterns. And these are expensive little things to make.
