Book Description

A new step-by-step guide to the most popular form of Celtic design.

Celtic knotwork is the single most widely appealing form within the rich repertoire of Celtic design. Aidan Meehan's new book provides step-by-step instruction for anyone who wants to master the traditional methods of freehand Celtic knot design and then progress to designing fresh knotwork patterns and variations.

First, Meehan carefully and clearly explains how to draw the basic knot. Once that technique has been mastered, Meehan shows how to create designs with more complex knots, and how to draw border layouts. The book takes you through every step of the process, and exercises at the end of each unit ensure that you have mastered the techniques before you proceed to the next stage. 2843 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Much easier than the Bain books.......2006-09-03

I had a few books by George and Ian Bain but could never figure out what they were trying to get at. This book finally broke it down in a way I could understand. Now that I know the basic technique, I have expanded to all sorts of interesting knots. I can also go back to my Bain books and figure out where the break lines are so I can reproduce those knots without driving myself crazy.

I agree with the other reviewers that at first the system seems a bit complicated, but the break-line and center-line drawing methods in this book have made it really easy for me to freehand knots on anything. I like not being a slave to clip art or stencils. I've gone to those pottery painting places and just plopped a gridwork of dots out and then penciled out my outline on uneven or unusual shapes. When I'm in meetings, I doodle knots on scratch paper.

I gave the book four stars instead of five because I bailed out after 2/3 of the book, when it got to making corners, 3-cord and 5-cord plaits. After I understood the basic method, I figured out how to turn corners all by myself. The 3-cord and 5-cord plaits aren't as interesting to me because they can't be used in standalone knots. Also, Meehan tends to document every single variation on a knot even if it's not very pretty.

I definitely recommend this as a way to train your brain. I am hoping to find a similar book that makes it easier to do triangular and circular knots.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful book.......2006-01-27

Agree with the reviewer below; the construction methods can seem a bit complex. But this ain't clip art, and the meditation needed to grasp the framework is part of why we're doing this particular form of art in the first place, no?

Even as a straightforward source of material to adapt to your own artwork (I work at a scale of roughly 1/4" to 1'), it's rich. I love the pages of permutations.

I think this is my third favorite Meehan (fils?) book, after Knots and Spirals.

4 out of 5 stars Knot that difficult.......2003-05-21

In a day when computer programs can generate knotwork and clip-art sources for Celtic art abound, it is refreshing to see a new and serious effort being made to train the hand, eye and mind in the skill and understanding of this art form. The technique is interesting in an historical sense because it shows how human hands could accomplish 'the work of angels' and it is also of great value to the modern hand-craftsman who wishes to continue in this tradition. The method of knotwork construction that Meehan teaches is remarkable for a reason that the author only casually mentions. This is that the layout marks are absorbed into the finish piece. An artist working in permanent ink, as did the medieval scribes who illuminated such masterpieces as the Book of Kells, after they have mastered the technique, can draw complicated knots without erasing or leaving messy layout marks. The book begins with a series of three grids, illustrated by dots and lines. These are necessary to illustrate the system, but unfortunately may give the reader the impression that the system is overwrought. Perhaps the author says a bit more than is needed at first, because the system is pretty easy to use once you understand it. In fact, by thoroughly illustrating the simplest knots in relationship to the grids in the first lessons, Meehan is making it possible (if the student perseveres) to layout more complicated knots with an economy of effort and ink. I highly recommend the book, but with the caution that the first lessons require patience. Had he cut to the chase without quite so much preliminary analysis I would gladly give it 5 stars. 5 out of 5 stars Not just a bunch of patterns.......2007-03-09

This book is an excellent tool for learning how to create original designs. It leads the reader through the knotwork process step-by-step instead of giving a collection of knotwork designs for the reader to copy. I was most impressed by one of the final sections, which describes and illustrates how to embellish your knotwork designs with zoomorphics, or animal shapes integrated into the design.

5 out of 5 stars Create your own original Celtic knotwork design.......2003-06-10

This book is for people who would like to be able to design Celtic knotwork for quilling, parchment craft, woodcarving, painting, counted cross-stitch, or needlepoint (to name a few examples). It allows you to design beautiful frames, invitations, carved boxes, greeting cards, pillows--let your imagination run wild! I used this book to design watercolor frames.

The author divided up her chapters according to the knotwork design's basic construction unit, e.g. small loops, hearts, fish, corner motifs, etc. There is also a chapter on "Creating Your Own Designs" and one on "Using Knotwork Designs in Other Crafts."

All of the illustrated patterns are based on angles of 45, 90, and 180 degrees and are plotted on a dotted grid, which makes them fairly easy to resize and replicate on graph paper. All you need in addition to the graph paper is a pencil and the ability to find a quiet spot and concentrate on your design.

The many colored illustrations are beautiful, and the knotwork diagrams are easy to follow if you give them the attention they deserve! The author has also written a handbook on Celtic knotwork, and one entitled "Celtic Spirals and Other Designs."

5 out of 5 stars The queen of hearts...........2002-07-20

CELTIC KNOTWORK DESIGNS by Sheila Sturrock is a nifty little book. As complex as the Celtic knots appear, it all comes down to this, they can be reduced to curved and straight lines, the most important combination being the "small hearts". Sturrock says there are four basic hearts and she provides examples of each displayed against a grid. Almost anyone can create the grid as it consists of lines of dots applied with a ruler. These dots are then used as the basis for organizing the hearts, parts of hearts and straight lines that makeup the most complex design. The only other thing you need to study are the anima elements in the zoomorphic designs that also are based on hearts, parts of hearts and lines.

One needs the following for making Celtic knotwork: the materials listed by Sturrock, patience, imagination. Not everyone may be a gifted needleworker, but those willing to work at it will be able to master this straightforward art. I am using this book to instruct young girls.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed and Easy to follow.......2002-07-16

If you want to learn to draw Celtic knotwork, you need this book. It explains in detail and excellently detailed color diagrams how to plot the points for many different kinds of knotwork. From simple two-strand braids all the way up to interwoven animals, it is simply gorgeous and comeletely easy to understand. I can barely draw a straight line, yet I can use this book to create intricate designs for t-shirts, jewelry, embroidery and more. I've even had a couple friends who are tattoo artists borrow it to improve their techniques.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner's Book.......2001-10-25

After wrestling with the venerable George Bain, I turned to this book to get a handle on Celtic knotwork. Sheila Sturrock breaks down the framework of knots into simple, basic shapes, allowing the reader to start making decorative knots within minutes of picking up the book. It proved to be a good starting point for me.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource for artists!.......2004-08-07

I'm a long time fan of Courtney Davis' celtic art books and this book is even better than I expected it to be.

The designs are from carvings, manuscripts, metalwork and other sources. They are easily adaptable for needlework, painting, fabric painting and numerous other arts and crafts.

The best thing about the book is the duplication of each design, first as a clear black-and-white line drawing and then as a vibrant colour-filled design.

What an inspirational book!

4 out of 5 stars Knotwork.......2006-03-14

I have not yet drawn knots from this book, but I have worked through Celtic Knots-Mastering the Traditional Pattern which I recommend at a first book for beginners like myself. However, I had read this book and can't wait to start drawing its knots.

4 out of 5 stars If you're only buying one.......2006-01-19

If you're only buying one of Meehan's books, get this one. It's earned its cost 100 times over in helping me design my own knotwork patterns. The history is interesting on the first read; I'm not working on (nearly) priceless vellum so I can afford rough drafts on scrap paper and don't follow the formal construction methods. But there's plenty of material to serve as a starting point.

The collection of Trinity knots in the back is fabulous--try them in balloon art for a change of scale.

3 out of 5 stars The Good the Bad and the Ugly.......2006-01-03

This book will show you how to make Celtic knots and it does contain detailed diagrams, however what this book shows you in 20 pages can be easily shown in just a couple of diagrams while at other times the book shows you in just a couple of diagrams what it should have shown you in 20 pages...So there is alot to be desired.

5 out of 5 stars "What a tangled web we weave".......2002-11-16

Several years ago I was having a guitar made and wanted to use a Celtic theme for some of the inlay work. As usual, I discovered that this was a more complicated task than I had originally thought. Not all places on a guitar are equal, and trying to find a set of ideas that would work as a whole is almost as challenging as designing an illuminated manuscript page.

I my frantic search through the catalogs for books that provided more than pretty pictures, I stumbled across several volumes by Aidan Meehan, including this one on knotwork. Meehan's focus is as much on design as it is on imitation, which was perfect for what I was trying to do. The book is done in clean legible calligraphy with countless illustrations of both technique and results, making it a bit of an artwork itself.

Whether 'secret' or not, Meehan presents knots, their creation, and use in fine and methodical detail. He works through some important knots, then turns to panel design, plaitwork and spiral knots. Probably much more than I will ever need, but making this a valuable resource for the artist and the historian.

Designing Celtic knotwork patterns can be as easy as drawing hearts, loops, and lines on a graph. Traditional knotwork has long been a favorite source for crafters of all kinds, but they’ve always had to rely on ready-made images. This handbook changes that, because it teaches the essential elements of construction so that anyone can plot borders, motifs, animal figures, and more.

In the "Celtic Knotwork Handbook" Sheila Sturrock invites the beginner into the adventure of designing and constructing beautiful Celtic knotwork patterns. Don't be fooled by the simple techniques explained in the book. By first teaching how to plot basic patterns on a graph paper, she teaches the student the basic patterns and designs. From these basic beginnings the student then learns how to leverage those skills to create larger more complex patterns.

In a matter of about an hour I was able to design and draw basic patterns easily. By the next day I could design and produce much more complex patterns and was quite pleased with the results. An enjoyable book that teaches one of the easiest methods to learn and create Celtic knotwork, it is a valuable reference as well as just plain fun.

If you are just getting started, or have been interested in knotwork for a while, this is a great book! It provides historical information, diagrams, how to make circular knots, anamorphics, and more than 100 original knots, which include corners, borders, and motifs. This is the best keltic knot book I've seen.

I went to the store a few days ago to take a look at this book before I decided to buy it. When I found it I was a bit dissappointed in what I saw. It looks like the same book she made in 1998. It even uses the exact same cover only this time it is brown. Don't get me wrong, that is a great book and I use it all the time, but this book was about 2 inches X 2 inches smaller. I personally prefer the larger version which is 7 1/4 inches by 9 3/4 inches. If you don't mind the smaller size, it has been a wonderful reference. I also love how they illustrate both the two-dimensional line drawing and the final three-dimensional drawing side by side.

This book is an interesting beginning for those just starting out in celtic artwork. At first, the lack of detailed instructions is confusing, but once you get the hang of it, it is very simple. This book shows an interesting way of doing complicated knotwork.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nice source of inspiration, but short on instruction........2004-11-23

If you're looking for a book with detailed instructions on how to design Celtic knot artwork, this isn't what you want. Author Courtney Davis provides a little background information about the basic knot patterns used to make larger Celtic designs, but does not say much on how to go about creating your own original patterns. Rather, he has put together a collection of several of his own designs (both original and adapted from historical pieces) and says that the images in the book "designed for young and old alike to adapt and colour for their own use" (pg. 10). So if you're looking for an advanced instruction manual, keep looking.

However, the book is still useful in a number of ways:

      (1) Beginning artists can do just what Davis advises, and play around with the patterns offered here, making little adjustments to create new designs. This is an excellent way of familiarizing oneself with the way Celtic knotwork is put together. Once you understand the basic structural themes, you can get bolder and start creating your own designs.

      (2) Artists already familiar with the construction of Celtic knots may still enjoy perusing the patterns in the book while looking for inspiration for their own works. I do this a lot myself, and often incorporate elements of various pieces into my artwork.

      (3) Children and beginning artists will find that this makes a very nice coloring book. The knots and spirals are full-page black-and-white outline drawings, ideal for coloring. For those using the book in this way Davis suggests, and I agree, that you should photocopy the image you want to work with rather than coloring straight into the book. This way, you can always re-do the same piece in different colors later on.

Davis begins the book with a brief introduction to Celtic artwork, including its history, purpose, and use and effect of color. The information is surface-level at best, but still interesting. From here on, the book is divided into two sections as the title implies. The first concerns knotwork, and the second deals with spirals. The sections offer basic information on the structure of knots and spirals, a little more history, and some of Davis's own interpretations on symbolism. There are also approximately 45 patterns for you to work with and draw inspiration from, and at the center of the book can be found 16 quarter-page color examples. Each image is accompanied by a caption explaining a little about the origins of the design.

Whether the book will be worthwhile to you depends on what you are looking for. If you want a lot of instruction, you won't find it here. But if you just want a source of possible inspiration, this may be a useful resource to help you generate ideas.

3 out of 5 stars Great coloring book...........2002-07-20

KNOTWORK AND SPIRALS by Courtney Davis is a great way to introduce kids to the intricacies of Celtic design. While historical accuracy is not Davis' specialty, the author captures the spirit if not the intent of these designs. Call it artistic license.

The book is filled with examples of knotwork borders, medallions, and other elements used to illustrate the beautiful books painstakingly copied by Christian monks--like the Book of Kells--as well as other church artifacts. Davis shares some insights into the symbology or supposed symbology of some designs, such as the center of the spiral as the 'motionless mover' (God) with flows of energy as spirals around the center.

Davis includes a number of designs of his own creation, built up as he says from doodles. There are many pages of knots and spirals for coloring, so the book makes a nice workbook for children with an artistic bent.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired Celtic Artist.......2000-11-18

This is a great book to inspire a Celtic Artist, or to show a person what Celtic Art is all about. It is easy to follow and it explaines how the art can be personalized with easy changes and examples, including full color finished work. History is also included about the many different pieces that tells the reader of the original source the artwork was found. The illistrations are large, clear and very easy to work with. This is a perfect book for someone interested in Celtic Art.

      5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-01-23

This is a wonderful book. I love the look of celtic designs, but most other celtic design books have patterns that are just too complex for me. I don't have a lot of time and I don't want to spend months working on one project. So far I've made the claddagh cross and am working on the heart for Valentines day. I'll probably use every one of these patterns eventually.

      2 out of 5 stars it's selling something.......2005-08-05

Contrary to it's title this book is in no way a practical handbook. At first glance when you read through the introduction and part one, the instructions it gives sound easy to follow and it makes it seem as though all this requires is a grid and some mindless drawing of lines. But it turns out that it is the exact opposite. There are numerous rules to remember and different combinations that aren't allowed to be near eachother and the border area is where he really loses you, the structure of the border changes the rules for the entire knot all of which must be memorized unless you want to end up with a jumble of loose ends. It would be enough to say that it sounds quite viable in theory but is completely inviable in practice. I believe the main goal of this book was to sell the computer program that was developed by the author

Just got this book. Looks to be avery good manual, with lots of technical detail.

However, the 191 page book has about 100 pages in the middle devoted to somewhat superfluous examples of line intersections.

I wanted to let everyone know that the software is available for purchase at the author's home page: http://www.net-shopper.co.uk/creative/celtic/index.htm

5 out of 5 stars A simple method to describe how Celtic knotwork is drawn........1998-10-19

4 out of 5 stars A good and interesting book........1997-10-09

I have had this book for about two years. It explains celtic knotwork construction in an easy to understand and enlightening manner. Two points subtracted for too much padding in the middle made up of not particularly useful graphs. WHERE'S THE SOFTWARE!! I WANT IT.
