Book Description

A glorious celebration of the singular sophistication of English furniture, this lavishly illustrated volume features more than 150 objects from the world-class collection of Hyde Park Antiques—one of the most prestigious purveyors of objects from England's history—showcased among charming illustrations of period interiors, exquisite drawings from cabinet-makers' albums, and contemporary interiors from the world's luminary decorators, including Mario Buatta, Albert Hadley, Bunny Williams, Charlotte Moss, and Cullman & Kravis, among many others. Five major styles from the periods between 1700 and 1830 are showcased in depth—from Queen Anne to Georgian, spanning Paladianism, English Rococo, Neoclassicsim, and Regency—along with the important designers of the age such as Thomas Chippenddale, Robert Adam, and George Hepplewhite. Recommended for both the serious collector and more casual admirer of traditional English style and design, this volume is destined to be a classic and is a must-have addition for every antiques aficionado's library.

5 out of 5 stars LOVELY HISTORY OF THE PERIOD.......2007-03-19

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL BOOK ON CLASSIC ENGLISH DESIGN AND A TRIBUTE TO THE HYDE PARK ANTIQUE BUSINESS...WELL WORTH HAVING IN A COLLECTORS LIBRARY....I LOVE LOOOKING AT THE PICTURES OVER AND OVER AGAIN.....

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product and Service.......2007-01-18

This Book was purchased as a Christmas Gift for a long-time antique collector and enthusiast. She was delighted with the quality of the photographs and information presented, and the beautiful binding and overall presentation.

3 out of 5 stars A Rather "Meh" Antique Store's Inventory........2007-01-03

My hopes were dashed again when I received this book, but I guess its my fault this time. I assumed (from the beautiful cover) that I would be getting a book showcasing traditional interiors, but what I got instead was something that resembled a Sothebys auction catalogue -- that is, a book featuring tasteful English furniture & gewgaws from the inventory of Hyde Park Antiques. There were a few shots of interiors scattered here & there, but they weren't that interesting. (Where's the sagging couch with the half-finished needlepoint, hello?) I wish the people who write blurbs for these books would stop name-dropping my favourite designers (Bunny Williams, you are a goddess!) so I won't keep wasting my money on these expensive doorstoppers. [Maximum Toile weeps in disappointment.] Sniffles.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book of Beautiful Things.......2006-12-22

In the United States we tend to think of antiques as something our grandmother had, or perhaps something that goes back as far as the Civil War. In English history, in English antiques, that isn't old at all. And the quintessential source for as new condition, museum quality English antique furniture in the United States for the past forty years has been Hyde Park Antiques in New York City.

As Mr. Buatta says: 'The gallery is like a living museum, with the important difference being that you not only get to touch the objects, you have the unparalleled pleasure of being able to take them home with you.'

This book is a beautifully photographed, exquisitely printed collection of some 150 items from the gallery. It is organized by date, beginning with William and Mary & Queen Anne style dating from their reign (1689-1714).

These photographs are accompanied by drawings and photographs of rooms from English (and a few imitation) homes that illustrate how this furniture was combined with other items, perhaps English, Indian or oriental to create English rooms.

5 out of 5 stars Martha Stewart says it's a GOOD thing.......2006-12-11

On Wednesday December 6, 2006 on her TV show, Martha Stewart featured a small number of coffee table books for the holiday season. One of her favorites was this book: Classic English Design and Antiques by Emily Eerdmans. She said - and I quote - "This is a fantastic, fantastic book."

After reading it myself, I must agree Martha had it right. Visually stunning, thoroughly researched and beautifully written - an aesthetic, scholarly and literary tour de force. In short, as Martha said, a fantastic, fantastic book.

Each of the 141 objects is thoroughly described with detailed information on provenance, construction, condition, inscriptions, dimensions, and materials. Photographed anew in color for this volume, each piece is explicated in terms of the styles and craftsmanship of the period and is evaluated in light of comparative pieces in public and private collections throughout the country. Book Description

The technique of Hardstone mosaic was developed in the sixteenth century under the patronage of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, in parallel with the revival of Roman mosaics made from tiny tesserae. Complex images were created from a matrix of coloured marbles and semiprecious stones, selected and cut with breathtaking craftsmanship. During the seventeenth century the technique was used in the production of some of the most magnificent luxury objects in Italy; in the eighteenth century, panels of landscapes, birds and flowers were incorporated into furniture and snuffboxes. This gave way in the nineteenth century to the production of pictures in extraordinarily convincing imitation of oil paintings.

            Book Description

Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) was one of the most outstanding design engineers of the 20th century. His work is a remarkable combination of creative imagination, technical skill and visionary enterprise. The first of Birkhäuser's 4-volume edition of Prouvé's Complete Works covers the period between 1917 and 1933 including the first metalwork objects (staircase railings, lamps), the first standardised building products (windows, doors, movable partitions), the first furniture in moulded steel and the first building projects to use folded sheet metal, such as operating theatres in Lyon's Hôpital Grange Blanche, as well as the text of numerous conversations with Jean Prouvé. "Peter Sulzer's work is an admirable catalogue raisonné of the works of Jean Prouvé... He has made a remarkable synthesis from a variety of sources, rigorously organised on the page and easily readable" (commendation on the award of the French Briey Prize for an architectural book).

Don't buy from this vendor, the book was prepriced and they charged substanitally more plus the frieght. When contacted about it they asked for more imformation and pictures of the product then is required to get a social security number. They were bascially nasty with their attitude. Amazon should not list these people.

"The Bulfinch Anatomy of Antique Furniture" is not only a wonderful reference book with lovely illustrations and photos, but it makes a great coffee table book as well. I highly recommend this book. It is a great value for very little money.

5 out of 5 stars An essential guide for the antiquers reference library!.......2005-01-14

This is an absolute sensational book! It is a book that must be included in your antiques reference library!
It covers everything A to Z on the subject of identifying and authenticating period pieces. You WILL be able to identify period pieces once you've studied the book subjects. It offers hundred of pictures, with clear cut difinitions and examples.
If you are an antiques dealer, beginner or expert, you will not regret owning this very comprehensive guide.
I would also like to recomment The Bulfinch Anatomy of Antique Furniture; another must have reference book.
            *****

            3 out of 5 stars A good reference.......2002-06-11

This volume provides a good reference for collectors of antique furniture. It includes a detailed chronology of styles and periods, coverering Europe and the US, and presents typical pieces of various categories of furniture, including details on construction. It is well illustrated. Unfortunately no relative values are provided. Also degree of rarity, popularity, etc. is also rarely mentioned.(A tip: I still think that Peter Philp's FIELD GUIDE TO ANTIQUE FURNITURE is much better. In fact, if you've got Philp's book, you don't really need this one).

This was a very helpful book to determine furniture in different periods of time. It's a good resource.

            3 out of 5 stars A good overview........2006-07-20

Overall, a pretty good book. Starting a little earlier than most modern books, it begins with some examples of Arts & Crafts, Nouveau and Deco which help give some interesting perspective.

The photos are large, but of varying quality. Some pics surprised me with new angles and views than I am used to. (There is a shot of a Nelson Marshmallow couch in a very large size that I had never heard of.) Some of the shots show some aging and wear and tear which is refreshing to see and sometimes adds some nice character to the pieces.

              Book Description

To connoisseurs of modern furniture, names such as Wendell Castle, Wharton Esherick, Sam Maloof and George Nakashima are signposts to a revolution in the decorative arts that remains one of the most vital of our time. For the past half-century, the studio furniture movement has grown in reaction to the traditionally designed and mass-produced furnishings generally available to Americans. Instead, studio furniture makers offer works that are innovative in design, finely hand-crafted and representative of a unique sensibility--works that stand midway between function and fine art. The Maker's Hand is one of the first, and to date the most authoritative, books about the studio furniture movement. Written by two of the leading experts in the field, it details the history and development of studio furniture, from its origins in post-World War II America through its explosion in the "back-to-nature" 60s, metamorphosis in the "techno" 70s and professional emergence in the 80s. Along the way, the authors show how changes in American tastes, technology and culture have influenced these pieces. Also included are extensive biographies of some 40 furniture makers, as well as guides to the main exhibitions, schools and galleries. Profusely illustrated with works by Castle, Maloof, Molly Gregory, John Cederquist, Judy Kensley McKie and many others, this is an invaluable guide to the inventive, often witty, always surprising world of studio furniture.

5 out of 5 stars Enduring examples of the workworker's art.......2004-01-14

The collaborative effort of furniture and woodworking experts Edward S. Cooke, Jr., Gerald W. R. Ward, and Kelly H. L'Ecuyer, The Maker's Hand: American Studio Furniture 1940-1990 beautifully displays elegant wooden furniture impressively enhanced with full color photography. Examining the original and distinctive nature of studio furniture in strict contrast to mass-produced furnishings, The Maker's Hand dwells upon function of these creations, as well as their qualities as three-dimensional, ultimately resonant, and enduring examples of the workworker's art. The Maker's Hand is a welcome and highly appreciated addition to personal, professional, and community library Woodworking, Antiques/Collectibles, and American Furniture reference collections.
