Not what I expected.......2007-08-31
I looked forward to the publication of this book, because I had seen and been impressed by the author's clothing. However, it turned out to be a disappointment in many ways. There are some very good instructions, especially on using sequins, but most of the book is given over to a number of designs which I guess are for use on clothing. I found most of them completely uninspiring and I wish more space had been given to techniques.
Excellent beading reference.......2007-06-28
A very comprehensive and excellently produced introduction to beading techniques. Highly recommended as the first reference book for someone starting beading and keen to produce interesting and high quality projects.
Designer Bead Embroidery.......2007-06-27
The designs are inspiring and some of the most original I've seen in any of my collection of bead embroidery books. I haven't tried to reproduce any as yet as it is on loan to a friend who wants a costume for her glass walking act beaded. She is a local performer here in Las Vegas and we are going to make her sparkle with beads.
Disappointing.......2007-06-08
This book is very disappointing. The use of word "designer" on the title is being abused and misled customers. All samples and pattern illustrated in the book are unbearable, old-fashioned, un-creative and un-inspirational. I feel sorry for having it.
Beading.......2007-05-14
This is a great bead book to own. Lots of interesting and unusual bead designs. Photos are wonderful.

Review of The Complete Guide to Beading Techniques.......2007-03-09
I found this book to be very helpfull. I am a beader and it was helpfull to go back and review techniques and ro learn some new ones. I think this book will be very helpfull to new beaders and other beaders.
WASTE OF MONEY.......2006-12-31
After reading other reviews I couldn't wait to receive this book and try some new techniques. I was VERY disappointed with the instructions -- there is no way I could complete even an "easy" sample project. The instructions were sooooo basic that they were incomplete. This is definitely NOT a book for beginners.
Not what I expected.......2006-10-13
Personally I found this book rather dissapointing. The instructions are very perfunctory and often incomplete. Better instructions on most of the included tecjniques are available free on the web with a bit of searching. It is an interesting book to read but don't expect too much practical help.
Best beading guide ever.......2006-05-02
This is the most complete guide to beading techniques I've ever seen. It covers everything you could possibly want to do with beads, especially seed beads. It covers everything from beadweaving (peyote, brick, herringbone, netting, etc. stitches) to knitting, crocheting, and tatting with beads, to wire work, to bead embroidery. The instructions are wonderfully clear and well-illustrated. There are 2-3 projects to make with each technique, including a small sampler project to get your feet wet. The book is also an invaluable resource for tips and tricks and information on beads and beading.
This is not a very good book for the rawest beginner, nor does it cover the basics of actual knitting or crocheting (but you can easily find basic knitting and crochet stitch directions online or in other books). But if you've had some experience with beading, this book is great, and it will take you to the most advanced beading stages. I'm an intermediate/advanced beader, and am constantly finding new information in this book.
Titled appropriately.......2006-03-13
The book is wonderful. The illustrations on how to do the various stitches are enlarged enough to easily see what's going on. You don't need to puzzle out stuff. Besides the size of the illustrations, they are clear cut with each step having its own picture along with clear written out instructions.
As the title said, its complete. All of the techniques I could think of are in there, plus some I never heard about.
With all of the techniques shown, there are very well written and diagramed instructions, a sample to do to try the technique, and a project that uses that techniqe. There is even a sampler project using all of the samples of each technique at the end.
The photographs are beautiful. The projects they depict are bold, vibrant, and useful at the same time. The pictures of bead crafts that are show as examples of what can be done with beads are stunning.
Besides all this, the section where the tools and wares of beading are mentioned is good. This section also has a how to do basic beading stitches section as well - including the looom.

This is a beautiful book. Very well put together with clear pictures and I never had any idea that many stitches existed!
.......2007-05-14
This book is the ultimate bead book. I would reccommend it to anyone who loves to bead.
Good Technical Beading Book.......2007-03-11
I purchased this book as a companion to Designer Bead Embroidery by Kenneth D. King. This book also incorporates a lot of embroidery stitches with beading techniques. There is a good glossery and stitch index in the back of the book - along with some eye-candy photos of complete projects. Most of the designs are geared towards an "intermediate" level stitcher. It's a keeper!!
Beady Expert.......2007-02-21
This will be one of my most referred to for bead embroidery. Its simple, easy to understand and really helpful.
I'm planning to finish the dress that I'm working on a masterpiece and I would like to thank Jane Davis for this lovely book.
Now I know how to do it and try this book from A-Z I will.
Next stop, another embroidery project. Adieu!
Bead Embroidery review.......2007-01-09
This book is the cat's meow. I don't know how I survived without it.
Well worth the money if you are a stitcher and work with beads.

Add a little glitz or a LOT.......2001-08-08
Mary Stori has staked out the world of beaded embellishment as her specialty and it is a good thing for the rest of us. Her enthusiasm for the form is palpable, her directions are clear and complete. The quilt designs sown in the book are more cute than elegant, but this reflects the type of small projects that one could finish in a workshop. The methods could easily be adapted to more sophisticated applications. Mary shows each stitch in a close up picture and illustration and accompanies this with written instructions that are easy to follow. If you follow her suggestion and make a beaded sampler of each stitch, you will be well on your way to embellishing your first real project. Tip and tricks keep you from making the same mistakes she made while learning. Eight projects are given in detail.
The Stori of Beaded Embellishment.......2001-08-06
I absolutely loved the book and am already starting to collect beads..."anything with a hole in it" ! It may be "non-traditional" but the information is priceless. As a person who has never added beads to anything I found the stitch instructions were well written and the illustrations are excellent, well worth the price of the book. As an added bonus, you can get some great ideas of how to use beads by studying some of Mary Stori's very whimisical and funny quilts. You will love the humor in all Mary's quilts and her techniques for using beads are fantastic.

beading from South Africa.......2007-01-20
Although the author is South AFrican, her beadwork is very much in the Anglo-American beadweaving tradition. Good print and binding in a softcover and lots of helpful color photos. There are 2 tassels, 3 on spiral rope, 3 with brick stitch, one with combined stitches and 7 with peyote stitch. Each project includes a photo of the beads so you can see the size and black and white illus showing what to do plus also photos showing how to do it. In addition everything written out clearly. The last project for a table mat is absolutely gorgeous and is done in two-drop even count peyote. Others include a single strand necklace, spiral rope lariat, spiral rope belt, spiral rope necklace, bookmark in flat brick stitch, tubular brick amulet bag, brick necklace, keyring in even-count flat peyote, another in odd-count, tieback in peyote, wineglass marker, little egg baskets, peyote odd-count necklace. Projects use seed beads mainly and nymo or other threads. This is also an excellent learning book with very full instructions for the beginner but the more advanced beader will definitely enjoy doing the projects which are just gorgeous with wonderful colors. Don't miss this one.
Book Description

Daring and adventurous beading.......2007-06-27
I haven't taken the time to learn this kind of beading, but it looks spectacular and quite daring--different, and would make good conversation pieces. Beautiful pictures.
Fantastic Tool.......2007-01-03
This is a comprehensive book on the brick stitch. It gives detailed instructions as well as beautiful eye candy for inspiration. This book will teach the beginner and motivate the experienced to a higher level. A book every beader should have in her library.
mainly positive review.......2005-08-09
I haven't yet read the book thoroughly because I'm beading a peyote project now but I can say I like the explanation on the history of brick stitch. I think the same shapes done by different people, each work varying in colors and much the same shape is somewhat pointless, though I enjoyed the variety of colors and the works are lovely. I think you could have included a wider range of instructions on how to build a sculptoral shape step by step. The works included in the gallery are beautiful and inspiring. Have I written between 75 - 300 words ? I'll let you have the fun of counting (if you ever intend to do so - ha ha ha !!! ) Tirza, Israel.
excellent instructions and projects.......2004-08-04
I found Beading with Brick Stitch an excellent book for learning how to do brick stitch. On working several of the projects, I found the instructions quite clear, and these were the first time I had done brick stitch. Several pluses put this book on a level above many beading books: the history of brick stitch with pictures of traditional uses; the inclusion of single-stack, double-stack and triple-stack brick stitch graph paper to copy; many different photos of each project as made by the author's friends to demonstrate variations; and a well-done gallery for inspiration. I have found that this book has been able to answer all my brick stitch questions so far, and I have found it one of the best books in the beadworks "Beading with" series.
a good book with a few drawbacks.......2003-09-28
first, i will say that i can misinterpret directions like nobody you've ever known. if this were a talent, i'd be a genius. it makes following even the best written craft instructions a wee bit difficult.
but i'm not entirely to blame for my confusions with this book. until i took a class, i thought i was not following the instructions as presented, because there were no photos or drawings accurately showing what the edge of the work should look like. knowing peyote stitch, i should have realized that brick stitch would also have sawtoothed edges, but i didn't. i just thought all my attempts were wrong.
after having been shown, by a real live person, how to do this stitch, i went back to the book to practice increasing and decreasing. well, several methods of increasing for triple brick stitch are well illustrated, but single is not so well served. granted, some of the methods would work with both, but only experimenting will tell for others. this is a drawback to me because i think an instruction book should instruct on the basics, not leave the reader to experiment to learn them. one method of decreasing which does not leave the thread visible is not included.
tubular single brick stitch is covered, but not double or triple. maybe these are exactly the same, but nothing is said, that i could find, about whether there are any structural differences. circular brick stitch of any number is not covered.
there are very nice, full-page-sized graphs for single, double and triple brick stitch. it would have been nice to have had a graph for circular, because, while i could probably eventually figure out the mathematics of increasing for a flat circle, i would really rather have it done for me.
the reasons i gave the book four stars and not three are: the historical background section and photos and the inspiring gallery and project sections. diane fitzgerald's work is stunning and the examples of other artists in the gallery section are equally wonderful. the projects are interesting, and a nice feature is the inclusion of variations by the author's students.
on one hand, the sparseness of instructions keeps this book from being more than a good introduction to brick stitch. on the other, the gallery is an excellent source of inspiration. so, even with the drawbacks, it does deserve space in any beader's library.
Book Description
This book contains detailed drawings and diagrams that are easy to follow. Each item can be made with just a few common tools, the materials listed in the book, and some simple techniques.
Customer Reviews:
A great book for a certain type of person.......2007-09-16
I'm a pretty experienced beader, skilled in beadweaving techniques as well as wirework, knotting, etc. I thought I was a pretty apt visual learner until I attempted to figure out how to make a project in this book. I have read several of the japanese translated beading books without too much difficulty, but since these projects are a little more advanced (and rather unfamiliar since the techniques aren't as common in the states), I have to say I failed utterly with this book. I read it in a bookstore and decided there was no reason to buy it because the projects would simply sit on my shelf, never being completed. Frankly, I would find it easier to look at the photographs and attempt to figure out how to make the jewelry than I found it to look at the so-called directions and figure it out. If you have a LOT of patience for that kind of thing, buy this book. If you think your beading book should be an intellectual challenge, buy this book. If you, like me, think that reading the instructions should be the easiest part of completing a beading project, skip this one.
loved the book.......2007-08-13
I loved this book and I thought that the jewellery was lovely.
However, I would'nt recommend this book to a beginer, or even anyone who hasn't done japanese style beading before. As with most japanese beading books, there is very little written directions. There are diagrams showing the beads and thread paths instead. The thread paths are easy to follow, but I dont think that they are sutable for a beginer because you have to follow them yourself and there are no step by step diagrams
Romantic and Victorian inspired Beading patterns.......2006-10-04
This in one of my favorite beading books, I would not recommend this to a beginner, since you have to know beading techniques in order to complete the projects. If you are an expert beader, the instructions are easy to understand and follow. It is also mostly diagrams so if you are not superb at following visual instruction you'll definitely feel frustrated. I am lucky since I am superb at both diagram and word instructions.
Art of Antigue Beading.......2005-09-13
Love this book!! Not only is it filled with beautiful and unique designs, the directions are so clear and easy to follow.
Not what I was hoping for..........2005-07-02
I checked this book out from the library because I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy it or not. Thank goodness I didn't buy it. The photos were gorgeous, but when I turned to the back of the book, the instructions were terrible. They're all diagrams with little or no worded instructions. I found it very difficult to figure out where to begin half of the time. Some of the easier projects like the wavy choker looked pretty simple to follow, but other than that, you need to be very good at reading diagrams. Not only are they hard to read, but the illustration are very tiny.
I'll probably just copy a few of the diagrams and pictures that I like and return it to the library. I would not reccomend this book to those who are beginning beaders. Even if you are an advanced beader, you still may have trouble with the tiny diagrams. I would most definately reccomend checking this book out from the library to see if you like it.
