Wonderfully Educational.......2007-05-14
This book is wonderfully educational. It takes you back to the beginning of furniture and walks you through the centuries providing you with the intial inspiration through Modern design. Great pictures too.
Waste of time and MONEY!.......2006-07-09
Based on the reviews of this book I decided to buy it! To my absolute shock, I dont understand who wrote these great reviews??? They were probably written by the publisher or author of this book.
What a waste of time and money. Being a designer myself, i ve got every possible book on interior design, and furniture styles that are out on the market. Based on the price of this book, and good reveiws, I figured it would be a great addition to my collection of books and references. Its poorly printed, very bad paper quality, no detailed shots of the furniture pieces, and not worth the price whatsoever. I mean if the publisher is charging this price, then the least they could do is print it on good paper and have clearer pictures.
I am extremely dissapointed and returning the book asap.
If u enjoy throwing your money away on a small book with poorly printed pictures(aside from the info, which is fine)then this is the book to buy . But if you are looking for details of furniture, including the background and history, and worth every penny, then i suggest you buy (Furniture: World Styles From Classical to Contemporary by Judith Miller )
Good Guide.......2006-02-08
I was not impressed when I received this book, with the quality of the paper or the overall presentation. I thought some of the photography left much to be desired quality-wise. However, it is quite a comprehensive book and I leaned on it considerably in my studies of furniture and design. So don't let me put you off. I just think that, with all the research and hard work involved, and considering the price, a better quality might have been forthcoming.
Like Cliff Notes for Furniture!.......2005-08-10
This book has brief history lessons on furniture from the begining of time! It's a great reference when you need an answer about a design period- quick! A must for every Interior Designer!
Excellent Reference - Nice Job!.......2003-01-19
I found the book to be a good overall reference and extremely
useful in explaining period furniture to my design clients. I would like to have seen more coverage of Mid-century Modern, especially the work of Edward Wormley and DUNBAR.
Definitely worth the money - should be all designers reference
libraries...
Book Description
The classic American bungalow is as popular today as when introduced in the Victorian era. Bungalow Style pictures a wide variety of interior details and describes how to add or restore elements that suggest a historic flair while keeping the home comfortable and functional. Common problems such as integrating modern conveniences or gaining needed space are also addressed.
Customer Reviews:
Not terribly helpful.......2007-07-03
I was very excited to get this book as we plan to incorporate some craftsman style elements into the 1970s bungalo we're buying. The interiors in the photos were not terribly attractive and leaned towards kitschy. Unless you want to turn you house into a museum to 20th century cheasiness, don't buy this book.
Good book!!.......2007-03-12
This is a good book if you are looking at remodeling a craftman type home or if you are planning to build one. I did like some of the idea's and the pictures.
Great Idea Book.......2007-01-15
If you are planning any kind work where you are going using allot of wood this is a great book, it is full of ideas. The photos have great detail. One of best books I have on Craftsman/Arts& Crafts interiors.
Beautiful pictures, workable ideas.......2006-05-20
So you've bought a bungalow--now, what do you do with it? Maybe it's a fixer-upper; maybe it's too small, or doesn't have enough storage space; maybe you're just not sure what kind of furniture to get. This book is a great start toward deciding where to go next. Illustrated with hundreds of full-color photographs, it shows not only many of the features by which you can tell an Arts & Crafts house when you see it (I was surprised to learn that the big old foursquares such as my grandparents lived in for 40 years are included in this classification), but gives actual ideas carried out by other homeowners, even unto before-and-after floor plans. The author's advice is thoughtful and well suited to the houses she writes about, too. And if you just like to look at pictures of vintage American homes, this would be a good volume to add to your collection.
Houses, er, too large.......2005-07-06
There's a lot of good in this book, and it's given me a few ideas for my own arts-and-crafts vernacular house, but at the same time it's frustrating. Lots of the pictures feel (or explicitly state) that they're from houses much larger than the classic 900-2000 square foot bungalow.
Given that Taunton is also the publisher of The Not So Big House and a few books on cottages, it's a little strange to see bungalows recast so large, either built bigger or with additions tastefully tucked out of view from the street.
While I like most of the details they show, their approach (perhaps necessary to include the new bungalows being built today) means that a lot of the coziness small bungalows naturally offered is missing, replaced by modern open plans and a lot of period trim and woodwork that can't quite make up the difference.

thanks for the book... i'l learning how to crocheting now :) very useful book ...
perfect reference book.......2007-08-24
I love this book. I keep it in my yarn basket next to my recliner. I'm always referring to it. The pictures are clear. No drawings like a lot of books use. This has real clear photos. Very easy to understand. Very well written. I can't recommend this enough. Thanks Kim! I love your book!
Best Beginner Crochet Book .......2007-08-08
People have different learning styles. If you're a visual learner and new to crochet, this is the book to get. I had not crocheted anything in years and needed a good, uncomplicated book to get me going again. I ordered this and "Crocheting for Dummies" which intimidated me a bit with too many words and too few pictures. Both are good books, but "Teach Yourself Visually Crocheting" is the one I am continually refering to for guidance.
Amazing crochet book!.......2007-07-11
I've learned crochet from "Start Crochet / Crochet Basics" by Jan Eaton, a good illustrated book with clear instructions, but I've got bored within few months and stop crochet for more than a year. I decided to start again recently and bought this book. I was surprised after leafing through the pages; I didn't know that so many techniques exist!
I loved the way each technique and pattern is presented: clear step by step photos, pattern explained using crochet terminology and then in plain English. I finally understood the terminologies used in advanced books and on internet projects and now I can easily follow a pattern. Also I found out that I was doing crucial mistakes as result most of my projects weren't looking right as show in the final photos (one of the reasons I've got bored).
A great book for learning crochet but also to have it as a reference no matter at which stage you are.
Happy Customer.......2007-05-13
I am very pleased with this book. It is very instructive and helpful.
Book Description
The only knitting book focused on lingerie and lingerie-inspired designs
Underwear has come out. Once kept demurely concealed, lingerie now pervades every fashion category, inspiring designs for day looks, loungewear, evening clothes, and accessories. Slips have become dresses unto themselves. Bra straps are meant to peek out from under tank tops. Camisoles are worn on their own or as layers over or under other clothes. Now, with Knitting Lingerie Style, designer Joan McGowan-Michael interprets this undeniable fashion trend for the knitter and, along the way, shares fascinating stories about lingerie history. Did you know that it was airplane magnate Howard Hughes who masterminded the underwire bra?
McGowan-Michael's 30-plus designs, stunningly photographed by Thayer Allyson Gowdy, range from the truly functionalknitted bras, slips, corsets, camisoles, and stockingsto the purely fun. The brassiere inspires a curvature-enhancing twinset. The baby doll negligee is the basis for a lacy little gown and a matching thong set that's both luxurious and (slightly) notorious. And a ribbed, laced-front sweater is an updatedand much more comfortable!take on the classic corset.
The only book of its kind on the market, Knitting Lingerie Style includes projects that are bold and sexy, daring us all to bare a little skin, as well as more understated and demure, with sizes ranging from petite to plus.
Customer Reviews:
Great new ideas for knitting!.......2007-10-09
This is a beautiful and outstanding knitting book, and I have been buying and reading them for almost my entire life! The patterns are unique! Bras, camisoles and other naughty but nice undergarment type pieces that have certainly come out in the open in the last few years! Patterns are easy to follow, but not recommended for absolute beginners. Some of the items would make great gifts for a bride-to-be, and there is also a fabulous bedjacket. If you like knitting with fine yarns and small needles, then this is the book for you!
Love it.......2007-09-29
The designs are wonderful. There aren't many designers that I like almost all the designs of, but Joan did succeed on that. I haven't only bought the book, but also several patterns of her website. She just designs the cutest stuff.
not like the rest.......2007-09-29
Although I agree with many of the reviews as far as a beautiful book, in depth directions,(for smaller sizes)and great variety of design, this isn't a book for any beginner or even moderately experienced knitter. This needs to be made clear. I consider myself very adept at knitting but realize these projects are very detailed and one should have lots of experience before being lured by the great designs. Also, even though there are extended sizes I wish some of the models used in the book could have reflected such a variety of "real sizes" for women. The models are svelte and the garments look exceptional on them but I'm a size 12 not a 0 and it just didn't give a true representation of the finished garments. My rating of 3 stars is really to caution others of the complexity of the the patterns and their need to be experienced in many levels of garment knits. If you are then this is a very inspiring book.
Great patterns, but no instructions on how to modify!.......2007-09-16
I plan on making a good number of the patterns in this book, and can only echo the praise of her clear instructions, beautiful photography, and fascinating history lessons.
Sizing - all the patterns have instructions for a wide variety of sizes. But my proportions are not the same are those in her patterns. So I was disappointed to find no instructions on how to fit the garment to myself - part of my motivation for knitting was to finally have something that actually fit *my* shape, instead of the average person's shape.
She does provide enough information about how the clothing is supposed to fit I believe I can modify the patterns myself to make them fit me. But the shaping on the undergarments is not so straightforward, and as another person commented she has no undergarments to fit larger than a D-cup - she also has no undergarments to fit smaller than an A-cup. It would have been nice to get instructions on how to deal with these less common sizes.
Basic to inspired.......2007-09-07
McGowan-Michaels' designs are heavily influenced by lingerie (gee, ya think?) but also retro fashions. I'm totally in love. There's not a lot of text save for an introduction to each chapter and an appendix of special techniques; it's picture- and pattern-heavy. Each chapter takes an item of lingerie--the bra, the slip, the corset, the camisole, the stocking, and lounge/nightwear--and reinvents it in several ways. My only concern with this book is also one of the reasons I love McGowan-Michaels' designs so much: she uses a lot of dressmakers' details. I can't sew a button, and the pool of all-knitted projects is small.
Queue-worthy: halter top and boy short, trumpet skirt, waist-cincher top, lace tee, surplice bodice camisole, baby doll and panty, bed jacket
Why bother?: merry widow shell, feather-trimmed bustier and fingerless gloves, gartini, mesh leggings
Conclusion: Lots of small details make the patterns unique.

Kinda Creepy.......2007-07-21
This book has an adequate technical description of the techniques and is helped if you also get the DVD book(?), Create with the Designers Beaded Crochet, of hers that contains some of the projects from this book where Ann Benson gives a good demo of the basics.
I guess some consider the projects tasteful but I think the majority of them are very old fashioned and I am a 66 year old grandmother! My main objection to this book are the photos of young girls dressed up with lots of makeup wearing these 'jewels'. This is where my review title comes in. These pictures are far too reminiscent of that poor child, JonBinet Ramsey, and therefore Kinda Creepy!
pretty pictures but not alot of "guts"........2007-04-10
This book had lovely pictures of young girls wearing jewels but in my mind lacked the instruction/s I was looking for. When ordering a book to increase my bead crochet abilities that is exactly what I want - a how to book. This book did not fill that desire. This is not a book that I would necessarily keep in my library.
a different perspective.......2007-03-04
When I bought this book I thought I would be able to learn bead crochet from it without much difficulty. HA! The author uses bead slip-stitch and even though I had many years of crocheting experience........I just couldn't 'get-it'. Bead single crochet beginning with larger beads and thicker thread was a better technique for learning (for me anyway). Now that I learned (from another source)......I love this book and have used for several projects. It is a beautiful book, full of inspiration and I find it quite contemporary compared to vintage beaded ropes.
Bead Crochet Jewelry: Tools, Tips, and 15 Beautiful Projects.......2007-02-14
I love this book.
I've been teaching bead rope crochet for 3 years. This the best resource book I've seen. It has both simple and complex ideas but also some very advanced techniques that I've not seen elsewhere and believe me I have just about everything.
old fashioned.......2006-07-09
This is so old fashioned! it looks like the jewles of a grandma, that the grandaughter will love to play with, but, well, nothing I really want to make.
maybe the instructions are good, that is why i am giving it 3 stars and not one. but the thing on the cover - this is what inside. do not expect anything modern. this is only my opinion.

Not sold on this book.......2007-09-29
Annie is a great designer whose knit patterns I've come to love, so thought I'd give this book a try as well. Although the photography is second to none and inspiring the patterns, for me, lacked indepth directions. They need to be more complete. I also feel that its the basic same pattern over and over just extended to a greater width and more beads with slight variations, primarily cuff/choker designs. Actually the pieces look uncomfortable to wear.
I like this one..........2007-07-05
For as long as I have crocheted, I never really considered doing jewelry until lately when I started doing kumihimo braiding. As in many crochet books, patterns are recycled and predictable. But I have to say this book has provided me with a reason to rethink and maybe give the craft a try. The explanations and directions are not over explained, the photography is lovely and the designs inspiring. You shouldn't use this book to learn to crochet, have a better than beginner understanding of how to knit or crochet and doing a little research at your local bead store (we have some great ones here in DC) and handling some tools at the local hardware shop (not all needle-nose pliers are equal) wouldn't hurt either.
Beautiful book, great inspiration and instruction.......2007-07-03
There are some really nice designs in this book, and just a few which are a little over the top that I probably will never make. Most of them are quite 'wearable'. The book is filled with amazing photography where you can clearly see the details of the wire pieces.
Plus, there are great chapters on how to knit with wire, and how to crochet with wire--very informative. The book is made up of the following chapters:
Necklaces
Bracelets
Sets
Earrings and Pins
Knitting with wire
Crocheting with wire
Finishing wire pieces
Resources (great recommendations on where and what to buy)
If you like this book, you might also look at "Wire Jewelry" by Kate Pullen. Very similar subject matter, but completely different designs.
Great way to start.......2007-06-14
This book has beautiful projects to make. The instructions are fairly simple and helpful. Though there are some areas where I wish that they had better pictures to explain, I did find that the descriptions are pretty accurate (especially when telling you what the wire should feel like and how you should feel like you are over-exaggerating your movements). I highly recommend this book to a beginner, but even more so for an intermediate wire-knitter who just wants to be inspired by some beautiful projects.
Disappointed.......2007-06-07
There weren't dozens of products. There were several errors in patterns. And these are expensive little things to make.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-08-15
I found this book very inspiring. There are many interesting projects. I especially liked the projects done with tiny stitches, and the cube pendant. This book covered the basic techniques, but went beyond them. I have referred back to the book many times and will continue to do so. Every time I look at it I springboard off with new ideas of my own.
Good Ideas.......2007-02-14
This book have good ideas wich help me to create my own projects. The models are elegant and easy to do.
Great book and worth the money!.......2006-09-21
This book is inspiring for the depth and innovation of the projects shown. I expect the projects of professional artist to be pushing the limits of what can be done in the medium. I would not be interested in buying a "how to" book that showed me how to make ordinary things -- go to Michael's craft stores for such "make and take" classes. This type of book, with such a variety of projects, is meant to be used as a basis to make your own, unique pieces (not to make copies of other's designs).
Not What I Expected.......2006-07-03
I was very disappointed in this long awaited book. I teach wire crochet at a local craft store and had this book on my wish list for months. While the book had good clear instructions on the various techniques involved in crocheting wire, I found the projects to be way too bizarre to have any use for the average person. As a teacher of this technique, I feel that the person new to wire crochet will be overwhelmed with the oddness of the "over the top" designs featured here while the experienced wire crocheter, will feel let down by the perhaps one or two new techniques they may find as well as the designs being virtually non-usable in the average person's wardrobe. I am definitely feeling as though I wasted my money on this book, and as a previous reviewer stated, it is definitely headed for eBay VERY soon...
Disappointed.......2006-06-26
I was very disappointed in this book. The instructions were very detailed in explaining the basic stitches -- however, the projects were not what I was expecting. The projects were all above and beyond what the average person would attempt, or wear if achieved. I will be selling this on ebay soon! Sorry!

Customer Reviews:
Extreme Disappointment.......2007-07-30
In the past year there has been a lot of exciting and interesting work created that combine both knitting and crochet. With the hope of finding inspiring and innovative designs and based solely on the book's description and intriguing cover, I bought this book to fill in an Amazon order and get the free shipping.
I was extremely disappointed. There are 22 "stylish designs" in this book and only 7 patterns are garments. The other patterns are accessories or home decorating and over half of those are simply crocheted flowers slapped on a knitting project or the tired basic granny square worked into one more design.
The knit i-cord dog leash with chain 3 crochet loops around the handle for "trim" is the worst of the book but others come very close. I wish I had been able to scan through this book because it would never have passed my buy test -- are there at least three patterns that I might be interested in or that inspire me? The pattern on the cover of this book was the ONLY one.
WOW!.......2007-03-27
This book is great. The instructions are well wtitten and easy to follow. I am almost finished with the child's 'Cherries and Berries' sweater, it is too cute. My granddaughter is going to love it. Thanks Candi Jensen!!!
Dissapointed!.......2007-03-12
I bought this book because I have a few frustrations as someone who prefers to crochet but is only able to find interesting patterns in knit. Or, the patterns I find lack something...they are too much of the same pattern over and over, no texture or color variations (other than variegated yarn). Plus, both knit and crochet patterns are too grannyish and are not in the least bit exciting.
I got excited when I saw this book, because I thought it would blend textures with knitting and crochet..and possibly make the knitting not as boring by adding a little crochet to it and by adding a little bit of style and femininity. The tank top on the cover created all these expectations because it is cute and feminine.
The book has the tank top, and another pretty and realistic sweater. There is a v-kneck cardigan that is not very flattering. There is one sweater in the book that is pretty and very vintage in an 18th century kind of way, but who would ever wear it. There are two shrugs...are we tired of shrugs yet? And..hello...they're not in style anymore. A couple of crocheted purses...which in a world where your purse is a statement and coach bags are it...who really wants to carry a felted purse with big tacky flowers on it unless you live in mayberry. Girly beaded fingerless gloves that you can wear with your prom dress...yeah right( AND who wears fingerless gloves unless you got them as a gift from a goofy knitting/crocheting relative). A dopey hat and arm warmers. What are arm warmers and who wants or needs them? A cute twenties-style crochet hat with 3 flowers. Some bad scarves that look like you dyed your grandma's table runner with bad colors and tied it around your kneck (attempted suicide?). An opera purse...nothing special. A back-to-school backpack that you will never make and your kid will never use...although it is kinda sweet. A DOG SWEATER...Aren't there enough dogs wearing bad sweaters...didn't God provide them with a coat to begin with? A dog leash...finally a pattern for a dog leash..I've been searching (sarcasm).I didn't pay all this money for this book for dog leash and dog sweater patterns...when I can get 50 on the internet for free. There is a really overly cutesy and girly and boxy little girls sweater. There were some nice household items: lots of nice knitted and crocheted pillows, a pretty afghan that is not that innovative (you could have come up with the design without this pattern) except maybe in the color choices. Elegant placemat and ringholders...yawn( sort of pretty in a granny kinda way but not exciting). And...to top it off, a christmas stocking, yawn....another thing that I can find 50 of on the internet. Thank goodness for one thing...no FUN FUR patterns!!
After I got the book, I immediately shelved it and moved on. Buy it if you can get it really cheap for the few decent patterns, or take a look at it in the library first...I may donate my copy.
For Knitters only.......2007-02-14
Projects require you to know how to knit. I'm sure for knitters this is a nice book. But completely useless to me as just a crocheter. Will keep it in case one of these days I ever learn to knit.
KNITTING LOVES CROCHET pairs up the best of both worlds........2007-01-04
Candi Jensen's projects are designed to highlight the pairing of knitting and crocheting: arts usually kept apart in their own books. From embellishments from the world of crochet to finished sweaters and clothing to knitted products with crochet bands and embellishments incorporated into the design, KNITTING LOVES CROCHET pairs up the best of both worlds.

Crochet fanatics .......2007-05-13
Love this book. Patterns are beautiful, clear and easy to read. This is a book that any devout lover of crochet should have in their collection.
Reproduction worth having.......2005-12-06
A lovely way to decorate your home or you can just add one or two to any room in your house. This can also be used to make gifts and I can tell you from experience, everyone appreciates a gift made from an antique pattern.
A beautiful book.......2005-08-20
This is a wonderful boook, full or charming and beautiful patterns. The designs are all fine thread crochet. Around 35-40 of them are filet, and these are the nicest filet I've ever seen. The most beautiful are the edgings and the floral designs. Many of the patterns are for larger items, such as table cloths or bedspreads, but all of these (excepting the filet)are made up of a smaller motif repeated many times. This enables the crocheter to choose a design and make whatever they want from it; one could use a tablecloth design for a bedspread, or a bedspread for a runner. The directions are as clear as any I have found, and the results are just spectacular. Yes, the pictures are in black and white, but as it is all white crochet on a dark backround, it is not very important. A wonderful book, certainly well worth the price.
When Crocheting was an art.......2005-01-16
I learned to crochet about 30 years ago, but when I started again about 10 years ago it was hard to find the old patterns. I was happy when I found this book in 1997. The patterns in this book use threads in 30, 40 and sometimes 60 and 80. It's a fantastic resource for delicate and drop-dead gorgeous crochet projects like vanity sets, bedspreads, dinner sets, edging and insets. I prefer these older patterns because they really take the skill of crocheting to it's highest and most artistic level.
However, if you are used to following "symbols" instead of written instructions, this might be difficult for you. But what is art without a challenge? I highly recommend this book.
Beautiful.......2004-10-31
I picked up a copy at the library, but now I know I'm going to have to buy it. I started dog earring pages to Xerox, and found that I had dog earred all but three pages. I have been looking for books that would tell me how to make lace, real lace, beautiful and detailed lace. I am bored by most modern patterns that claim to be lacy. These are true lace patterns for edgings, runners, tablecloths, bedspreads. The motifs and squares look amazing, even in fuzzy black and white pictures. I can hardly wait to see what they will look like when I'm holding them in my hands.
