Book Description
For the many people who love hand-dyed fabrics but think they are too difficult to make, Vimala McClure presents an easy to do technique that is convenient and gentle on the pocketbook. The author says, 'I use methods that are simple to understand and that can be broken down into steps to be completed on separate days.' Because her dyeing process is done in small batches, there is minimal mess to clean up. Worked in small jars or a plastic bin, luminous fabrics with exciting patterns can be made in a total of two to three hours. Using widely available dye products, which are listed in the resources section, the author provides dye recipes for mixing batches of 12 different colors or, for more variety, 24 colors. She shows how to make intriguing color mixtures, single-color gradations and multiple color gradations. With a cookbook approach and step by step photos, the author demonstrates tie dyeing, Shibori-like dyeing, fold dyeing, and overdyeing, each method illustrated with examples of wonderful fabric swatches and quilt blocks. She also describes how to make simple stencils for sponging or spraying to add pizzazz to any fabric. AUTHORBIO: "Quilting gave me a creative outlet when I was raising my children. Each quilt I made fueled my creative fire. Soon I was making 3 and 4 quilts at a time." Today Vimala McClure writes and inspires creativity. It is her mission to promote creative quiltmaking. REVIEW: McClure approaches the somewhat daunting prospect of chemicals, rubber gloves, and stained sinks wi th enthusiasm, but also with practical sense. She knows that busy women need ways to fit these processes into their other responsibilities, and so breaks the processes up into small, manageable pieces that can be done over several days....The technical details are nicely balanced by photos of many styles of quilts that make use of hand=dyed fabrics.- Planet Patchwork Brookbriefs No. 20

Fantastic Book.......2007-05-13
Love this book. Instructions are very clear and procedures are quite easy. Detailed instructions for dyeing fabric. Love it!
What to Know about the whole process........2006-03-03
This book tells you all of the details of fabric dyeing. It will allow you to decide whether or not you even want to attempt it. In my case I decided that I don't. Unless there is a fabric you really can't find, (hard to believe) or you simply like big messes, why bother.
Great reference for beginner.......2003-07-09
This book is an excellent reference for beginners. It treats the subject like a cookbook, walking you step by step through each "recipe" so you can proceed with confidence.
I especially recommend this book for quilters and stitchers who want to know enough to get the desired results for their projects without drowning in more information than they need.
Inspiring yet practical.......2003-05-01
Fabric dyeing is one of those things that appeals to our primitive finger-painting urges. It's messy, colorful, and very satisfying. Vimala McClure's book for beginners, which grew originally from a popular magazine article, is just the ticket if you've been contemplating giving this a try. McClure approaches the somewhat daunting prospect of chemicals, rubber gloves, and stained sinks with enthusiasm, but also with practical sense. She knows that busy women need ways to fit these processes into their other responsibilities, and so breaks the processes up into small, manageable pieces that can be done over several days. Several different dyeing techniques are explored, including pickle-jar, fabric-fold, tie-dye, and stencil methods. The technical details are nicely balanced by photos of many styles of quilts that make us of hand-dyed fabrics.
Great for 1st time dyers & those looking for a refresher.......2003-03-18
This is a terrific new book on dyeing fabric. If you've ever thought about trying to dye your own fabric but were afraid of the mess or complicated steps involved, read this book and try out the recipes. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy, fun, and relatively mess-free it can be.
Vimala gives clear, step-by-step info on "pickle dyeing" in small quantities and with a minimum of space and mess, as well as info on tie dyeing, stencilling, and fold dyeing. The steps are well illustrated and several samples of each technique are shown. In addition, a gallery of Vimala's quilts, which use fabrics she's created, is in the back of the book.
I'll admit to being biased. I made two of the samples used in the book - it was great fun having a chance to play with Vimala's fabrics and dream up ways to show them off. Also, I own two of Vimala's quilts. The fabrics she created for those quilts is splendiferous as are the quilts themselves (Sarasvati is one of the most amazing pieces of artwork I've seen). One of the methods I've used for dyeing my own fabric is a variation on Vimala's pickle dyeing.
Even though I'm an experienced dyer, I plan on spending some time going through the recipes in the book and "cooking up" some fabrics using the techniques Vimala beautifully describes. While I don't expect to abandon my Ann Johnston books on dyeing, this book certainly can share the shelf with them.

Book Description
California,
here we come!
Faith's Pa says there's no room on a wagon train for Josefina, a chicken who's too tough to eat and too old to lay eggs. But Faith loves her pet. Can Josefina show Pa that she still has a few surprises left in her?
Customer Reviews:
The Move West.......2007-04-10
The Josefina Story Quilt, by Eleanor Coerr is a sad and happy book.
Faith is a girl and she has a pet hen, named Josefina.
Like lots of other families in 1850, Faith's family is going west to California. Faith wants to take her pet hen(Josefina) with them but her Pa says no. Finally her Pa lets her take Josefina along.
On the way lots of sad things happen:2 old people die along with 3 oxen. Faith makes quilt squares on the way to tell what's happening.
Josefina saves the day at the end.
I would reccomend this easy reader to you. It has a bittersweet ending. I say this book is 4 out of 5.
Wonderful Book.......2006-11-03
My six year old kept checking out this book at her school library over and over. She can read the entire book to us. She even dressed up as Josefina for storybook character day at her school. It is a great book full of love and adventure. The first time you read it you will cry but your child will read it over and over again.
Cute little story.......2005-09-08
Our seven year old loved this, kind of a "Little House on the Prairie" type story only vveerryy simple. A girl doesn't want to leave her hen behind on the trip west by covered wagon. In the end, the hen gets to tag along, and the events that ensue become quilt squares pieced together to make a quilt which the girl treasures long after the hen is gone. Cute, simple illustrations. Perfect length "chapters" for those to whom "chapters" are very important! :) Thumbs up.
The Josephina Story Quilt.......2004-12-21
The Josephina Story Quilt by Eleanor Coerr. It is interesting because I learned that quilts made in the 1700's helped people remember the days going west.
Our favorite audiobook.......1998-10-21
We never tire of Josefina's story. It was a great introduction to the western migration, and sparked my daughters curiosity about the prairie and the period. I would recommend it.

Beginner Knowledge.......2007-05-12
So far seems to be a good basic book for the beginner
Great book! Excellent for a beginner both in sewing and quilting!.......2007-03-18
I first bought Sewing 101 by the same publisher and was impressed by the easy-to-read and follow directions as well as the patterns at the end. This book gave me confidence to try different types of project. I highly recommend it!
Great Choice........2007-01-18
I have sewn for years but I have never quilted. I picked up a lot of new tips and techniques from this book. I highly recommend it to any one.
Quilting 101: A beginners guide to quilting.......2007-01-04
This book was helpful on a limited basis, but covered too little to be of value after your first project. If you have a basic knowledge of sewing techniques, much of it is unnecessary.
Perfect for Beginners.......2006-11-28
Got this book for my wife, who hadn't really sewn much before she decided to try quilting. This book walks you through the basics of how to sew, then gives great advice on how to start quilting... washing and ironing the fabric, how to sew large sections to save time, etc. Great book for starters. There are lots of patterns in here, but only one "quilt", the rest are smaller projects to get you started -- so if you're looking for a book with a bunch of quilt patterns, this isn't it. However, this is a great book for anyone just getting into quilting.
Book Description
As long as readers can sew a straight line by hand or by machine, they can use the 12 patterns in this book to make fabulous quilts, and each one will be perfect the first time. Suitable for individual learning or a classroom setting, the book includes patterns carefully selected with the beginner in mind. Skills are taught in a sequence that helps new quilters learn, practice, and reinforce good technique. For each pattern, hand and machine directions are shown side-by-side, so learners can switch back and forth between the methods as they wish. Unlike other beginners' books that devote little space to color and fabric selections, Quiltmaking for Beginners provides specific guidance for each pattern, so that quilters make the right choices and end up with quilts they love. - Includes 10 piecework and two appliqué projects, all easy-to-make and tuned to the needs of beginning quilters - Presents machine and hand techniques side-by-side so learners can switch back and forth, completing some steps by hand, other by machine - Features information about color and fabric choices, quilting tools, and resources that many beginners may not be familiar with Lynn G. Kough is a nationally known teacher with a particularly strong reputation for teaching first-time quilters. She travels nationwide to teach at major conventions, workshops, and seminars.

The perfect introduction to a Japanese sewing craft. Step-by-step instructions for stitching patterns inspired by natural motifs, including 60 traditional patterns, and suggestions for basic sewing projects.
Customer Reviews:
a good reference.......2006-03-14
I found this book to be a useful introduction to sashiko. It begins with a history of the craft and shows examples of how sashiko has been used in the past. It goes on to introduce a good variety of stitches, with reasonably easy-to-follow directions and diagrams, and finishes up with some sample projects. The book doesn't get five stars, though, because for a book that's supposed to be for beginners, it was rather a dry read, didn't have enough step-by-step illustrations to really show how things were supposed to come together, and could've used more interior color photos to show readers more examples of finished sashiko. So, it's a good, useful book, and I do recommend it, but I expect I'll wind up using it more for a stitch reference than an idea source.
Great book for starting off in Sashiko Quilting.......2001-03-01
Traditional Japanese country clothes were quilted for warmth. The quilting patterns on the natural indigo dyed hemp or cotton are called sashiko and often take the form of repeating, geometric patterns.
Karen Matsunaga gives a nice background into the daily life of her Japanese family, and also the history of some of the traditional patterns.
The book has five complete projects, plus sashiko stitching pattern. The patterns are printed on grids, with helpful directional lines to show the direction in which the stitching should take place. Recommended for anyone starting out in sashiko quilting

A lovely collection of formulas and stories.......2005-09-06
Beginners seeking a user-friendly quilter's guide will find the vivid colors and unusual designs of M'Liss Rae Hawley's Get Creative! to be inviting. M'Liss provides only 8 projects to serve as a foundation for gathering skills, but each easy project offers important lessons in color and design and offers enough flexibility for beginners to incorporate their own designs and interests. A lovely collection of formulas and stories.
Inspiring.......2005-08-09
The book is great, I like the format and the clear instructions. Beautiful photos. The price was also great. I like saving money for more fabric.
Get Creative.......2005-06-13
This book is excellent. I would recommend starting at the beginning and reading through each project. It is set up as a workbook and one chapter leads into the next. A color wheel is a must and really helps one select the fabric for each project. Not all sales persons in the fabric store have the knowledge that you will obtain from this book. Thanks M'liss. Great beginner's book.......2004-09-07
I finished reading the book this morning and am impressed that the authors have covered just about everything anyone needs to know to start the hobby of quilting. Their tips were great and the text is very understandable. In fact, I recommend this book over Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!! (McClun & Nownes) and Quilter's Complete Guide (Fons & Porter) as a book for those starting out as well as a refresher for experienced quilters. It doesn't go in to blocking a quilt, but that is a skill beyond what I think is appropriate for a beginner to need to know.

step by step -awesome!!.......2005-05-28
This was exactly what I wanted and needed to get started. It has great detail, step by step with photos to help. It couldn't be better. If you are a construction paper and crayons kind of person when it comes to starting something, this is the book you should have to get started with quilting. I can't wait to make a few of the ideas for christmas presents-great practice.
Great book for beginners.......2003-06-21
This was one of the first books I bought for quilting. I have really no sewing or quilting experience and I enjoyed it. It is very informative and easy to read. I am about to tackle the placemats and the instructions and pictures will be a great help. I think this is a great book for a beginner like myself!
Great Book For Beginners.......2002-08-11
This is a very nice book and shows you many projects that you can tackle and finish even if you are a beginner.
It is with nice and clear instructions and is certainly a book to have.
An ok book........2001-01-17
This book has a lot of useful information and illustrations, but as far as the projects go, I only found one that I really wanted to make. The others consist of: placemats, a sewing machine cover, a wall hanging, etc. I was hoping it would have more actual blanket-size quilt projects, but I guess with it being a book for beginners they thought it best to start small. Still, the only reason I use this book is to refer back to information and illustrations.
A MUST HAVE for beginning quilters.......2000-12-06
I am teaching a class of young women at my church how to quilt. Many of them have never used a sewing machine. This book gives the very basics of the sewing machine and accessories, quilting supplies needed, fabric and batting information and how to select the colors for projects with splendid color photos. All of the projects are items that can be used in your home: hot pad, nine-patch pillow, checkboard placemats, etc. Each project teaches several new skills with excellent directions. I wish I owned this book when I started quilting 10 years ago. If you ever wanted to learn to quilt, know someone who is interested in quilting or want an good reference book, I highly recommend this book.
