    I loved this book. Especially since I will soon be entering the 40 generation and there is so much anxiety and uneasiness of what will happen during the menopause period that it was very refreshing to read such a healthy, happy, and natural way of looking at menopause/perimenopause period... It helps ease the anxiety..... And the exercises are good refreshers and easy to incorporate into everyday life...Great book

    Fabulous book that has good solid information on fitness and nutrition for life. Honestly and frankly discusses the physical and emotional problems many of us experience in our forties and beyond; including discussion on ways to alleviate those symptoms. The exercises are easy to follow and can be done in your own home without buying lots of expensive equipment. This is a great lifetime plan!

    I had high hopes for this book, and was disappointed. It offers nothing new, just rehashes the same information that can be found in countless other health/fitness books. It might be helpful to you if you've never bought a book on this subject matter before, but if you've already read and/or owned books on health and fitness for women, save your money. I only wish I'd had the time to really look closely at this book before my 30 day window of opportunity to return it had passed.

    Great book! This should be a staple for women over forty who want to stay fit and feel great. Being a personal trainer and pilates instructor myself,
    I found the information regarding exercise and nutrition to be very practical, and easy to fit into any lifestyle, which is key to staying with any program. Kathy Kaehler is role model for us all; balancing family, career, and womanhood. Hurrah!

    This book contains good solid diet and exercise strategies, that mirror the information given in other recent diet and exercise books such as The Abs Diet and 5 Factor Diet/Fitness. My only complaint about this book is that with the way the author structured the book you find yourself in the middle of your workout madly flipping pages to try to find out where the next exercise is! For this reason I prefer to use the above mentioned books for my regular workouts, but this is a good book for when you get bored with other routines.

    I used to hate exercise, but I hit 35, and I knew I needed to do something. I couldn't afford a personal trainer, but this book is almost like having one (minus the cheerleading). Ok, so I was a little leary of the title, but once I started reading, I was hooked. This isn't just a book of exercises. Rational, realistic approach to good overall health, not just weight loss (though his fat-reduction program showed results within just a few days).Idiot-proof once you get the exercises down. Workouts are planned for you (by body type, by day) so there's no guess work. Shows you where to start regardless of your fitness level. Great combination of sculpting and stretching to ensure you get the shape you want. The program focuses on nutrition, free weights and an exercise ball plus cardio, so you can work out virtually anywhere. Thanks to this book, for the first time in my life, I look forward to working out. It's helped me better understand my body, adjust my lifestyle, and it feels terrific!

    I had a month off of work and I started using this book. I just started week 4 and I feel better than I have in years and After 2 weeks I noticed a difference. Already I'm looking forward to the end of week 4 and then 6. If I was working full time the regiment from this book would take more discipline than I have, but if you have the time it works. In my opinion the truly best part is the workout schedule set over a 6 week period. It mixes it up and keeps your body from figuring out what's gonna happen next. A close 2nd is the nutrition guide which is not super in depth but is easily understood. I am 26 and have found great benefit in the way I feel in terms of my health after the first 2 weeks. I am also a pretty thin guy. My one gripe about the book is that there are 2 or 3 exercises for me anyway that should have been labeled advanced. I could not do them more than 3 or 4 reps at first.

    I liked "Hot Point Fitness" and when I stuck with it, got good results. This is a lot of the same material, but organized more effectively for different body types. I think his philosophy of lots of variety, stretching, and spot-training is effective and easy to follow.

    The nutrition info is definitely not as well-organized or detailed as the cardio & work-out aspects of Steve's program, and at times is downright contradictory ("forgo yogurt"...then 2 pages later..."one of your meals should consist of yogurt"). It's also pretty strict and unrealistic for most people (I suspect) who cannot be total slaves to their food intake.

    I purchased this book because I was such a fan of Steve Zim's last book "Hot Point Fitness", but was ready for a new equally intense program. What I like about this book is it keeps your workouts changing constantly. There is absolutely no way you can get bored because you are always switching up the routine. I also like that there are seperate plans to follow for not only males and females, but also for each specific body type. Unlike Zim's previous book, you could also perform each workout outside of the gym. With a set of weights, a matt, and a fitness ball, these exercises could be done just about anywhere. Please note, if you really want to see results, you must follow not only the workouts, but the very specific diet as well, which is pretty tough.

    Staying Fit and Fabulous is certainly a challenge over 50 and this book is an amazing tool for success. It shouldn't even be evaluated with the perky-chatty books it shares the shelves with. The book is quite well thought out from the medical illustrations which help me focus and visualize, to the spiral spine of the book inself which lays flat as I coordinate my excercise routines. I find myself using it to help "cure" my aches and pains from simple daily chores and have finally found how to relieve that backache at the end of the day. I am amazed how dramatically my posture, energy and stamina have improved. I have been singing the praises of this handbook since the day I found it.

    Great book on training for the over 50 set. I bought 4 copies after the first one. My physical therapist wanted one, my Mother at 89 took my first copy. I also bought my health consious sister a copy. Outstanding mterial. Cris does a wnderful job making fitness fun and easy to understand. Everyone over 50 needs a copy!

    I am 73, and as a person who has worked out all his life, I would not characterize this book as a work on strength training. It barely qualifies, at a very basic level, as a fitness manual. Also I think that some of the exercises outlined are ill advised for someone who is elderly and frail.

    If you have ever worked out in the past, are over 50 and want to get back in shape, this isn't the book for you. You already know much more than you will find here. I returned this book.

    As a 52-year-old who has always shunned weight training for fear of injury, I think this book is terrific, for three main reasons:
    1) The authors realize that many older exercisers are very out of shape and/or recovering from past and present injuries, and their exercises are shown in several variations, from very easy to moderately difficult;
    2) There is a lot of emphasis on core body strength and proper form, which not only helps you do the exercises safely but also improves your posture (which I think is one of the best ways to look younger (have you ever noticed how you can tell someone's age without seeing their face, just by observing how they stand, walk and sit?)
    3) It's hardcover, but with a spiral spine, so you can lay the book open flat on the floor next to you as you do the exercises (why aren't all fitness books made like this?)
    Even people in their 70's, 80's and beyond can benefit from this book.

    This book is fantastic! The eating program has menus and shopping lists, and the workout portion is easy to follow with step by step photos. My favorite part is it's broken down into babysteps, so you're not overwhelmed. Lots of common sense in this book, and lots of encouragement.

    For women over 40 this is a good start or a better building block. I started exerciseing with a local gym recently and have refered this book to them for we women over 40. I was not in shape when I started and this was challenging enough to not get discourged. Great job!

    this book is for you. I will admit, I am not a big fan of Denise Austin in general, but this book has given me comfort in knowing that I'm not screwing up, my body is just changing. And this books is helping me change right along with it, making the adjustments I need to, to be fit and fabulous. Just two years ago people were commenting on my slimness, that was my 40th birthday, now at 42, nothing is where I left it! But I'm confident this book will help me get the pieces back where they belong and that I'm going to feel wonderful again, both emotionally and physically. And she's real, there's no gimmicks just good education about getting older, common sense and things that anyone can do. THANK YOU DENISE!!!

    I see now the book's on sale. Lots of ideas and tips in here. Nothing earth shaking, but good ideas on how to implement all the things we know we need to do. I like that it's comprehensive--a little bit about a lot of things--skin care, diet, exercise, emotional tips, health, etc. Ms. Austin is inspirational because she is loaded with "can-do" attitude. So overall, a good value.

      Don't be misled by the title or other reviews. This is not a pattern alteration book (though each body anomaly has a useless little picture of one pattern piece with little pictures of scissors all around it showing where they want you to cut said pattern piece.) This book can be helpful as long as you understand what it really does and this is what you are looking for.

      The book basically lists each body type and then shows you 5 or so garments that would be a good choice for covering the body flaw. As one reviewer said, many of the garments shown are not currently in style, but that is not to be counted against the book as much as it is against the garment industry. Some styles cover certain body shapes better than others and it is unfortunate for you when the style that looks best on you is not currently in-vogue.

      The book is helpful in steering you to make correct garment choices for your body characteristics. The challenge is to purchase or make these garments in up-to-date looking patterns.

      If you are looking for an excellent pattern alteration book, look no further than the excellent "Fast Fit" by Sandra Betzina.

      By the way, don't pay any more than 10 or so dollars for this book.

      I bought this book for my sewing class; however, I don't like it because it doesn't have as much substance as the "Fitting & Pattern Alterations" book. In addition, it is over-priced. I like chapters 2 and 3 best out of the whole book. There is a typo on page 3, bullet #4. Most of the clothing sketches are dated; I've hardly seen anyone who dresses in those styles that were illustrated in the book. I personally don't believe that anyone can wear any style because each person has a different figure shape, height and weight. As for the style tip, I'd rather pick up a good how to dress fashion book.

      No matter how a sewer tries, learning to fit can be a difficult task. Judith Rasband tries to explain fitting in a different way than the other fit books do. It is worthwhile reading to explore a different point of view on the subject.

      I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking better fit in dressmaking. The seam method of pattern alteration is pretty easy and straightforward. Judith presents alterations for the bodice, skirt, and pants. With the information in this book, you can alter your pattern for square or sloping shoulders, wide or narrow hips/waist, thin arms, rounded back, and many other necessary alterations. I did not find the bust alteration to be very helpful to me, however. I prefer other methods, but I often use the seam method for widening my waist and hips in my own patterns. Additionally, Judith offers style suggestions to flatter various figures. It is an interesting and useful book!

      Chef Kelly has wonderful and interesting recipes. Given the glut of "diet" books on the market, it's hard to see this as a serious or innovative diet book. Ms. Kelly exults so in down to earth living that writing a book about being sexy and fabulous seems to contradict the persona she promotes. I picked up her book because I wanted to read her ideas about preparing Mediterranean food. This book is fun but not comprehensive by any means. I especially liked her recipes for various condiments to be used to perk up dishes.

      There is a lot of condescension and stereotyping in her writing, as an earlier reader commented. Why does she assume her readers are reluctant to try new foods or haven't heard of certain ingredients, or don't eat with their families, or subsist on fast and other fake foods? It's naive to think families with working parents are going to prepare little plates of yummy things for a meal just after arriving home from work, helping with homework, and before leaving for Little League, ballet and music lessons.

      Also, it may seem to boost her "diet" concept to remind us how slim she is, but her mantra is simplistic. I kept wondering: Has she experienced any of the real life issues which which make being thin difficult (travelling for work, childbirth, health issues, middle age, hours spent serving others and not oneself, heredity, etc). Wow, I found myself thinking, I too would like to live in a small town, have a huge garden, put up produce and create new recipes - what fun! But alas, I grow flowers and herbs in an exurban plot, try a new recipe on the weekends and will have to look forward to visiting one of Ms. Kelly's wonderful sounding restaurants in my travels....

      This book absolutely changed the way I think about eating. If nothing else, Kelly's straight forward and easygoing approach will have you slowing down at mealtime and appreciating your food in a new way.

      While the scope of the book is very broad, that is exactly what I liked about the book. The recipes and way of eating are not limiting but more of a guideline. Much of the text is a bit repeptitive, but the principles are worth repeating.

      A wonderful book featuring high restaurant style for Mediterranean foods. There's a great 7-day meal planner that emphasizes portion control. If this book is too 'high style' for you, the 'down home' Mediterranean cooking featured in Mary El-Baz's "Easy and Healthful Mediterranean Cooking" may round out your cookbook bookshelf.

      This book is an inspiring addition to food and lifestyle books--Chef Melissa Kelly offers wise advice on what--and how--to eat, noting the flawed and dysfunctional relationship many Americans (myself included) have with food. Some of her key points are obvious: eat fresh, quality foods that are well-prepared, and slow down long enough to enjoy them (and realize when you've had enough). Fresh really is better--I've tried several recipes from the book, and find them easy to manage (though not simple), beautiful to look at, and delicious. My children (ages 6 and 3) are hooked on Kelly's pasta alla puttanesca recipe (I did cut down on the red pepper flakes). Kelly encourages a small glass of wine with dinner--the book is big on flavor, and low on restriction. I feel like I'm learning about food all over again, and I'm inspired by Chef Kelly to eat to be sexy, fit, and fabulous.

      The medical community's been telling us for a long time that the Mediterranean way of eating--lots of fresh veggies and fruits and whole grains, not so much meat, and olive oil--is good for the heart and for longevity. In her book, Mediterranean Women Stay Slim, Too, chef Melissa Kelly reminds us, with exuberance, that we eat not only for sustenance but also for pleasure. We like to eat!

      James Beard Award-winning chef Kelly takes readers on a tantalizing journey through the tastes of the Mediterranean. Far more diverse than being Italian or Greek, the recipes of the region are not bound by the borders of countries. Rather, they draw from the rich resources of all the lands that border the Mediterranean Sea and from the sea itself.

      With chef Kelly's recipes and guidance, I can make elegant, sophisticated dinners for guests or simple, serve-yourself meals for my family. And she can make a number of dishes by herself, even shopping for fresh ingredients at our local Farmer's Market.

Such simple concepts, yet ones that have lost context for us in our crazy lives where meals are often an odd junction between science and haste--counting grams of this and calories of that jumbled in the rush to get something to eat. If we are what we eat, as the saying goes, then I'm all for eating to be sexy, fit, and fabulous. Aren't you?
