Excellent Reference.......2007-01-12
A one-stop resource for the history and technique of this ancient craft. Want to know when the first paper mill was established in your state or Country and what was used for raw material? Look it up in the detailed chronology. A must have book for any paper aficionado!
very informative.......2002-08-27
Everything you've ever wanted to know about papermaking and more. This book has a lot of detailed information about the history and techniques of papermaking all over the world, but is so detailed it can be very tiresome. Definitely reads more as a textbook than light reading.
An Essential Historical Primer for Papermaking.......2000-10-18
"Dard Hunter is still recognized as the world's foremost authority on paper and papermaking. This is the classic work on papermaking, used as a text and reference in classrooms, museums and libraries." More historical than how-to, you'll find just about every aspect of papermaking covered in this book. Over 320 illustrations show actual pages from rare books and scrolls from every corner of the world, scenes of past and present-day papermaking, tools, materials, and watermarks. A two-page map illustrates the text to trace the 1000-year journey of papermaking from China to Europe, and a chronology of paper and paper related developments over 4500 years.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on Marbling.......1999-09-01
What keeps this from five-stars is that I have not seen any other book as comprehensive as this one.
The history portion seems exhaustive, and I began to keel over with the descriptions of what happens when you marble (the paints form a 'lip' with the carragheenan to prevent them from blending together), but the color plates are worth the price of the book alone.
There are facsimiles of old German marbling swatch books (which I'd love to get a copy of).
This book is for those who love marbled paper (and fabrics) and who want to know about the history. Might not be the best First Book on marbling, but the process is best learned in a classroom setting, IMHO.

One of the Best Books on Papermaking by Hand.......2005-04-02
Packed with inspiration, how-tos, details, instructions & great images. A must for every papermaking and papier maché library - pulp painting, pulp spraying, sculptural techniques with paper. Wow!
Beautiful!.......2002-06-01
This wonderfully illustrated book examines the history of papermaking and also outlines step-by-step instructions for creating distinct handmade paper.
A wonderful resource book for any paper enthusiast!
Delight yourself making handmade paper.......2000-05-11
One of the most interesting books I have ever seen. This is a very important book for all the people who makes handmade paper. In this book we can find since how to make a papyrus sheet, one of the most antique techniques of making paper, till paper sculpture, a very actual and sophisticated work. The explanation about the way to do is simple and detailed, and the photos are very clear, so we can compare the final results when we try to experiment what author proposes.
A great source for creative use of papermaking techniques.......1998-08-24
This book is one of our favourites - we have nearly 30 books on the subject ! There are plenty of photos of processes and enough information to get anyone with a creative bent well on their way. Photos of a range of artists' works give additional inspiration and a good glossary gives the beginner a sound grasp of papermaking terms. Definitely recommended as a book all aspiring papermakers and paper artists should have.

With excellent instructions and beautiful photos, Paper Art explores numerous aspects of a versatile, age-old medium that still offers today's crafters opportunity for innovation. The first section covers traditional papermaking techniques, outlines necessary supplies and details several methods, then explains how to add color and texture and how to make shaped papers. The next section, "Decorating Paper," encompasses embossing, stenciling, stamping, marbling, batik, various printing methods, orizomegami (the Japanese art of pleating the paper to create dye resists), and paste papers. "Papercraft Techniques" demonstrates manipulative methods: collage, papier-mâché, weaving, pleating, pop-ups, and sculpture. For additional inspiration, Paper Art also showcases striking works by 50 leading paper artists.

More on the art than on making the paper..........2007-10-12
Wow - talk about the variety of art projects now available with paper - this book covers them all in moderate depth. I would not recommend this boot for a focus on paper making, but if you are an art teacher and paper is realatively cheap (depending on type and quality), this is a great book and the projects can be adapted to a classroom setting. I have to admit, it did give me ideas useful for for modifying my own handmade papers. I do wish more depth was given to the book on paper making and even on some of the paper art projects - but for the price, it is an excellend deal choice for the many aspects of paper and art. So expand your horizons with paper design projects and get this book!
Amazing--covers all techniques to add decoration to paper.......1999-01-23
A friend of mine lent me this book and I went right home and ordered it from Amazon. I am new to paper arts and I have a few other books with sections on decorating your own paper (marbling, paste papers, block printing, batik, etc., etc.) This is the only book, though, that gives enough guidance (including photographic images of all the tools needed and the steps involved) to give me the confidence to do the gorgeous techniques on my own. I can't wait to receive my own copy!

Book Description
This is a concise and critical treatise on the most important analytical methods in wood chemistry related to pulping and papermaking. The emphasis is on principles and important applications, needed not only in academic research, but especially for industrial applications. It starts with basic information on the chemical composition with analytical techniques of wood and wood components of the main groups (carbohydrates, lignin, and extractives), proceeds to the methods used for the characterization of the chemical properties of wood and pulp fibers (with special emphasis on the fiber surfaces), and concludes with the methods applied to the analysis of pulping and bleach liquors, papermaking waters and effluents, and those used for the analysis of inorganic components in wood and pulps.
Customer Reviews:
The Complete Guide is the BEST guide to papermaking!.......2003-12-03
There's an old adage that says, "Never judge a book by its cover."
That was certainly true for me when I first looked at Arnold Grummer's Complete Guide To Paper Casting. My initial reaction to the cover (& many of the 'projects' was--How 70s can you get?
Fortunately, I followed the adage's advice and read a few chapters. Result? I found a valuable addition to my how-to library.
The authors (Arnold & Mabel Grummer) have created a work which is rich with detail. They offer techniques, tips, history, ideas & more in such an easy to read manner that whatever your interest &/or skill level, you will find yourself casting pulp before you know it.
Saavy enough to recognize that many crafty types want to get started without reading 'War & Peace', the authors provide readers with a quick start-up in Chapter 2. I made my first paper cast within thirty minutes of reading the instructions--(took me twelve minutes to find the blender!)
From that point on, I found myself enjoying (& learning) so much. I picked up a vocabulary without needing to consult a dictionary; began exploring additives & molds & generally having FUN with paper casting in ways I had not considered.
With the current trend in paper crafts/arts, I heartily recommend this book to scrapbookers, altered-bookers & collagists. I also recommend it to anyone who has ever asked 'What If?'
Excellent and true to the title.......2002-02-04
I love this book. Arnold Grummer is fantastic. This book explains everything you need to know about paper, and making paper, in a very simple way. I especially love the beginning of the book where he gets into the technical aspects of what IS paper and why we can make our own. There are also many full-color samples of handmade paper that I found very inspiring. This book will keep you busy trying all the embellishment and inclusion techniques, too, including botanicals, pin drawing, and coloring. I'll be using this book for a long time, and I recommenend it to everyone.
A most inspiring book for new and experienced papermakers!.......2000-02-08
The day I recieved this book I could not put it down, I had to read the entire book! From the start, it is an encouraging and creative book to be used in every aspect of the papermaking process. Unfortunately the only parts I felt were weak would be for paper artists who want a totally acid free paper. His comments on that though, do need to be believed because He is the curator of the Dard Hunter paper museum and a paper chemist. He feels that the best way to make that type of paper is to start with recycled paper that is already acid free. Those artists who create from plants alone may not find enough information to please them, yet many of His techniques can still be applied with their experience to create very artistic paper. Even beginners can tackle the most professional results with this book in hand. I feel even children could achieve surprising results with the processes he shows, step by step, using mostly home supplies. He shows you how to make your own mold and deckle too! The "moon paper" recipe he shows you how to create is worth the price of the book alone! Out of my entire library of paper books, this does stand on its own for the most part and for that reason, I recommend it for all beginner and intermediate artists and every papermaking teacher.Your creative juices will flow with this book!

Book Description
This atlas presents the information on fiber identification necessary for a fiber analyst in the field of pulp and paper. The book discusses the structure of the raw materials and the features used for the species identification in pulp. It describes the identification of 117 fiber species. Of these, 83 are wood fibers and 34 are of nonwood origin. The tree species are from all five continents, 29 species from Eurasia, 38 from North America, and 16 from the southern hemisphere and the tropics. Informative micrographs, identification tables, and distribution maps help the species differentiation.
This richly illustrated book can be recommended to everyone interested in fiber identification.
