I enjoyed looking at the beautiful presentations.... but I would have enjoyed it better if it had shown how to do the beautiful ribbons...

4 out of 5 stars Great book but expensive.......2007-06-18

This is a beautiful book with very clear instructions for each beautiful project and with wonderful pictures. It gets the creative juices flowing. However, it is expensive for a one-time read.

5 out of 5 stars Cure for winter blahs.......2007-01-11

Received this book on a wet, dreary winter day and was immediately cheered up. The pictures of the papers and ribbons are beyond fabulous. Full of great ideas-makes me want to go out and buy gifts just so I can wrap them.Have already ordered some paper from Carolyn's extensive list of suppliers. I really haven't much arts and crafts inclination so don't think this book is just for people with talent. I keep it on my coffee table and everyone who ses it is delighted with the colorful photography..

    Book Description

In Japanese culture, it is customary to put as much care into the wrapping of a gift as into choosing the gift itself. The way a gift is wrapped and the material in which it is presented are considered expressions of the giver's feelings toward the recipient. Now, using techniques that have been part of Japanese tradition for generations, Chizuko Morita offers readers innovative and unique ideas for using the Japanese art of wrapping with cloth in very contemporary ways. In a matter of minutes, a swatch of cloth known as a furoshiki, can be fashioned into an elegant wrapping for a CD, a book, a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates, even a soccer ball. And unlike paper gift wrap, if you get it wrong the first time, just undo the knots and start again. Not only are the wraps fool-proof, they rely on only three basic knots. Beautifully illustrated with four-color photographs, engagingly written and with clear, step-by-step instructions, Gift Wrapping with Textiles includes sections on: The Enjoyment and Advantages of Wrapping with Textiles Selecting a Cloth Techniques Tying Attractive Knots The Three Basic Knots Pleating and Twisting Caring for Textiles Gift Wrapping Interior Wraps for the Home Table Settings History Traditional Japanese Furoshiki

    Book Description

Origami meets the age-old art of swaddling in Baby-Gami and no longer does baby wrapping have to be an intimidating undertaking. Easy-to-follow instructions illustrated with step-by-step diagrams and unbearably cute photographs make it a cinch to execute flawless wraps. The first part of the book offers a variety of cocoon-like styles for newborns; the second shows parents how to create slings for "wearing" older babies. Once new parents master the basic swaddles and slings, they can branch out into more pizazzy terrain. Try the Picnic Wrap, the Glamour Sling, or the satin and tulle Gift Wrap. With advice from experts and real parents, tips on baby-carrying, baby-soothing, and a rundown of items not to wrap your baby in, Baby-Gami is a must-have for any new parent.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars ADORABLE!!.......2007-07-31

This is such a sweet, cute, unique book for new mommies. I often buy it as part of a shower gift. There are very clever ways to wrap your baby if you ever get in a jam such as a paper bag or in a map. The babies are adorable too!

2 out of 5 stars poor babywearing section.......2007-05-26

Yardages are completely wrong for babywearing. I wasted $$ buying a pieced of fabric that was too short to make the wrap described in the book. I had to rebuy...so instead of of a DIY less expensive wrap, I might as well have bought a commercial one. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT

2 out of 5 stars Cute pix and cute for swaddling ... but very bad babywearing section.......2007-02-10

As a seasoned babywearer and leader of a babywearing group, I was hoping to find in the babywearing section of this book some simple baby wrapping techniques that I could share with friends by giving this book as a shower gift. Unfortunately, the babywearing section is bad enough that I simply cannot give the book as a gift.

The instructions for the "front sling," "back sling," "office sling," "'your ad here' sling," "french sling," and "housework sling" are all fatally flawed because they say that these "slings" can be accomplished with 5 to 6 feet of fabric. No one -- NO ONE -- can accomplish these "slings" with that little fabric ... not even my 5-year-old daughter could carry a baby doll with that little fabric. I'm an average size 8 and need at least 4.1 meters of fabric for these tying positions ... and I can get away with 4.1 meters because I'm a seasoned wrapper and am skilled at getting the fabric tight; beginner wrappers my size usually prefer even more length to work with. Also, the pictures all show the babies facing outward in the "back sling," which is an unnatural and uncomfortable position for both the baby and the person carrying the baby. The "hip hugger sling" directions are also seriously flawed, stating that this position can be accomplished with 3 to 6 feet of fabric ... I can do this with no less than 5 feet of fabric. Also, the picture showing the "hip hugger sling" shows the baby leaning way out away from the person carrying her ... which is not just uncomfortable for everybody but is also plain dangerous. The photo of the "twice-the-fun sling" shows one of the twins in a very unsafe position. Instead of sitting in the sling with her bottom lower than her knees and with the fabric pulled up to the back of her legs, the baby is almost standing against the side of the person carrying her with the fabric barely covering her bottom. One good jiggle and out she would go!

Because of these (and other) serious flaws in the babywearing section of the book, I simply cannot recommend this otherwise cute book to anyone. If a person got the book and was interested in doing any of the "slings" shown in it, the person might just throw in the towel, or baby blanket, or whatever, and completely give up on babywearing. That would be a shame, because with good instructions, carrying a baby in a simple piece of cloth is safe, comfortable, beautiful, and easy ... and is an excellent tool in any parent's toolbox.

3 out of 5 stars Adorable photos and humor, not substance.......2007-01-26

The first half of the book is adorable and the different wraps are well illustrated and explained. They are basically the same wrap many ways. I would NOT recommend this book as anything but a fun little gift with some useful info.

The author gives sling directions that do not work with the length of fabric given and the directions she writes! I defy anyone to use an unaltered length of 4- 6 feet of fabric and criss-cross it around your body to make the slings shown. Even with 12 feet of fabric, I had a hard time getting the thing tied and the baby put in there. If you are into baby-wearing and want a nice gift for your preggo friends, I suggest a Moby Wrap rather than this book!

5 out of 5 stars Become a Bionic Wrapper Mom!.......2006-09-13

A friend recently gave me this book. I thought I was doing pretty well with swaddling - sorting more and more things out as I went along. Then I gave this book just a quick read, and the next swaddle I did was a million times better. It also has lots of fun little tidbits about the benes of swaddling and "baby wearing." Not to mention really adorable pix.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A charming book with a lot of thrifty and green ideas in it.......2006-11-04

I got this book today and after flipping through it for a minute, knew I would want to set aside time to read it in its entirety this evening. I read the entire book and all the instructions in one sitting, then went back over my favorites.

Seo is a charming writer with some great ideas for gift-giving and wrapping. In a book this size (it is only 140 pages), I would hope for meaty ideas, all or most of which I will actually use, and in this I was not disappointed. Danny shows us some amazing ways of bring both green and frugal, showing us how to make some quick and original gifts that anyone would be pleased to receive, and how to wrap them to best effect using things around the house, or green alternatives to costly and non-environmentally friendly packaging.

A few favorite projects are the leaf and grass labels, the photo watch gift tag (or just gift!), washable soap gift tags, natural box fillers, making a gift box out of an old hardback book, terra cotta blooming boxes, and work-shirt fabric wrapping.

There are a few clunkers, for one he suggests using unusual things as ribbons for wrapping, like old Christmas lights or belts, but I find that when I get that creative with the wrapping, people get really confused about what they are supposed to do with the belt or lights used to wrap the gift. I don't like making giftees feel that they have to hang onto a silly something because it was around their present, and I don't like the idea of the person then having to throw away such a clunky object when perhaps it could have found new life at a thrift store.

But on the whole the ideas are surprisingly doable and practical, and I was totally inspired by his green attitude towards life in general. This is a big hit!

    5 out of 5 stars I Can't Wait "Til Christmas..........2006-10-17

I can't wait until Christmas because Danny Seo's book has given me many new ideas as to how to give and/or wrap gifts that are pretty, fun, and environmentally friendly.

I always felt guilty after the xmas season, throwing away all those wrappings. But, in this book, Seo presents 4 chapters--Cards and Tags, Boxes, Gift Wrap and Bows, and Handmade Giving. Each chapter gives ideas on how to reuse something you already have as a creative wrap, or how to use something that's renewable, from nature, to give that thoughtful present.

I love the holiday or gift card luminaries idea; the gift for candle lovers; the money ring; the shopping spree gift card bag, to name a few. There are many more ideas to inspire the reader to create unusual presents that will be remembered. They do not look tacky or too "homemade", for the most part. And they don't require a lot of odd materials (there is a resource section in the back of the book, if needed).

A friend of mine always gives gifts in unique wrappings. I can't always remember the gift, but I do always look forward to and remember the presentation. She has taught me that thoughtful and creative gift giving is more important--and memorable--than you'd expect. And this book can help me do that.

For more details, I'd recommend that you buy the book (made out of recycled paper, of course.)

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-02-11

What can I say about this author? I LOVE her and read every one of her books thoroughly. She has great ideas, presents them simply and I just love her taste! More! More!

4 out of 5 stars Great pictures, but lacking ideas.......2004-05-19

First off, I do not regret buying this book. The photography is simply phenomonal, and it is inspiring just to look at the pictures. But unfortunetly, there are not really many gift giving "ideas". So if you bought this book looking for a new twist on gifts, you will be disapointed.

Ideas include putting flowers from the garden into bottles, or using big "floppy roses", or colored packing peanuts. Not to origional, but still beautiful. She does convey the importance of giving thoughtful gifts, not just store bought items. Some reviewers had said that this is just a repeat of what is shown on her television show. I personally don't watch the show, so it's not a repeat for me.

Without the photography, I would have rated this book a two. But the pictures are what inspires you to give creative and thoughtful gifts.

    1 out of 5 stars A bit of a let down.......2003-04-08

I really liked her other Shabby Chic books and enjoy reading and looking at them this one was a bit of a let down.It would have been better in a magazine format

1 out of 5 stars Rachel Ashwell on Rachel Ashwell.......2002-03-19

After already reading 2 of Rachel Ashwell's books I decided the third was one too many. These ideas already appeared in her show or other books. I think we all know how creative Rachel is, what a great mom she is, what her pallette consists of, that she can afford to shop all over the world, etc. Enough already! Don't waste your time. Martha Stewart has more creative ideas.

    1 out of 5 stars ..........2002-01-11

What a disappointment! There are no projects with directions, and what the author deems inspirational ideas consist of such things as SEVERAL PAGES describing why it is nice to stick a loving note in your kids' lunchboxes. Mind you, I would have been delighted with a book of inspirational ideas -- but this sure wasn't it. I'd be ashamed to give 99% of the items as gifts; they're both tacky and yucky. The few decent ideas (gifts of herbs or flowers, citing the meaning of each) are old hat if you read any books, magazines, or online crafts lists. This was a huge disappointment and a colossal waste of money; what could have been wonderful instead seemed heavily padded to use up space, rather than providing viable/innovative ideas (or even good ideas, never mind original). I returned mine to Amazon.

Filled with step by step photos. Most useful were: how to wrap a melon, polygon and triangle, how to make 7+ different kinds of bows from ribbon and how to wrap a wine bottle. The last tip is especially useful since I never liked the look of those wine bottle gift bags.

With this book, I will not be afraid of buying nice but oddly shaped gifts. Overall it's a compact technical primer but dont expect anything innovative or overly artsy.

Gift-wrapping has become big business, as busy people flock to the gift-wrapping departments of their favorite stores, and to high-end personal gift wrappers. I thought this would be a good book, as I love to make my gifts look unique. But, this book was boring and predictable. Everything in it has already been done. Don't waste your money!

    Book Description

Much care and thought go into gift giving. And the way a gift is wrapped can say a lot about the care and thought that went into its selection. This easy-to-follow, idea-packed volume draws on traditional forms and techniques of Japanese wrapping to create unusual, attractive, and surprisingly
simple ways to wrap presents of all shapes and sizes.

The Japanese combine a love of ceremony with an equally strong fondness for giving and receiving presents. They have developed a sophisticated system employing many interesting and eye-pleasing ways to wrap all kinds of gifts. This tradition is evident in techniques such as layering several sheets
of paper to create a color contrast or subtle shading effect, wrapping part of the gift and leaving pan visible, using origami-like folds to decorate or add interest, and fashioning soft wrappings from large squares of colorfully patterned cloth called furoshiki.

The author draws on his extensive knowledge of this Japanese tradition and his experience in other forms of paper craft, including doll making, to create sixty-six imaginative gift wrappings.

All sixty-six ideas are shown in beautiful color plates and accompanied by step-by-step instructions that take you from the materials you need to the finishing touches. Let these exciting and creative wrappings add a new dimension to your gift giving.

The folding instructions and matching photo's are very clear.
The ideas in the book are original (at least they seem so to me).
I voted 3 stars, 'cause it's not really my style. I've warmed up better for other gift wrapping books.

There is something so beautiful and special about a thoughtfully wrapped gift. Forget those garish papers with bright colors that assault your senses. Learn to wrap things so that the wrapping itself is a gift. This book shows you exactly how to wrap your gift with the subtleness found in so many things Japanese. You don't even need boxes for most of the numerous wrapping techniques, and therein lies the beauty. Highly recommended, you won't ever want to part with this one.

3 out of 5 stars This is book is OK........2001-11-28

I expected more ideas on how to wrap beautiful presents from this book, but was only moderately satisfied from its content. This is certainly one of the better books out there on amazon.com about beautiful gift wrapping. However, I have seen many more beautiful ideas on how to wrap gifts in Asia. If only there was a book that described and taught more ideas on gift-wrapping.

5 out of 5 stars This beautiful presentation oozes with artful tradition........2001-01-10

If you're searching for artistic and elegant ways of wrapping up gifts, you will fall in love with this book! Each idea is beautifully presented and diagrammed in detail. There are wrapping ideas from the artfully simple and spghisticated to the ultimately elegant and intricate...gift wrapping for the beginner paper folder to advanced challenges. They are all wonderful with that wonderful touch of Japanese artistic grace that make the outside of the gift as intriguing as the inside and can make the mundane look magnificent. Even when I'm not putting the ideas to use, I find I love to look through the book over and over.
