    Book Description

Captures the unique style of fashion maverick Iris Apfel and her exuberantly idiosyncratic personal chic.

With remarkable panache and discernment, Iris Apfel combines styles, colors, textures, and patterns without regard to period, provenance, or aesthetic conventions. Now in her mid-eighties, she is a unique style icon.

Over ninety sumptuous color plates, photographed by Eric Boman, show off a selection of Apfel's extraordinary outfits on wittily posed mannequins, some sporting her trademark outsized spectacles. The originality of her style is typically revealed in her mixing of Dior haute couture with flea-market finds, Dolce & Gabbana lizard trousers with nineteenth-century ecclesiastical vestments, pink Lanvin worn with ropes of Navajo turquoise. Apfel's eclectic pieces might come from a Parisian couture house, an American thrift shop, or a North African souk, or they may have been made to her own design in a tiny studio.

Detailed captions describe every aspect of the outfits, including names and dates of designers, plus full information on fabrics and accessories. A selection of audacious accessories also comes under the spotlight: a giant necklace made of bear claws, a turn-of-the-century Indian horse ornament worn as a necklace, a parrot's-head brooch in colored glass and rhinestones.

The book includes an introduction by Harold Koda, director of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and an essay by Apfel herself, describing her lifelong love affair with style and illustrated with vintage photographs from her personal collection. 169 illustrations, 149 in color.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Dorothy Draper: an inspiration to her field! .......2007-10-12

As one of the previous commentators stated, this book is a wonderful book in terms of historical significance to the Decorating/Interior Design field, but this book is certainly not a "how to" book on decorating. Therefore, if you are looking for a basic "how to decorate" book, then this book may not be a way to go.

    HOWEVER......

If a person is buying this book as an historical reference book to their home decorating (or interior design) library, then this book would be a wonderful addition.

For example, if I were a person majoring in a form of home decorating field, then this book would be of tremendous value. WHY?...because so many ideas that Dorothy Draper implemented are still being used today or still inspiring home decorators today!! (eg: if you were to look at Jonathan Adler's current design concepts, you will see alot of Dorothy Draper's influence in Jonathan's work). Thus, Dorothy Draper's influence to the home decorating field is truly immesurable.

This hardback book is large in size. The photos are amazing. Most are in black-and-white since that is how the photos were orignally taken. But still,....the author describes the colors that would have been used in the book's B&W photos, and THAT helps the reader so much! I could certainly visualize what the B&W photos would be like in color, thanks to Carlton's wonderful descriptions.

5 out of 5 stars The Height of Glamour.......2007-07-12

When High STYLE was "in-style" Dorothy Draper was the queen of design... Every page reflects her understanding of space, light and perfection!!! This isa great read for the design professional as well as the casual reader. Her life story and her work are inseperable - she loved beautiful things and had an un-erring eye for the dramatic. "In the Pink: Dorothy Draper --America's Most Fabulous Decorator" is a visual treat as much as it is a fun read! As an iterior designer I see her design principles are as easily applied today as it was in the age of glamour. I would give it a 5!!! all across the board.

5 out of 5 stars The gorgeous terror of excess, or "How I was blinded with ornament".......2007-06-01

While Kelly Wearstler was still in the womb, Dorothy Draper was jetsetting the style world in a solid gold Deusenburg that was fueled exclusively on Chanel no. 5. Her contribution to the interiors and custom fabricated furnitures and fixtures has forever seared a scar into the homes of hollywood and beyond. Liberace himself would be sent into a seizure over Dorothy's hallucinagenic oppulence and fearless approach to her indulgent, decorative torture chambers. Get this book and blow your mind.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous book.......2007-04-06

It took a while for me to finally decide to drop that kind of coin on a book, but its absolutely gorgeous and worth the price. Very cool to page through and see her imprint on decorating and design through the 30's up to now. You page through a Domino magazine and see a cool black and white modern print on a white french chair and think 'wow' and then you page through the book and see that she was doing it in the 40's. Just makes me wish I had my own chandelier fabricator and my own master plasterer as those seem to be her tricks of the trade. Beautifully put together and one of the few decorating books I actually wanted to READ every word and not just page through for the pretty pics.

3 out of 5 stars As History & Biography: Bravo! As Design Inspiration: Blah!.......2007-04-02

I bought this book for my wife, who is an artist and color consultant, because I thought she'd enjoy seeing an iconic designer known for her bold use of color and thematic environments -- especially done on a grand scale. And, yes, you will find page after page after page of grand ballrooms, hotel lobbies, mansion-size dining rooms, and so on here.

80% of them, unfortunately, are photographed in black & white. So much for the bold use of color.

There are two great color photos -- pages 161 and 207 -- that show off Draper's lush, vibrant style. But the rest of the book is either slightly out of focus color photos, color illustrations and old ads, or black & white photos. It's just sad in how it under-represents Dorothy Draper.

"But be fair," you say. "Dorothy Draper's peak took place before the advent of color photography." That's fine. But this book is a perfect example of the rare publishing project that truly is BEGGING for Photoshop colorization. On page 53, for example, the text refers to a House & Garden magazine article which declared one of Draper's most visible design projects, Hampshire House, to be "a gold mine of decorating ideas, particularly in color." And yet all four photos on that spread are in black & white, as are the spreads before and after it. A very good Photoshop artist -- and several do perfect, true-to-life work -- could give those old black & white shots the vivid, vibrant colors that would represent Dorothy Draper properly and accurately without changing Draper's style one iota.

As I say in my title, as a history (of the advent of superstar designers) and a biography (of Draper), this is a very good book that should not be overlooked. But how can you do a history of bold interior design, or a biography of a top interior designer, without SHOWING the vivacious use of color which was central to both? That's like doing a bio of Abe Lincoln without including the Gettysburg Address.

So is this worth seeing? Definitely. Worth buying used? Probably. Worth buying new? Only if you're rich.

I'm a lighting design major in college, and no matter what I take a class in, Gillette's book is the standard must have for all tech (and acting) majors. It's a requirement for stage tech 1, and then is used again through out the college carreer, and I have heard people even refrence it after they graduate. The best places to start for new techies are this book, and the 'backstage handbook'

    5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2007-06-06

Got this books last christmas, and I was blown away. Have always been interesting in design, fashion and history. This book has it all. Great design on the book (maybe a little hard to handle since it quite big in size), great photos, lots and lots with detail from the garments, and the best, it give you a look in to the past.

5 out of 5 stars Best Illustrated Historical Fashion Volumes Available!.......2007-04-09

This is the most beautifully illustrated book available on the history of fashion. I have looked at many, but none are so thorough and definitive for the 18th to the 20th centuries. The publisher lists the book at $49.99 (unbelievable for what you get!). It has been reprinted several times since I first became aware of it. Each time I have missed my chance to get a copy -- It seems to sell out quite regularly. After almost losing hope, I was finally able to get a copy of this latest edition!
The current edition is a set which consists of two large volumes. The first covers the 18th and 19th centuries, and the second is devoted to the 20th century. These two tomes are in a sturdy outer case. The illustrations are clear and detailed, making it easy to examine the construction used for the garments, and also are displayed so that one can see the overall beauty of the craftsmanship. They are truly works of art! Text is at a minimum; the books consist first and foremost of these beautiful illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars A nearly perfect tome on Fashion history.......2007-03-13

Everything is perfect in these two volumes. Was terribly upest when the first issue (single volume) was discontinued, but this one tops it. Clear photos, specific research and exceptionally well laid out. My students beg to look at it, and THE PRICE! Incredibly inexpensive for a book of this sort.

Makes a great gift- and can substitute for barbells when needed.

    5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book!.......2007-03-02

When visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art I found this book, and let me tell you, what a find! It is quite impressive in size, detail, length, and quality of pictures. The books range from the 18th century to present. The set consists of two magnificent volumes. Whether you love fashion or are simply interested in how people in centuries before us lived and dressed, get this book! By the way- this makes an amazing coffee table book. Not many (female!) friends and relatives can leave my house without taking a look at the set. Would make a great gift as well. Well worth the price.

    4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars really.......2007-03-01

I bought what I think is a compiled version of these two books from a local bookstore. It is similar length and has the same title. I have long been searching for a good fashion history book and this one is fabulous. Nearly every page is a large photo of a real antique costume. There is a nice balance of close-up detail photos and full photos, as well as undergarments and accessories. You can really watch the progression of fashion through nearly 300 years. I also like the amount of text that is written; just enough to explain the style progression and the political environment of the time. A picture is worth a thousand words and trying to explain a garment in text is pointless when you can just look at the picture. The only thing I wish was different is that the modern section (from about the 70's on)features primarily avant garde experimental clothing, not the stuff we actually see on red carpets and runways.

    Book Description

FIGURE DRAWING FOR FASHION DESIGN offers a concise, topic by topic guide to acquiring and perfecting these skills, concentrating on the female form. The coverage provided means that this book is ideal both for those who want to apply themselves professionally to fashion design, and for all enthusiasts of drawing the human body. Fashion plates are the primary means of visualizing ideas and concepts in costume and fashion design. To give an accurate impression of what is in a designer's mind it is vital to have complete mastery of the rules of figure drawing. Here, realism and anatomical precision are the chief values, whereas for costume and fashion, stylization and exaggeration are ways of adding individuality and verve to a plate, and of focusing attention on specific elements.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Okay........2007-05-15

This book did help me with my drawings. I needed to know proper proportions and how to draw fabric, etc., but I agree with everyone else: the figures are very "superwoman"ish and, in my opinion, showing way too much skin! I had to put a paper cover over the book so my children wouldn't see the back cover! I was disappointed to find out that the typical design drawing has it's proportions exagerated to make the figure look very tall and thin, but I guess I should have seen that coming with the way today's fashions are. Fortunately the book also provided a scale for real-life proportions.

2 out of 5 stars Figure Drawing for Fashion Design Review.......2007-05-09

I was abit disappointed in this book, I found the illustrations quite old fashioned with an 80's vibe, not what I was expecting. Even the clothes in the illustrations had Dallas style shoulder pads. I'm studying fashion design in college, so I was expecting to be inspired, through the use of different media and rendering techniques, which unfortunately didn't happen. But some of the templates for poses are useful and it would be ok as a starting point.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for fashion artists-- maybe 4 for everyone else.......2007-04-26

This is the kind of book that deserves 5 stars simply based on the current competition: many other fashion books are either too expensive, or are just not done well enough, to justify a click on the "Add to Shopping Cart" button.

It's illustrations are about 89% black & white (in number), and 100% detail the basics of female fashion figures- no men! It's true that many of these women look a little on the stiff or masculine side; they actually sometimes look like Mick Jagger(!). Still, they generally look reasonably good, and nearly all are done in a very clean & consistent pencil style, which contributes to an overall professional look here. In 216 pages, about 26 pages include partial or full color. There are no photos or backgrounds, just figure drawings on white paper. About a quarter of the figures are nude; the rest having at least a little bit of clothing. The beginning of the book details basic close-up views of the head & figure, but most illustrations detail entire figures on the page. I really like the application of simple, 3-dimensional basic shapes to fashion figures here. It's a *highly* streamlined look at the basics. If you're a fashion artist I can't see why you wouldn't want this book, but if you're mainly interested in figure drawing in general, this is probably just a 4-star effort. People interested in developing more detailed figure drawing skills might also want to check out: The Figure: The Classic Approach to Drawing and Construction by Walt Reed, Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm, and then How To Draw Manga Volume 22: Bishoujo Around The World (How to Draw Manga) by Hikaru Hayashi. Check 'em out!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good.......2007-03-22

Well, the other reviews are right on. This book lays an incredible ground work for drawing fashion figures. It is definitely worth buying.

However, I highly reccomend to alter the figures a little unless you are illustrating women from "American Gladiator". The figures are very muscular, sometimes a little thick, and their lips are gigantic. Frankly, they are a little terrifying.

    Enjoy the book!

This was a great book with fabulous sketches and ideas for upcoming fashion designers. The book presents sketches for all the different styles and cuts of clothing. Highly recommend!!

    Book Description

Vintage aprons and modern designs are turning up in movies, magazine spreads, upscale shops, and hip retail venues like Anthropologie, whose trendy line of aprons is selling as fast as they can stock them. The Apron Book is an infectiously enthusiastic guide to aprons, old and new, that are suddenly everywhere.

Aprons take us back to our favorite place¿hearth and home. Vintage aprons help us remember home and family the way they used to be, while bright and sassy contemporary aprons confirm that nesting is all the rage. Actress and trendsetter Julia Roberts has a closetful of vintage aprons. Celebrity custom-made apron auctions have become an annual event for several popular charities in the past few years.

The Apron Book provides full-color photos of new and vintage aprons from the author's collection, patterns for four basic apron styles and myriad variations, recipes, tips on collecting and preserving vintage aprons, and heart-tugging stories from the author's traveling apron exhibit. The book also explores the heyday of aprons and looks at the various roles aprons still play when worn in the kitchen, around the house, by the backyard grill, on the job, and for special occasions.

Warm and inviting¿but like an apron quite practical!¿this book is a celebration of a great American icon and reminds us of what we loved about the people who wore them.

    5 out of 5 stars "Apron Heaven".......2007-09-30

Wow! What a delightful book! Not only rich in history and memory, but you are given the instructions to make them come alive in the "now!" This is in the "fave" section of my studio!

    5 out of 5 stars Delightful read.......2007-08-31

I found "The Apron Book" book to be absolutely charming and fully engaging. Old enough to remember aprons similar to those represented being worn by family and friends, as well as being an inveterate collector of fabric, this work prompts pleasant memories as it nudges me toward my machine.

5 out of 5 stars The Apron Book: Making, Wearing, and Sharing a Bit of Cloth and Comfort.......2007-08-23

This book is a good gift, coffee table book, or reference book. It has lots of pictures of authentic vintage patterns, vintage looking aprons, and ideas for color and cloth. The vintage patterns she displays are very usefull and can easily be reinvented with modern commercial patterns.
The patterns she offers are alittle disappointing, especially for children. I was looking for a Mom and kid combo with a bib type pattern. The childs pattern has no bib and was not gathered/sewn to the waiste band but like curtins, gathering as it falls.
There is a "no frills" commercial type pattern for Mom on the back cover and the book gives good details for the patterns she describes in the book.
To me the strenght of her book is in her pictures for ideas, and you can pick up patterns that are exactly like what is pictured in her books commercially. Personally I liked her book, I like idea books with vintage styles. This book can sit on your self until the time you need "inspiration" or a quick apron idea for a gift you want to make.

Great find!! Such pretty illustrations and wonderful personal 'apron' stories. I loved it from cover to cover. Bought it for a gift but cannot bear to give it away now.

4 out of 5 stars Well photographed book with cute APRON STORIES.......2007-08-13

This is a cute book about aprons. The photos are just marvelous---very bright and colorful!

Each sub-category, in each chapter, comes with a funny or sweet story about the various "special" aprons photographed.

I am giving it a 4-star rather than a 5-star because with over 500+ collectible aprons that the author owns, I wish she had photographed even a small array or "collage-photo", showing more of her pretty aprons. Maybe she could have added a few additional pages to her book, with a combo-photo of more of her aprons.

The author mentions so many interesting aprons that she owns in her collection (but did not show), and so I wanted to see a few more aprons she mentioned throughout the book... (for example: maybe even a photograph or two of a "collage" of just 40 more aprons would have been great).

However, maybe once the author sees how well her first book on aprons is selling right now, she will write a volume #II next time---which I will buy.

    Book Description

Full of ideas for fashion design—but not confident when it comes to drawing figures? This wide range of templates will help: they include figures in movement from a variety of angles, different body views and poses, and lots more. Photocopy them, enlarge them, or use them as a guide.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Ugly drawings, useless "templates"; try another book.......2007-05-21

While the tutorials on proportion are somewhat helpful, the drawings, unfortunately, are ugly. The poses lack the edgy and modern look found in other books and among top design houses; they are stiff, and the drape of the fabric is all wrong: it is generalized, and the way it is drawn not only adds nothing to the garment. The folds make it impossible to tell the weight and type of fabric, and in many cases, are not in accordance with the fit or how any fabric would behave.

The details are inconsistent. Some faces are attractive, others unsightly, poorly drawn; some figures have decent poses with some interest, most of the others perch themselves awkwardly on the page, slouching over and oddly angled. As for the idea of using templates to trace, there is nothing in the adult figure section worth tracing, nor is the layout really meant for this, contrary to the title

The section on drawing children in better than the other parts of the book, as are the renderings. They actually manage to capture much of that cheery childhood feel, the cute faces and expressions, and some playful gestures.

Overall, I do not recommend this book, especially when there are so many others that feature great drawings, have helpful tutorials, and generally provide the reader with a solid foundation on fashion design. The Best book on fashion illustration is "Fashion Sketchbook" by Bina Abling. It may cost much more, but it is worth it. If that's too much, keep looking around--this book was a waste of money, and I would not recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars Deceptive title.......2007-04-19

If you are hoping to use these templates to draw over for your portfolio, this is NOT the book. If you want a better idea on how to illustrate for your portfolio, this IS the book. This book goes in more depth on fashion illustration than any other book I own. It should be called "Fashion Illustration for Dummies" Great Book!

2 out of 5 stars Figure Templates for Fashion Illustration.......2001-10-01

This book promises more than it delivers. The basic templates are useful, but in all other aspects this book is lacking.
The written information is scant and repeated - very superfluous. Mr Ireland's style is very outdated and uninspiring for those hoping to make a career out of fashion - in any form. I would recommend this book only as a basic early tool for novices hoping to improve their figure construction.
For inspiration I recommend Laird Borelli's FASHION ILLUSTRATION NOW.

4 out of 5 stars great for copying.......2001-08-08

this isn't the 'how to draw the fashion model' book you wish taught you everything you ever needed to know. However, its good to have around when you just need to pump an idea out. It has women, men, and children.

4 out of 5 stars Figure Templates For Fashion Illustration.......2000-10-16

This book is an excellent resource at a resonable price. It is more than a primer. I'd recommend it to anyone, experienced or novice, who designs/illustrates fashion.

Madeleine Vionnet's greatest distinction as a designer was her discovery of the bias cut. Cutting patterns along the bias forces the fabric to cling to the body and move with it, which created her trademark look of draped, form-conscious clothing. When designer Issey Miyake first saw a Vionnet dress, it was like the first time he saw Winged Victory at the Louvre: "I thought then that the statue of Nike had been reincarnated in the dresses by Vionnet. She had captured the most beautiful aspect of classical Greek aesthetics: the body and movement." Vionnet's long career as a dressmaker and designer began with the 20th century. Always conscious of women's bodies and inspired in part by modern dancer Isadora Duncan, she soon dispensed with corsets and other constricting garments, and used barefoot models to present her first solo collection. Though simple, her dresses were never plain; the use of a Cartier necklace as a halter strap is a classic Vionnet innovation. This inimitable combination of comfort and glamour made Vionnet's clothes a favorite among European nobility, Hollywood royalty--notably Marlene Dietrich, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Katharine Hepburn--as well as socialites and other trendsetters. Close to a century after its introduction, the bias cut remains an important element in clothing design.

Madeleine Vionnet is a tall book that echoes many of the designs inside. It is filled with contemporary photographs of the clothing, period pictures shot by Man Ray and Steichen, design sketches, and, perhaps most interestingly, patterns for the clothes. The accompanying text traces Vionnet's evolution from an 11-year-old seamstress, through her days apprenticing at the famed Callot Soeurs couture house in Paris, and on into the design empire that secured her an enduring spot in fashion history.

    Book Description

Back in print at last, with a ravishing new cover, Madeleine Vionnet is "not only the best book on Vionnet, but perhaps the best book ever on a fashion designer" (Out). Madeleine Vionnet (1876–1975) was the greatest dressmaker in the world. Considered a genius for her innovations with the bias cut—the most difficult and desirable cut in clothing design—she has a fanatical following. Vionnet was a maverick, her results spectacular. She dressed the stars of the '30s, invented new pattern-making techniques, and eschewed corsets for her models. Vionnet's dresses are virtually un-copiable and highly coveted by vintage clothing collectors. Madeleine Vionnet is the definitive study of this venerated artist. Illustrated with more than 400 photographs, line drawings, and watercolors, it also includes 38 original patterns for Vionnet dresses. As the Art Deco Society of L.A.'s newsletter has said, anyone "interested in Art Deco or fashion must have this book."

This book is an absolute dream right through from the beautiful hard cover to the wonderful photographs, history and patterns. I am a Designer/Patternmaker and is the most beautiful book I have ever bought on fashion. Betty Kirke has put a lot of love and care into this treasure and any student of fashion, especially patternmaking and draping has to purchase this and learn a whole lot about bias cutting.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book.......2007-05-21

    Madeleine Vionnet
A fascinating book on Madeleine Vionnet. Betty Kirke has plunged into the personal story, the career, but mostly the clothes, this avant garde fashion designer has made in the 20's and 30's. All young fashion designers should be grateful to Betty Kirke, the talented author of this book, who has given them the chance to study the patterns, the style, the technique of Madeleleine Vionnet.

1 out of 5 stars misleading title; glad I checked it out from the library before purchasing it........2007-06-04

The title is an absolute lie. There aren't even general sketches to look onto as templates! This book, chock full of details on how to become "inspired", may help if you need assistance focusing on what motivates you--but otherwise, it's not going to teach you at all about fashion illustration.

    5 out of 5 stars fashion drawing.......2007-03-22

This is a well done and well illustrated book, and can be used by novices in Fashion drawing,or by professionals.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-10

Takes the beginner the next step. Gives good information on and basics on being a fashion designer. It is the book you keep in your library and go back to as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Focuses more on the Creativity and not the Technical.......2007-01-06

I gave this book four stars because it did what I wanted it to do.Granted I would've loved it even more if there were thorough instructions on figure drawing. The book only skims over the basics of drawing the fashion figure so if you need help with the more technical aspects don't start here. This book is great if your like me, someone who already knows how to draw the fashion figure but needs to find an edge, more ideas... It should be called the fashion illustration drawing course because it does focus more on turning someone into a better illustrator.

In my opinion buy the book. For the price you will learn some really creative and whimsical techniques.
