Excellent book!.......2007-02-05
I'm a beginner, unfortunately without hours a day to dedicate to practice. I do like to sit down with my pad and some sticks whenever I get a chance though. That being said, this book is very easy to understand, with no super-technical text or music notation. It's something anyone can pick up and start using right away.
Coupled with my Korg MA-30 metronome, this book has helped me improve so much that I decided to keep a log of metronome speeds over the last few weeks. Every time I sit down to practice, I write down the metronome speed for each exercise that I can play at with no mistakes. I have gone up 10 beats per minute (as high as 14 on some simpler ones) over a few weeks, in just a few minutes a day! Well, it's a lot for me :)
The funny thing is, I haven't even made it past the first page of exercises yet. For a beginner like me, they are difficult enough for now. When I get good enough at the first page, I'll move on to the second, and so forth. This further cements the book's value, there is enough material in here for a lifetime of learning, and if you're already a pro, enough material to keep you conditioned.
I'm still very slow but I can see benefit every day in both speed and timing. If you get this book and stay with it, I bet you will too. I recommend keeping a log so you can track your progress! Positive reinforcement will only make you want to practice more!
A must have for any drummer...........2006-10-13
I had been playing about 15 years before I discovered this book and it's companion book "Accents and Rebounds". I had been gigging heavily, practicing hours and hours a day (mainly rock/fusion/funk), owned 20+ books, 15 or so videos, but somehow never owned a copy of these two books. These books are full of simple exercises I truly think anyone can do. After practicing just the few first pages of both books at different tempos and at different volume levels for a few weeks I noticed a drastic improvement in my playing skills. I mean it when I say drastic. I could play much faster than ever before, but more importantly I could play cleanly and effortlessly. By this I mean, that when I later improvised on the drum kit I could certainly play many things I couldn't just a month prior. This is after playing and practicing hard for 15 years! Studying these two books took me up a whole "notch" in just a month! Also things that gave me trouble before or were just played sloppily were now clean, tight, precise, with a much broader range of dynamics and accesnts and I could play them much faster if I wanted or needed to. While on paper these are basically exercises for just your hands, you can certainly do these patterns as written but with your feet. Or do the exercises as written with your hands but make up simple foot patterns to play at the same time (i.e. qtr note kicks with hat on 2 and 4, or play the hat on the "and's", etc. your imagination is the only limit). These two books are essential and I recommend them to any drummer at any level. They won't teach you how or what to play, but they will take your technique to higher and higher levels. It has allowed me to play what I hear in my mind on the spot, just the way I want it. This was roughly 5 years ago and I'm still incredibly thankful for Mr. Stone and these two books. Every drummer I meet I try to spread the word.
Best of luck, relax, and have fun!
Control your sticks.......2006-08-07
I recently purchased book locally - sorry Amazon. Will help your snare drum technique immensely. Even looking through the book without practicing on snare or drum pad will guide your mind and playing to better musicality. One of my students seems more interested in it than other books on the market. More for snare study, although, as I usually say, once you learn it one place, you can apply it anywhere - i.e. drum set, aux. percussion, etc.
The first choice for developing your stick technique!!.......2006-03-17
This is THE book on stick-technique! If you're gonna buy just one book to use for stick-practicing - this is it! Singles, doubles, combinations and even the buzzroll are all covered thoroughly. You don't have to be a master-reader to understand the exercises. They are short, easy-read and still far from boring. The level of difficulty changes along with the speed you select on your metronome. In other words; you can buy this book and practice meaningfully with it for the rest of your drumming career. And that really says it all.
"Stick Control" has been on the market for a very long time but is still hot and recommended by many of the drumming legends like, for example, Peter Erskine.
You can use it even if you don't have a drumset. All you need is a pair of sticks and a metronome (and preferably a practice pad).
GREAT BOOK!!!
BASIC.......2005-10-11
This is a excellent compliment to any teaching curriculum.
I also recommend "Military Drum Beats" by the same publisher; but is hard to find.
Book Description
In Sticks & Stones, Lee Friedlander offers his view of America as seen through its architecture. In 192 square-format pictures shot over the past 15 years, Friedlander has framed the familiar through his own unique way of seeing the world. Whether he's representing modest vernacular buildings or monumental skyscrapers, Friedlander liberates them from our preconceived notions and gives us a new way of looking at our surrounding environment. Shot during the course of countless trips to urban and rural areas across the country, many of them made by car (the driver's window sometimes providing Friedlander with an extra frame), these pictures capture an America as unblemished by romanticized notions of human nature as it is full of quirky human touches. Nevertheless, man's presence is not at stake here; streets, roads, fa ades, and buildings offer their own visual intrigue, without reference to their makers. And in the end, it is not even the grand buildings themselves that prick our interest, but rather the forgettable architectural elements--the poles, posts, sidewalks, fences, phone booths, alleys, parked cars--that through photographic juxtaposition with all kinds of buildings help us to discover the spirit of an Architectural America.

About as bad as Hoodoo Mysteries.......2007-08-19
The caption for my review about sais it all. This is yet another "new age" fluff bunny attempt at sterilizing a tried and true folk practice into some modern hip thing for anyone to go to Barnes and Noble to pick up. If you are looking for an authentic guide to african american conjure, I reccomend Mules and Men by Zora Nele Hurston and Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic by Cat Yronwode. If you want to still use this book too I suppose it would make a good substitute for toilet paper or perhaps kindling.
murky at best sexist at worse.......2007-05-15
First off when I bought this book I had a lot of high hopes for it but upon reading it I found it to be way to water down for me to like it. First it brings up in candle magic how the view point of black as being evl? Okay black candles (not people) can be used for 'negative' work but than she spouts of with it being racist to say this. She also attacke Austin Powers about the mojo comment (can you imagine that a piece of fiction and a comedy to boot). You can't take everything so serriously and expect other people to take you serrious.
Also I didn't like how she used certian roots that were actually more used for women attracting men like queen elzibeth's root john the conquerer root can also be used to attract women not just to attract luck. Not to mention after reading this book I felt she had this reverse sexism going on. For example in one passage in women comming of age she brings up how women are all special blah blah blah, than the next passage about men comming of age it was almost completely ignorant. It almost seemed to me like she thought of men as complete dogs.
Also most of her recipes seemed completely stripped and although I am new to Hoodoo and in fact learning as I go I will not use anything Lewellan has to offer. I will just have to wait untill the Hoodoo Herb And Root Magic comes instead of trying to learn a form of hoodoo that I didn't want to learn in the first place.
Happy, informative book.......2007-01-04
This book was a pleasure to read. It's written in a style that you can't help but admire the writer and and feel that they wholheartedly believe in their subject and want to help you understand it too. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted a better undersanding of HooDoo. It's not the usual airy-fairy crap that fills the shelves.
Modern Mojo!.......2006-09-19
This wonderful book stands out among most titles Llewellyn puts out. Hoodoo is a strange and wonderful system of magic that is skillfully handled by this gifted author. Ms. Bird has a wonderful writing voice that comfortably presents this seemingly lost art.
I knew very little about Hoodoo before this book. Indeed, other than some bad horror films and cultural bias against "black" magic, this is a precious American tradition that needs more exposure. It all seems very familiar with Stephanie's presentation. West African magic is not a bad thing. Indeed, just the opposite. Much like European Witchcraft, Chinese Feng Shui, Hoodoo ranks at the top of the heap of the magical traditions of our small planet
Part aromatherapy, part cosmetic this rich tradition does nothing more than enhance the practioners life. Hoodoo can build self esteem and rebuild a culture here in the the U.S. that has gotten away from it magical roots. Either through fear or social pressure, black culture has abandoned its ethnic heritage.
Now is the time for a complete restoration of this tradition. Stephanie Rose Bird is a mid wife for this rebirth. Now, the internet has opened the door for this to happen. Hoodoo shops are starting to pop up carrying many of the more exotic supplies listed within. Most can be found on the web, if not.
Job well done!
A Good Intro to Hoodoo.......2006-08-22
I enjoyed this book- it is well written and Stephanie Rose Bird weaves the images she poses well. It also has some great practical uses, as a starter book for rootwork and mojo. It definitely is written in such a way that inspires the reader to incorporate their spirituality more fully into their daily life, and we can never have too much of that! My only qualms are that it does seem to be more of the typical "cookbook" format, which leaves foundation room to be filled to back up each working.
Book Description
Critically acclaimed author Susan Meissner’s Rachael Flynn mystery series started with the popular Widows and Orphans. In the second serving of intrigue, Sticks and Stones, lawyer Rachael Flynn receives an unsigned, heart-stopping letter:
They’re going to find a body at the Prairie Bluff construction site. He deserved what he got, but it wasn’t supposed to happen. It was an accident.
When the body is uncovered, Rachael and Detective Will Pendleton discover that the fifteen–year old victim, Randall Buckett, had been buried twenty–five years before. Is the letter writer and the killer the same person? Why would someone speak up now? And why are they telling Rachael?
Susan Meissner’s ability to weave a fascinating tale will leave readers wanting more.

Good Subject, Not-So-Good Execution.......2007-09-30
Again, as in the first book in this series, Meissner has made a good, fairly unique choice of subject matter . This book focuses on a mystery involving bullying and the horrible impact it makes on children's lives. However, I found it almost a chore to get through the book. There was too much dialogue and too little action. Not many authors can get away with that, and I don't think this writing is successful enough to carry the constant dialogue well.
Also, the plotline is confusing at times. The twists and turns aren't so much suspensful as they are tiresome. It's as if they exist only to take up space between the mystery and its solving. Meissner's climax was once again poignant, although not quite so much as the first book's. Overall, the first book in this series was better. I look forward to seeing how the third one in the trilogy compares.
Fabulous book.......2007-05-12
I loved this book. It is the second book in a series, and both books are well written and interesting. I like Susan Meissner in general because her books are not the Christian fiction fluff you find a lot of the time. She has deeper insights and asks bigger questions without trying to give easy answers. The mysteries are really intriguing too. The characters are unique and interesting, but still believeable. Overall I highly recommend this books and other Susan Meissner books.
who killed bucky?.......2007-05-09
They're going to find a body at the Prairie Bluff construction site. He deserved what he got, but it wasn't supposed to happen. It was an accident.
When the body is uncovered, Rachael and Detective Will Pendleton discover that the fifteen-year old victim, Randall Bucket, had been buried twenty-five years before. Is the letter writer and the killer the same person? Why would someone speak up now? And why are they telling Rachael?
~ back cover of Sticks and Stones
Rachael has received a letter from someone who believes her compassionate enough not to judge what he/she is claiming to be an accidental death that has been hidden for twenty-five years. The truth is now coming out whether the letter writer likes it or not, and Rachel hopes to discover the truth before the police do. Somehow, in an eerie way, Rachel knows the person who is writing the letters is innocent. Now if she can only convince the cops...
If you enjoy a book that's dedicated to exploring contemporary issues, this book might be the one for you. Sticks and Stones revolves around those ridiculed and bullied as children and the horrific results it has on them at the time, as well as later, as adults. There is one chapter in particular toward the beginning that describes children abusing other children and parents and schools failing them by not controlling them. It was quite eye opening.
Being an escapist reader myself, I still found this book enjoyable for its suspense and a few quirky characters that were written particularly well. Rachel's artsy, eccentric husband, Trace, and his equally maverick buddies, Brick and Fig, were a blast to read. From spiky hair colored teal at the tips to yak and jicama for dinner, these guys kept me chuckling.
Meissner does an excellent job of weaving backstory into the plot without overwhelming the reader. I didn't even realize I was reading book two in the Rachel Flynn Mysteries until well toward the end when I read the back cover.
So who killed the neighborhood bully, fifteen-year-old Ronald "Bucky" Buckett? Which one of his five child-victims would hate him enough to do it? Or did they work together...?
Was it "murder and mayhem" or "desperation and utter misfortune" that took Bucky's life? Rachel's about to find out...

There should be a law against abuse and bullying, but the next best thing is increased awareness, like that raised by public health programs and Susan Meissner's latest Rachael Flynn mystery, "Sticks and Stones." However, unlike the schoolyard refrain, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me," words can indeed injure a person and sometimes without remedy. This story offers some related insight regarding bullying and its dynamics and long-term results, as well as a gripping mystery.
Meissner offers a captivating puzzle that includes the presence of Christian faith in the hero, Ramsey county attorney Flynn, and her husband Trace. It is not a preachy indictment of society by any means, but a believably vital part of the couple's life. This includes a gift Rachael received via the birth of daughter McKenna, manifesting as an uncanny discernment of events and information just beyond the senses of the average person. Rachel has become a profiler of sorts, but she does not see dead people and she does not "see" the whole picture. This gift is a combination of the words of wisdom and knowledge described as Gifts of the Spirit in First Corinthians 12:4, 7-11, and are tools to use in reasoning how to help the people involved. Believably, her Christian friends do not quite know how to handle her gifts and Trace feels left out of them. Unbelievably, baby McKenna never seems to cry.
Rachael works unofficially on the case of a deceased Ronald "Bucky" Buckett after she receives a different kind of gift: three anonymous letters that predict a body to be found at a construction site, but not a victim of homicide. A 25-year-old skeleton is uncovered and the story of the dead bully and his young victims, now middle-aged, comes to light in some surprising ways. One of these involves Trace and his friends Fig, Sid, and Brick, members of a quartet of artists that sketch crime scenes for Rachael when they are not sculpting Joan of Ark and such. These sketches hold the key to the mystery in an old house and the nearby woods.
Becoming almost obsessed with the case, Attorney Flynn stalls like a flooded carburetor when she tries to control her gifts too much, overreaching to grasp all the answers. Her younger brother Jason, doing a seven-year sentence for a crime he did not commit, is the one to counsel her that she should get out of God's way and let her gifts work in her instead of trying to work the gifts. Finally taking his advice, Rachael is then able to solve this case by reaching out to the abuse victims and the reluctant murderer. She knows through her gifts that she will not be harmed in doing, so although she does not routinely race into dangerous situations in the story without thought and discussion.
This novel is fun, fast moving, and free of harsh language. It is serious about preventing bullyism and abuse and it shows people disagreeing in functional ways. Some of these lifelike characters discuss problems, compromise, and ask for help. Others show anger and sadness and put off dealing with their issues and conflicts through avoidance and lies for a season, but they confront their closet skeletons in due time. In another believable aspect of this novel, not everyone lives happily every after and not everyone has faith, but there is always hope as long as a body is breathing.
Teens through adults should like this novel "Sticks and Stones" for its excitement and commonsense approach to faith and choices as a part of daily living. It includes a list of anti-bully resources at the end, including the renowned Bully B'Ware program in Canada,
that can be shared with friends and neighbors.
Intriguing Mystery.......2007-03-21
Rachel Flynn's brother,Josh, is in prison, and a distraught mother, whose children have been taken away from her on Rachel's recommendation, tries to shoot her. In other words, life is going on pretty much as usual. Then an unsigned note arrives in the mail with a chilling message. A body is going to be found at a construction site. When the body actually turns up, it has been buried there for at least twenty years. The corpse is identified as a boy who was the neighborhood bully.
Rachel promises Trace, her husband, she has no intention of getting involved. But then more letters arrive, and Rachel is the police's only contact with the letter writer. She is drawn in some mysterious way she doesn't understand to a house in the victim's old neighborhood. Too many people are hiding secrets and some of them are going to be hurt if the investigation continues.
Rachel and her quirky friends continue to dig during the past, seeking a solution. Even though the victim was a very unplesant person, and no one really wants to see this crime solved, justice must be done, regardless of the consequences. Sticks and Stones is an intriguing story full of surprising twists and turns.

Presents an entirely original approach to the subject of pyramid building. This book reveals the connection between devices that served both a practical need for survival and a spiritual belief in gods and goddesses.

a professional discussion.......2002-05-08
Pyramid building, according to the author, should be placed not in the context of only Ancient Egyptian technology, but rather in that of Near Eastern technology. This book is devoted to understanding the methods used by the Ancient Egyptians to build the pyramids. Numerous illustrations and excellent evidence complete this professional, believable and backed-up discussion, which will be of much use to interested readers.
A compelling description of pyramid building.......2002-03-24
This work is by someone who understands stonework and is compelling in its suggestions of how the pyramids might have been constructed.
A must read for those interested in this topic.

Words can hurt. Any child who's been teased can tell you that. It takes an adult, though, to teach children how to defend themselves against those painful taunts. In Sticks and Stones, Scott Cooper, parent and former teacher and coach, wants to offer a "tool kit" of methods and exercises that are supposed to offer children ways to express themselves assertively, respond to blame and teasing, resolve conflicts, and talk confidently in social conversations--all while enhancing their communication skills and self-awareness. These are worthy and ambitious goals that Cooper complicates by mixing all sorts of metaphors into his method. Not only are these exercises supposed to form a tool kit, they are also supposed to correspond to "verbal judo" moves, which in turn are classified into different "ways" that correspond to different birds (Cooper happens to be an avid birdwatcher). The Way of the Blue Jay, for example, offers tools and verbal moves for "assertive self-expression," while the Way of the Crow teaches tricks that help children respond to blame. Get past the idiosyncratic labeling, however, and Cooper's exercises are sensible, practical, and self-explanatory. Want to teach your children how to accept criticism? Teach them how to say, "That's a good idea. I'll try better next time." --Sumi Hahn

Very Practical Information, True to Life.......2004-07-22
I have read quite a few books on assertiveness training in order to help my 7 year old deal with teasing from her peers. I must have read about 15 different books, but this book truly stands out. It's not just a bunch of hogwash about how teasing affects self esteem, etc, etc. It's real life, practical techniques easy enough to teach a 7 year old that will give her the tools she needs in dealing with the stuff 7 year olds all have to deal with. Each chapter in the book deals with a different concept to work on. So I'm teaching my daughter a chapter a week so that when she re-enters school in September, she'll be much better prepared.
Kids Need this Book!.......2002-07-17
This book is great. Kids need it! It gave my kids the actual lines they can say when they are being teased. One of the nice surprises is that it also gave me ways to help my kids deal with the whiny, exaggerated things they tell themselves. My kids use the phrases in the book and now they know what to say automatically. This has given them a lot of confidence. They feel much better in many different situations.
Another Approach.......2000-04-14
Let me say first that I have not read this particular book, but have a comment to make regarding destructive teasing.
My 11 year old was teased unmercifully last year by a group of kids after he stood up for a younger child that was the "class goat". (This book was not available; I would have used it if it had been). Suffice it to say that visits to the principal, the teachers, etc. yielded sympathy but no protection.
We finally got him a couple of books of insults and he practiced them at home. He got to be really good at the funny comeback, the creative snap.
It wasn't our favorite solution, but it did work. He's even popular this year because kids think it's funny. The teasing has lessened, though no one at this age is totally immune. At least he didn't slug anybody and he's getting some relief from the incessant comments.
So if the "turn the other cheek" approach isn't working, buy a few insult books and see if you can make the best defense a good offense.
Cooper Coaches Parents, Teachers, and the Rest of Us.......2000-04-11
Scott Cooper's book, STICKS AND STONES, is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to improve interpersonal relations at home, in the classroom among children or even in a marriage or between countries. This small, completely accessible and easy-to-read book is organized into chapters that illustrate skills by linking them to the patterns of common birds. for example, for problems dealing with blaming (The Way of the Crow) skills such as the "Mighty Might" can be learned and utilized on the spot. Scripts enlarge the concepts and are written in kid-friendly language.
Although this book abounds with good psychological principles, the author comes across as a positive coach with a humorous and compassionate style. The material and strategies are easy to grasp and draw upon solid psychological research, but are not heavy with jargon. Scott Cooper's wisdom will help fill in gaps in your own experience as a child.
Every teacher and principal should have a copy near by. I have recommended this book to many adults in my social work practice. I wish it was around when I was raising a family.
Great for All Relationships.......2000-04-07
I don't have children of my own, but I bought this book because I thought it would be helpful knowledge to have when dealing with my nieces and nephews. I was surprised to find that these skills aren't just for kids. These are basic human relationship skills that will work for anyone. I wish more adults understood and applied this type of healthy interaction. Perhaps this book will lay the groundwork for a more kind and self-assured generation to come. I recommend this book for everyone. It's not just for children.

No one expects Jujube to fight back when her repuatation takes a beating. (RL2.6)

An English Education student's point of view..........2004-10-07
The book accurately describes the reality of rumors in school culture in a way that students can connect with. It has good things to say about persevering through tough times, friendship, actively fighting social injustice, and looking past rumors and reputations to truly understand other people. Jujube, Carlos, and Sophia all serve as examples of people suffering from rumors that aren't true and circumstances beyond their control.
On the down side, the book is no literary treasure. As an English teacher, it doesn't offer much in terms of literary style or depth. It doesn't deviate off the main plot for more than a paragraph, its print is huge, and its description is plain. In these ways, it seems appealing to younger, concrete thinkers. I was also disappointed that it does nothing to discuss the moral decisions involved in sex... I can understand its appeal among junior high students - it is sympathetic to their struggles and it's short and easy to read.
Sticks and Stones.......2004-06-09
Have you have hear someone talk about you behind your back?Well in the book Sticks and Stones By: Beth Goobie.Ther is a girl named Jujube that everyone at school called her slut. When she finds out that they have been calling her "sut"she was feeling bad. Jujube didn't listen to the people but she was sad because Brent the guy that she was going to make out?but she did want to so he told the school that she did want to.
The thing I like in this book is how strong Jujube was.She wasn't doing anything to stop the girls instead she didn't listen to the people.
my recommendation is to all the people that like to read book sthat are really strong feelings.
Sticks and Stones.......2004-06-09
Sticks and Stones is a book about a girl who gets back stabbed by her so-called friend. One little action changed her whole life. Throughout the book you will find out how she tries to fix her life.
What I liked about the bookwas that it was just like a high school problem. I also liked that it was very realistic. I really liked the fact that I could visualize the characters.
I would recommend this book to 7th graders because I think they would get it more than younger students.
Sticks and Stones.......2004-06-08
The story is about a girl that thought about having sex and quickly changed her mind. The girl's name is Jujube and we never really get her real name. When she says "no" to her date, the rumors just start spreading that she is a "slut". Fortunately, she meets Carlos and he is nice and helps her out.
I like that the girl doesn't let anything get her down. I also liked it because it is stuff that happens in real life. Lots of high school girls get pregnant and end up ruining their lives.
I will recommend this book to everyone because it it is a realistic book. I especially think high school students would like this book. This could be a lifetime experience for readers.
Sticks and Stones.......2004-06-08
Sticks and Stones is a book abouty a girl named Jujube. Other girls at schoolbecome her enemies at school and start caling her "SLUT" behind her back. Then the conflict between the girls starts.
I like the suspense that left me thinking of a fight, because of the title, calling for Jujube. Especially when they wrote the word "SLUT" with red spray paint on her locker.
I recomment this book for people that have been in the same situation as Jujube. Or so you could help a friend in this situation.

Here is cooking at it's most primal - using natural elements to create food imbued with flavor, touched by fire and licked with smoke! Inspired by the Northwest Native art of plank-grilling, this modern method adapts itself to the home grill where seasoned meats, fish and seafood cook slowly in their own oils and flavors and scent not found in any other form of cooking. This is the definitive modern guide to an elemental (not to mention fun) culinary art using woods, hot stones and rocks.

You can cook more than just fish on a plank!.......2006-03-02
And I thought the only thing you could cook on a plank was fish or steak! This book has everything from appetizers to veggies to dessert! Cook it all on the grill!
Some of the recipes are more involved than I would want to do on a plank. I like the plank for simplicity, and this book goes beyond that. But if you love the plank and you love the BBQ, you'll love this book!
The Sticks & Stones Cookbook.......2003-01-31
This cookbook has shown me a whole new way of grilling. I'd never planked before and this cookbook told me how and let me know what to expect. Grilling and smoking at the same time - what great flavor and simple to do. You just have to make sure your planks are well soaked as the instructions point out.
I've used recipes from this book to entertain friends and has it ever made me look good. Several have even gone out and purchased the book.
This book proves you don't have to eat out to have fabulous meals.
Does not rate five stars!.......2002-10-11
Very disappointed. The 2 lead recipes used in the TV cooking demo as well as in the book are very good. That's it. Many ingredients are either difficult to find or unobtainable which makes some recipes practically useless, if you want to follow it for the correct results. Other recipes include the use of store-bought BBQ sauces, which can alter the taste completely, depending on what brand used. BBQ sauce recipes should have been included. Certainly not worth [the money spent on it]! Don't waste your money. Go to the BBQ or Food.tv websites for not only free, but much better results.
Salmon recipe on cover is to-die-for!.......1999-11-10
Everyone who loves salmon or who loves to barbecue needs to read this book; it's amazing what a wood plank can do to a fish! We weren't sure at first if Reader was nuts, or a genius. He's a genius! We didn't have exactly what we needed (a cedar plank instead of alder, a Copper River Coho instead of Chinook), but the results were incredibly delicious! The combination of the wood smoke and the marinade ingredients made for an exotic, but simple and fast way to prepare an entire fish. Four of us did our best to devour a 10+ lb fish in one sitting. We didn't succeed, but had a good time trying.
We are eager to try other recipes, but are at the wood-gathering stage. We wish the book had a guide to different woods and the foods they work well with so we'd feel more comfortable with our own experimenting (cooking this way is expensive if you have to go to the lumber yard for wood). We live near orchard country and have access to a variety of fruit woods in addition to apple, and aren't too far from both coastal and interior forests where different types of trees grow.
Folks who are lucky enough to figure out what to do with a few salmon every year need to try this cooking method.
Absolutely Fantastic, Unbelievable, The Best.......1999-08-17
It is incredible. I am so proud to have been able to write this book. It was definitly a lot of fun to put together. Recipes that are simple and delicious. The most difficult thing about my book is that you must seach for the planks, vines, stone slabs, pine needles, leaves etc. But that is actually a lot of fun. And once you begin to creat the recipes it truly is a joy to make and even more to eat. I hope that those who adventure into buying Sticks and Stones truly enjoy the recipes. Let me know what you think. Chef Ted Reader
