    Book Description

Drawing extensively from various disciplines including ethnology, geography, geology, and environmental studies, this groundbreaking book addresses shifting concepts of time, history, and landscape in relation to the work of pioneering American artists during the first half of the 20th century. Paintings, watercolors, and photographs by renowned artists such as Frederic Remington, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Thomas Hart Benton, Dorothea Lange, and Jackson Pollock are considered alongside American Indian ledger drawings, tempuras, and Dineh sandpaintings. Taken together, these works document the quest to create a specifically American art in the decades prior to World War II.

The Modern West begins with a captivating meditation on the relationship between human culture and the physical landscape by Barry Lopez, who traveled the West in the artists’ footsteps. Emily Ballew Neff then describes the evolving importance of the West for American artists working out a radically new aesthetic response to space and place, from artist-explorers on the turn-of-the-century frontier, to visionaries of a Californian arcadia, to desert luminaries who found in its stark topography a natural equivalent to abstraction.

Beautifully illustrated and handsomely designed, this book is essential to anyone interested in the West and the history of modernism in American art.

      Book Description

After finishing school in New York, Rabbi Harvey traveled west in search of adventure and, hopefully, work as a rabbi. His journey took him to Elk Spring, Colorado, a small town in the Rocky Mountains. When he managed to outwit the ruthless gang that had been ruling Elk Spring, the people invited Harvey to stay on as the town's rabbi. In Harvey's adventures in Elk Spring, he settles disputes, tricks criminals into confessing, and offers unsolicited bits of Talmudic insight and Hasidic wisdom. Each story presents Harvey with a unique challenge--from convincing a child that he is not actually a chicken, to retrieving stolen money from a sweet-faced bubbe gone bad. Like any good collection of Jewish folktales, these stories contain layers of humor and timeless wisdom that will entertain, teach and, especially, make you laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous, Fun and Even a Little Educational.......2007-08-18

I loved, loved, loved this "graphic novel" (not so much a novel but a collection of stories). The Adventures of Rabbi Harvey is a collection of Jewish folktales told as Western adventures featuring Rabbi Harvey of Elk Spring Colorado. Rabbi Harvey's stories involve his own travels and encounters with double-crossers and odd types like the boy who insists he is a chicken, as well as moral dilemmas brought to him for his rabbinical ruling. Since I'd read/heard some of the stories previously, I am assuming that many of them are based on traditional Jewish folktales but some seem to be original stories. It's a nice mix and all are deftly and humorously illustrated, with funny asides from the rabbi, onlookers, even the occasional animal or inanimate object (when a traveling merchant attempts to cheat a woman out of a bag of money he is supposed to deliver, throwing only one coin on the table, the head on the coin wonders, "Why am I not surprised?"

There is a distinct Jewish flavor to the tales, set in a neverland of all-Jewish Western towns, and I definitely recommend this book for older kids and adults alike who want a fun and easily digested book of Jewish stories. But even for non-Jews, this is an entertaining book of stories with moral points of view, told with a sense of humor. HIghly recommended, this one is a keeper for me and I sincerely hope there are more Rabbi Harvey books to come.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for people of all religions.......2007-07-08

I loved reading this book. It was funny, engaging, and worth owning. The cover caught my eye, and I love how the novel is drawn. Very cute!

4 out of 5 stars Rabbi Harvey, the Western Chacham.......2007-01-04

The stories here serve up some of the best short (and very short) "wisdom stories" of the Yiddish tradition, presented in the unfamiliar environs of the Old West of the USA. Arguments are settled, bullies get their comeuppance, and the good guys (the ones with the black yarmulkes) win. A great intro to Jewish short stories and novels, and much of it is very funny (even if you can see the punchline coming from 200 cubits.) Get your kids (and the kid in you) interested in Jewish Literature in a painless fashion.

      5 out of 5 stars A hilarious read!.......2006-11-17

This book is really great. It is perfect for kids and adults, and you don't need to know anything about religion to enjoy it. When I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down until I was finished. The stories are simple, straightforward, and funny. I especially love the drawings. Many of the hidden details in the pictures made me laugh out loud.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages (and belief systems).......2006-11-09

A collection of deliciously odd, stylized drawings, dry wit and perfectly paced mini-morality tales that I thoroughly enjoyed. Rabbi Harvey starts out an undistinguished neophyte and ends up taming the West with wisecracks and Talmudic wisdom, even as he's forced to think on his feet to cheat death. I'm not Jewish, but I loved this book and can't wait until my daughter is old enough to meet Rabbi Harvey.

For Non-Western Art, Humanities, or Culture and Religion courses.

This one-volume survey provides students with detailed and systematic coverage of Non-Western art via coverage of the cultural and ideological contexts in which art was created.

Michael Kampen-O’Riley created this text to serve as the market’s first dedicated survey of Non-Western art. Rather than mere descriptions of the various styles, Kampen-O’Riley provides detailed analysis of each major style within its cultural context, through which students can derive the meaning of works of art in each style. The text also provides students with an efficient educational tool with which to study art from nearly two thirds of the world.

        Book Description

This landmark study delves into the traditional arts and crafts fo the wild American West and their lasting effects on contemporary design.

Visually breathtaking, Fine Art of the West brings together the most artistically significant objects created by master craftsmen from the mid-nineteenth century to today. B. Byron Price, a leading expert of Western American art, explores the fascinating origins of these objects in the Old West, as the legacy of Spanish-American craftsmen and the workaday equipment of cowboys. The story continues as he traces their influence upon innovative designers employing them as a basis for a new, vigorous tradition in decorative art.

Working saddles and their offspring: the trophy, parade, and presentation saddles are discussed in depth and appear in stunning full-page reproductions, complemented by a definitive selection of chaps, cuffs, gauntlets, and gun leather. Price also focuses on quirts and other objects that illustrate artistry with hide and hair, as well as fine metalwork, including buckles, bits, spurs, and jewelry. Hats and boots, workaday and fancy, conclude the survey. Contemporary craftsmen who carry on these traditions today are represented alongside illustrations of their work. A glossary and bibliography complete this first comprehensive look at one of America's most fascinating forms of artistic expression.

4 out of 5 stars COWBOYS WERE A "SHOWY LOT".......2004-12-03

Those who may not think fine art and the West are compatible are in for quite a surprise when they open "Fine Art of the West" by the Director of the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West, B. Byron Price.

Some 270 illustrations attest to the beauty of the work created by craftsman, often basing their designs upon those of Spanish and Mexican artisans. Many of the items included in this volume were, of course, utilitarian, such as saddles, boots, spurs, chaps. Yet they are distinctive in artistry and design, as cowboys used these them to decorate themselves and their horses.

We find quoted Owen Wister's description of a cowpuncher: "...he wore his careful finery, and from his wide hat-brim to his jingling heels made something of a figure - as self-conscious and deliberate a show as any painted buck in council or bull-elk among his aspiring cows; and out of town in the mountains, as wild and lean and dangerous as buck or bull knows how to be." They were, indeed, a showy lot and festooned themselves accordingly.

        Chapter headings include:
        1. Stock Saddles and Gun Leather
        2. Trophy, Parade, and Presentation Saddles
        3. Artistry With Hide and Hair
        5. Boots and Hats

In the third chapter we discover leather gloves with gauntlets and red stars sewn to the cuffs, as well as short leather gauntlets with beaded cuffs, hands, and fingers. The epitome of chaps were those covered with hair, often dyed to colorful hues.

Those who consider men and women of the old West to have been rather nondescript will have to reverse their opinion as readers find bridles fashioned of dyed horsehair, as colorful as a wide sky rainbow.

Historians, scholars, and those with an interest in our country's Western history will find much to enjoy in "Fine Art of the West."

          Book Description

Picturing the City takes an innovative look at the group of urban realists known as the Ashcan School, and at the booming cultures of vision and representation in early twentieth-century New York. Offering fresh insights into the development of modern cities and modern art in America, Rebecca Zurier considers what it meant to live in a city where strangers habitually watched each other and public life seemed to consist of continual display, as new classes of immigrants and working women claimed their places in the metropolis. Through her study of six artists--George Bellows, William Glackens, Robert Henri, George Luks, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan--Zurier illuminates the quest for new forms of realism to describe changes in urban life, commercial culture, and codes of social conduct in the early 1900s.
Synthesizing visual and literary analysis with urban cultural history, Picturing the City focuses new attention on the materiality and design process of pictures. The author scrutinizes all manner of visual activity, from the pandemonium of comics to the mise-en-scene of early movies, from the mark of an individual pen stroke to a glance on the street, from illustrators' manuals to ambitious paintings that became icons of American art. By situating the Ashcan School within its proper visual culture, Zurier opens up the question of what the artists' "realism" meant at a time when many other forms of representation, including journalism and cinema, were competing to define "real life" in New York City.

Abbeville Kids expands its award-winning series of interactive, inquiry-based books designed to teach children about the world by looking at art, and about art by looking at the world.

Each volume in this innovative best-selling series, with over 200,000 in print, is devoted to a subject that every child already knows from personal experience. In How Artists See America, sixteen works of art show the many different ways a selection of great artists--from Winslow Homer and Childe Hassam to Georgia O'Keeffe and Romare Bearden--have perceived the breathtaking variety of landscapes and the diversity of people living in the four major regions of the United States. Author Colleen Carroll's engaging, conversational text is filled with thought-provoking questions and imaginative activities that spark children's natural curiosity both about the subject of the artwork and about the way it was created.

This direct, interactive approach to art--and to the world--promotes self-exploration, self-discovery, and self-expression. As it introduces artistic concepts, styles, and techniques, it also provides loads of fun. For children who want to know more about the artists whose works appear in the book, biographies are provided at the end, along with suggestions for further reading and an international list of museums where each artist's works can be seen. As they begin to understand the multitude of ways that artists see, children naturally deepen their appreciation of art, the world around them, and most important, their own unique vision.

                  Book Description

Out There addresses the theme of cultural marginalization - the process whereby various groups are excluded from access to and participation in the dominant culture. It engages fundamental issues raised by attempts to define such concepts as mainstream, minority, and "other," and opens up new ways of thinking about culture and representation. All of the texts deal with questions of representation in the broadest sense, encompassing not just the visual but also the social and psychological aspects of cultural identity.

Included are important theoretical writings by Homi Bhabha, Helene Cixous, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, and Monique Wittig. Their work is juxtaposed with essays on more overtly personal themes, often autobiographical, by Gloria Anzaldua, Bell Hooks, and Richard Rodriguez, among others.

This rich anthology brings together voices from many different marginalized groups - groups that are often isolated from each other as well as from the dominant culture. It joins issues of gender, race, sexual preference, and class in one forum but without imposing a false unity on the diverse cultures represented. Each piece in the book subtly changes the way every other piece is read.

While several essays focus on specific issues in art, such as John Yau's piece on Wilfredo Lam in the Museum of Modern Art, or James Clifford's on collecting art, others draw from debates in literature, film, and critical theory to provide a much broader context than is usually found in work aimed at an art audience. Topics range from the functions of language to the role of public art in the city, from gay pornography to the meanings of black hair styles.

Out There also includes essays by Rosalyn Deutsche, Richard Dyer, Kobena Mercer, Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, Gerald Vizenor and Simon Watney, as well as by the editors.
