Awesome!!!!.......2007-04-06
What a great book! I actually had it before and lost it in a divorce. I really missed this book.
Check the table of contents first!.......2006-10-19
I LOVE this book simply because I've been trying to recreate popeye's fried chicken on my own and failed miserably! I checked the table of contents and found it was there and that alone was worth the $9 investment. I'm not going to make everything but its fun to see how you could make Mary Jane's. :D
Check the table of contents first, then if there's a recipe you would like, take a chance. Most times, its pretty good!
Oh and the chicken recipe? Its not exactly right but it's pretty darn close and makes really good spicy fried chicken!
Thrallz.......2006-03-13
This is a very cool cook book, lots of fun recipes to try and of favorites. My husband and I had fun just flipping through it when it first arrived planning what we could fix.
The Olive Garden Alfredo is yummy and so close to the original chain version.
Are Charles Holcomb and Melissa actually Douglas Hensley (and Pattie Hensley's husband)?.......2006-01-07
A reviewer, "Charles Holcomb", has reviewed all the books written by Douglas Hensley and Pattie Hensley. Reviewer "Melissa" is also now curiously reviewing the same list as "Charles Holcomb". He has also reviewed several competing books -- such as this one -- and used those reviews as an opportunity to mention the "superior quality" of the book written by Douglas Hensley or Pattie Hensley. The Hensley titles are as follows:
- "Lost Stories From Hell" by Douglas Hensley
- "Magic Voodoo Spells" by Douglas Hensley
- "Hell's Gate: Terror at Bobby Mackey's Music World" by Douglas Hensley
- "Automobile Sales Training and Tips From The Pros" by Douglas Hensley
- "Book of Dreams & Dream Interpretations" by Douglas Hensley
- "Bloody Bones" by Douglas Hensley
- "Grandma's Cook Book and Recipes" by Pattie Hensley
- "Grandma's Country Recipes" by Pattie Hensley
- "Copycat Restaurant and Bakery Recipes" by Pattie Hensley
My Wife says pass on this one.......2006-01-01
JUST OK. My wife says to look under COPYCAT RESTAURANT RECIPES or COPYCAT RESTAURANT COOK BOOKS here on Amazon to find a better selection.

Little one loves this book.......2007-07-15
I am not a huge fan of this book, but my daughter LOVES it, so I am giving it 5 stars. She refused to try a sticky bun tonight because 'it's junk food', so I appreciate that (we mostly eat healthy around here). I just hope that she never points at anyone out in public and says something like "they eat way too much junk food".
A classic, even if you like junk food.......2007-01-24
I buy this book for all the little people in my life, after growing up loving it myself. It's a Berenstain Bears book, so it needs little introduction on its moral qualities and instruction. But it's a good book that offers a balanced look on... eating balanced.
But I especially enjoy the illustrations of the junk food. They're up there with Hooper Humperdinck - Not Him!
better teachers than i am..........2007-01-19
l bought these books to give to my little nephew for christmas. we are now well grown out of berenstein bears' books, but my children and i remember them well! the kids loved them because, among other things, they were a longish and satisfying read with mom or dad, not a quickie, but a book with a real story, particularly effective for delaying bedtime with a long book. all the books teach and some of the lessons still echo down the years. 'messy build-up' has kept the kids' rooms fairly tidy for years. manners? well, manners pave the way in life like few other things and are so critically important. junk food? there's an important message to teach about junk food and we needed all the help we could get with reinforcing it. we have a foot high stack of the berenstein books upstairs, carefully tucked away for the next generation. it is such a pleasure to buy them and give them as truly valuable gifts.
Good Book .......2006-11-15
This is a good book. It teaches that eating junk food just makes a person chubby and isn't providing any nutrients the body needs. However, when Mamma Bear hides the food in the freezer, that isn't a good idea especially since she tells them. A kid could just go there and grab the treats. Further, denying kids treats totally is not a good idea either. Better is to let them have one treat a day or every other day then to totally not let them have any at all. Then when they do get treats like on Halloween, Christmas, and Easter, they will binge on them. Also the part about the bears all running all the way home is too farfetched. The home is far away and if they have not been exercising as they should have been then that jog is too much to take at that time for them. They should work their way up first so they don't get sore muscles.
Great teaching book for all libraries!.......2005-12-29
This is a cute book even without a message attached to it and it makes my little one laugh every time we read it. Dealing with eating too much candy and junk food is the subject and it starts with mama seeing that her cubs were eating all the time and getting quite chubby. So, after running into the family doctor at the grocery store, the bear family gets to see a slide show on the body and how it works. Plus, they learn the importance of eating good food and not the junk. The best part is something that all of us have difficulty doing. Mama bear throws out all the junk food in the house (actually, she puts it in the freezer) and provides only healthy snacks like carrot sticks, nuts and raisins. We've even tried this and believe me, it works. There's now a preference over candy for nuts and raisins (especially the yogurt ones!) and candy, well, it's just not that prevalent anymore. I highly recommend this one - it will stick with your children for life.

Candy: A Novel of Love and Addiction
ASIN: 0374270244 |
Amazon.com
The early '80s in the lower east side of New York was a thrilling time for the popular music and art culture created at the end of the punk and New Wave eras. It was also a devastating time of drug addiction and the beginning of AIDS awareness. In her stunning first novel, Linda Yablonsky, a survivor of that dangerous time, tells the story of a would-be writer turned heroin junkie who deals to queers, artists, punks, and yuppies. This is an exquisitely written, brutal, caring book.

best drug use book i've ever read..........2006-03-01
i picked this book up at a thrift store after passing it over several times. i saw the rating it had on here (amazon.com) so i decided it would be worth a shot. i was right!
this book is fiction, but its really believable as a true story. i had previously read a million little peices by james frey and was terribly disappointed. linda yablonsky's the story of junk was more believable as a memoir than james frey's book. and his was supposed to be one. i enjoyed just about every moment of this book.
i highly recommend this book to everyone... if you can find a place that has it.
The story of junk.......2004-06-02
If you've ever wanted an honest account of the drug underworld, this is it. Drug trafficing, selling, and using in New York City in the early 80's as seen through sarcastic eyes; I felt I was transporte and couldn't put it down. Real people, real lives, it will shock you to see bits of yourself in each character. The human conncetion is always there, making one question the public disgust for addicts and truly begin to see them as no different as ourselves.
Raw Real Life Devoured in Two Days.......2003-11-09
I wasn't expecting to be impressed by the so-already-told story of a junky in the 80's, thus it struck me fully by surprise when I found myself so immersed into Yablonsky's words that life around me seemed to pause during the mere two days it took me to finish it. She succeds at getting the reader in the skin of every one of her characters.
Promising First Novel and a Good Read--Not All The Way There.......2002-10-05
In this promising first novel, Linda Yablonsky paints a humorous, off-beat picture of New York's elite drug culture in the 1980s. The narrator/protagonist is adrift in a world in which who you hang out with matters more than how much money you make. A would-be writer, she's an aimless thirty year old druggie who works as cook in a chic downtown restaurant. Her natural hipness makes her a favorite of the "in" crowd and gradually she's drawn to the glamour of an aristocracy which, as a middle class Jewish girl from the burbs, doesn't reflect what is familiar to her. Adopting the vices of the elite, she finds a role she can cop--drug dealer to artists, models and entrepreneurs. Spurred on by her reckless girlfriend, a marvelous rockster named "Kit" whose helpless charm and deviant life style are brought vividly to life by Yablonsky, she is soon buying and selling heroin for them. An endless stream of people herd in and out of their apartment, and she observes everything that goes down with the deadpan humor of a cynic and the naive detachment of someone who has nothing to lose. Her anxiety increases as she places herself further and further at risk, betraying the tough veneer she presents to the world. Surprisingly, when she gets busted her life calms down--the crisis enables her to acknowlege a number of issues she's been avoiding since her arrival in New York: her total lack of identity and her desire to become a writer. At this juncture, Yablonsky attempts to take on bigger issues to do with drug addiction and destructive behavior and,in my opinion, she takes a wrong turn. She struggles to link the character's pathology with the history of the Holocaust and her heritage as a descendant of survivors, for example. It doesn't come across and a strict editor would have told Yablonsky not to go there.
At the end of the story, she is stunned and confused, but has managed to change the imprisoning architecture of her life--no small feat for a human being, and a huge task for a novel to make both authentic and interesting. It's enough in a first novel (and an autobiographical work) to describe the transformation the character goes through and acknowledge the issues raised as a result of the character's experience. Neither Yablonsky nor her narrator need to know all the answers, but one of them should ask the right questions--and then leave it at that. Since the book is based on personal experience, it's possible Yablonsky rushed it to completion--who can afford to wait a decade or two to digest life's experience?
The author's eye for detail and ironic sense of pathos make for a tale which is both exotic and urbane. Despite her immersion in a chaotic, intense world, there's a soundness to the narrator's voice which inspires trust in the reader. As an outsider, she's adopted a New Yorker's consistently sarcastic, humorous attitude but, in contrast, has an underlying helplessness and sincerity which suggests she is more of a human being than she likes to admit. I liked her character a lot and look forward to more novels by Yablonsky in the future--a second is long overdue!
Down the Junk Road And Back.......1999-09-02
This book chronicles the "life cycle" of the junkie, in which one goes from the "heroin honeymoon" period, to the ultimate devastation. It rates right up there among my favorite junkie novels, after Permanent Midnight, and Trainspotting. I'm an ex-heroin addict, and while I never was a dealer, made deals with the DEA, or suggled drugs in from the Golden Triangle, as the protagonist in this book does, Yablonsky's narrative rings very true.

Book Description
A wry and dark debut of sharply compressed lyrics by a precocious new voice in poetry.
These powerful poems are like wrecked pastorals whose narrator seeks temporary pleasure in wit, form, rhyme, or the borrowed weekend house. Inching toward consolation in the face of sudden loss, the poet examines the reconfigured world. The elegies are like conversations overheard or recounted dreams: full of portent and mystery.
Customer Reviews:
Elegiac, Mesmerizing.......2006-05-04
These poems are spare and crafted and wrought of gorgeous images. The New York Times was right to hail Goodyear as a major new poet - and teachers of poetry would be wise to include this volume in their syllabi. The poetry is not conventionally "accessable", but it covers subjects - eros, grief, and terror - that will capture the imagination of many emerging poets. As a former English teacher, Honey and Junk would have been one of the volumes I turned to regularly. It is a tour de force.
overhyped, over wrought, too painful to finish.......2005-12-12
dont believe the hype--several of these poems display a marvelous avoidance of SOUND and SENSIBILITY. rather, they read like little rants. She does have some funny lines but overall, she could have benfitted from a good editor. Clearly she is in way over her head with a project like this. And it shows.
Sign language for the soul.......2005-03-30
Goodyear writes with a sting, bold, fearless, jabbing under the flesh, blood drawn as a reminder that this is real life and it hurts.
"Mother was never in the same room with any of us.
I think she was a hostess, in which case I should say,
Thank you for having me." (County Line Road)
Like great art, subject to interpretation, these concise poems speak the language of the beholder. Certain phrases jump out, ringing familiar in the subconscious. Such a gift is hardly precocious, although the author is young; rather, Goodyear deftly manages the clumsy, inexplicable emotions that come to life in unexpected formations, the senseless rendered sensible, pricking the surface to disclose the bubbling stew that inhabits the mind. Stubborn, the mind refuses to yield until the poet's words demand an audience. Raise the lid of this Pandora's Box and see what baleful surprises await.
"Is this more like a tripwire
or a fuse,
If I handle it right
may I keep you?" (Message)
There is nothing as satisfying as the well-written poem, the rush of comprehension that this poet delivers page after page. Goodyear's remarkable collection demands respect, as though for one quick moment everything is clear, the universe exposed, shocking, painful and tender. Language is magical in the right hands, both lyrical and haunting. Goodyear lets her genie out of the bottle, intentionally, as willful as a wild child, as precise as a surgeon:
"life after death fingernails unfolding
in the last mute wave of growing old." (Old Saybrook)
Change is unavoidable, as is pain, these poems filled with a sensual awareness of place, shifting memories, deep and inevitable loss, life on life's terms. If you love words, trust the sleight-of-hand of this poet, youthful yet ageless, painful yet precious as a last breath.
"It doesn't take a genius to say
Get out while you can.
It takes an optimist." (Safe House III)
Luan Gaines/2005.

The Author.......2005-02-26
Many years ago I seen Mr. Power's speak. I am not much into speakers, but this man grabs your attention. I got his book which he personilized to me, read it and it has become one of my favorites. I grew up in Chicago so could relate to alot of it, it is the one book that I suggest to everyone. If you get the chance to read, or hear him speak you will remember it.
The Junk-Drawers Corner-Store Front-Porch Blues.......2000-08-04
I first discovered John R. Powers when a co-worker gave me the Unoriginal Sinner and the Ice God to read. It was so good I wanted to own that book and other books by Mr. Power. I was diappointed to find that all of his books are out of print. My local library had three of his tiles but have found it difficult to locate his works to purchase. I recommed all of John R. Powers books espesially to baby boomers his books will bring back wonderful memories. I would like to know more about the author.
A New Urbanist novel.......2000-02-19
Architechts and Urban Design folks who consider themselves New Urbanists will love this novel. Powers understands that our missing of the "old neighborhood" is about the sense of place and belonging that was left behind in the search for the suburban dream. Powers tells all the stories: the one mom on the block who worked, the garage which is behind the house, off the alley "where it belongs". Powers lets us recall the calm and orderliness of life in a neighborhood of diverse population, mixed uses(corner stores and front porches) and care for neighbors. The book is a delightful reminder of the days and places that defined middle class not in terms of income or profession but of an ethic shared with the families next door and across the alley.
A Great Book.......2000-01-27
I think this book is an excellent book and I just love everything that John R. Powers writes. He has a way of being funny and poignant at the same time. He writes about growing up in Chicago as if you are actually doing it yourself. His way of writing draws you in because it is very funny and touching and really makes you think about life. The fact of the matter is that I loaned this book to a friend and now I can't find it in print again. It is truly a good book!
It's a real shame that this is out of print.......1999-10-08
I loved the other John R. Powers books and discovered this one, believe it or not, in an airport gift shop. As with his other books, it was a joy to read and had an emotional depth so rarely found in books that are also miraculously funny. Powers may well be the most underrated writer to emerge in the last 30 years. His books are so entertaining, you don't notice yourself being moved. Until later, that is. Like, ten seconds later. Wonderful writing I recommend to anyone with a heart and a funny bone.

Twinkies(R), Krispy Kreme(R), Cap'n Crunch(R) Domino's(R) Jelly Bellies(R) M & M's(R) Tab(R) and Dubble-Bubble(R).
The Junk Food Companion is Eric Spitznagel's comprehensive handbook of America's weirdest invention: junk food. Drawing from a selection of his own gooey favorites, Spitznagel investigates all aspects of junk food--from the emotional value of chocolate and the nutritional value of jelly beans to the sex appeal of chewing gum and the travesty that was New Coke. Here, you'll find the cereal mascot's Hall of Fame (from Tony the Tiger to Snap, Crackle, and Pop), an inspired explication of the junk food inspired "Ode to Cookie" by the classic junk food junkie, Cookie Monster, and many other factoids about everything that falls outside the four food groups.
The Junk Food Companion includes celebrity quotes to reassure junk food junkies that they are not alone--Dr. Ruth on gum, Robert Redford on Oreos, and Michael Jordan on the Big Mac. Full of reader-friendly games, charts, and quizzes, The Junk Food Companion is truly a celebration of eating badly.

Hysterical.......2001-07-25
I have read chapters of this book outloud to friends over and over and over. It's drop dead, laugh out loud funny. With lines like "Contrary to popular opinion, the Fruite Brute was not Gay" and chapters analyzing the evolution of Cookie Monster's decades of Odes to Chococate Chip obsession, how can you go wrong?
Funny, Funny, Funny-Perfect for traveling or the beach.......2000-06-09
This book is an indepth look at junk food and its culture. It brings up philosophy dispensed by The Cookie Monster. Everything you ever wanted to know about gum, chocolate, cookies, candy and cereal. Celebrity quotes on their favorite junk foods. It is interesting as well as one of the funniest books I've ever read. It is perfect for the beach or commuting on public transportation. This is a book that will be passed from person to person and re-read many times. I can't recommend it more highly. It's perfect for what it is aiming to be. An amusing exploration of our nations real favorite past time.
