Book Description
As director of the Jerhattan Parapsychic Center, telepath Rhyssa Owen coordinated the job assignments for psychically gifted Talents. And though she had her hands full dealing with the unreasonable demand for kinetics to work on the space platform that would be humankind's stepping-stone to the stars, she was always ready to welcome new Talents to the Center.
Feisty and streetwise, twelve-year-old Tirla used her extraordinary knack for languages to eke out a living in the Linear developments, where the poor struggled to make ends meet and children were conscripted or sold into menial work programs. Young Peter, paralyzed in a freak accident, hoped someday to get into space where zero gravity would enable him to function more easily. Both desperately needed help only other Talents could provide.
With the appearance in her life of one extraordinary man with no measurable Talent at all, Rhyssa suddenly found herself questioning everything she thought she knew about her people. And when two Talented children were discovered to have some very unusual -- and unexpected -- abilities, she realized that she would have to reassess the potential of all Talentkind...
Download Description
Earth has reached its darkest moment. In subterranean warrens, the poor eke out precarious lives where jobs are scarce and children are sold for labor -- while on the surface, a privileged few enjoy lives of luxury. As the population surges and unrest spreads, a disaster of epic proportions seems inescapable. The only hope: a platform under construction in space from which starships will be launched to colonize distant planets. But the project is critically behind schedule.
In the midst of the chaos, Rhyssa Owen and her fellow Talents -- telepaths who read minds, kinetics who manipulate matter, and precogs to whom the future is an open book -- struggle to survive. Then two children are discovered whose extraordinary psychic gifts have the potential to avert the looming catastrophe -- or hasten its ominous arrival.

stuff duh.......2007-01-22
For those who have read To Ride Pegasus and the Talent series, Pegasus in Flight holds quite a few familiar surprises.
One curious oddity is the titling of the two Pegasus books. Oddly enough, Pegasus In Flight was published before To Ride Pegasus. Even more interesting are the characters. It is recommended that you don't read the two books in order of publishing-instead, start on To Ride Pegasus and then move on to this also fine novel.
The most interesting features of this novel are the appearances of familiar characters from other Talent Series books or their descendants or ancestors. We see Sascha Roznine, undoubtedly a relative of Vascha Roznine in TRP; we see Dorotea Horvarth and her son Miklos; Rhyssa Owen is undoubtedly the daughter of Daffy op Owen; and perhaps most heartening of all, we see the first Peter Reidinger. Later, in the Talent books, his descendant would become one of the best and most explosive personalities. This all is very good, as it binds the novel to others in the series.
Pegasus in Flight takes place one generation after To Ride Pegasus and centuries before the Rowan books. A call for Talents to work on the world-wide project of Padrugoi, which would be the stepping stone of mankind to the heavens, is led by the brutal Russian engineer Ludmilla Ivanova Barchenka, who will stop at nothing to strip Earth of its Talents. In the midst of this gigantic, frenetic circus of a project lies foul play-Rhyssa, her future love interest, and others uncover terrifying statistics of some "accidents" that have been occuring on Padrugoi.
In the meantime, Tirla is a scruffy girl living in the dark Linears of Jerhattan. Here she ekes out a living by helping alleyway mothers elude the illegal-peoples check as well as doing various other deeds. Her knack for languages makes her an important person in the Linear G-unknownst to her, this "knack" is actually a very strong Talent. In the meantime, Tirla struggles to elude the perverted Yassim, who deals in unsavory uses of children stolen from the Linea this book grs or sold by their parents.
Young Peter Reidinger was an ordinary boy until he was suddenly paralyzed. This paralysis forced his mind to transfer motor functions to another part of the brain-and gave him a powerful Talent.
Rhyssa, Sascha, Dave Lehardt and the other Talented strive to save the kidnapped Tirla and Peter whilst evading Ludmilla Barchenka's persistent assaults for kinetic Talents. And as they do, they meet danger, love, and dark plots and conspiracies head on.
Pegasus in Flight is rather disappointing when compared to its beautifully written followers. The plot was wonderfully done, only very often Anne would convolute or add some sort of detailing, or just something that would make it a little more "muddled". There are several very dry points, as in To Ride Pegasus, but there are some really wonderful scenes and pages and chapters that warrant reading over and over again.
Mostly Pegasus in Flight is a rather fine novel, but given a choice over this or the, say Rowan or Damia, the other Talent would win. Series fans must read-as for others, it is a very good stepping stone into the Talent world, giving the reader a full immersion into this far-future series, but the Rowan serves the purpose just as well. Try it-you just might like it.
Wonderful Psychic Fantasy.......2006-02-11
This it a fantastic light sci-fi, dealing with the doings of Talents, psychically gifted people in not-so-distant future, when space travel is just begining to be explored. Even though I love this book, I wouldn't recommend the two "prequels" Wings of Pegasus and To Ride Pegasus. They don't involve the same characters, and Pegasus in Flight stands on its own. The sequel, Pegasus in Space, is also excellent, and is actually a continuation of this book. This is an excellent book for teens, and very similar to the X-men movies.
Getting better, an improvement on the last book.......2004-12-22
The writing here is tighter, and the plot is better. I liked the part about Tirla the best. I hope she has the best of luck!
The second part I liked was about Dortea playing the grandmother role. The funniest part was where she telepathically fusses at Sascha over the bill that Tirla has acquired over new clothing for herself. *grins*
Thumbs up for Daffyd. Who is better suited, ethically speaking, to the role as director for the parapsychic institute.
Not quite as good as the others, but better than TRP.
Book 2 in the Pegasus series.......2004-05-17
Anne McCaffrey is the greatest. This book continues the story of psychically Talented individuals in the near future. The characters are getting filled out more in this book. You have to read this one second. Don't try to read it before To Ride Pegasus. Actually they could have easily been combined into one book. They are available as a double set and that is how I bought my copies. This series is a wonderful look at "what if" in our own society. A great read!!! Definitly follow up on the story by reading Pegasus in Space.
Better than the first Pegasus.......2001-08-16
With the end of the second book I was disappointed that it had ended. At fisrt I was not overly thrilled that the main characters from "To Ride Pegasus" were used, but by the middle I was truly enjoying these new characters. I was overly joyed when Doreta returned but as an older woman giving some link between the first two novels. When I picked up the third novel I was pleased that the characters from this book continue on. I still wonder at the limit of Peter's Talent, and besides her natural Talent for languages Tirla has some other Talents that are still hidden. The topic of child theft and their use as a labour force on farms, in mines, and as prostitutes is somthing most of use may not think about but occurs all time in all countries, in one form or another. Yet the story also shows us that children can have the greatest impact on use personally and on society if they are given a chance to succeed. With hints from other reviewers that there is a link between this an the Rowan series I may have to start that one soon.

In his best-selling book, THE GLIDING FLIGHT, award-winning paper airplane designer John M. Collins introduced us to the craft of paper airplane folding. In THE GLIDING FLIGHT 2, the much-anticipated sequel, Collins reveals the next generation of fold-and-fly fun. He explains how to craft 25 new and amazing flying machineslike the Looper, the BAT plane, and the Manta Rayusing just single sheets of paper.
Featuring a wide range of paper airplanes, from simple designs suitable for young children to more complex planes that, believe it or not, you can keep aloft indefinitely, THE GLIDING FLIGHT II presents clear, step-by-step folding instructions for an activity the whole family can enjoy.

My favorite out of the eight Cheysuli books.......1999-12-15
Jennifer Roberson has written a fantastic, sweeping series that spans generations. It is so much more than cliche sword and sorcery fantasy. It's about moral struggles, genocide, and prejudice. This installment is my favorite of the series because the main character, Aidan, is such an interesting person with an unusual lir (animal familiar). His inner struggle to find his place in the destiny of his people is so important that he is gently prodded along by several of the Cheysuli deities. The history of what has happened in the series so far is revisited in Aidan's encounters with the spirits of his long-dead royal kin.
One thing - don't even bother trying to read this book unless you have read the first six. Briefly: Book One, Shapechangers, is an enchanting introduction to the world of the Cheysuli; Book Two, The Song of Homana, was kind of slow and hard to get through for me, but thank goodness I did because the rest of the series is so fantastic; Book Three, The Legacy of the Sword, covers the struggle of Donal, the first Cheysuli Mujhar, to be accepted by the people he must rule; Book Four, Track of the White Wolf (which is my second favorite of the series), is about Niall, who hovers between the world of the Cheysuli and the Homanans without really being a true part of either one; Book Five, A Pride of Princes, is about the terrible experiences at the hands of the malevolent Ihlini that cause Niall's three sons to come of age; Book Six, Daughter of the Lion, switches gears and focuses on Keely, Niall's daughter, and her fight to accept the womanhood she's tried to ignore; Book Eight, A Tapestry of Lions, is the magnificent conclusion of the series with the fulfillment of the prophecy coming in an unexpected fashion and one of the best endings I've ever read in a fantasy series.
good book........1999-12-07
I read the Cheysuli Chronicles as an adolescent but find myself picking them up time and time again to reread them and delve back into the depths of this portion of Cheysuli History in Homana.
Flight of the Raven has been a long-standing favorite of mine. Aidan is an excellently developed character--he is probably my favorite out of all the Cheysuli royalty. Ms. Roberson once again manages to portray Aidan and the rest of the characters in a manner that forces you to empathize with them and share in their internal struggles, fears, hopes, and dreams. This novel stands apart from the rest of the Cheysuli Chronicles as it delves more closely into the mysteries of the Gods and is generally more spiritual. As with the rest of the Chronicles this novel pitts Cheysuli against Ihlini, but the struggle in this novel has the highest stakes I've seen yet and is definitely the most heart-wrenching. I recommend it to those who have read the rest of the series.
Extremely creative and well written........1999-10-23
I have read the whole series and highly recommend all of them. Ms. Roberson is creative and thought provoking. She accomplishes both with a beautiful writing style that evokes very real images of her characters, their personal triumphs and tragedies and that of the Cheysuli race. There is tragedy and triumph in abundance here from a fertile and well thought author and while eight books may seem like many, it won't after you have read the first one! Read and enjoy!
if you havent read it you are really missing out........1997-10-23
you really cant just read one you gotta read the whole set they are really great Jennifer Roberson really knows how to write a story. Donna Sanchez,Los Alamos, New Mexico

Vengeance..........2007-07-06
Love, magic and blood is what this tale is about. Ki is an outcast, partly because of what happened to her family and partly by her own actions. Now she must decide, where is she going, what will she become? But what goes around comes around and, after getting her revenge, it looks like she may end up running for her life. The problem is, who is she running from and who can she trust?
I was first exposed to the skill of Megan Lindholm when I read a short fantasy story starring Ki and Vandien while in college, in the early 90s. I was very impressed by the friendship between the male character and female character. They were partners in arms but not lovers. It seemed fresh, interesting and didn't in any way take away from the story.
So a few weeks ago, looking for some good fantasy to read I searched for a novel with the same characters. And I was not disappointed as you can plainly see.
Beautiful Scenes.......2007-05-28
The plot was limited, and the conclusion obtuse, but the beautiful scenes were a pleasure to read. I've read some of Robin Hobb's other works, which are also wonderful, and I can see her apprenticeship in this novel.
Don't Pass This Up.......2003-08-14
Let me just say I LOVE this book. I received it when I was 12 and here at 22 I still enjoy it. Young adults and adults alike will not be able to put this book down. I wouldn't recommend it for a preteen just because some parts are hard to understand and it can get kind of grizzly.
Vivid and Intensely Involving Fantasy.......2000-10-06
I first read this book (and the other books of the Windsinger series) about 15 years ago. I know I enjoyed it then. I have enjoyed many fantasy novels over the years, and occasionally I have enjoyed rereading them. But I have never felt compelled, after so many years, to seek out a book which was out of print. When I finally got a hold of Harpy's Flight, I found I remembered the central characters vividly, but the plot seemed new and fresh. Ki has lost her family in a brutal attack by harpies, sentient flying creatures. Her first thought is vengeance, and then survival. Along the way, she meets a down and out adventurer, Vandien, when he makes an unsuccessful attempt to rob her. The central characters, Ki and Vandien, are tough, strong, and very human. Their relationship, as they confront dangers, grows in a measured, realistic way. They do not solve each other's problems, but they do help each other survive. As I continued reading, I found some insight as to why I felt so drawn to this particular book at this time of my life. It is about letting go of the past and making a positive decision to live in the face of loss. In the midst of a rich, brightly colored, and strange world, Lindholm somehow draws you in to experience the most intense and sensual grief, anger, love, and compassion, and to make it your own. (Is this a kind of surrealism?) This book is a classic of fantasy literature, and should never have gone out of print.
Thoughtful fantasy with enjoyable characters.......2000-04-16
Harpy's Flight is the beginning of Megan Lindholm's Windersinger trilogy, which, although overlooked by many and often regarded as just another couple of fantasy novels, stands far out of the crowd. Lindholm created a vivid world and tells us enough of it to understand the deeper mechanisms that keep it working but still leaves enough to the reader to let him fill in the rest with his own imagination. In Harpy's Flight character development seems a little shaky compared to the following novels, but Ki and Vandien, the two main protagonists, are highly enjoyable to be acquainted with. There are some quite surprising twists in the story and the book will keep you glued to it to find out what it all comes down to. You probably won't regret buying this book.

The Fantastic Cutaway book of Flight.......2002-12-09
My 2 year old plane fanatic loves this book which has large pictures on every page of planes, helicopters, airships and hot air balloon. I have tried to find a similar book but cannot find one with such great pictures.
Book Description
Amelia's little spin covers six continents and takes her to fourteen countries. Two full-spread maps, plus smaller inset maps throughout, enable children to follow Amelia's amazing journey.

Map skills.......2007-07-27
Teachers, if you want to turn a lesson on map skills into a fun activity, this is the book to do it with. Easy text with great illustrations (map inserts in every page) can be turned into a "map chase" around the world in the classroom.
A toddler, his mom, and his dad love it!.......2000-06-04
Despite the "reading level" of age 4-8, and despite the trade journals' implication that it's for elementary school classes, my 18-month-old son has insisted on many readings in the first few days since we got it home. We love the rich pictures (rich both in coloring and in detail to comment on); the alliterative text that rolls right off your tongue, even the 4th time in as many minutes; and the geographical information--which, I am ashamed to say, I am learning from at age 35! And mom loves the great girl role model.
Fantastic!.......2000-03-29
Amelia's Fantastic Flight is a joy to read with your kids. The colorful pictures and the rhyming pattern take kids on a wonderful journey in Amelia's airplane. The different countries and the maps instill some great knowledge to younger children that will help them in later years. The tale of little Amelia is simply fantastic. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone! At the end when she is reading the book with the space shuttle helped my little one imagine her own adventures as an astronaut!

Long ago- so long ago that the details of the conflict are lost and only the merest legends remain- the world of Velgarth was wracked by sorcerous wars. The population was decimated. The land quickly turned to wilderness and was given over to the forest and the magically-engendered creatures that had been used to fight those wars, while the people who remained fled to the eastern coastline, there to resume their shattered lives. Humans are resilient creatures, however, and it was not overlong before the population once again was on the increase, and folk began to move westward again, building new kingdoms out of the wilderness. One such kingdom was Valdemar. Founded by the once-Baron Valdemar and those of his people who had chosen exile with him rather than facing the wrath of a selfish and cruel monarch, it lay on the very western-and-northernmost edge of the civilized world. In part due to the nature of its founders, the monarchs of Valdemar welcomed fugitives and fellow exiles, and the customs and habits of its people had over the years become a polyglot patchwork. In point of fact, the one rule by which the monarchs of Valdemar governed their people was "There is no 'one, true way.'" Governing such an ill-assorted lot of subjects might have been impossible- had it not been for the Heralds of Valdemar. The Heralds served many functions; they were administrative overseers, dispensers of justice, information gatherers, even temporary military advisors; answerable only to the Monarch and their own circle of peers. Such a system might have seemed ripe for abuse- it would have been, but for the Companions.

My Least Favorite But Still Good.......2007-05-07
This was my least favorite in the Herald's Series. Although I particularly like how the sex was handled, practically, without unnecessary additives. I would have thought Heralds would have no problem perceiving each other's feelings enough to know there was no danger of love happening, but I guess it made for good plot tension. This was a good, but not great book.
A growing up story.......2006-01-17
This is volume two of the story of Talia, a young girl who becomes the Queen's Own Herald in the land of Valdemar. In the first volume, we leared of Talia's history in an abusive home and her being Chosen by a Companion and her training at the Herald Collegium. In this volume that story continues from the point where she receives her Whites as a full fledged Herald and must set out on her 18 month internship under the tutelage of a qualified Herald.
The beauty of this volume is that it is really all about the coming of age of Talia. The poor abused girl who is still very unsure of herself, has to deal with many challenges along the border's frontier. Most of her troubles are really internal as she has a unique Gift (Empathy) for which there are no existing rules or precedents. It does not help her that her hold on her Gift is actually quite tenuous. Throughout the book she struggles with herself.
The book is a wonderful story of how this insecure young woman becomes a mature and secure woman who is comfortable with her unique gifts, is comfortable with who she is, and sheds her inhibitions and fear of men as she spends the 18 months with Kris. While all of this is going on, she is also starting to realize that her true love is another man and we get to watch and observe her feelings for Dirk develop steadily even though Dirk is never present in the book itself.
This volume has restored my faith in this series. The first volume can now be seen as setting the context and filling in the history of this fascinating character. While I was not totally happy with the first volume - essentially its almost direct copying of an earlier trilogy - this second volume has gone in a totally different direction and was a wonderfully engrossing read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.
Second Book Of Trilogy.......2005-10-31
I have read all three books of Heralds of Valdemar in a week. As one reader commented ,This is second book of a Trilogy and it shows. Talia becomes a full herald and starts normal internship for one and half year journey. She lost her control of gift.
Most of the story resolves around them going from town to town and lost of control of gift. Character build up is very well written. Learning more about typical herald duties help to understand World of Valdemar. Being a Dungeon Master myself, I liked these parts of story.
But there were some points, I disliked. A battle against brigands where 15 to 2 (well 4 with companions). Unrealistic combat.
Also when a healer understand that she lost her shields, she only tell them get your shields instead of helping her.
Overall trilogy was good.
good not great.......2005-10-30
This is the second in the series. Talia serves her journeyman phase as a Herald by riding a village circuit, accompanied by a fellow seasoned Herald Kris. During that time, she loses control of her "Gift" which has not been properly trained during her apprenticeship as a Herald trainee. Though the friendship, then romance between Talia and Kris is strong, the story is rather monotonous, and not much happens. Books 1 and 3 are better.
Not as good as later books in this series, but a must-read.......2005-10-19
ALthough somewhat lacking in maturity, the "Arrows" books are a must-read if you want to really appreciate the later volumes in the Valdemar series. Think of it as a chance to grow up in Valdemar as we follow Queen's Own Herald Talia through a growing threat to the kingdom. Definitely darker in tone than "Arrows of the Queen."
