4 out of 5 stars Jeff's review.......2007-04-03

The cover gives 14 color examples. The 78 pages are packed with
an average of 8 black and white outlines to a page.
This is a lot of ideas but would be challenging to enlarge for
pattern making. A limited range of symetric styles are divided
into four groups.

4 out of 5 stars Design by eras/styles.......2007-01-10

This book is not my cup of tea, but it's great for someone who's looking for a design from a certain era. The book is broken down by the different eras or styles: Victorian Geometric, Art Nouveau, Victorian Floral, Edwardian, and 1920's. All the designs have a lot of horizontal and vertical lines in them. Also, it's all in black and white so you have to use your imagination to color it. The back of the front cover and back cover has examples in color.

5 out of 5 stars Stained Glass Designs from Dover.......2006-08-08

This is an excellent resource book for stained glass artisans. It has a variety of styles and eras in easy to duplicate drawings. Projects range from easy to intricate, designs (in some instances) can be mixed and matched.

Dover has a good selection of stained glass books which provide wonderful references to many and varied types of stained glass design.

I've been looking for ideas for simple patterns; this book helped me a lot!

4 out of 5 stars Great book and great ideas.......2006-07-06

This book is great for traditional patterns, specially for the ones from Great Bretain. It shows different types of patterns depending on the period of influence, like Edwardian, Art Deco and others. I wished the patterns showed some color!!!!

The Stained Glass Garden Book is very informational. Priced at a reasonable price on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Beginner projects and fun things.......2007-08-10

This book RULES!! and it is hardcover. Chuck full of groovy projects and nifty tips for all levels of glass wranglers. I fully endorse it, and am itching to get started on the next project!

5 out of 5 stars Cool projects.......2007-04-11

I have been working with stained glass for awhile now,and I am always looking for new ideas.I could not afford the classes and materials,so I got hired on in a glass shop. Now,I make things all the time, for other people. This book gave me some some great ideas of things to make for the garden.Flowers don't last forever, but glass looks beautiful and lasts for a long time.I love the sprinklers,I think they are lovely!

4 out of 5 stars Something different.......2007-04-10

I enjoy using this book, it is well laid out with materials list for every project, it has easy to follow steps, very clear illustrations and lovely ideas.
Like most books there are some projects I don't particularly like - but other people may like them, even so these projects can lead to new ideas using different types of materials.

It also contains some challenging projects that in time - who knows I may take on

5 out of 5 stars What I was looking for.......2007-01-22

I am a novice in stained glass...I know the fundamentals of cutting, soldering, finishing, etc.. What this book provides is some really cool extensions and applications of the basic skills. There are awesome designs that will be great in any garden either as a gift or, if you are an artist looking to produce pieces, works that will sell themselves.

Book Description

Outstanding collection of 78 royalty-free motifs focusing on nature themes — the sun, bamboo plants, long reeds and grasses; floral scenes with birds, small animals, fish, plus many abstract designs, all imbued with the lovely, tranquil lines and rhythms of nature. Varied shapes make the designs adaptable to wide range of projects.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Good Designs but no color guides for clarity.......2006-06-27

The designs are very good. The problem I see with this book is there no finished designs or color guides. If you are new to stained glass it could be difficult to visualize a finished design. But all in all a good design book.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting designs but the title is misleading.......2003-09-15

I found some very interesting nature patterns in this book, but almost a fifth of the book contained designs (at least 12) which I found unrecognizable as anything belonging to nature or anything else. If you are into these abstract designs, then this is an added bonus. I was disappointed and would rather have had traditional nature designs as pictured on the cover.

Book Description

Glass offered Wright an ideal medium through which to accomplish his goal of opening up Americans' living spaces. This book explores many facets of the architect's work with this "magical material", including his world-renowned art glass designs. The Wright-at-a-Glance series showcases the work of one of the world's best-known architects. Comprising little twelve books in all, this series offers an overview of Wright's life, buildings, and designs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars BEWARE - This book is physically tiny.......2004-02-05

I obviously did not have read the reviews close enough. This is
a tiny book with pictures so small that it's useless to me.

5 out of 5 stars Wright+glass=beauty.......2001-03-28

"Frank Lloyd Wright's Glass Designs," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of "mini-books" devoted to the work of one of the world's greatest architects. This volume, which explores Wright's interest in glass, contains many praiseworthy features: Lind's concise yet informative text, a wealth of stunning full-color photographs, fascinating sidebar quotes from Wright and others, and a useful bibliography for further reading.

The plentiful photographs truly capture the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright. We can see his bold work with colored glass and geometric patterns in windows of many different shapes and sizes. It's marvelous to see how each glass creation complements the larger architectural space of which it is a part.

Houses represented in the book include the Darwin Martin house, the Schaberg house, the Roberts house, and many more. But my favorite photograph is a breathtaking two-page spread of the second Jacobs house. If you love Wright, if you love glass, or if you love the art of home design, you will certainly love this excellent little book.

5 out of 5 stars Good things come in small packages.......2000-11-10

I ordered this book to get glass design ideas for my new house. It's tiny but worth its weight in gold. Sharp photographs (32/57 pp.) and minimal description provide just what I needed.

4 out of 5 stars Wright at a Glance.......2000-05-17

Great coffee table book (despite its size). Lots of photos that give a quick oversight to the breadth of work by this architect/artist.

Pierre Rosenberg, the Chardin scholar and President-Director of the Musée du Louvre, had one overriding goal in mind when assembling the exhibition of which Chardin is the catalog: "to present the artist's finest paintings, the most perfect, the most harmonious, the paintings that leave nothing to be desired." The 99 paintings reproduced in this book are a testimony to the success of that endeavor. There are also six essays by Chardin experts and an extensively researched chronology.

Chardin's still lifes and genre scenes have been deeply appreciated for centuries for what Rosenberg calls "the grave, silent quality that encourages the onlooker to silent reverie." He is incapable of untruth: his subjects--jugs and bowls, glasses, cherries, housemaids, boys at play, dogs and cats--are painted without a touch of irony, embellishment, or drama.

It is painful to report that this volume is extremely disappointing visually, with plates that are either poorly reproduced or reproduced from poor transparencies and are slightly greenish or washed out. Except for details, which do show Chardin's close harmonies and painterly touch, the pictures look flat and dull. Art historians, of course, will see the paintings in the flesh and use this book as only an aide-memoire, but for ordinary, nonprofessional art lovers, the 20-year-old catalog of the great 1979 Chardin exhibition gives a far better sense of the quiet perfection of this subtle artist. Even a pocket book from Abrams' Discoveries series, Chardin: An Intimate Art, by Helene Prigent and Pierre Rosenberg, is far superior. Although its reproductions are minuscule by comparison, they are at least clear and clean, with colors that appear to be close to those of the original works. The little book may be only an hors d'oeuvre, but it has all the flavor that is missing in the full-course meal. --Peggy Moorman

Book Description

Jean Simeon Chardin (1699-1779) started his career with a great interest in still life, a subject held in particularly low regard by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. According to the Academy, the most important paintings contained human figures (most highly ranked were mythological or historical subjects) and paintings with no human figures were at the bottom of the hierarchy. As the Academy exerted an enormous influence, truly making or breaking an artist's career. Aware of this hierarchy, Chardin began including figures in his work in about 1730, mainly women and children. These scenes of domestic interiors were unprecedented because Chardin gave them a greater intensity and intimacy than the usual lighthearted depiction of everyday life. Chardin's technique also set him apart from his contemporaries, as he did not prepare for a painting by doing many drawings or studies, but rather started right on the canvas itself. Diderot once called Chardin the 'great magician' because of the way he united color, composition and subject. With 100 colour illustrations of Chardin's work and six essays by leading experts in the field, the book will discuss his biography, his use of ceramics and glass and the complex history of engravings of his paintings.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars additional information to editorial above.......2007-05-20

I just wanted to add this to the review above: the 1979 catalog can still be found quite easily, but it contains mostly black and white reproductions of the works. There are only 23 colour images of the more than 400 pages in the 1979 book. The 2000 catalog is almost entirely in colour... However, I cannot properly judge the quality of the reproductions in the latter, as I have not seen one of those amazing paintings in reality yet.

5 out of 5 stars A very satisfying book.......2001-01-29

I have to disagree with the above editorial. I compared the reproductions with others that I have, and although there are sometimes subtle differences they are not always to the disadvantage of this book. Some pictures are better than others, but the advantage here is that each reproduction is on a page by itself with commentary on an adjoining page-a catalogue layout that I always prefer in that it give the painting room to breathe and because I'm not reading on one page and finding the relevant painting six pages later. The book is obviously done by true lovers of the painter. Chardin is profound and a painter's painter. You can see and feel why he was adored by Cezanne, Soutine, Manet, Proust, and I'm sure many other significant artists. He has rightly been called a virtuoso of stillness. Even in reproduction, pieces of fruit, kitchenware and game animals are alive and quietly glowing from within with a warmth, compassion and a kind of subtle majesty-it's really deep in an indescribable way. In my opinion a very worthwhile purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2000-07-27

This book is simply gorgeous. I had been well acquainted with Chardin a number of years ago, and picked up this book on a whim at the store. Rediscovering this master was a true delight. His paintings are deceptively simple: behind the cool colors and the measured scenes lies a captivating energy. This particular volume is very well done. The reproductions are of superior quality and the accompanying essays by the world's most renowned Chardin expert are enjoyable and enlightening. Art books are expensive, but this is one that is well worth the investment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good resource book.......2007-01-10

This is a good book for someone wanting to do period stained glass work for their house or for just doing stained glass.

4 out of 5 stars Very good ilustrations of Praire Design examples.......2007-01-09

The book is very useful for the ones who want start on the Praire Design stained glass technique very popular on Frank Lloyd Wright's praire houses.

4 out of 5 stars Prairie Designs for Stained Glass Windows.......2006-01-18

I am a fan of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the United States, as exemplified in Mission and Prairie designs. I used this book to assist me in designing tile and mosaic murals using themes from the Arts and Crafts period. With a little time, a copy machine, and some colored pencils, you can make some original designs for use in your own home or business.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Designs But No Photos of Finished Projects.......2000-08-01

This book has some very nice designs, but I was disappointed that there were no photographs of completed projects. I am not very familiar with the prairie style, so I would have liked getting some suggestion from the designer as to possible colors, textures, and layout. A few of the patterns have shading (10 out of 48) to suggest color layouts, but of course the design I wanted to make was not shaded (Murphy's Law I guess).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent pattern book.......2006-10-19

I have this book and have referred to it many times and have used several of the patterns. There is a nice variety and the patterns cover a broad collection of interests and tastes. Excellent book and a must have in the stained glass studio.

3 out of 5 stars It is Ok but..........2005-07-19

The designs are wonderful;however, they are all in black and white.. I expected more...

5 out of 5 stars great designs abound.......2003-09-14

Not only were there great traditional designs, but I also found some beautiful and unique nature designs which I hadn't seen in other stained glass books and I was definitely pleased. The contemporary designs range from fairly simple to complex, but do not contain patterns that are unrecognizable as some stained glass patterns books do. This book definitely has variety, variety, variety.

4 out of 5 stars A regular source of inspiration for me.......2000-11-22

I have used a good number of the designs presented in this book for my own creations. Lots of contemporary floral designs and some traditional victorian patterns. Projects range from relatively simple to very complex - designs that fit very well in homes as in commercial establishments. I have adapted one design in this book to be placed in a piece of furniture that I created. All is in black and white, no pictures of completed projects.

5 out of 5 stars Chock full of useful techniques.......2005-11-03

After I began taking a stained glass class, I ran to the library and the bookstore. My instructor is good, but he's only one opinion. I must have looked at a dozen books, but this is one of the two that I brought home. I'm certainly glad I did.

Like many such books, there are three sections: basic techiques, projects, and a gallery that shows what you can do (but offers no instruction -- just an ooh-ahh opportunity).

The techniques section is among the best I've encountered. In a sense, the info that beginners need is all about the same: the supplies you need, the types of glass available, etc. However, Creative Stained Glass always seems to have just a little more info that do the other books... maybe it's just four paragraphs about the kinds of solder instead of two, but at this point you need all the info you can get.

That first section is 40 pages, which is more than most books devote to the basics. The writing is friendly, too.

In addition, the projects are pretty! I've seen far too many stained glass books in which half the projects are, well, lame. The glass equivalent of a crying clown painted on velvet. The projects are more likely to be leaded rather than to use copper foil; most beginner books seem to choose copper. Each project has about three pages of instruction, plus the patter; my one quibble is that it often doesn't tell you by how much to enlarge the pattern.

I'm not positive I could have learned stained glass wholly from this or any book (this is one area in which a hands-on class makes all the difference), but this one would have given me the most confidence.

Overall, I've gotten the best advice from this book. I'm glad it's in my library. You should probably grab a copy, too.

stain glass is my favorite and I look at this book long ago when I am little. This book is really good for stain glass projects.

4 out of 5 stars All designs need to be enlarged.......2001-04-16

The only reason I gave this book a 4 is all designs need to be enlarged, and there are no pictures of the finished designs.

Below is a portion of the publisher's note within the book, that will give you some good information.

"Bevels and glass jewels add sparkling points of interest to any stained glass project. This book includes 83 floral, geometric, bird, butterfly, fish, Art Nouveau and Victorian style patterns that have been specially designed to highlight the faceted and shaped glass pieces that appear within them. The patterns appear in square, rectangular, circular, octagonal and free-form shapes and can be used for lightcatchers, door and window panels, box tops and glass projects. Bevels and jewels are no more difficult to incorporate into a pattern than regular stained glass sections."

Later in this same section they go on further about the contents of the book.

"The illustrations on pages 4-7 show the true size (and in some cases two views) of all the bevels and jewels that appear within the patterns on pages 8-64. The patterns, however, appear within the book at half their actual size and will need to be xeroxed at a 200% enlargement in order for the bevels and jewels to fit. The measurements that are printed next to each pattern give the dimensions to which it will be enlarged when doubled in size."

My impressions of the book, as I just received it are positive. There are some pretty nice designs inside from the tradition looking door insert types to some pretty intricate bird, fish and flower designs. None except for the cover are shown as a picture, all are sketches and drawings. Inside both covers are drawings with suggested colors of 11 of the designs within, but the rest only have the patterns in black and white. All patterns have other patterns on the back side.

Some details are:

8 butterfly designs (some with flowers)

3 birds

3 fish

7 flowers (distinctly flowers and not stylized geometric renditions)

The bulk of the book, is stylized flower or geometric designs. Really neat looking ones. This is not surprising as the bevels and jewels are limited to specific geometric shapes.

All in all a decent book.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible source book.......2004-09-03

If you can't find a design you can use for inspiration, you're just not looking hard enough. Not for beginners since the designs are incredibly intricate, but your creativity will wake up and take notice.

4 out of 5 stars Super source book.......2004-06-05

Originally, this was a pair of portfolios of designs in the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was not just twisty flowers, though some people like to stereotype it into those narrow parameters. This is not a how-to book with cutting patterns. It has only the paintings with suggested scale. On a few pages, motifs overlap each other, so you can't just scan and go: you have to build up your idea of the covered areas. One pictorial arched piece is missing the right third, again a challenge to finish it yourself.

The designs range from splendidly romantic conceptions of floral forms to windows a-scamper with squirrels or lizards to some that are distinctly eerie. Bats fly across the moon amidst dead trees. A woman combs her hair before a volcano flowing lava. An octopus and a sea-weed maiden struggle underwater--in combat? in love? Several have fishes and there are even cat designs.

You don't have to see these only as windows. I've converted two to rug designs by taking out the excess black lines of supports or piecing necessary to glass work. You may want to take only one area out of an entire design to render in wood, or do a mosaic version of the whole thing. This is a starting point for the competent craftsman who loves the Art Nouveau energy, not an end product.

3 out of 5 stars Not really Art Nouveau.......2003-02-18

Though some of the designs are nice, most are way too busy for my taste, and I wouldn't really call them Art Nouveau. Quite a few of them look more like Renaissance style stained glass, and some of them look modern (like the sailboat patterns?). It is in color, though, which is nice. Very complicated - definately not for beginning stained glass crafters.

Nice plates with dimensions. Good for projects and for idea's. I highly reccomend it.
