Bill Bryson has made a living out of traveling and then writing about it. In The Lost Continent he re-created the road trips of his childhood; in Neither Here nor There he retraced the route he followed as a young backpacker traversing Europe. When this American transplant to Britain decided to return home, he made a farewell walking tour of the British countryside and produced Notes from a Small Island. Once back on American soil and safely settled in New Hampshire, Bryson once again hears the siren call of the open road--only this time it's a trail. The Appalachian Trail, to be exact. In A Walk in the Woods Bill Bryson tackles what is, for him, an entirely new subject: the American wilderness. Accompanied only by his old college buddy Stephen Katz, Bryson starts out one March morning in north Georgia, intending to walk the entire 2,100 miles to trail's end atop Maine's Mount Katahdin.

If nothing else, A Walk in the Woods is proof positive that the journey is the destination. As Bryson and Katz haul their out-of-shape, middle-aged butts over hill and dale, the reader is treated to both a very funny personal memoir and a delightful chronicle of the trail, the people who created it, and the places it passes through. Whether you plan to make a trip like this one yourself one day or only care to read about it, A Walk in the Woods is a great way to spend an afternoon. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes--and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.

For a start there's the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz's overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But A Walk in the Woods is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson's acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America's last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, A Walk in the Woods is destined to become a modern classic of travel literature.

2 out of 5 stars How not to discover the Appalachian Trail.......2007-10-13

This book has obviously appealed to many readers. Some seem to be attracted by the humour, others by the subject matter and many by the writing skills of the author himself. There are some interesting factoids buried in this book, and some descriptive passages were terrific.

This is the first of Mr Bryson's books that I have not enjoyed. The antics of Messrs Bryson and Katz, two middle-aged, ego-centric and totally underprepared hikers, irritated me enormously.

I am glad that this is not the first of Mr Bryson's books I have read. If it was, it would almost certainly be the last.

4 out of 5 stars A Walk in the Woods.......2007-10-08

This is a book about a treacherous hike through a treacherous trail. When the author decides to take a hike on the Appalachian Trail, 2,200 miles of wilderness, who's a better choice to take with him than trusty old Katz... who was completely out of shape, had gone to rehab, and he hadn't seen in 25 years. From Bryson's adventure getting the equipment, to Katz's desperateness while trying to find a female, this is a great book cover to cover, and all the pages in between.

Several people, including me, have gone camping. So, if you have, imagine it, except for 6 months, without good campsites, and nonstop hiking all day long with massive packs on. Doesn't sound to fun, does it? I think Bryson did a great job making his torture seem comical. It's a hilarious book, the only funny nonfiction book I've ever read, which also causes it to be the only nonfiction I've ever enjoyed. But, as good as it is, while reading it I began to think it was sad. Here's why- it's nonfiction.

5 out of 5 stars Super read for anyone who wants to hike those miles.......2007-10-06

A excellent read for any person just might have the thought buried deep in the back of their mind..walking that long long trail..bring tissue and laugh until you cry.

4 out of 5 stars a fun read.......2007-10-03

This book book taught me a lot about friendship, American history, and most of all "rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail" I learned about the Appalachian Trail--which I really didn't know about at all. I know I will explore the AT more in the near future. I will tell my son about this book and highly suggest to him that he read it. I will also read more by the author Bill Bryson--I enjoyed his sense of humor. :)

5 out of 5 stars lol.......2007-09-12

Bill will have you laughing out loud as he recounts his adventures on the Appalachian Trail. If you like long-distance hiking or great travel books, check this one out. It's a real pleasure to read and covers the history of the AT to boot.

    Book Description

Boston, that historical center of colonial charm, splendid parklands, superior universities, and technological development, is an endlessly fascinating place. It is the cauldron, not just of American freedom, but also, arguably, of modern democracy itself. The great names of Boston—Revere, Hancock, Adams, Kennedy, Lodge, O'Neill—are American legends. The stops along the Freedom and the Black Freedom trails are cornerstones of Early American life. Luckily for visitors, this old port city is compact, easily walkable, and eminently photogenic.
Gleaming skyscrapers have asserted their place in the skyline, but Boston seems little changed from the days when Henry David Thoreau dropped in on the Old Corner Bookstore. In this stunning new collection of full-color portraits, renowned photographer Carol M. Highsmith captures the principal historic landmarks from the African Meeting House to John F. Kennedy's birthplace in Brookline; neighborhoods from tony Beacon Hill to the eclectic South End; thriving downtown shops and restaurants; the major universities and celebrated museums; and the "Emerald Necklace" of parklands. A lively, information-packed introduction and captions by award-winning writer Ted Landphair offer the perfect complement to Highsmith's outstanding images.
Boston: A Pictorial Souvenir celebrates the enduring elegance of New England's hub city. It is the perfect souvenir of a memorable visit, and the ideal gift for anyone who savors history, unforgettable architecture, cultural vitality, and high-tech innovation—the diversity that is truly Boston.

5 out of 5 stars Great Little Book That Won't Make You Look Like a Tourist.......2007-08-29

I brought this book with me when I revisited New York City last year, and it came in extremely handy in helping me navigate the different sections of Manhattan. The book divides the big city into eight neighborhoods, each given its own fold-out area map and chapter that gives a brief history & overview of that neighborhood, as well as suggestions and tips for activities, places to eat, and hotels at which to stay. There's also a fold-out map of the MTA subway system that's easier to use than the giant folded ones you get at the subway stations.

The size of the book is perfect for carrying in your jacket pocket or small handbag, and because it's in a nice little black-book format, it's not as conspicuous as some other tourist guides. I read through the book before my trip and made good use of sticky flags to mark pages that contained info I was sure to need during my trip. I recommend this book for any first-time visitor to New York City, but it's also great if you've already been there several times but could still use a few tips.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better!.......2007-01-17

I travel to NYC for work and I enjoy being able to explore during my free time - this book has proven itself helpful over and over again. The fold out subway map is the main reason I bought the book - I think I need to have that page laminated!

Still, I have three small suggestions to make this Little Black Book even better: 1) a place to stash a pencil/pen (a small elastic loop would work) 2) two or three blank pages in the back of each section for adding our own "finds" for each neighborhood and 3) a small envelope in the front for tossing in business cards, Metro cards, etc.

Can't wait for the second edition!

5 out of 5 stars The Little Black Book of New York.......2007-01-05

Very informative and splits up New York by sections to make it easy to find the area you want to see and what attractions are available.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-10-01

This book is pretty good to see a historical comparison of Washington DC "then" vs. "now." The most disappointing aspect here is that a lot of the current pictures seem to have been taken on the same overcast late fall/early winter day. Washington DC is one of the most beautiful cities in the world but a lot of the current pictures don't capture that. The historical pictures and overall comparisons are pretty good though and I would have rated this a "5" if they had done a better job capturing the city's beauty. A solid "4" none the less.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting historical look at the nation's capitol.......2005-04-01

Having seen a few other books showing historical photos of different cities' landmarks and their modern looks, I was interested to see what this book would offer. I was not disappointed, fiding the choice of subjects ranging form the famous to the obscure, painting a picture of a Washington long ago.

With many of the more famous buildings in Washington having been built in the last 70 years, there aren't as many older structural pictures to hold up against a view of the current looks. This is often refelcted by what originally stood on the site, and then the facing page shows what is built on the site now. Obviously, there are pictures showing the White House, Capitol, and a few other notable buildings to examine for small changes, but the majority of the book features things the average visitor wouldn't normally notice.

To people who have spent some time in this great city, they would greatly appreciate where the modern looks and everyday scenery has come from. To the average reader, this book would be an interesting coffee table book to entertain the curious.

4 out of 5 stars Washington DC Then and Now.......2000-07-18

Washington D.C., Then and Now, is full of many fascinating pictures taken in and around the Washington D.C. area. The city is rich in history and full of a number of buildings, monuments and historic areas. Through the years, the city has changed and developed around these landmarks. Washington D.C., Then and Now traces this development and change through pictures.

The premise behind the book is to show the reader each area of the city as it appeared using archival photographs on one page, and comparing it to a recent picture of the same area, taken from approximately the same location, to demonstrate how the area has evolved.

The author has organized the book by street name or area. The earliest known picture of the Capitol, taken in 1846, is the most famous picture (Only seven are known to exist). There is an interesting story about how the rare picture was obtained. You'll have to get the book to find out.

Whether you have traveled to Wahington DC or are just interested in the pictoral history of our nation's capital, the book has a lot to offer. It also makes an excellent coffee table book for your guests to peruse.

The book has clear maps that DEF. help in getting around. The subway locations were clearly marked, and you get a close view of each section of the city. My only complaint is that it always seems like the restaurant, or store, or coffee shop, etc. that I am looking for is never in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide for NYC- the only one you will need!.......2007-09-12

This book has saved my neck on more than one occasion. I use it daily to get around the city. It has everything you need. We liked it so much we bought an extra one for our guests when they come to visit- don't want to be parted from it. Never know when you will need to find a great restaurant in mid-town or look up the closest post office or bank or library.... Not to mention the great fold out map of the metro at the back of the book. BRILLIANT buy this book and you won't need to waste any money on others.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-08-24

I think this book(let) is just awesome. It comes in a size of my pocket-agenda and the many detailed maps (depending on the points of interesent you want it to be shown) are a great helper. I'm going to NYC soon and not as a tourist, but as a visitor, so I really don't need to wait in line in front of Empire State Building - I'll rather browse this book!

5 out of 5 stars Not for Tourist.......2007-07-20

This is a great book if you are moving to NY. Great size - useful maps and great things you need to know if you are staying any length of time.

    5 out of 5 stars Enormously Helpful..........2007-07-17

This is by far one of the most useful products I've purchased of late. I recently travelled to the city for the second time, and decided to get this in preparation. My friends came to rely on my "little black book," and I was constantly whipping it out...to check the subway map, to look for the nearest restaurant, or to check out museum info. As I begin to prepare for moving to the city next year, I'm not letting this guide out of my sight.

1 out of 5 stars Not so useful.......2007-06-16

There's only so much you can pack in a book. The Zagat guide is woefully short when it comes to listings and does not (cannot) review a vast number of restaurants out there. For example, Taim, a great place to get Falafel in West Village is not mentioned here. Another example: check out the number of restaurants it lists in Union Square. Also, it's far more difficult to 'search' a book than just search for something online. The amount of page-flipping is tiresome and does not always yield great results.

Put simply, this is a relic of the bygone era - the information it contains is much better delivered via the internet. Far more detailed reviews are available online - why waste money on a book?

3 out of 5 stars A good dictionary of restaurants.......2007-02-22

Zagats is a good resource, but there are just so many listings and not enough information. I have found many times that I don't agree with the restaurant reviews - which I suppose can happen, but their reviews tend to be very negative at times for restaurants that are quite good. It is nice that they get input from the consumers, but it would be nice to have a little professional input as well and not have reviews that are so biased.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent But Irritating.......2007-02-13

By Bill Marsano. The Zagat Survey series finds itself in an "enviable" position between newspapers that publish "professional" but infrequent reviews and dining blogs that rate more often but too often indulge in "amateurish score-settling," "tirades" and hostility. Zagat is almost always "up to date" if not "up to the minute"; it's easily "navigated" and many readers come to rely on it. All the dope a diner needs is in Zagat, as are, unfortunately, more quotation marks than "anyone" wants. I understand that they indicate that specific comments are contributors' own "words" asnd not the editors' "opinions," but they have long since outlived their "usefulness." The result is a "slim volume" whose "malformed prose" sounds like a "cacaphony."--Bill Marsano is an award-winning writer on travel, wine and spirits.

4 out of 5 stars An Essential Reference.......2007-01-24

This is a book that I find essential t o the kind of lifestyle that I try to maintain. It contains useful information on the world of fine and
not so fine dining in a format that I find easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Topical and Informative.......2007-01-12

If you're wondering about a restaurant in NYC, the first (and only) guide to grab is Zagat's. More efficient than the internet, if not as detailed. Very easy to read up on a place before you go. It's the one guide locals and tourists can both agree on. Very hard to navigate the choices in New York without it. The only challenge is keeping current, as the restaurant scene changes so quickly. Get the 2006 version, and you're already out of date!

4 out of 5 stars A good Lonely Planet substitute.......2007-08-24

I decided to try something else than Lonely Planet for a change and I am happy. It definitely lacks (more) photos which catch the eye in LP! Other than that I have no complaints. I've found some great tips on what to do in NYC and what to skip. The info in the book is in my opinion the same as in the LP editions, you only need to get adjusted to a different layout (info on, say, entrance fees is usually at the end of an entry and not at the begining as in LP).

    5 out of 5 stars perfect!.......2007-07-13

If this is your first or your tenth time visiting NY, you'll definitely enjoy this excellent guidebook. An incredible source of information complete and up-to-date. The map is a plus and...it's a very good map too! This is a guidebook with an attitude. A guide written by a new yorker hence not too fond of the sometimes typical tourists attractions. But even so he manage to give full details on every little thing, like it or not. And Amazon was superb once again and I got my guidebook at the speed of light!

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-06-06

The most helpful part of the book were the maps and the restaurant information. I was really looking for a Rick Steves type of guidebook for New York. This was not it!

5 out of 5 stars Frommer's is the best at these time and again..........2007-05-21

When I plan on traveling somewhere I haven't been, or somewhere I'm returning to, I am always sure to have the newest version on Frommer's handy. Actually, even the older versions are still a good resource for information, too. I cannot say a bad thing about this guidebook.

4 out of 5 stars Frommer's New York City 2007.......2007-05-12

If you are looking for fancy pics, this is NOt your book. But if you want to have a peek to New Yorkers life, do purchase this book. Plenty of text and good advice beginning with how to get a taxi from where you can find best burgers in the city. If you are flying over Atlantic, you have plenty of time to get through with this book. Pair it with some more traditional tourist guide with pics and you have a working duo. Little minus from the fact that there are some old info, like the book is for 2007 and there's some info that some places will be closed in 2007.

2 out of 5 stars New York is not equal to Manhattan.......2007-08-07

I borrowed this book from a friend due to the fact that my NYC trip was unplanned. I usually am a Lonely Planet fan, but I was left with no choice but to use this one. I am impressed with the quality of the book, and yes, I do agree that this is one that can be browsed after the trip, and not forgotten in an attic. However, the coverage is completely restricted to Manhattan, and the rest of the boroughs are condensed into a "Farther Afield" section. New York City is not equal to Manhattan. Although most of the sights are in Manhattan, I am sure that there are plenty of other sights to see in the other boroughs as well.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide .......2007-07-05

This guide lists information about NYC divided into areas of the city. There are great walking tours to use. Eyewitness makes the best guides for travelers.

    5 out of 5 stars What a Great Book.......2007-06-27

My family recently took a trip to New York. We had never been before, so I decided to buy this book to help us work our way around Manhattan and see the sights. I can say with 100% that this book was AMAZING! It's pictures and descriptions are right on, and the maps make it completely easy to find all of the points of interest. The subway maps helped to figure out the subway, and the dining list gave plenty of good restaurants to choose from! I love this book, and if I ever take another trip to a big city I will be sure to check and see if there is one of these books for it! Thank you!!

2 out of 5 stars Lots of glossy pictures, but not very much information. .......2007-05-30

I am new to living in New York and was looking for a book with substance, as well as pictures illustrating the narrative. This book looked great, but I found it disappointing and ended up returning it. It does a nice job giving a visual overview of the city and attractions, but it fails to provide much depth via writing. If you are expecting any historical information or a description of the area beyond visuals, you will not be pleased.

I ended up buying the Insight City Guide (made by the Discovery Channel) of New York instead. I highly recommend it! It provides a number of big, glossy pictures, but it also contains writing to give the reader a greater sense of depth and understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate travel guide.......2007-04-03

Our family of four went to NYC for spring break and purchased the DK book beforehand to help plan our time wisely. Although we didn't leave Manhattan, the book covers all of the city very well. Maps are excellent, pictures are done in exquisite DK style. A must have for travelers. We also have the Paris one from a few years ago - made travel and sightseeing there much easier as well. Also a more compact size than some, making it easier to pack.

5 out of 5 stars Endless New York.......2007-09-03

This book is right, the things to do in New York are endless. My family and I have made many trips to New York, everytime we go we find something new to do. I enjoyed taking my daughter to see the Rockettes at Christmas time and then taking her on a carriage ride. Last Thanksgiving we went to see the Macy's Day Parade and it was incredible. Always something exciting to do in the Big Apple. Read the book and then take your family on a new adventure!!

    5 out of 5 stars Russian-recommended.......2007-07-19

Do you marvel at how sometimes, a complete foreigner knows more about your city than you ever cared to know? I have lived on the outskirts of Manhattan for my entire life: Brooklyn, Queens, and mostly Long Island. However, I made many frequent forays into Manhattan on the weekends, and I considered myself not the complete tyro regarding the nooks, crannies, and interesting activities that 'The City' had to offer. This book was recommended to me by a Russian immigrant, who had come to New York 10 years prior. I often marveled at all the interesting places she went, and how she knew so many good places to eat. It turns out that this is the secret! Although some of the 1001 ideas are very touristy, the vast majority are applicable to even native New Yorkers. So far I've had free hot dogs with my pints of red beer, had the strongest shots I've ever had (watermelon-flavored too!), spent more on one meal than I usually spend in one month, and I plan on doing so much more. This book doesn't only give you interesting things to do and see, it also stokes your curiosity to discover things on your own. I'm not a great reviewer, but I want to get across the point that I did thoroughly enjoy this book, and I plan on checking off the vast majority of things listed!

5 out of 5 stars Top Rate Guide to Gotham.......2006-12-26

Although I've lived in Gotham for several years, this book helped me to fall head over heels in love with the city again. After reading "The Best Things to Do in New York: 1,001 Ideas," I decided to take the authors' advice and give New York City every spare moment I had left in my very busy schedule. In 2007, I'm going to tour the tombstones at Trinity Church, take a 3-hour Circle Line cruise, record a story in Grand Central Station, drink afternoon tea at the Waldorf-Astoria, buy lunch at Zabar's and picnic in Riverside Park, take in a comedy show at Caroline's and walk through several neighborhoods just to revel in their historical and architectural treasures.

This is a top rate guide to Gotham, one that's ideal for tourists, transplants or natives. Pick it up and I guarantee you'll be scheduling dozens of new adventures on your calendar as well.

5 out of 5 stars HAPPY CUNY STUDENT - I WILL PASS THE CST!!!!.......2007-09-14

This book is a great resource for special educators. I think this book can be used as a reference in the classroom as well as for test preparation. I like the fact that this book explores all the aspects of special education and especially the laws. Being a special educator, I can relate with many of the scenario questions.

1 out of 5 stars If you want a book without typos, skip this purchase..........2007-09-07

I was very disappointed with this book. Words are spelled wrong, there are typos on every other page, certain review questions during the practice test are missing answers, and some answers give you a letter (ie: answer c) but then the explanation corresponds with answer a. I was so upset because I was really trying to cram and this book did not help at all because I kept getting angry about the fact that I spent so much money for it. I just don't understand how a book can be published with typos! If I had paid under a dollar, I would forgive but since I paid A LOT of money for it, I expected something with proper grammar and correct spelling.

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but it Helps.......2007-07-09

Does this book have typos? - YES
Are the postest questions comparable to the Test? - NO

HOWEVER, aside from the practice questions, the information presented in this book (not the practice questions) is thorough and helped me pass the CST by 30 points after failing the first try by 2 points! Not all of the information is relevant but the book does a great job summarizing many areas tested on the CST. If you fail the first time around, definitely buy this book - it will help. Pay close attention to the roles of specialists in special education section (ex. school psychologists). These types of questions were on BOTH TESTS!

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-05-14

This book is to help prepare teachers for one of the state tests. There are so many spelling errors and gramatical errors that it takes away from the content of the book. You begin to focus on it after a while. Also the book repeats itself so much. You pay $70 for a book that really only needs less than half the pages it has. After I took the test i realized that not very much of the information on the test was in the book. I do not recommend this book

4 out of 5 stars This book was pretty good........2007-05-13

This is the only sp ed. review book for the CST so I got it . It did have some mistakes , typos and grammar errors but that didnt bother me to much . This book would be worth $15 but not the $65 I paid for .
