5 out of 5 stars Finally! A sewers dream resource!.......2007-07-02

Trying to find articles with photos and illustrations of sewing spaces is amazingly difficult - everything seems to center on home offices or crafting such as scrapbooking. This book has wonderful photos and suggestions, as well as many worksheets that can be used to evaluate everyone's personal needs and available spaces. Highly recommended for the avid sewer or quilter, this book will be a constant source of information, inspiration and dreaming for years to come!

5 out of 5 stars I Love this book.......2007-05-14

I purchased this book the first time many years ago. I have referred to it many times, and always planned to set up a separate sewing room but never did. I have purchased it for family members who did get to set up their room and they loved it. I have loaned it to frineds and over the years lost it. So I bought it again and am now lucky enough to be able to put all the wonderful tips into the new room we are building now. This book covers everything needed to set up a room that will be tailor made to you with your height and comfort incorporated into everthing. Definitely a must have if you spend much time sewing.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2007-03-26

If you need a little motivation to reorganize your sewing or craft space, this is a great book. The photos are plentiful, and there are lots of good ideas for storage and work surfaces, no matter how much space you can devote to it. Let it inspire you to create your own dream sewing space.

5 out of 5 stars If you love lots of photos!.......2007-03-11

I think this book is fantastic. Loaded with good before-and-after pictures, which I always find very inspiring. Also tons of simple, practical ideas. For example, I even learned a nifty trick to fold my fabrics so they always look neat. It makes a difference!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars welding.......2007-07-16

For the novice only, Broad coverage of oxyaectylene welding and cutting, soldering and general information pertaining to various metals. Only a brief mention of arc welding though. 5 star rating only for those not interested in arc welding !!!

5 out of 5 stars Great prep for welding classes.......2007-01-09

When I purchased this book I had already scheduled a stick welding class at the local vocational school. I wanted something that would help me not seem like a total noob when I got there. This book helped out greatly! This is a very infomative book and provides a good overview of all welding types.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book........2006-01-06

I like this book a lot. Good information. One sentence annoys me though. On page 7 the author states, "Pure oxygen is flammable." This is a false statement. It made me wonder if he ever used an oxyacetylene outfit when I first read it. Who hasn't accidentally tried to light the oxygen first instead of the acetylene and found that nothing happens? Higher concentrations of oxygen increase the rate of oxidation/combustion but oxygen isn't a fuel, i.e., it isn't flammable. But pure oxygen makes things that are flammable more dangerous.

The rest of the books shows that he know what he's talking about on other topics.

I recommend the book. I couldn't find many books with so much information on oxyacetylene welding. I feel that I was lucky to find this information in a book that is also a well written book.

5 out of 5 stars Super! Carry it in your toolbox for Oxy Welding.......2004-12-11

If you can afford only one book on Oxy Welding get this one, no make that two so you can have one in you toolbox and one to replace it when the one in your toolbox "grows legs" and walks off. This is "thee" book for the practical weldor and fits nicely into your toolbox. Read it, use it, take it with you where ever you go to work. The author is writing to you as your coworker not as an instructor or engineer though he is still showing you how to do it correctly and SAFELY.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent starter book for oxyacetylene!.......2002-11-16

There are so many books on welding that it is hard to figure out which one will be best for you, especially if you are a beginner.
One of the first things as a beginner is to start with oxyacetylene (gas) welding. The problem is that with most welding books, they try to focus on ALL welding forms and there is a lot of information that gets left out. For oxyacetylene welding, this is THE book. It's COMPLETE focus is on oxyacetylene. That's the bonus about this book, and it really comes across well for the beginner. If you don't know anthing about welding and want to start, buy this book! It's loaded with easy to follow instructions, practical tips, and great step-by-step procedures. It even goes into the physics and metals and thier properties in a down to earth, easy-to-comprehend way!
On the downside, the 10 easy-to-follow projects should have been chosen better because some are not applicable to the average welder (like a hay manger and farm gate).
Bottom line: When I read this book I was so pleased that I didn't put it down until I was finished. If you want to focus on oxyacetylene then this is the book for you.

      Book Description

Timber Framing has been a part of our building culture and an inspiration to mankind since the Middle Ages. As we enter a new millenium, it is designed to remain as one of building's most enduring forms, not only because of its intrinsic beauty, but because it is a pure and complete structural system.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-05-30

Excellent book, very thorough. Lots of good info on engineering, stresses and design of joints. Also good info on timbers, where they are cut in the log, shrinkage, and more. Would not ignore any of his advice if you would like your frame to be safe and last for generations.

      3 out of 5 stars Neophyte realities.......2005-09-15

This particular book is an overview. Nothing wrong with that, it's merely that I do not even approach the level the overview allows. Again, a fine book for an intermediate but not for My particular position in the process of learning timber framing. A book that is far more to My liking is called "The craft of modular post and beam." Written by James Mitchell. Way better for a beginner and a lot more incisive all the way across the learning horizon. Listening to Paul Butterfield's "East west" and am being pulled away from the typewriter! That is all!

5 out of 5 stars Must have book for the beginning and advanced.......2004-12-03

The book is well written and very easy to follow. Steve walks through the history, design considerations, math, and knowledge needed to get started. I've read lots of Timber framing books and this is the first book I grab for reference. If you are trying to decide which book to buy...Look at "A Timber Framer's Workshop" FIRST!

5 out of 5 stars A core title for any carpentry/architectural reference shelf.......2000-09-07

In A Timber Framer's Workshop: Joinery, Design & Construction Of Traditional Timber Frames is a complete instruction course under one cover in the carpentry craft and architectural art of building with timber framing technology. Included are engineering basics, builders math, tips, techniques, tools, and structural design considerations. Chapters are devoted to Bent Framing & Joinery Design, Tension Joinery, Roof Framing & Truss Design, Joinery Details, and more! A Timber Framer's Workshop is a core title for any professional, academic, or community library carpentry, architecture, and woodworking collections.

5 out of 5 stars I actually used the methods in this book to build my barn!.......2000-02-08

I actually used the methods in this book to build my 40 X 30, four-bent barn. I can't say enough about this book. From the dedication to the index this timber frame manual was crafted in the same manner as author Steve Chappell's structures: solid, precise and with artful beauty. This book teaches everything from the basic tools to advanced joinery and details everything you need to build a traditional timber frame structure. The illustrations are great and the exercises are extremely useful.

"A Timber Framer's Workshop" is an essential reference tool for anyone who's serious about timber framing.

This Book it's a good start for somebody that is beginning in the world of machinist it's clear and an easy guide to somebody that give it's first step in machinist world and also a practice guidance for experience one's.

5 out of 5 stars Loaded with good info for the money........2007-04-03

I have never used a metal lathe or mill, but I am trying to decide if I should get a small one. I am a woodworker, with a decent woodworking shop, so I'm fairly good at mechanical things. As stated early in the book, it isn't for machine shops or starting a business. It is for Home Machinists. There is good information and introductions about what the various machines and tools are, how you use them, and what types of things they can do. Good discussion on metals, as well as tempering, etc.

While I am still not sure if I am going to make the jump to getting machine tools, I certainly think the knowledge gained was worth the purchase price.

5 out of 5 stars Info for Home and apprentice machinists.......2006-06-03

Outstanding starting place for machinists with many helpful hints on setups and techniques.

4 out of 5 stars A Bit Dated But Still Relevant.......2005-10-02

If you are just playing with the idea of starting your own garage machine shop or if you are an absolute beginner this text gives you a brief overview and it does it very well. Considering the advances in design and manufacturing technologies it does show its age. A 2nd edition would help a lot that includes CAD/CAM, CNC, and other subjects found in most hobby machine shops today.

      What I liked:
The basic never change and this book gives you a good overview.
No unnecessary "This can kill you" side notes.
Cool project at the end of the book.

      What I did not like:
Reference material could be better organized and expanded.
It's a bit dated and only talks about the absolute basics.
      Too many BIG pictures.
Limited coverage of the metric system (and yes, we are using it today).

5 out of 5 stars Home Machinists Handbook.......2005-09-04

It is a very helpful book for someone who has not used a lathe since highschool (1960's). I would recommend it for anyone as a good review of practices, or for a mechanically inclined person who needs firt time instructions.

5 out of 5 stars Great companion book.......2007-06-20

In my opinion this books makes an excellent companion book to Ron Champion's book. I would have liked it to go into a bit more detail in a couple of areas, in particular front funders. It answered a number of questions I didn't even know I had. You can build one of Campion's cars without this book, but I think you'll be be glad if you buy a copy. if you buy a copy but don't have Champion's book, I'd advise you to get a copy.

Considered among the highest achievements of the American arts and crafts movement, Greene & Greene furniture was custom-built for specific interior spaces, and many of the pieces still remain in their original locations. This manual, written by a nationally recognized furniture maker, provides intermediate and advanced woodworkers with well illustrated, step-by-step instructions for classic Greene & Greene details, including ebony plugs, cloud lifts, leg indents, brackets, and pulls. A discussion of the design philosophy of the period accompanies how-to chapters, and photographs of contemporary Greene-inspired furniture provide ideas for projects. Biographical sketches are included for Charles and Henry Greene, Peter and John Hall (who built most of the furniture), and competing furniture maker Gustav Stickley.

2 out of 5 stars Not anything special.......2007-03-10

Before I bought this book, I owned another book call In Craftman's Style. It was such a great book that I thought this book was just going to be another great book. However, soon I realized that my expectation was unrealistic. First of all, this book did not offer me with any new information. Most of what it talked about in the book was already covered in the other book. The other book also offered many useful project plans. This one offered no such thing. It may seem unfair to judge one book base on another one. However, this book came out several year after In Craftman's Style repeated half of the materials. So even if I don't consider being cheated by buying this book, I was truly very disappointed at best.

5 out of 5 stars Greene & Greene Design Elements.......2007-02-16

A very good book on how the many design elements used in the manufacture of Greene & Greene furniture come together. The color illustrations and accompaning text are easy to understand and easily guide any interested woodworker or patron of this arts & crafts furniture builder. The only small comment would be - when's the next add on edition coming?

5 out of 5 stars Greene & Greene How To.......2007-02-15

An outstanding book which combines history with practical techniques for creating your own G&G style furniture. Peart is truly an outstanding craftsman and now an author/historian. Excellent photos and ideas...and some plans.

5 out of 5 stars Greene and Greene woodworking techniques.......2007-01-16

A must for the woodworker who is looking to accomplish those fine details in the Greene bros. furniture. They are easier to do once you see how it is done, a great time savins book.

5 out of 5 stars Green & Green Design Elements for the Workshop.......2007-01-12

Darrell Peart has excelled in writing a book like only a professional woodworker could. He gives a thorough history of the Green brothers and their work. Then he dives into the details that mark the Green & Green style and offers instructions on how to reproduce them. At the end he includes drawings of his fantastic Aurora furniture. This book should be in every woodworker's library.

Keith Tanner, like most of us reading this, dreamt of building his own Lotus Seven replica. He finally bought the Tamiya 1/12 scale model and once he did, there was no turning back. Keith bought a spaceframe from Champion Motorcars, and sources a wrecked Mazda Miata for parts. He then wrote a book and set up a website to chronicle his build process.

The resulting book is full of full colour photographs and insight into his project. A worthwhile book for all Lotus Seven/Caterham Seven/Replica/Kit Car enthusiasts, but bear in mind there are no drawings or plans for the spaceframe, wishbones, etc. It's more like a walkthrough of a replica build project and if you keep this in mind, it's an enjoyable read.

1 out of 5 stars Kit Car Build.......2007-05-13

I bought this book based on a review that praised the book. I already have Champion's book, which is excellent, and supposedly this book was an Americanized knock-off of that. I was under the impression it would deal with using American donor components, and what would be needed to adapt them. Nothing of the sort. The frame was bought, the body components were bought, a Mazda Miata was the donor. The book doesn't contain anything that can't be found on the web, and doesn't begin to compare with Champion's book. The title should have been something along the lines of, How I Built My KitCar. I have a small collection of automotive engineering books, but this one won't remain part of it.

      3 out of 5 stars Infectious Enthusiasm.......2007-04-11

Numerous photos help fill in the blanks of the text. Several significant technical errors typical of novice builders. Author's enthusiasm is clearly written. Decent material and would recommend to someone interested in building a Locost 7.
