not what I thought.......2007-05-09
Some nice photos, but once I looked through the book it went on the bookshelf to be forgotten
Even if you are allergic to cooking, this is a hip book.......2006-06-17
In a Japanese kitchen, form follows function, and in essence, Cool Tools is a tribute to kitchen design. Kate Klippensteen's book is more than a catalog of utensils: the featured items are handcrafted works of art. Yasuo Konishi's vivid photos highlight each piece so that the reader can feel the cool touch of the knife blades and the textures of the different graters. There are also revealing photos of old shamoji (rice servers), saibashi (cooking chopsticks) and yukihira nabe (pots) from a variety of households showing that, despite the wear and tear, these tools still have plenty of life left in them.
Klippenstein deftly guides the reader through the use of each tool, sprinkling each entry with interesting details. For example, the kogi (pestle) made from pepper trees, "which adds a hint of fragrance to the food being processed," and the ceramic clay suribachi (mortar) on which, "traditionally, the grooves... were made with pine needles."
If you're motivated to restock your kitchen arsenal, you won't want to miss "Five Basic Knives Every Household Should Stock." The indispensable shop guide and list of Japanese terms make Cool Tools the ideal companion for a trip to Kappabashi. And even if you're allergic to cooking, this handsome book will look smart on any coffee table.
An informative introductory exploration of the kitchen cookware and tools employed in the culinary aspects of Japanese culture.......2006-05-07
Superbly enhanced with full color photographs from Yasuo Konishi, Cool Tools: Cooking Utensils From The Japanese Kitchen by Kate Klippensteen is an impressively informative introductory exploration of the kitchen cookware and tools employed in the culinary aspects of Japanese culture. Presenting readers with a stunning collection of photographs and knowledgeable explanations for Japanese utensils ranging from the oni oroshi or "devil grater" (which is a useful grating tool for the daikon radish), the saibashi or cooking chopsticks, and the yanagi-ba (which is a long sashimi knife), to the yukihira-nabe (which is a hand made and highly crafted aluminum cooking pot), Cool Tools deftly details a complete selection of the beautifully shaped and functional tools of the Japanese kitchen. A welcome addition to any personal or community library reference collection, Cool Tools is enthusiastically recommended as a simply beautiful compilation of photographs and informative briefings for the many decorative particulars of the Japanese kitchen.

GREAT REFERENCE TOOL!.......2004-06-22
Anyone who has to hire film or video crews and other production personnel should consider this book. The author covers nearly every production category imaginable - so much so that it's like NAB in a book. With so many new digital and film products on the market today, this book makes it a lot easier to talk the right lingo with essential crew members and stay informed of what new and old options are available for any production budget.

Functional & Usable information.......2004-05-18
I purchased this book as a graduation gift for a friend in film school and then I bought myself a copy. I've been using it in production meetings to discuss equipment options with my crew, and I plan to add it to the list of required reading for all of my production interns.
This book really covers an incredible spectrum of production tools available to filmmakers and video users alike.

This book is full of toys that I didn't even knew existed. I was really impressed with the depth of product and information that they gathered in this book. There is some great gear in this book that I have to get. It contained things that I never would have imagined. And they will help speed up and drastically improve my next film shoot. Good find.

How to resolve a dispute - 101.......2007-09-28
A colleague handed me a copy of The Little Book of Cool Tools for Hot Topics: Group Tools to Facilitate Meetings When Things Are Hot (The Little Books of Justice and Peacebuilding). We both work in an organization, live in a community, have allegiance to a Land, and are concerned for the whole world - so conflict and disputes are all around us.
"It's a quick read, hands on, lots of useful techniques; you'll like it."
It was and I did.
Whether you are planning to lead a group through a conflicted time, or will be part of the group itself and want to learn more about taking a larger point of view - this little book is a great resource.

Book Description
One of the most exciting developments in the field of architecture and design is taking place in the today's worldclass hotels. Where once hotels strove to replicate the comfort and convenience of their guests' homes, many are now offering the ultimate in ecapism: hotels so creatively conceived guests won't want to leave their rooms. Cool Hotels is a colorful tour through the rooms, lobbies and restaurants of more than seventy-five hotels that are destinations unto themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Depends on what your looking for..........2007-06-13
This book lacks information. It has virtually none refering to the hotels, just how many rooms and adress, and that's it. If you're looking for a photo book, then it's fine. It has some interesting photos and if you're into interior design you might like it. Not very useful for hotel choosing or anything else. Also some very cool spots are missing, but you expect that in every list.
A bad copy of Hip Hotels.......2002-10-02
Sure no pretence on the copy which is non existent, but the most disappointing feature is the fact that the images are weak , and in fact in some cases supplied by the hotels; as a result the book looks certainly more like a collection of bad hotel brochures. Why pay good money for that? Not withstanding the fact that it is doubtful whether the author actually visited the hotels. Not my idea of a useful guide. Obviously it is a commercial attempt to copy Hip Hotels, but frankly not worth it. In future I will just stick to the original...
satisfying.......2002-05-30
A beautiful look at an exciting niche. It is a thematic coffee table version of cool new online services such as the great "tablethotels.com" which is much more comprehensive.

Customer Reviews:
It contains some good text, but has a bad writing style........1999-09-15
The book has information, but far too often it glosses over important points, sometimes even rudely ("I would like to help you, but I'm a forms guy.") Formatting is inconsistet. Errors are not infrequent (like the diagram showing HTTP requests as client -> CGI -> server on p50.) Bad organization left me wondering for chapters about topics introduced and left unexplored. This is not, IMO, a book for beginners to programming. And on a personal note, the title is insipid and the font unbalanced.
i rate this 4 and a half.......1999-07-03
ok i just started perl and this is my first perl book. note: its a little old(1996) k
A good book for getting started with CGI & Perl.......1997-06-24
This book succeeds in accomplishing what it sets out to do-get beginners started with Perl CGI programming. It did that for me. The writing style is folksy and easy to read. There are plenty of examples and most of the explanations are clear. I don't give it a 10 because there are a couple of drawbacks.
At times, too many new concepts are mixed together in the code examples and presented to the reader to sort out on his or her own. I think this is forgivable considering that the author was under space constraints. In the end, I was able to sort out all the examples. The other drawback is that there are a number of errors in the program listings. This problem, however, is well addressed at the book's web site (www.hytext.com/coolperl/index.html) where fixes, updates and links to other Perl resources are posted.
The web site adds a great deal of value to the book. One of its best features is the bulletin board where you can communicate with the author. He was very responsive to my questions.
No, the book isn't perfect, but yes, I recommend it.
Right idea, but..........1997-06-05
The writing style is excellent, and the level and depth of information is perfect for a neophyte programmer. But an editor! An editor! My kingdom for an editor! Or at least a good proofreader. Both the text and the code examples have errors so numerous that I finally gave up trying to document them so I could point them out to the author. Even the requisite "Hello, World!" script had an error, for crying out loud! The second edition, when all the typos get fixed, will no doubt be superb, but this one is seriously flawed. If you cannot wait, be sure to bet the errata from the book's Web Site, or you will be lost
SUMMARY: IT WON'T MAKE YOU SICK.
.......1996-12-20
I've purchased several books on CGI and PERL.
I'm *not* a programmer and Mr. Muelver's book is an
*excellent* resource for those of us suddenly thrust into
programming by way of wanting Cool Web Pages. The book is
well-written -- which means to me that it's intelligent,
packed with information, and funny -- *without* being
condescending, or worse yet, *cute*.
Not to mention the fact that it's the only CGI/PERL purchase
I made which *didn't* send me to the medicine cabinet looking
for either aspirin (to cure the headache created by techno-
horrible writing) or seltzer (to cure the nausea created
by the "We treat you like you're a three-year old" writing).
If you're going to buy only one book on CGI/PERL, make it
this one. If you're going to buy several, make this one first.
