Book Description
"Consult the genius of the place in all," Alexander Pope famously wrote, advocating gardens that are in harmony with the landscape rather than imposed upon it. Gardens in the Spirit of Place takes us on an insider's tour of some of the most beautiful examples of this philosophy, "reflective gardens" that celebrate their regional origins above all. Fourteen gardens across the United States are profiled in this stunning book, which features text by renowned garden writer Page Dickey and more than 150 sumptuous photographs by John M. Hall.
Whether it's an eastern woodland garden on Mount Desert Island, Maine, a Wisconsin farmland garden on Lake Pewaukee, or a garden planted in gravel in Palo Alto, California, each garden presented here is a sensitive and original response to its surroundings. For those who want to make their own regional gardens, the book is full of new ideas and inspiration. At a time of tremendous interest in all things local and native, this collection of gardens, formed as much by their environments as by their creators, will have enormous appeal.
Gorgeous color photography
Full of ideas for those seeking inspiration for their gardens
Locations all across the nation including Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Delaware, Virginia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Texas, California, and Washington
Features a wide variety of gardens, from farmland to desert
Customer Reviews:
mistakes are significant.......2007-09-03
The correct names of the plants and professionals under discussion do
not go out of style. This book falls short on accuracy. Yes there are pretty photos, but not enough hard information. Panicum virgatum (switchgrass) is a staple of prairie gardens. I see it every day. It does not look like this. (I wonder if it's a Calamagrostis?) If you're looking for Neil Diboll's nursery , use this spelling and Google will help you. These were just two of the simple errors I noticed. It does tend to take pleasure out of reading a book in this genre when one can't trust the
information.
Ken Druse' much earlier book, The Natural Habitat Garden, covers this same topic. The book contains beautiful photos. It's much more helpful. There is accurate, information, written in a readable style that makes the concept of a garden that fits the place come alive.
Looking and Listening to Nature: The Essence of Fine Gardens.......2007-03-07
Page Dickey is one of our finer writers and knowledgeable experts on gardening and has once again produced a book with the able assistance of nature photographer John M. Hall that becomes an instant classic. For all the beautiful garden books that fill the shelves of our bookstores and homes, few begin with the concept of making the natural setting of the space where people elect to create a garden the primary consideration.
After a beautifully written and informative foreword by Wayne Winterrowd, Dickey crosses the country, pausing in various differing locales to interview and photograph significant gardens from Maine to Massachusetts, New York, Delaware, Virginia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Texas, California, and Washington, selecting gardens that varying from arid spaces to waterways. At each of the fourteen gardens we are given background as to the types of soil, natural vegetation, moods of the area, history, and the final creative masterpiece gardens that have been created from all of this information.
The result is a beautifully designed, written, photographed and produced book that deserves a place in the libraries of everyone who loves gardening - and the environment! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, March 07
Another wonderful garden book from Page Dickey.......2005-12-01
Ms. Dickey has written wonderful garden books in the past - Breaking Ground, Inside Out and a Duck Hill Journal, to name a few. Gardens in the Spirit of Place is another winner. She has a great eye for the beautiful and idiosyncratic, and is an absolutely terrific writer. An inspiring collection of unique gardens that embody their varying surroundings.

This book is full of helpful tips from Jim Nollman's decades of gardening experience, plus the Zen of gardening--the sense of place and purpose, what tending the land means to us.

Uniquely guiding the reader through an intimate respect of "green thumb" activities.......2006-04-05
Why We Garden: Cultivating A Sense Of Place by artist, essayist, and environmental activist Jim Nollman offers an inspired and inspiring perspective as he writes about the art and ideals of gardening, including cogent observations with respect to psychological and personal reasons for gardening. Uniquely guiding the reader through an intimate respect of "green thumb" activities, Why We Garden addresses the popular and wide spread hobby of gardening with an able grasp and understanding of its therapeutic and consoling attributes, as well as its aesthetic connection developed between gardener and garden. Why We Garden is to be given high praise, and very strong recommendation reading for anyone contemplating or engaged in gardening as a recreational hobby or as a personal lifestyle.
a global spiritual mystery.......2005-07-01
Rebeccasreads highly recommends WHY WE GARDEN as an almanac of helpful tips from a Pacific Northwest gardener's decades of experience, along with musings on the "Zen of gardening", & yet it is much, much more -- it is the story of how to take inspiration from the history of the written word, & epiphanies from global cultures.
Come walk with this gardener (who, by the way, talks to whales) as he plants a treeling that will live a thousand years, & get a glimpse of TIME as you've not known it.
Come sit a while in his gardens while he shows us the "temporal charisma" of the PLACE wherein we finds ourselves.
Come wander in this gardener's wonderings as he unearths the roots of our ancient yearnings about paradise to our more recent ideals of utopia.
Month by month, Jim Nollman takes us out where the wild things grow, where spirit, mind & body come together in the most enduring of our "pastimes" -- digging up healing, planting hope & harvesting contentment.
WHY WE GARDEN is a mystery -- no matter where we do it -- atop highrises, in window boxes, on city blocks, or where the trees outnumber the houses -- wherever we garden, that is where we dig up our souls & nurture our own unfurling.
Much to learn, relish, think on -- all year long, for the rest of our lives. WHY WE GARDEN is the perfect gift for your gardening friends.
Not just for gardeners.......2001-06-08
This is a great book. Not about gardening, but about living on this Earth. Nollman uses his very individual garden to highlight his universal points about organic farming and local ecology. He makes me think about my own plot of land and what it could possibly mean to me. He isn't a perfect human preaching about the perfect way to grow a garden. He shares his process of understanding his own garden as well as the development of his ethics about gardening and tries to tie down some very big ideas about this planet we call home. A worthy read for anyone, not just gardeners, who are up to facing the reality of caring for the planet and ourselves.
On becoming a gardener.......2000-03-25
I am reviewing this book because I read it and it's one of my all time favorites. I'm a fairly successful gardener. People stop on my street and admire my flowers. Many friends and acquaintances ask for advice. I wish I had written this book, it says what I want to say. Learning to garden is a process of bringing forth what already exists inside you. One learns to garden through trial and error, and what works in one garden may not work in another. Cookie cutter directions simply don't work, and when one follows them and fails, one feels like a failure. Nollman writes about gardening in his part of the world, which is not like your part of the world or my part of the world, but the thoughts he shares transcend these differences. There are two major approaches to gardening: one organic--spiritual and esthetic; the other nonorganic and ugly. To be content, Nollman says, all you need is love and an organic garden. Nothing works if you work against nature (probably the reason our forebears were thrown out of Eden). WHY WE GARDEN helped me maintain the link between the inner gardener I was born to be and Gaia.

This was a fun book to read on a plane. Lots of short informative stories. I use to live in NJ. but didn't know half of the history that are mingled into each tale.
WONDERFUL BOOK OF NEW JERSEY GHOSTS AND LEGENDS.......2006-07-07
Continuing Stackpole Books' outstanding series on regional hauntings comes "Haunted New Jersey", 120 pages of hauntings, monsters, and other strange goings on in the Garden State. With some 70 plus tales they are only a page or two in length and designed to show off as many of the legends of New Jersey as possible and again, it succeeds! The book is arranged by geographical region and filled with fantastic lore.
For instance there is the former Governor's mansion on Perth Amboy where Governor William Franklin resided. Franklin was the son of one of America's greatest Statesmen and founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin. But when the Revolution started, William refused to join and maintained his loyalty to England despite repeated pleas from his father. William would be exiled to England where he would die lonely and in shame. His ghost is said to yet occupy the mansion, ever regretting his fateful decision.
Then there is the story of Antoine LeBlanc who killed three people in 1833. Was later captured and hung. His body was given to a local surgeon for dissection. LeBlanc's skin was removed and tanned and used to make various objects. One purse still exists at the New Jersey Historical Society. This was also seen in an episode of the Travel Channels "Weird Travels". LeBlanc's ghost is said to haunt the area of Morristown, looking for these objects.
While many people think of Salem or even Connecticut when you talk about witchcraft in early America, New Jersey also had its suspected witches including Elizabeth Garlick who was put on trial but later set free and moved with her husband and child to the small town of Rio Grande. No burial plot has ever been found for her but around Halloween its said a strange mist swirls around the grave of her daughter. There is also an account of the less well-known witchcraft trials that took place in New Jersey in 1730.
The ghosts of former Vice President and suspected traitorAaron Burr and his father, also named Aaron are said to haunt the cemetery and regions around Princeton University.
Of course you can't talk about the weird in New Jersey without talking about its most famous monster, The Jersey Devil. This creature has been haunting the Pine Barrens area for almost 150 years and has been the subject of numerous segments on TV shows dealing with strange phenomena as well as a feature motion picture.
The book also provides information on ghost tours in New Jersey and websites you can visit that specialize in the research of the strange in Jersey. Yet another great addition to Stackpole's series of books on hauntings!

Haunted New Jersey: Ghosts and Strange Phenomena of the Garden State.......2005-08-30
The format of this book is unappealing. The font is small and the top and bottom margins are set for less than six inches, giving the appearance of very wordy pages. The book relates ghost stories in a verbose fashion, each story could be told in less than a page.
Book Description

HISTORICAL HAUNTINGS ON THE JERSEY SHORE.......2006-07-15
As a follow up to his outstanding "Haunted New Jersey", author Charles A Stansfield is back with some 80 more tales of ghosts and monsters of New Jersey, this time centering on the area in and around the Jersey shore. Stansfield begins with a history of the area and some of its earliest explorers, dating back to the 1500's. The Jersey Shore would become a haven for many pirates and smugglers over the years, visited frequently by no less than the pirate legend Captain Kidd. In fact its said that the ghosts of Kidd's old crew still haunt the area of Barnegat Bayshore looking for the Captain's hidden treasure.
While the legends of Jersey's ghosts and monsters are many, I am struck by the historical significance of so many of these legends. For example, it's said that the ghost of President Garfield still walks along Ocean Ave. at Long Branch where he attempted to convalesce after being shot.
At Monmouth University, the library was formerly the stately mansion of the wealthy Guggenheim family. Each night at midnight, a white gowned woman descends the grand stairway and disappears once she reaches the bottom.
Tourists recently visiting the Monmouth Battlefield State park were treated to a park employee dressed as the legendary Molly Pitcher who brought water to American troops during the famous battle on June 28, 1778 in sweltering 96 degree heat. When the tourists complimented the park's management on the find actor playing Molly, they were politely told the park did not have an actor dressed as Molly Pitcher!
New Jersey had its own Paul Revere in the form of Nathaniel Cowperthwaite. The ghost of Cowperthwaite is said to still run along the banks of the Mullica River, going to warn American outposts about the advancing British troops.
Yet another historical figure from the Revolutionary period that haunts the area is the ghost of former General Charles Lee, once second in command to George Washington himself. Lee was court-martialed in 1778 for retreating from British troops when he was ordered to attack. His spirit refuses to rest on American soil.
And then there is Jimmy Hoffa, one of the truly great mysteries of the 20th century. The legend here is the oft-told one that he is buried beneath Giants Stadium. I don't think we will ever truly know what happened to the former Teamster boss. Just this spring, agents of the FBI dug up the area under a rural Milford, MI barn on tips Hoffa was buried there.
This book is an excellent complement to Stansfied's earlier book and the pair are a perfect team.

Although this book does not contain in-depth stories, it is an excellent New Jersey ghost guide. There are black and white photos of most of the haunted sites, addresses are provided, and the condensed descriptions of each haunting leaves one with a desire to learn more. I particularly liked the chapter on Cape May's haunted inns.

For many gardeners, gardening is a moving meditation that brings peace and deep relaxation. At times, however, repetitive chores can feel more stressful than soothing. The authors of The Sanctuary Garden remind us that being in the garden (as opposed to active gardening) is a way to honor the intrinsic relatedness of people and plants. To help us get beyond our busyness, they identify seven key design elements that can turn a garden into a living retreat or sanctuary. A special entrance marks our departure from the mundane world. Water, the symbol of life, brings flow and reflection to the garden. The thoughtful use of color and the play of light can be contrived to deliberately evoke emotions--peace, comfort, awe, and respect. Natural features like sculptural rocks, wind song, and fragrance can become focal points for our attention. Artwork that supports the desired feelings can be integrated into our plantings. Finally, we can create attractive habitat for birds, pollinators, and animals. Sharing the garden with nature--not just plants--broadens our sense of connectedness to the natural world in a wholesome, healing way. The book creates a challenge: where is your sanctuary? Answering that may expand both your garden and your spirit. --Ann Lovejoy
Book Description
Use the power of nature to find peace in your own backyard and enrich your life.
A garden can be far more than a place to plant a row of zinnias or tomatoes -- it can be a place of sanctuary. With the help of The Sanctuary Garden you can make your own yard or garden a place of serenity, peacefulness, and beauty. No matter how large or small your garden is, it can provide a sense of safety and comfort. And through a deep relationship with nature based on intention, reflection, and contemplation, each of us can gather strength, and our spirits may be renewed.
Ask most gardeners what gardening is and they are likely to tell you that it is primarily about plants -- which ones to select, grow, propagate, and nurture. But as you will discover in this book, the seven design elements of a sanctuary garden speak less about vegetation than they do about other often overlooked considerations such as:
- Creating a special entrance that invites the visitor into a sense of sanctuary
- Effectively using water for its psychological, spiritual, and physical effects
- Creatively using color and lighting to elicit emotion, comfort, and awe in the visitor
- Creating sitting areas that enfold the visitor into the sanctuary experience by providing a place of rest for body and soul
- Highlighting natural features as anchor points, including the use of rocks, wood, natural fences, screens, trellises, wind, and sound to evoke emotion
- Integrating art that enhances the overall mood
- Providing habitat and features to attract a diversity of wildlife to share your sanctuary
Illustrated with eight radiant full-page watercolors and hand-drawn illustrations, The Sanctuary Garden: Creating a Place of Refuge in Your Yard or Garden offers a unique guide to living your life and designing your garden with purpose, contemplation, and, above all, harmony.

Don't buy this book if you're looking for sample ideas.......2002-09-01
I bought this book from a different web retailer because of the online description; I did not see it in the store first. If I had, I wouldn't have bought it, because it is a philosophy book about gardening. I tend to buy gardening books that have lots of photos or diagrams of examples. This book has no photos and only a few drawings. It is all text. If you are a "show me" kind of person like I am, then don't buy this book.
Inspiring, Enjoyable Reading & Application!.......2000-04-25
I LOVE this book. It's about so MUCH more than just digging in the dirt! I especially love the watercolor illustrations. We have always called our own backyard a sanctuary. Now, we are incorporating some of the bountiful ideas found in this cornucopia of garden delights.
A wonderful sense of the art of creating "peace" around us!.......1999-07-20
This is a wonderful book! It is very inspiring, and the ideas are easy to follow, understand, and adapt to your own space and needs. I loved the descriptions of their garden/sanctuary at their home, and am inspired to try to create some sacred space in my own life. Thank you for a truly fantastic book!
This is a unique, deeply spiritual, inspired work........1999-06-04
Almost a "garden as metaphor," book, you won't find concrete advide about how to plant, or what to do about pests, etc. You will find an inspired pathway to spirit via the garden. The authors write with a clear, poetic voice about earth, wind, water and sunlight as manifestations of the soul. As an avid gardener, this is one of my all time favorites! It would make a terrific gift for anyone interested in the natural/spiritual worlds.
