Book Description

With some corn syrup, drink mix powder and water, you can make a splendid concoction of stage blood—without spending an arm and a leg. From budget-friendly frights to sophisticated props, this book offers dozens of imaginative ways to haunt a house for Halloween. Readers will find generously illustrated step-by-step instructions for creating a barbecued skull, devil eyes, bonehead tableware, a magic bottle, a glowing brain and other projects. The book details ways to enhance an eerie ambiance with effects like blacklights and music. Props use many common household items and tools. Where specialty items are required, the author tells where they can be found at a reasonable cost. Projects take anywhere from a few hours to several days to complete.

The chapters ooze with tips on topics like creating apprehension and surprise, using design to guide guests, creatively using plastic skulls, and making papier-mâché masks and molded hands. There are recipes for fake blood and vomit and ideas for using them, and other creative and adaptable ideas. Appendices include "Merry Halloween," which advises, "One of the best times to look for bargains on Halloween prop-building materials is right after Christmas"; an alphabetical listing of props and supplies and where they can be found; a list of specialty suppliers; and an "epitaph" inviting comments.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas, but not what I expected..........2007-07-19

The projects are explained well, the directions are clear, and I feel I would be able to re-create the clever props. Unfortunately there are no instructions for large sized props such as figures, monsters, etc. that are expected in a haunted hosue. All the props are on a small scale..at least half the book is devoted to creating different painting effects on skulls. There are also ideas for masks, brains, severed hands, and other small props such as skull flowers, flatware, salt & pepper shakers, candy dish, etc.
There is useful information on lighting, black lights, adding eyes to a prop, and general setting up of a scene which will help me with my haunted house decorating, but I won't use most of the other projects.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC HALLOWEEN PROJECTS.......2007-02-11

When I was a kid growing up in the 70's, Halloween decorations pretty much consisted of those cardboard characters you taped on your windows and light up jack-o-lanterns. Heck the main decoration was the pumpkin you carved yourself. Today, Halloween decorations generate millions each year. There are entire superstores selling nothing but Halloween décor and costumes that spring up every Fall. The Fright Catalog has Hollywood-caliber props that cost in the thousands of dollars. It's easily become the biggest holiday for decorating next to Christmas and getting bigger every year.

The Hollywood Propmaker's handbook is the perfect book for those who love decorating for the season but who don't want to spend all of their hard-earned cash at those stores. The book is written by Keith Pitek whose work has been seen in Haunted Attraction Magazine. Pitek presents some two-dozen projects that can be made with inexpensive items, many of which you might have lying around the house.

Pitek begins by covering various techniques to setting up your outdoor display covering things which seem so simple and make perfect sense such as where to set-up speakers for sound, the best ways to display props, the use of remote controls, and lighting. Pitek also covers the use of black lights, techniques for painting skulls, wiring your props for light, and using two-way mirrors.

In the project section, Pitek provides several different types of skulls using inexpensive plastic skull props that are available at the Halloween stores as well as major retailers. Create one with light up twinkling eyes that doesn't take an electrician to wire; paint one so that it looks like it was just dug up out of a grave. The painting uses common household ingredients such as shoe polish or wood varnish. It's really all in the technique! Perhaps the most ambitious is the barbecued skull, which when finished, will look like it was just retrieved out of an incinerator.

One of my favorite projects, again one which is quite detailed, is the partially eaten hand made with a hand shaped gelatin mold and several other items. Done right, it creates a stunningly realistic looking prop. Pitek also provides a sure-fire recipe for stage blood that can be made with corn syrup and red-colored Kool-Aid. Pitek concludes with a detailed reference section informing readers where the items used in the props can be purchased as well as providing the phone numbers and websites to many different suppliers.

Now, these items are not your average weekend craft projects. Some are quite easy and can be made in an hour. Others are very involved and take many hours, or even days to finish, but the results will be worth it.

Halloween Propmaker's Handbook arrived too late for October mention but deserves ongoing recommendation for any avid party crafts person who enjoys putting together unique Halloween props. Here are recipes for fake blood, papier-maiche projects such as skills, two-way mirrors, and other techniques just perfect for Halloween decorators. No color photos, but the step-by-step black and white images and clear directions need little color to prove involving.

It has so much fun info in it, recipes, costume ideas, decor and invite ideas... EVERYTHING! Buy one for yourself and one for your crazy friend!

5 out of 5 stars MAYBE THE BEST BOOK ON HALLOWEEN!.......2005-08-26

There's only one thing that keeps "A Halloween How-To" from being the perfect Halloween book and that is that there are no color photographs. That one little drawback aside, this is maybe the best book on Halloween I've ever seen and I've reviewed a LOT of them. Unlike some of the more cutesy-crafty books on the market, this book is more designed for the real Halloween aficionado. This is the person whose more interested in scaring the pants off trick or treaters rather than winning an award from the neighborhood garden committee.

The first chapter covers tips on decorating your hose and yard and range from the simple to the very elaborate. Fake Tombstones can be pretty expensive if you buy them in the stores but this book shows how you can make them inexpensively from builder's foam and some paint. Another quick project is the quarter (or more) of dancing lawn ghosts made with old bed sheets stuffed with plastic bags on wooden dowel rods and then arranged in a circle. More elaborate projects can be made by a concoction called Monster Mud, which can be used to mold creatures from. Tips on proper lighting for your outdoor display are included as well. The second chapter covers everything you need to know about choosing, carving, and preserving your pumpkin. A great trip is rubbing it with petroleum jelly or vegetable oil after you carve it to keep it from drying out too fast.

Chapter three deals with costumes and make-up, and features designs for fifty different homemade costumes, and patterns for making things like capes and hooded robes. Beyond that it provides techniques for spattering blood on clothing or giving your clothing an aged, rotted look. There are also recipes for making your own costume blood from corn syrup and red food coloring.

Parties are covered in chapter four and these are squarely aimed at adults with various themed parties such as gothic or Victorian theme. Ideas for décor, invitations, recipes and games are included along suggested Halloween readings from such classic writers as Poe and Ambrose Bierce. They even tell you how to hold your own séance! Chapter five is a nice accompaniment with its suggestions for music, sound effects and the best scary films to watch on Halloween. One of my favorites is "The Lady in Whites". Chapter six follows up with dozens of recipes.

The longest chapter in the book and my personal favorite is the one on Haunted Destinations. The author takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of some of the best and creepiest destinations to visit during the Halloween season. The witch-haunted town of Salem, MA, has their three week long Haunted Happenings that begins the second week of October with various parades, parties, candlelight tours of haunted sites throughout the region. Take a trip to Sleepy Hollow in New York for their annual Halloween festivities or down to New Orleans to visit the Voodoo museum or the famous cemetery crypts. Other destinations include tours of the Edgar Allan Poe gravesite in Baltimore, the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast in Fall River, Bachelor's Grove Cemetery outside of Chicago, and many other ghostly sites. The book also lists some of the more famous seasonal Halloween attractions like haunted houses and hayride out on by various cities throughout the country.

The book concludes by taking a look at some of the more infamous Halloween myths and current trends of the Halloween holiday. This book just has a wealth of information and is the most comprehensive I've ever read. It's a true celebration of the Halloween season.

Tangerine Orange. Shocking Pink. Azure Blue. These are just a few of the colors offered in Color Healing Home. For those of you who love modern interior design but would like something other than beige and variations on white, then this is THE book for you. The book is divided by color and each color is showcased in beautiful modern rooms. Worth its weight in gold!! A+++++++++

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Inspiring.......2001-09-01

I really like this book. The photos are beautiful. The author discusses what effect different colors have on your mood, i.e. paint your bedroom deep blue for restful sleep, red can cause exhaustion if it's not used sparingly, magenta-pink encourages introspection, etc. This book gives you lots of interesting ideas for adding color to your home, beyond just slapping paint on a wall.

5 out of 5 stars a fun book.......2001-03-29

This is one of my all-time favorite books ... and I have a HUGE collection of books on color and decorating. Whenever I look through these pages, I want to do my rooms in every color I see, loving each page more than the next. If you ask me which was my favorite color, I will say, "All of them!" But then, my passion for color is the reason I bought this book in the first place. As soon as I opened it, I had to have it.

The book is broken down according to the colors of the spectrum and the color therapy use of each color (i.e., there are sections for "energizing," "uplifting," "balancing," "refreshing," "calming," "meditative," "romantic," and "grounded"). Each individual color has two or three photos. But this book doesn't just separate the colors as simply as red, orange, yellow, etc. It elaborates by breaking each color down into numerous shades and tones of that color. For the violet part of the spectrum alone -- which is classified as "meditative" in terms of color therapy purposes -- there are pages for the shades "very violet," "deep purple," "mood indigo," "fresh lavender," "lilac time," and "purple haze." Each has several photos.

Throughout the book, there are pages (and photos) for such luscious colors as "sunflower," "aquamarine," "fruit pastels," "sugar candy" ... and there are natural/neutral colors represented as well.

Just looking through this book cheers me up and inspires me. It is intelligently written as well. I highly recommend Color Healing Home to anyone who would like to bring more color and joy into their life.

    5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS WRITER!.......2005-08-05

This book is hysterical! This author is so talented...not only does he write the book (and the ideas are tremendous), but he also illustrated the whole thing (and the pictures are little black and white cartoons that make you laugh out loud!). I would recommend this book to not only Halloween fans like myself (and such great ideas inside this book if you love to have fun with scaring the wits out of the older kids...no small ones, could be a father waiting in the wings), but to people who want a good laugh and some great ideas.
    Wonderful book - A+!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book, But Not What I Expected.......2003-04-10

I was looking for ideas for scary decorations, which is not really what this book is about, although it is well written and the cartoon drawings are great.
If you're looking for scary tricks to perform, this book has Halloween gags which would be good for a family or group to do together, to scare Trick Or Treaters or haunted house guests.
But if you're planning a Halloween party, and you want to socialize and actually be part of the party, this is probably not the book for you. Most of the ideas in this book must be repeated every time someone new arrives. They require you to play an active role in the scare, either in costume or behind the scenes, and many require two people.

    NEW IN PAPERBACK

"...showcases dozens of rooms with an aged patina and English panache. A rustic bedroom with pine walls benefits from handmade quilts and an abundance of lace. Even better are the holiday vignettes. The book's central lesson: More is more."--Dallas Morning News

Timeless grace and charm: that's the hallmark of the Victorian style, with its exquisite lacework, fine china, pretty keepsakes, and loving attention to detail. Recreate that era in your own home and watch every room turn into a luxurious retreat, glowing with femininity and warmth. Splendid photographs on each page present so many entrancing ideas to choose from: a table runner makes an elegant window valance, a worn table looks well-dressed in linens and laces, and treasured items present their best face to the world in one of these perfect displays. And don't forget the new: just-bought trinkets and glassware become more alluring when placed side by side with antiques and heirlooms. 3 out of 5 stars Lovely Photos, but short on projects.......2005-05-29

This is a lovely book to look at and is mainly a decorating book. The photos are very nice, but they tend to repeat....after all-how many different camera angle views do you need of a tablescape?
If you're looking for projects to make, skip this book. There aren't that many.

1 out of 5 stars Victorian Chic is Shabby.......2004-07-25

This is the book for those who believe that Victorian style is described best in the Shabby Chic manner. If white is your color and if Victorian means old lace, roses, vintage pottery, tarnished silverplate, and quilts, you will love this book. Personally, I like my Victorian more in the stle of the Grand Epoch. Give me rich jewel tones, heavy furniture, a plethora of good silver, beautiful china, heavy draperies and everything over the top. If you agree with my taste, I fear you will find this book insipid and worse. Yet, as the French say, Vive le difference!

4 out of 5 stars Victorian Chic is Victorian but not Very Chic.......2003-07-24

The book showed mostly a display of lace and linens, layered and arranged everywhere.
The bedroom seemed the best place to carry out this scheme of
antique linens and numerous laces. The living rooms were a bit
overdone, especially having lace doilies on the backs of furni-
ture. In Victorian times, it was a means of protecting or
keeping your chairs clean from hair oils.In our modern times
it looks absurd with our daily regimen of a shampoo and
    shower.
The Christmas decorating was superb. It makes you yearn for
thr days before noisy toys with batteries and all the glitz
    Christmas has become.
Another part at the end, the outdoor Victorian scenes made
a serene picture at the end of a long day.To sit and reflect
and enjoy the wildflowers around a porch made more pleasant
by the comfortable seating, was carefully accomplished.
I gave this a four star because in parts the rooms were
overblown. However, there are many artistic arrangements of a
teapot collection and floral arrangments that reflect the
    author's talent.

    5 out of 5 stars A Delight.......2001-12-03

Victorian Chic was a delightful revelation of a guide. Characteristic of the lace and linen era, I discovered new and clever ways to display my treasures. I'm inspired to add to my collections knowing how to blend them into our home decor. Ms. Crane makes it all look so easy.

    5 out of 5 stars Victorian Chic, A "Must-Have".......2001-11-29

Victorian Chic is a "must-have" for collectors like me wondering what to do with odds-and-ends. Every time I browse the pages of Anita Crane's book, I get new ideas. Especially exciting is the concept of mixing and matching items from different eras in order to achieve a mood.

No longer are my closets filled with boxes of garage-sale finds. Using many of Anita's suggestions, my bargain "treasures" are now placed where they can be seen and enjoyed. Perhaps even more important, Anita's book serves as a springboard for my own ideas, encouraging me to explore with confidence new possibilities for old pieces. I can see a teapot as a vase, an empty frame as a work of art, a piece of antique lace as an elegant runner. With the masterful eye of an artist, Anita transforms her world to a gentle era of lace and primitives, soft lights and flowers. Victorian Chic invites us to enjoy it with her, and to create our own worlds using the treasures around us.
