5 out of 5 stars Best for new weavers.......2007-02-24

This book is a excellent teaching tool for beginner weavers and a solid resource for experienced weavers. I highly recommend it (and so does the expert weaver who is teaching me).

5 out of 5 stars Learning to Weave by Deborah Chandler.......2007-02-13

Deborah Chandler is a great teacher and it shows in her writing of this book. If I was to buy only 1 book on beginning handweaving with a floor loom THIS book would be the one!

5 out of 5 stars great purchase.......2007-02-11

This book was very helpful and in great condition. A great purchase!

5 out of 5 stars excellent for self teaching.......2007-02-10

I bought this book on the recommendation of a weaving friend. I taught myself using the book. I highly recommend it. I knew little or nothing about weaving before I started, and I have "warped a loom" twice using it. There were almost no questions I had that weren't answered in the book, and the authors style is reassuring and comfortable.

5 out of 5 stars A Book for all Weavers - from Beginners to Old Pro's .......2007-01-03

Even if you've never woven before, this book explains every aspect of weaving in such a clear and friendly way that you'll have the confidence you need to get started, even on your own. The author breaks down every step from project planning and warping, to reading weaving drafts with clear explanations, drawings and photos. Even for experienced weavers it is an excellent resource book with a reed substitution chart, sett chart and troubleshooting chart listing problems with possible causes and solutions. This is the book that all of my beginning weaving students use and actually enjoy reading.

    Book Description

This intriguing book examines the small woven and wrought works artist Sheila Hicks has produced for the past fifty years. With their distinctive colors, thoughtful compositions, and narrative, these miniature creations reveal the emergence and continuity of the artist’s approach to her work. Internationally recognized for her mastery of a textile vocabulary of extremely different scales—sculpture, tapestry, site specific commissions for public spaces, environments of recuperated clothing and uniforms, and more—Hicks has thoughtfully crafted miniatures throughout her nomadic career. The palm-sized works present a record of her remarkable and personal journeys.
Focusing on some one hundred miniatures from public and private collections, the book demonstrates the breadth of Hicks's concerns: her persistent inquiry into the mysteries of color, her playful yet reverential subversions of weaving traditions, her surprising range of materials, and her exploration of new technology. From initial experiments based on pre-Columbian weaving structures to a 2005 sculptural project using ninety colors of synthetic filaments, these small works offer a unique opportunity to access and examine the artist's conceptual and technical forays. The volume includes informative essays by Arthur C. Danto, Joan Simon, and Nina Stritzler-Levine as well as illustrations of the artist’s working tools, related drawings, photographs, and chronology.

      Book Description

Shawls are currently making a huge comeback in the fashion world, but many people do not realize that the shawl has been worn for many centuries and in many cultures. This collection of patterns and traditions features shawls from around the world. From the Himalayas to Spain, from Iceland to Japan, and from Mexico to Norway, many of the shawls featured here have been taken from examples of historic knitted shawls. Other designs have been translated into knitwear from patterns for woven or lace shawls. Included are 25 patterns as well as historical and cultural information about shawls that have been used for prayer and mourning, as bridal veils, and as christening garments. Each design is presented with a full-page color photo, written instructions, and charts.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Shawls.......2007-08-25

The Folk Shawls is interesting and informative with information about shawl styles from different cultures. The patterns are clear and easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars I love the historical background stories, and the knitting.......2007-05-04

I love the little ethnic/historical stories that go with each shawl. And that there are shawls from all over the world. These are the practical shawls that women can really use, not just museum pieces that will be used once for a special ocassion, wrapped in tissue and put away somewhere. The directions are clear and the drawings are great.
And, I liked seeing each shawl on the author. Seeing each one on the same person gives a sense of size and scale that you don't usually get from knitting books.

5 out of 5 stars Nice practical book.......2007-05-02

This is a nice little book of shawl patterns. Although it lacks the sophistication of Victorian Lace Today and A Gathering of Lace with respect to elaborate lace patterns in the light weight lace yarns, it does present a collection of simple, utilitarian patterns in basic worsted weight yarns.

This is a good place for a beginning to intermediate knitter to start learning lace stitches and their effects. Furthermore the patterns provide immediate, attractive fabrics that serve a useful purpose. Although I didn't care much for the style of the Ruanna, it would easily "dress up" with the stitch design and color way for the Robozo in the same section. The Japanese Kimono shawl is a very nice leaf style stitch, which makes a lovely wrap and and allows the newcomer to lace patterns to gain a lot of practice without being overwhelmed by the number of non-repeating rows in a single design or the variety of patterns in combined design. The Aran pocket shawl is very clever, and would be easy for a new knitter to get started.

The photos are very nice, and while the ambiance of the background is not as impressive as the above books, the patterns themselves are well illustrated.

      5 out of 5 stars I have to order a second copy!.......2007-03-25

This book is fantastic. I'd like to make everyone of the shawls. So far I've made one, and started one some time ago from the pre issued pattern with mistakes. Now I've just cast on two more and since I'm traveling it has to go in my suitcase and I'll probably gift it to a knitting friend out in Indonesia. So I have to order a second copy! The shawls use lots of different weights of yarns and the patterns are beautiful and not difficult and the geographical background of the shawls makes it more interesting. I'd love to see her write a second book on shawls.

      5 out of 5 stars Wow what a book!.......2007-03-15

Any knitter will be pleased with this book of shawls, there are shawls for everyone's taste. It's a good idea to know your yarn weights well with working with this book for it calls for different weights. Lovely patterns worth making more then once.

3 out of 5 stars 200 braids to twist, knot, loop or weave.......2007-10-10

A book with lots of ideas and clear instructions. However, I would have been happier if they had shown more applications for the various braids as well as instructions on how to apply the braids. Overall I am happy I made the purchase and will use the book for finishing needlepoint projects.

5 out of 5 stars embellish with pazzazz.......2007-09-15

jacqui carey has produced another first-rate instruction manual. the selection of techniques brings together methods from weaving as well as braiding and knotting, so nearly every crafter will find something new to them. there are even instructions for using a lucet, not the most common textile tool. there is a very brief section on basic tassel making, enough to provide a finishing element for the braids.

the book is beautifully organized. the instructions are clear and thoroughly illustrated. as always, carey includes the construction details that make the process easier and that result in professional quality work.

the best part of the book is carey's incredible inventiveness. even with the simplest technique, her combinations of texture, weight, and color create lovely, striking and elegant results.

the braids could be used by anyone involved with textiles--embellish clothing, hats, purses, make belts; decorate pillows, upholstery and curtains. use them as jewelry. the quick ones could be used to tie presents for stylish presentation. endless possiblities.

carey is english, so many of the terms for yarn might not be familiar to american readers. but the photos are very clear, so finding equivalents would not be a problem.

      a really useful, inspiring resource.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations, great instructions.......2007-09-11

This book has detailed instructions with color photographs of pretty much every step. The Braid and Trim Selector has clear, crisp, colorful, actual size photos of the various braids and trims covered in the book. And they are really beautiful. My only problem with the book is that it is in a rather small format (7.8X6.6x1 inches) and has correspondingly rather small print. I might prefer to photocopy pages and enlarge the size if I'm trying to follow the instructions for a particular item. I'm glad I bought this book and I look forward to trying many of these gorgeous trims. This really is a magnificent book.

      5 out of 5 stars Cool Braids.......2007-09-09

I LOVED this book!! The pictures are so pretty and clear. The written directions were easy to follow. I really appreciated the organization of this book. She showed the variations of a given braid using different cords. Not only did I make several of the braids in the book, it inspired me to create some 'original' pieces. Jacqui Carey does a beautiful job with all of her books.

5 out of 5 stars Bag Knitters - consider this!.......2007-07-21

Purse and bag knitters are in for a treat if they haven't yet tried braided handles and ties. There are some here with beading, some with added ribbons and cords, and some that build on the basic yarn braiding technique that most knitters use. If you are looking for something beyond I-cord and purchased leather handles to complement the bags you design, you will be really inspired by this technique - and this book is a great one to start with!

1 out of 5 stars Error Ridden .......2007-05-08

I used this text book in a class on HTML and Java Script. It was too riddled with errors to recommend as a good text book on programming. Previous classes have documented over a hundred errors in the text, and code samples; some minor, and some major. There are much better guides to programming than this book.
You may save money buying just this one book , but I did not find it money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Its pretty good.......2006-03-20

This book isn't horrible. The guy above obviously is an ex-lover of the author and is none to happy. The book has excellent examples and walks through the basics of HTML, JavaScript, JAVA, and perl. After you have learned the languages it is awesome for using as a reference and refresher.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book.......2005-10-13

An absolutely amazing resource!! I took an html class, and this was the book that got me through it. The examples are interesting and clever. She's also very friendly if you ever try to e-mail her with questions.

      2 out of 5 stars From a former student.......2003-07-16

I'm a former student of Dr. Anderson-Freed and I am currently a professional web developer. I have seen this book in two classes on web programming, the first time in a draft form and the second time in its current form. Having seen the errors and typos in the draft, and having pointed them out during class, I had hoped that the final print of the book would contain at least some of the corrections. Unfortunately, as another reviewer has pointed out, the book still contains numerous errors, typos, and just plain incorrect programming.

I still own a copy of her book because I have penned in corrections to many of the errors in the book. It covers a little bit of everything, and the little bit of reference I need for Perl and Java are met by this book and web references. However, I also currently own and recommend the HTML 4 Bible and JavaScript Bible, both published by IDG Books. I would recommend the Bible series of computer books over Dr. Anderson-Freed's book to anyone who requires a web-related programming reference. The same goes for IWU students who are taking her classes: don't buy this book. While her book contains many examples (many of which she uses in class), a good portion of her examples have code that does not produce the desired results. You would be better off reading another text and recreating the examples on your own.

This book is clearly written, has great pictures - I can't wait to warp up a new twill project.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I bought this years ago!.......2007-01-15

I've been weaving on and off for more than 12 years, without really getting "caught" by weaving fever. Until I got this book. Now I really understand so much more than I did before and have been weaving regularly. It is well written with great illustrations and pictures. There is enough information here that you could weave nothing but twills and be busy for years. It gave me a whole new appreciation of twills, rather than thinking it was pretty much a "starter" weave pattern. I would recommend this book to every weaver I know.

      5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book.......2006-07-19

There are lots of beautiful things to make and good explanations of twill from simple to complex ones. (Full disclosure) I haven't had a chance to actually weave any of them yet. My fingers are itching to get those threads on the loom, but more urgent matters pull me away.

        5 out of 5 stars BOOK(S) WITH A WONDERFUL PURPOSE........2007-04-13

THis work, Volume II, is like the others. A wonderful history of how it was. In this day and age of having most needs meet and something for everyone on the Wal-mart shelf, we tend to forget just what it was like in our not too distant past. These books, the Foxfire books, brings to light skills, attitudes and a way of life that is all but forgotten. This is a good thing. When a people lose their history, they lose part of their soul. As the title of this work states, Ghost Stories, Wild Plant Foods, Spinning, Weaving, Midwifing, Corn Shucking, and there is so much more. The editors have done a wonderful job. They have made a very honest effort to replicate the dialect of those places and times and I feel that this is a big part of the charm of these books. I am old enough to have known many of the kinds of folks featured in these books, being only one generation past them, and have a great appreciation for what and how they did all the little things we take so for granted now. I might also suggest that you actually try some of the things mentioned in these volumes. It will give you even more of an appreciation for what they did, and hey, who knows, the skill you develope just might come in handy one of these days! Recommend this and the other Foxfire books highly.

5 out of 5 stars Survival Guide for Hardy Individuals.......2007-03-28

Have enjoyed all the Foxfire Books for years. They are a wonderful peek into the lives of hardy people who survived without a single benefit from the U.S.Government.........and were proud of it.

        1 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-03-15

I bought this book for my husband and he loves it! There are so many interesting facts in these books. I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in how things were back in the "old" days. Everyone, no matter how young or old, will learn something from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Foxfire books are excellent.......2003-07-29

Years ago we owned all the Foxfire books, and then we donated them to the library so others could glean the wisdom they had, and we have slowly begun to but copies for our home library and this is one that I wanted first. Simply because it had information on burial customs and I make plain pine burial boxes. And because it has excellent information on wild plants that are edible in the spring and we love to forage for wild plants for food like stinging nettle, fiddle fern and dandelion. The section on bee keeping is also informative. Then there is the wonderful section on midwives which is of personal interest to me, as well as the wonderful section on how to wash clothes in an iron pot, because being vagbond-homestead-mountain mode people we like good clean clothes washed in an environmentally sound manner using the least amount of soap possible.

The Foxfire series is one that comes up on various simple living, homestead, frugal websites and web boards. So I know that millions of people have over the years found the series of books to be invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars I love the series of these books.......1999-09-13

The series of Foxfire books takes you back in time when life was hard physically but simplier mentally. While reading these books I fell like I am in a time capsule being transported back in time ninety or so years. I enjoy past history and anything to do with mountain country around the Smokies. These peope lived off the land and took the time to enjoy life and their families. These books provide tips for things that are still done the same way, such as tanning hides. Norma Doyle, Florida
