Customer Reviews:
Attractive but may be full of mistakes.......2007-09-20
I picked up a copy of this book in a physical book store to take a quick look through. I was very tempted but I found at least one critical error. The picture of the first production Google server has the wrong caption. From memory it says it was running an 8086 microprocessor running DOS. This simply cannot be true. Adding to my suspicion is that this caption is identical to one from a couple pages earlier for a much much older pc type system. I can't buy a coffee table book with such a gross error, I'd wonder if anything in the book was correct. The technical reviewers of this book missed a whopper. I would buy a corrected version.
Any collection considering itself comprehensive in computer history needs CORE MEMORY........2007-08-07
CORE MEMORY: A VISUAL SURVEY OF VINTAGE COMPUTERS offers entries which document the history of computing - and some of the strange machines which rise and fall over five decades of the industry's growth. From old and large IBM room-sized systems to Minuteman missile control units, each selected vintage computer receives a full-page color photo and facing page of detail on its history and development. Mark Richards's color photos at times occupy several facing pages of detail. Any collection considering itself comprehensive in computer history needs CORE MEMORY.
Hella Sick.......2007-07-26
It was HELLA TIGHT. NERDS RULE!
you should buy many copies for friends and family.
I did.
Huge disappointment.......2007-07-15
This book is nothing more than a bare bones catalog of the Computer History Museum. It consists only of unimaginatively shot photos of hardware and brief blurbs on each system. It should have been much more.
Here's what's missing:
Scale -- You get no sense of the size of each system or element. A shot of core memory gets the same space on the page as an entire Cray super computer.
Technical scale -- There should have been a table or chart for each computer showing processor or calculation speed, memory, storage, I/O methodology, and other characteristics. Instead most computers have only a single technical spec (typically memory). Those entries use inconsistent terminology with no explanation of those terms, for example: ROM CORE ROPE, Transistor-Transistor Logic, Words, and DRUN.
Consistency -- There is no rhyme or reason to the photos. For example, the photos of the Eniac (a massive computer) consist only of tubes and wires. The Univac (another monster machine) is represented only by two photos of its "mercury delay line" memory (a technology that is not explained in the text). But we get to see two, two-page shots of the entire Johnniac control panel (why they included two shots of the same panel is not explained). There are no historic photos of computer installations and the people running them (photos that the Computer History Museum has in abundance).
Technological advancements -- You get no feel for how these machines worked and what made each machine better than its predecessor. The book should have noted the development of technologies (including transistors, integrated circuits, card readers, magnetic tape, and hard disks) and how they related to improved computer functionality. The book also fails to note the history of programming languages and their relationship to each of these computers.
Timeline -- The products are displayed sequentially but only a minimal effort is made to place them in a historical context.
Captions -- Not one picture has a caption. Many cry out for further explanation or clarification. For example, the SAGE computer section has a photo of what appears to be a soldering gun (or could it be the "built-in cigarette lighter and ashtray" referred to in the text?)
Important computers -- The book has machines only from the Computer History Museum. It fails to include some significant products.
Educational value -- I had hoped to use this book in a junior college computer history course I plan to teach this fall. But its educational value is nearly nil.
Coffee table book quality: Some reviewers have referred to "Core Memory" as a coffee table book. It barely qualifies. Such books have exciting, eye-catching photos. The photos in "Core Memory" are boring.
My guess is that this book was created primarily for sale in the Computer History Museum store. On that level, it's serves as a fine souvenir. It fails on all other fronts.
Great Coffee table book.......2007-07-03
HAL is alive and well in "Core Memory: A Visual Survey of Vintage Computers." Great photography and concise but informative text combine to provide a visual walk down history lane. For anyone who remembers working with an early Apple II or 8080 and wonders what came before.

Book Description
Take a drive down memory lane with this rare collection of gasoline station photographs from both public and private collections, touring a much simpler time in American history. Since its inception in the early 1900s, the service station has been an icon of the American roadside and a catalyst of our childhood memories. Included is a brief history of the development of the gasoline station in the United States and details about many of the companies which punctuated the roadsides with their buildings, including the Standard companies, Cities, Mobil, Phillips, Gulf, Shell, Texaco, and Conoco. Filled with over 500 black and white photos, Roadside Memories captures the essence of American life over the first seventy years of this century. Captions provide station location and era identification. These nostalgic photos aid both the collector and historian interested filling up on high-grade service station pumps, classic advertising, architecture, and classic automobiles of the 1920s-70s.

History ok, small geography of pictures.......2004-04-19
This book offers a very basic history of the gas companies. The picures in the book are almost all from Tennessee. I do not feel that the pictures choosen offer a fair representation of "vintage gas stations." I believe that the book could have been much more appealing had the authors chosen to use pictures from all over the country. They speak of stations located in California and the northeast yet there are very little pictures from either region. Also most of the pictures in the book were taken in the 1950s and 60s, there are few older photos.

Book Description
Jonathan Lethem is perhaps our most active literary voice mining the genre margins of our culture. In this unique collection he creates an anthology that no one else could. He draws on the work of such unforgettables as Julio Cortazar, who presents a man caught between the ancient and modern worlds unable to say which is real; Philip K. Dick, who tells the story of a man trapped on a spaceship of the somnolent, unable to sleep and slowly losing his mind; Shirley Jackson, who takes us on a nightmarish trip across town with a young secretary; and Oliver Sacks, who presents us with an aging hippie who possesses no memory of anything that has taken place since the early seventies.
What Lethem has done is nothing less than define a new genre of literature-the amnesia story-and in the process he invites us to sit down, pick up the book, and begin to forget.
Also including: John Franklin Bardin, Donald Barthelme, Thomas M. Disch, Karn Joy Fowler, David Grand, Anna Kavan, Haruki Murakami, Flann O'Brien, Edmund White, and many others.
Customer Reviews:
Some great stories, some so-so.......2003-02-24
When I saw this at a bookstore, I had to have it, being a big fan of that cheesiest of all literary and cinematic devices, amnesia.
Most of these stories were new to me, except for the Donald Barthelme's "Game," and some are great, such as Philip K. Dick's "I Hope I Will Arrive Soon," Brian Fawcett's "Soul Walker," and particularly a nonfiction entry from Oliver Sacks, "The Last Hippie." I did not care at all for "Sarah Canary," or "The Second Coming." Many of these "stories," are actually excerpts, which now makes me want to read Cornell Woolrich's "The Black Curtain" and "Cowboys Don't Cry" by L.J. Davis. Still, I have to say the best thing in the whole book is Lethem's introduction. After that, the book itself was a bit of a letdown. Still, I'm glad I bought it and I look forward to going through the books listed in his "Incomplete Annotated Bibliography of Amnesia Fiction."
Uneven and teasing, but contains gems.......2001-07-09
The theme is right up my alley and Lethem is one of my favorite authors. Nevertheless I found the book frustrating, because many of the pieces are excerpts from novels and show it, with abrupt endings that don't resolve anything. I'm grateful for having the chance to get tastes of these (mostly obscure) books, but it detracts from the anthology itself. Nevertheless, thanks to this I've already discovered, purchased and read two excellent novels I'd never heard of before -- Lawrence Shainberg's "Memories Of Amnesia" (first person view of eminent neurologist's mental collapse) and John Franklin Bardin's "The Deadly Percheron" (weirdo '40s noir) -- and in between enjoyed some old classics I hadn't re-read in a while, such as Philip K Dick's terrifying SF short story "I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon".
Hardly cohesive.......2001-06-22
While this book contains many wonderful short stories, it fails at being a cohesive anthology. Editor Lethem has broadly defined 'amnesia' define anything related to the doubt of one's mental state or existence. That's wide net, and the resulting catch is eclectic and disjointed.
I also have a problem with the excerpts from full novels. Although many stand well on their own, I always feel as if I'm not getting the full point. Once I was halfway through I began skipping the excerpts and focused on the complete short stories.
But as I said, there are many gems here. Particulary the Borges, Lethem, and Sacks stories stand out. If you read this with the understanding that most of the stories have nothing to do with the common perception of amnesia, it may be well worth your time.
Mmmm... yummy........2001-06-20
Are you worried that coughing up the bucks for an anthology will leave you with two or three gem stories and a pile of duds? Well don't worry this time, kids, Lethem delivers the goods. At least eight solid keepers in this one that I will certainly read again at some point. Overall, the theme works very well, and the variety of experiences (from creepy to wacky) is pretty wide. It's not all bumps on the head, waking up in white-walled rooms...
Unforgettable.......2000-12-08
A terrific concept brilliantly executed. The editor has gathered a superb collection of stories and essays that address, directly or otherwise, the subject of memory loss. What is memory? What does it mean to remember, and why does it matter? These are only a few of the questions that are explored from many different perspectives by Martin Amis, Oliver Sacks, Vladimir Nabokov, Philip K. Dick, and many other distinguished writers. This is one book you won't soon forget!

ASIN: 0896586022 |
Book Description
For many farmers their farm tractor is almost a part of the family. "This Old Tractor" is the ultimate oral and visual tribute to the classic farm tractor. The text is made up of humorous and sentimental tractor stories, essays, and memories about such momentous events as a farmer's first tractor, learning to drive a tractor, and the "art" of collecting and restoring tractors. Part family farm nostalgia, part reminiscences about faithful old tractors, . "This Old Tractor" is chock-full of endearing pieces written by all the well-known tractor book authors and historians: Randy Leffingwell, Ralph W. Sanders, Robert Pripps, C. H. Wendel, Bill Vossler, Don Macmillan, and CBS "Sunday Morning"'s Roger Welsch. Other writers and farmers, such as John Hildebrand (author of "Mapping the Family Farm"), Sara De Luca (author of "Dancing the Cows Home"), and Patricia Penton Leimbach (author of several farm life books and considered the Erma Bombeck of the farm), also contribute. We've even tracked down historical tractor poetry! The text of "This Old Tractor" is enhanced throughout by a variety of artwork, including farming paintings by Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton, cartoons by Bob Artley (author of the syndicated cartoon series "Memories of a Former Kid"), historical photos, and full-color photos by Ralph W. Sanders, Randy Leffingwell, Andrew Morland, and others. Colorful old ads, tractor catalogs and magazine covers, and tractor toys are sure to bring back warm memories of cherished days spent on the family farm.

Book Description
In 1962, Samuel K. Rubin founded 8mm Collector, the predecessor to Classic Images, a widely respected publication in the vintage film hobby that celebrates the golden age of Hollywood. He was instrumental in beginning the "vintage film fan movement," founding The Society for Cinephiles, as well as organizing the Cinecon vintage film conventions.
This is simultaneously a history of the vintage film hobby, a history of Classic Images, and a memoir of Rubin's forty years in the center of the hobby's world. Rubin has drawn from his personal experiences with industry professionals from the silent and early sound era, and from his service during the more than 320 issues of Classic Images published since that magazine's inception. The book covers the birth of 8mm Collector and includes reviews of the classic films, reviews of books and videos of the early screen and profiles of classic film industry personalities. Classic Images still provides a medium for film enthusiasts to share their experiences with different vendors, buy and sell movie memorabilia, and generally covers the entire movie industry from the viewpoint of the collector.
