This book is great! I use it all the time and my pages have been dog-eared to death. Very useful and the pictures can give you some great ideas! I pull it out all the time, even just to look at the pictures.

This has been one of my best purchases yet for gardening. From preparing the land to the final touches this book contains excellent detail. In addition, you have multiple plans for projects from gazebos to water fountains. I highly recommend this book. You will not regret the purchase.

They weren't lying when they said new complete guide! It has everything and more. It has really inspired me.The pictures are fantastic. They can give you ideas themselves. This book lets you know how to plan out your landscape, let's you use your imagination, and gives you choices and step by step instructions to make your landscaping dreams come true. I highly reccomend it. This is the best book out there! It has some excellent ideas!
greatest landscaping book I've seen so far.......2003-06-23
This is really a great and very comprehensive book, I love it. I saw it the first time in a store and I was really impressed by it, so I decided to look for it on amazon. My favorite part is the different ways shown to incorporate water. Also I liked the thoughtful tips that should be considered when planning a garden, such as a form of privacy around the spa.

There are some interesting and workable ideas in the book. Before purchasing you might want to check out your local library first. I'm not disappointed with it however I think the layouts are more for the professional landscape/design area. There is even a section for making your own pesticides. It is a nice book to have on hand.

This book touched on all aspects of gardening and landscaping - design elements and plans, water features, walls & fences, gazebos, decks and patios. It offers suggestions on plants and flowers appropriate for specific areas and climates. There is also a section with solutions to common problems. I highly recommend this book. The text gave me a lot of knowledge, while the pictures inspired me to start working on my own yard!

This book is very informative and gives alot of ideas and information on how to landscape smaller areas.
Idiot's Guide to Landscaping Illustrated.......2006-06-27
This book is not at all what was expected for the price - all the pictures are black and white except for a very few color pages in the very center, which makes it almost impossible to help the reader identify plants, trees, shrubs, etc. All the black & white pictures blend so trying to distinguish what the publisher wanted the reader to focus on is extremely difficult. Might as well publish the book with only words and brief hand drawn illustrations. The reader still remains an "idiot" needing a guide to landscaping.

Landscaping is a science as well as an art, but it doesn't mean you have to leave everything to the pros. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Landscaping" by Joel M. Lerner gives you the essentials so that even if you decide to let professional landscapers dig up, rearrange, and decorate your yard, you can make sure they do exactly what you envisioned. With Lerner's tips and detailed information, you can get a handle on the science and art of your own personal outdoors.
What I appreciate most about Lerner's Guide to Landscaping is the abundance of photos, sketches, and graphics. The layman's language text is well illustrated, leaving very little room for confusion or misinterpretation. And I especially enjoy the headings word play, like "The Plat Thickens," "Rocks Rule!" "Turf's Up!" and "Bean There, Vine That."
Aside from the photos that graphically explain the text, the sidebars and tipboxes are strategically located to answer questions you may have about the topic. For example, the "Green Thumb Guides" offer fundamental information and details spiked with Lerner's personal preferences and suggestions. The "Poison Ivy" box gives warnings and expert cautions about things that are often overlooked or taken for granted. The "Roots and Stems" sidebar includes definitions and explanations of technical landscaping terms. There are also tipboxes on "Planting Ideas" and "Suggested Tools." And most important, at the end of each chapter is a "The Least You Need to Know" section - in-a-nutshell bullet-lists of basics for beginners and reminders for experts.

Being in a rural area and living on a small family farm, we aren't overly concerned with decorative landscaping. We try to make every inch of our property productive and useful. Apart from the fields and pastures in use for livestock, we have allotted a small area for produce on our property.
Within the 1.5 acres surrounding our farmhouse, we have made allowance of space for a vegetable garden (based upon the concepts of Edward C. Smith in his book titled "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible" and an orchard that adheres to the philosophy found in Patrick Whitefield's book titled "How to Make a Forest Garden".
With the ideas found in this book, "The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping", we are now planning to landscape with a conscience and purpose aside from simple aesthetics. We are delighted with the information provided to serve as a foundation for our planning.
We have given the 4 star review based upon the fact that this book hasn't been revised for nearly 25 years and could certainly benefit from more current data. And, we would always like to see more color photographs and illustrations to complement the text.

I just wanted to add my voice, if the authors are listening, that this book is a great resource and a new edition would be so welcome. Some of the info doesn't go out of date, of course, but there are so many new cultivars and plants that are more easily obtained than they were 20 years ago that would fit well into the home landscape and the permaculture view of gardening. I got this book at the library and i may buy a used copy, but I would jump at the chance of an updated edition!
Good Introduction to Landscaping, good reference.......2003-03-29
I have a couple of minor criticisms about this book, so let me begin with those. Firstly, it is showing its age. It makes frequent reference in the early chapters to the water shortages and environmental disasters that were widely expected to occur by the end of the century. As you know by now, those never really materialised. There is still plenty of reason to be concerned about the way American society (mis)uses resources, but the threat is neither as immediate or as dire as the author makes out.
Secondly, in the suggestions on building planters, and retaining walls, the author fails to note the potential dangers of CCA treated lumber (now being phased out) and railroad ties treated with creosote.
Lastly, more color illustrations would have been nice. Those that are there are very good. The b&w drawings are nice, but not as good as photos.
Those criticisms out of the way, the book is excellent. The first few chapters provide the rationale for edible landscaping, then introduces the principles of landscaping, giving numerous examples of applying different themes to different climates. The chapters on techniques, especially in relation to trees (the basics of pruning, and plenty of advice on espaliering) are particularly good. An entire chapter is devoted to identifying insects and dealing with the undesirables.
The second half of the book is a plant encylopedia. Handy to have in one volume, but if you already have a good plant encyclopedia, it is probably redundant.

I grew up in a garden designed using this book, and now I am working on designing my own. It is a teriffic book with a lot of information about different edible plants and how to design an edible landscape. The only drawbacks are (1) it's a bit dated (new smaller rootstalks let you have smaller trees than you could in '82) and (2) it's a little bit california-centric.
Easy to read, thorough, and inspiring........2000-02-13
I love this book. I'm not a professional gardener, just a homeowner with a passion for gardening, and an interest in more sustainable and environmentally inclined gardening ideas and techniques. I believe this book has information that would be of benefit to almost any level of gardener. The author covers every aspect of gardening and landscape design in a very in thorough manner that is as informative as it is easy to read. For those who want to delve into related subjects she makes suggestions for additional reading that I found very helpful. Her encyclopedia of plants is extensive. The astounding list of plant and seed suppliers she has compiled is a great benefit. If there be any fault in the book, it is that it is somewhat dated with the most recent edition being 1982. Her coverage of drip irrigation reflects this. Otherwise it is superb book!

This book is a worthwhile investment for homeowners/gardeners who want to tackle their own landscape with a decent education on what's involved. The book covers all the basics of starting with your landscape wish list...garden features, amending soil & some helpful plant recommendations. Although this book certainly couldn't be depended upon as an independent source for completing a home landscape from start to finish, it definitely touches on all the important phases, & helps the reader realize how much is involved. As a landscape designer, I recommend this book to those who have little or no background with gardening, plants & maintenance, yet have the aspiration to begin learning how to bring their property to a whole new level.
