    Book Description

It takes a great woman to spot greatness in other women. Have a good laugh at your own expense.
Discover how completely happy you are in your own skin.

Such experiences, says Véronique Vienne, are expressions of the art of being a woman.

In this gem of a book, Vienne gently guides women of all ages and cultures through the practical– and a few rather more whimsical– lessons in the art of womanhood and in the joy of loving life as only a woman can. Along the way, she imparts unique gifts of wisdom such as:

    • An alert mind is the most eye-catching feature of a face.
    • Smart compliments can improve the way you look as much as beauty products.
    • Paying more to eat less is counterintuitive, yet it is the best diet around.
    • Fashion is a nonsurgical nip-and-tuck technique.
    • Female camaraderie keeps you healthy.
    • Men should be given the benefit of the doubt (because they truly need it).

With its spirited prose and witty illustrations, The Art of Being a Woman informs and celebrates the many ways we all can release our insecurities, count our blessings, and experience what the French call “joie de vivre,” a lively tryst between heart and mind.

5 out of 5 stars Tales for the Church.......2006-08-20

I have read these stories to our church Prayer Breakfast group, as devotionals, over a series of many months. We all enjoy them immensely. The style is easy, engaging and the messages are timeless. I have gone on to present Philip Gulley's other works to the group, but this is still my favorite. Others have borrowed this book from time to time. Philip is getting to be a Presbyterian favorite. Imagine that!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Home Spun Experiences.......2006-03-25

Terrific book. Wonderful, warm, pratical, short stories. Excellent examples of how to treat others. Full of love, respect and fortitude. Have mentioned the book to many of my children as a wonderful source of positive examples as to the approach to life. Made certain to give a copy to my daughter. Each story takes less than 5 minutes to read but were so meaniful I still remember many of them.

Gina Cascone's Life al Dente: Laughter and Love in an Italian-American Family is an enjoyable, emotional roller coaster of a memoir. With the kind of sensitivity you get only from someone who's lived the experiences, Cascone's story is laugh-out-loud funny, heart-wrenchingly sad, and everything in between. The first-born in a tightly knit Italian Catholic family cursed with only girls, Cascone (the author of Pagan Babies) shares sweet memories of hilarious hiccups she experienced growing up, first in an overcrowded semi-detached house in a heavily Italian enclave in New Jersey, and then as the only ethnic variation in the suburbia of the "American Dream." You don't have to have been the only anything growing up to relate--as Cascone wisely acknowledges, we've all felt that way. Teenage angst is universal, as are the growing pains we experience from birth to death. So what sets Cascone's story apart is her intelligent sense of humor and the passionate love she feels for her family. She recognizes their quirks, and treasures every one of them. And just like in life, it's easier to laugh at just about anything in retrospect. An easy read that's impossible to put down, Life al Dente is the kind of memoir that makes us all wish we were taking notes growing up. --Leora Y. Bloom

    Book Description

With the irreverence, gutsy spirit, and warmhearted hilarity that made Pagan Babies a classic, here is the Italian-American experience served up by the author who has been crowned the Patron Saint of Humor.

Before the Sopranos, there were the Cascones....Life al Dente, the new memoir from the author of Pagan Babies, brings the same wit and wonder to the telling of Gina Cascone's Italian-American girlhood...well, boyhood actually. In an Italian family, few things are a greater handicap than being born female, but Gina's Dad generously decided to overlook this shortcoming and raise Gina as a boy -- the son he always wanted. As lawyer to numerous "alleged" mobsters, Dad had some colorful clients who would regularly gather around the basement pool table to talk business, drink, and be hustled by junior high Gina. There was no way Gina was going to turn into one of the big hair girls of Italian-American stereotype, but her journey would have all the bumps that come with that cherished immigrant ambition of moving from steerage to the suburbs in three generations. That sense of dislocation came early for Gina as her family moved from the kind of neighborhood where old men play bocce and the pet frogs are named Nunzio to one where Barbies and frozen food prevail. And though Gina's brains got her into the top high school, she quickly made the lonely discovery that she was the only one there whose name ended in a vowel.

In our overly pasteurized and homogenized world, there's a real hunger to find and celebrate our connection to old world roots and traditions. Life al Dente abounds in hilarious stories, but also rewards readers with a genuine and poignant contemplation of cultural identity.

2 out of 5 stars A Little Laughter, but Poor Writing Style.......2007-09-10

Life al Dente has a few amusing moments with heartfelt memories by the author. The predominantly Southern Italian family memories are described directly and crassly, devoid of any flair, descriptive language, or writing style. Foul language accents this poorly written novel. The cover illustration and title are its only redeeming features.

5 out of 5 stars Life al Dente: Laughter and Love in an Italian-American Family .......2006-11-03

Life al Dente is a wonderfully written and well-spun story that will take anyone back to their youth to remember the finer things in life. Gina Cascone reminds us that family, no matter how flawed, is a constant source of joy and strength. As a writer of a number of novels, I enjoyed the pace and flow of the story. It painted beautiful images in my mind that left me smiling chapter after chapter.

    4 out of 5 stars Remembering Home.......2003-08-15

Don't think you need to be a member of the family to enjoy this warm, loving and quite funny look at childhood. You can feel the warmth this author has for her zany family in every nook and cranny. The feelings are universal; love, loss, despair at your parent's behavior and the laughter that only family can share. Curl up with this book and remember what it was like to be a child.

5 out of 5 stars Love and laughter, Italian style.......2003-07-31

Ah, to have the relatives, the wit, and the warm memories of a flawed but sincerely loving, close-knit Italian family such as Gina Cascone's. But even with the same material, few could render the experience of growing up Italian and female in suburbia as well as Cascone has done in this, her 2nd book. The eels! Omigod, the eels for Christmas dinner, first writhing in the bathtub, then writhing around your arm, then writhing on the chopping block, and STILL writhing as, cut into cross-sections, they were tossed into the saute pan! Now, that's a memory few can share. Funny, sad, sentimental, tolerant, it's everything you could want from a short little book. But the overwhelming feeling that comes through is Cascone's love and gratitude for her family.
    Don't miss it.

    Book Description

George Lopez tells of his inspirational rise from dead-end, back-alley kid to prime-time TV sensation in the sidesplitting New York Times bestseller Why You Crying?

When G-Lo gives a comic performance, there's not a dry eye, or an empty seat, in the house. While he can make his audiences cry with laughter, Lopez's own life -- before becoming one of America's most popular Latino personalities -- was anything but funny.

Abandoned by his California migrant-worker father at the tender age of two months and deserted by his own mother at the age of ten years, Lopez was raised by his grandparents, who viewed love as a four-letter word. "I was angry, alone, teased, and tormented," writes Lopez. "I grew up around Nobodies as a Nobody wanting to be something else." Why You Crying? -- a sentence borrowed from the grandmother who bullied him -- is the story of Lopez's journey to become Somebody. Along the way he riffs on the amusing differences between Chicano and gringo culture, shares his struggle with alcohol and depression, reveals amusing backstage anecdotes, and paints a vivid portrait of a fascinating life and career that have broken barriers of race, culture, and class. Read it and weep!

" In this eagerly awaited autobiography, comedian and prime-time television star George Lopez tells the heartbreaking yet humorous story of his inspirational rise from dead-end kid in the Valley to giving a command performance before the president of the United States. It is a rare story that touches us so deeply with its humor, sadness, and powerful message that it transcends the walls of race, culture, and class that divide us. Why You Crying? is just such a story. Abandoned by his migrant-worker father at the tender age of two months, deserted by a wild, mixed-up mother at the age of ten years, Lopez grew up angry, alone, teased, and tormented in California's San Fernando Valley, raised by grandparents who viewed love as a four-letter word. Inspired by his idols, Freddie Prinze Sr. and Richard Pryor, Lopez sets out on a tumultuous twenty-year journey into the manic world of stand-up comedy -- trying to learn a skill nobody can teach; scoring one night and bombing the next; fighting anger, alcohol, depression, and doubt all while battling the barriers built to keep Chicanos from breaking through, especially on network TV. Today, the George Lopez show is a prime-time hit on ABC and his sold-out stand-up performances attract thousands of fans of all ages, each drawn to the sidesplitting riffs mined from a life so sad it had to be funny. Why You Crying? takes an outsider from the San Fernando Valley to Warner Bros. studios to inside the Emmys to plush Pebble Beach and all the way to the halls of Harvard. Along the way it's pure G. Lo -- raw, real, and, ultimately, uplifting. "

5 out of 5 stars Why You Crying? : My Long, Hard Look at Life, Love, and Laughter.......2006-03-17

I love this book. Not only did the book help me understand his comedy even more but I was was able to relate to him more now than before I read his book.

On top of him giving us a look into what his life was truly like he still made me laugh with his excerps.

5 out of 5 stars George Lopez is #1 in my book.......2006-01-09

First of all I can say that after reading this book I laughed and I cried. It was very touching and I think so many people can relate to George Lopez and his childhood. You have to give George alot of credit where credit is due. He has come along way, just look how far he has come.... That's got to count for something..... I have all his cd's and his dvd's. I can play them over and over again.... But nothing compares to seeing George Lopez live in concert. That was one of the best comedy concert I have ever been to... The book is well worth reading and I don't think if your a true George Lopez fan you won't be disappointed... You will laugh and maybe even cry...

2 out of 5 stars Days of Whine and Roses.......2005-02-27

I really expected to enjoy this book, but I was severely disappointed. Understandably, George Lopez had a rotten childhood. In the first half or so of his autobiography, he constantly reiterates this point repeatedly, to the point where the reader stops learning anything new and, at least in my case, dreads reading the next paragraph. Toward the end of the book, Lopez switches from whining about his rotten childhood to constantly pointing out his belief that he is God's gift to Latinos. He also goes into great detail about his self-belief that he is a major talent as a golfer, as well as an infallible comedian. However, his "hard look" at his life never dwells on any of his faults or mistakes. He briefly mentions getting caught in school with pot, but says he only had it because someone gave it to him before school and he had nowhere else to put it. Lopez mentions a problem in his marriage that causes his wife to give up on him and kick him out of the house, but he softcoats the entire episode. (Reading between the lines, it appears he had at least one extra-marital fling, but he doesn't want to take a "long, hard look" at whatever the problem was.) Between his whining about his childhood and his acceptance as the greatest thing to ever happen to Latinos and comedy, I found George Lopez' book to read more like a psychiatric session for him than an open and honest revelation to his fans. If you must read this book, I strongly recommend checking it out from your local library before committing your own hard-earned money.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Humorous.......2004-10-22

George Lopez' autobiography is an inspiring read about his life. It tells how he overcame his childhood to become the success that he is today. I was really moved by his childhood and how he learned to overcome the problems in his childhood. I especially enjoyed reading how he got his television show and the stories he told related to it. The book is very humorous and had me giggling the whole way through.
A humorous and inspiring story of one of TV's best comic actors.

Hi: I'm very disappointed. I've e-mailed this Company several times. My credit card was charged and yet after several months I never received the book. Very poor customer service.

    5 out of 5 stars ...Inspiring stuff!.......2003-08-07

I'll admit that I bought this book purely on the basis that Danny Wallace had been one of the two brains behing the spectacularly entertaining "Are You Dave Gorman?", which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Although sceptical at first, that this might be a preplanned commercial venture, I was soon won over by the brilliance of the concept and the fantastic enthusiasm that Danny Wallace conveys in his writing. Along with his genuinely funny self-depreciating gags, you can't help but get swept up in the whole project.

At the end of the day, Join Me was a bloody brilliant idea. My only complaint is that I wish I'd thought of it first!!

But this book, the man needs his cups of tea!

    Book Description

Who would think open-heart surgery at the age of 25 could be funny! Hilariously funny.

Take Heart! True Stories of Life, Love, and Laughter chronicles the challenges faced by Rudy Wilson Galdonik, motivational humorist and heart patient. Whether it's the challenge of having $40,000 worth of "stuff" in her chest to keep her heart ticking (that's the uninstalled price of 2 mechanical heart valves, a pacemaker, bovine patch, assorted leads and a pacer wire named Emily), being an off-the-wall animal lover or just a Yankee living in the Deep South, Rudy keeps readers in stitches while she encourages them to see the funny.

If you've ever caught yourself ogling at your neighbor's trash, or considered your pet a four-legged child, or tried to pass as genteel and failed miserably, then consider this book. If you select doctors based on sex appeal, dance with the finesse of a spastic robot, or know someone who drives The Ugliest Car in the World, then this book is a definite must-read. Rudy writes like most people think, but are afraid to admit. You'll laugh, you'll cry. You'll see yourself over and over on every page of these hilarious and often times poignant stories.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Faith, illness and above all HUMOR in a three way headon collision!.......2007-06-07

Rudy Galdonik has lived through a lot of painful experiences. But so have a lot of other people. What sets her apart is how she shares them in such a humorous way through her book TAKE HEART. In it she masterfully takes some of life's hardest curve balls and hits them out of the park! Especially hysterical is her story "Three's A Crowd" about her room mates during her second long hospital stay. I was laughing so hard the person sitting next to me on the plane almost called the flight attendant! This is a warm, spiritual, unbelievably funny book that you will not be able to put down. Highly recommended for you or for someone in your life who needs a little laughter.

    5 out of 5 stars Feeling Good.......2004-05-03

I was amazed to read a book about so many life problems, and end up feeling good at the end! The author certainly knows how to keep life in perspective, and does it with great wit. On a number of occasions I burst out laughing. I would call this a "light read" due to the sense of humor of the author. What a great example of making lemonade out of lemons!

5 out of 5 stars A Five Heart Beat Rating!!!!!.......2004-03-03

One of those books that is hard to put down once you start reading. Doris Day meets Jerry Seinfeld. Multiple heart surgeries, raising a family, and experiencing widow-hood at an early age would do most of us mere mortals in. Rudy manages to take on all these experiences and give a humorous and soulful insight into dealing with life's challenges. Reading this book you go from profound sympathy to a grin from ear to ear, page after page. I used to think the heart was that thing in your body that pumps the blood around. Rudy has that unique writer's gift that can deftly story-tell the emotional heart that keeps us all going, spinning humor and inspiration from cover to cover

5 out of 5 stars And you thought you had problems!.......2004-03-02

And I thought I had it bad....this is a story that made me appreciate the few scars I carry on my body and in my heart. Rudy is as cute as her name and her words of encouragement are as priceless as the machinery in her petite frame that keeps her ticking like a Timex watch in a washing machine. She writes with honest emotion and belly laughing humor. You'll get caught up in her life as she works through the unfairness, the frustations and the funny stuff of ordinary life. From scolding interns to stealing out of the neighbors trash ( my personal favorite), she seems to have found a wonderfully refreshing way to simply cope.
If you are having a blue period in your life, or riding on a rainbow, you need a dose of Rudy Wilson Galdonik and you will wish she was living next door. She willingly gives her heart, so TAKE HEART!

5 out of 5 stars We loved this book!.......2004-03-01

Rudy has a gift to share her world in a witty, self-deprecating and joyful way. You will laugh out loud and want to read passages to anyone nearby who will listen. It's amazingly life affirming even when dealing with the biggest challenges we face. Taking Heart will make you want to be a better person, but be able to smile even if you fail. When you put it down, you will want to immediately pick it up again. It is a wonderfully entertaining book that uses humor to deal with life's greatest obstacles. Thinking of Rudy as the new millennium Erma Bombeck is easily justified.

    5 out of 5 stars Life changing........2005-03-20

After ordering the entire 2nd season of LHOTP impulsively late one night while watching infomercials and eating onion rings from Fudruckers I absolutely fell in love with Michael Landon. He's everything I wish I could be. I mean, here I am; forty-four years old, unemployed, pretty overweight, recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and not doing a great job controlling it, rarely cleanly shaven, divorced, childless (as far as I know), and without so much as a decent american made car that runs reliably. But Michael, now there's a quality guy, a real role model.

I heard from a friend in my favorite gaming chat room that there was a great book about Michael. I don't really care to read much, aside from an article every once in a while about Dale Earnhardt that my mom will send me. But I picked up this book and read it cover to cover in only a month.

If you have any self respect, you'll probably be disappointed by this book. Hopefully you'll at least be embarrassed to admit that you considered buying it. But, if you're like me, without many other quality sources of entertainment, it might be just the thing.

    2 out of 5 stars A Thrown-Together Mish-Mash of Memories.......2000-10-17

I picked up this book thinking that it would provide information about Michael Landon from the people who knew him best. And to a certain degree at least, it did. The book contains some great photographs of Landon behind the scenes in his many television projects and with his family and friends. But the book is essentially a disconnected group of stories told to the authors by friends and former coworkers of Landon's, with a very thin thread tying them together. What you walk away from after reading this book is a sense that Landon was a good man, a great father, and a perfectionist in his work -- with wonderful stories to back that up. But what the book is missing is depth. I would have preferred to see lengthy interviews with a fraction of the people this book quotes, because those would have been more illuminating about Landon as a person. Instead, the reader is left to piece together the half-page anecdotes of dozens and dozens of people, some of whom knew Landon for years and others of whom knew him only briefly. Maybe this was the intention of the authors and of Landon's family. Any fan of Landon's work will certainly enjoy what's here. But I think a man like Michael Landon is deserving of a more substantial treatment, and I was left wishing the authors had taken some more time and done a better job (the kind of job Landon himself apparently would have done if the job had been given to him).

      Product Description

This novel provides entertaining glimpses into the almost comical lives of some foreigners in Tokyo, and shows us how their very different adventures and experiences become hilariously and unthinkably intertwined within the vast social landscape of this anything-goes metropolis. Peter is an underachieving English teacher in a perpetual state of depression and bad luck. Henry, a successful stockbroker prowling the city for romantic fun, gets stuck with a hysterical girlfriend with marriage on her mind instead. Ernesto, a popular diplomat and bachelor-about-town, hosts a chaotic dinner at home. Marjorie and Paul launch World War III in the city's finest neighborhoods. Stephanie, a free soul struggling as a proof-reader by day, reinvents herself to gatecrash Tokyo's best networking parties. Alastair considers buying a monkey to replace his dead fish. Reena plans a party that turns into a shocking screaming match. And much more.
