Life al Dente: Laughter and Love in an Italian-American Family

Gina Cascone's Life al Dente: Laughter and Love in an Italian-American Family is an enjoyable, emotional roller coaster of a memoir. With the kind of sensitivity you get only from someone who's lived the experiences, Cascone's story is laugh-out-loud funny, heart-wrenchingly sad, and everything in between. The first-born in a tightly knit Italian Catholic family cursed with only girls, Cascone (the author of Pagan Babies) shares sweet memories of hilarious hiccups she experienced growing up, first in an overcrowded semi-detached house in a heavily Italian enclave in New Jersey, and then as the only ethnic variation in the suburbia of the "American Dream." You don't have to have been the only anything growing up to relate--as Cascone wisely acknowledges, we've all felt that way. Teenage angst is universal, as are the growing pains we experience from birth to death. So what sets Cascone's story apart is her intelligent sense of humor and the passionate love she feels for her family. She recognizes their quirks, and treasures every one of them. And just like in life, it's easier to laugh at just about anything in retrospect. An easy read that's impossible to put down, Life al Dente is the kind of memoir that makes us all wish we were taking notes growing up. --Leora Y. BloomBook Description
With the irreverence, gutsy spirit, and warmhearted hilarity that made Pagan Babies a classic, here is the Italian-American experience served up by the author who has been crowned the Patron Saint of Humor. Before the Sopranos, there were the Cascones....Life al Dente, the new memoir from the author of Pagan Babies, brings the same wit and wonder to the telling of Gina Cascone's Italian-American girlhood...well, boyhood actually. In an Italian family, few things are a greater handicap than being born female, but Gina's Dad generously decided to overlook this shortcoming and raise Gina as a boy -- the son he always wanted. As lawyer to numerous "alleged" mobsters, Dad had some colorful clients who would regularly gather around the basement pool table to talk business, drink, and be hustled by junior high Gina. There was no way Gina was going to turn into one of the big hair girls of Italian-American stereotype, but her journey would have all the bumps that come with that cherished immigrant ambition of moving from steerage to the suburbs in three generations. That sense of dislocation came early for Gina as her family moved from the kind of neighborhood where old men play bocce and the pet frogs are named Nunzio to one where Barbies and frozen food prevail. And though Gina's brains got her into the top high school, she quickly made the lonely discovery that she was the only one there whose name ended in a vowel.
In our overly pasteurized and homogenized world, there's a real hunger to find and celebrate our connection to old world roots and traditions. Life al Dente abounds in hilarious stories, but also rewards readers with a genuine and poignant contemplation of cultural identity.

Why You Crying?: My Long, Hard Look at Life, Love, and Laughter
George Lopez , and Armen Keteyian Manufacturer: Touchstone ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0743259955 |
Book Description
When G-Lo gives a comic performance, there's not a dry eye, or an empty seat, in the house. While he can make his audiences cry with laughter, Lopez's own life -- before becoming one of America's most popular Latino personalities -- was anything but funny.
Abandoned by his California migrant-worker father at the tender age of two months and deserted by his own mother at the age of ten years, Lopez was raised by his grandparents, who viewed love as a four-letter word. "I was angry, alone, teased, and tormented," writes Lopez. "I grew up around Nobodies as a Nobody wanting to be something else." Why You Crying? -- a sentence borrowed from the grandmother who bullied him -- is the story of Lopez's journey to become Somebody. Along the way he riffs on the amusing differences between Chicano and gringo culture, shares his struggle with alcohol and depression, reveals amusing backstage anecdotes, and paints a vivid portrait of a fascinating life and career that have broken barriers of race, culture, and class. Read it and weep!

" In this eagerly awaited autobiography, comedian and prime-time television star George Lopez tells the heartbreaking yet humorous story of his inspirational rise from dead-end kid in the Valley to giving a command performance before the president of the United States. It is a rare story that touches us so deeply with its humor, sadness, and powerful message that it transcends the walls of race, culture, and class that divide us. Why You Crying? is just such a story. Abandoned by his migrant-worker father at the tender age of two months, deserted by a wild, mixed-up mother at the age of ten years, Lopez grew up angry, alone, teased, and tormented in California's San Fernando Valley, raised by grandparents who viewed love as a four-letter word. Inspired by his idols, Freddie Prinze Sr. and Richard Pryor, Lopez sets out on a tumultuous twenty-year journey into the manic world of stand-up comedy -- trying to learn a skill nobody can teach; scoring one night and bombing the next; fighting anger, alcohol, depression, and doubt all while battling the barriers built to keep Chicanos from breaking through, especially on network TV. Today, the George Lopez show is a prime-time hit on ABC and his sold-out stand-up performances attract thousands of fans of all ages, each drawn to the sidesplitting riffs mined from a life so sad it had to be funny. Why You Crying? takes an outsider from the San Fernando Valley to Warner Bros. studios to inside the Emmys to plush Pebble Beach and all the way to the halls of Harvard. Along the way it's pure G. Lo -- raw, real, and, ultimately, uplifting. "Customer Reviews:

...Inspiring stuff!.......2003-08-07
Although sceptical at first, that this might be a preplanned commercial venture, I was soon won over by the brilliance of the concept and the fantastic enthusiasm that Danny Wallace conveys in his writing. Along with his genuinely funny self-depreciating gags, you can't help but get swept up in the whole project.
At the end of the day, Join Me was a bloody brilliant idea. My only complaint is that I wish I'd thought of it first!!
But this book, the man needs his cups of tea!

Take Heart! True Stories of Life, Love, and Laughter
Rudy Wilson Galdonik Manufacturer: Broad Horizons Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0974185248 |
Book Description
Who would think open-heart surgery at the age of 25 could be funny! Hilariously funny.Take Heart! True Stories of Life, Love, and Laughter chronicles the challenges faced by Rudy Wilson Galdonik, motivational humorist and heart patient. Whether it's the challenge of having $40,000 worth of "stuff" in her chest to keep her heart ticking (that's the uninstalled price of 2 mechanical heart valves, a pacemaker, bovine patch, assorted leads and a pacer wire named Emily), being an off-the-wall animal lover or just a Yankee living in the Deep South, Rudy keeps readers in stitches while she encourages them to see the funny.
If you've ever caught yourself ogling at your neighbor's trash, or considered your pet a four-legged child, or tried to pass as genteel and failed miserably, then consider this book. If you select doctors based on sex appeal, dance with the finesse of a spastic robot, or know someone who drives The Ugliest Car in the World, then this book is a definite must-read. Rudy writes like most people think, but are afraid to admit. You'll laugh, you'll cry. You'll see yourself over and over on every page of these hilarious and often times poignant stories.
