Book Description
Introducing a revolutionary new approach to detail design in landscape architecture
In this groundbreaking book, Niall Kirkwood of the Harvard Graduate School of Design takes a fresh, holistic approach to the theories, approaches, and practices of landscape detail. With the support of a wealth of graphic and written material taken from historic and contemporary landscape designwork, he clearly demonstrates the role that landscape detail plays in the design process. Going beyond theoretical considerations, Professor Kirkwood outlines landscape detail as a primary design activity, both pragmatic and poetic, using a range of built landscape design examples.
A valuable resource for professionals and students in landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, and environmental design, The Art of Landscape Detail:
* Provides a practical introduction to the aesthetic concerns, form, language, and expression of landscape detail
* Explores a wide range of detail issues-including materials, climate, durability, implementation, and failure-and their influence on the overall detail design process
* Examines detail design processes and research approaches that designers can apply in the analysis and development of their own work
* Contains in-depth case studies of eight award-winning landscape architecture design projects, including provocative discussions with the designers on the establishment and evolution of their detail design philosophy
* Features more than 150 images illustrating forms and site detail from national and international built landscapes

Product Description
Beadmaker and author Corina Tettinger says she wanted Passing the Flame to bring the teacher into your house. Tettingers chatty writing style gives the reader that teacher effect, making the book very user-friendly. The instructions are easy to understand, and colorful photos throughout the book provide a visual feast. Photos show every step of the beadmaking process in detail, including incorporating it into jewelry. The format of the book makes it easy to keep open on the workbench while following along and exploring techniques.
In her foreword, Tettinger asks Are you going to learn everything there is to know about beadmaking in this book? She answers, Hell no. Tettingers designs are based on techniques that have been used for centuries mainly dots and lines. Its her precision, color choices, and particular combinations of these techniques that make her work unique. Because her techniques are both basic and innovative, a beginning beadmaker will get a good foundation with Tettingers book, and one with more experience will find plenty of new ideas and inspiration.
Customer Reviews:
PASSING THE FLAME - LEARN HOW TO MAKE GLASS BEADS.......2007-03-25
A fantastic book. The first pages show Corina's progression as an artist.
From her beginner beads, to her now advanced beads. Lots of color photos.
Shows how to make a round bead. How to make a floral, an encased frog bead,
and more.
An easy to read book with step by step instructions. Talking about color combinations in glass, dot work, stringer control and how to pull your own stringer. Corina is a master artist and this book shares her knowledge with everyone. A great how to book that will make even the most complicated bead designs seem attainable.
I really loved reading this book, it's a great resource for lampwork artists. Funny, with lots of helpful hints and beautiful inspiring
photos of Corina's lampwork beads.

Customer Reviews:
Mighty $teep Learning Curve.......2006-09-01
"Gazebos and Trellises : Authentic Details for Design and Restoration (Historic Landscape Detail S.) (Hardcover)" is a series of 200 rather small plates of historic structures that garden designers, preservationists and landscape architects may find of marginal use. The author's renderings mainly derived from field and library research of East Coast structures are unemotional, 1-point perspective, flat representations that I find undemonstrative and difficult on the eye.
In the back of the book are three pages listing plants and Vines from: Colonial Times and Republic 1700-1820 - Later Times 1820-1875 - to -Modern. Included in the list is Gloire de Dijon, 1853, - Gardenia, 1899 - and Souvenir de la Malmaison, 1893; among my personal favorites.
The author's rendering style is so dispassionate that his plates of Mount Vernon, Montpelier, and Monticello seem foreign to me.
There is an inadequacy of books on garden trellis and gazebos in general; and a paucity of anything of this genre. Nonetheless, I remain unenthusiastic about the content and cost of this book.
Inspiration.......2001-08-08
Peter Joel Harrison provides a valuable service to architects, designers, preservationists, landscapers and homeowners by researching, recording and presenting the details of historic homes and gardens. His books, full of accurate drawings of historic fences, gates, gazebos, trellises, pavement and garden walls, are tools for anyone who's restoring an 18th or 19th century home or landscape and inspiration for anyone who hopes to infuse some of yesterday's charm into a new building. This book presents fascinating garden buildings in all of the styles of America's architectural heritage. If you're looking for a gazebo or pool house to match your period home, this is the book to start with.

Book Description
No longer just a bland square of pressure-treated lumber nailed to the back of the house, decks have taken on new shapes, surfaces, and levels. And patios have evolved from dull slabs of poured concrete to encompass a wide range of forms and materials - from warm brick to chic bluestone to casual gravel. Taunton's Deck and Patio Idea Book is a photographic exploration of the possibilities for these spaces, and the features that define them, including railings, built-ins, and overhead structures. Hundreds of photos depict the full spectrum of styles and sizes, from the simple wraparound deck, to the curved, multilevel redwood deck with outdoor kitchen; from the small brick patio to an elaborate series of terraced patios with stone walls.

this book just didnt pan out for the money. I have a fencing company in B.C. Canada and was hoping to find some great American ideas. It only has drawings of unfeasble ideas.
Fences: Authentic Details for Design and Restoration.......2001-11-08
I am a Landscape Designer interested in historical architecture in the New England Area. The entire series of books by Peter Joel Harrison should be in every designer's library. They are an excellent source for restoration work, and a valuable tool when discussing ideas with clients. Anyone interested in beautiful garden details will be inspired by the wonderful drawings.
I purchase the original release of the fence and pavement books several years ago, and I now have copies of the updated issue. Updating to the newer editions is well worth it.

Garden Houses and Privies.......2007-09-17
Excellent collection of privies constructed from 1700 to 1875. The author has done his research and while the detailed drawings are the main focus, the text is interesting. I wish there were more of it as the subject is a bit off the beaten path. The book is a great resource for homeowners, architects or builders really interested in incorporating accurate historical elements in residential construction.

Book Description
One of the oldest and most versatile building materials available, brick is used for period landscape design in walkways, entry pavements, courtyards, terraces, porticoes, steps, and fencewalls. With the increased interest in traditional landscape design, this book will appeal to anyone who is interested in restoring old brickwork or in creating new brickwork with a historic feel.

A great resource for designers and builders.......2001-08-08
Peter Joel Harrison provides a valuable service to architects, designers, preservationists, landscapers and homeowners by researching, recording and presenting the details of historic homes and gardens. I used Brick Pavement and Fence-Walls for ideas on some new garden walls in Richmond, Virginia. They look almost as elegant as Harrison's examples from James River plantations, and seem just right for their location.
Classic Manuscript of Brick Patterns.......2000-10-05
At first glance, the book resembles an ancient work by Palladio or other. The drawings are beautifully simple yet a bit coarse for today's standards. The book is made up mostly of patterns and elevations; text is limited to a 13-page index and a some explanations on tools and methods. Overall, the book is quite useful, but missing are the following: pictures, better diagrams, some data about the architect, etc.
Although the format is absolutely stunning (meant to resemble an old manuscript), this book is not for everyone. It should appeal to the designer, architect or contractor.
