Great photos but lacking detailed information. Wonderful, I think, if you're a beginner. I was hoping for more.

5 out of 5 stars The best bonsai book out there! .......2007-06-08

When I received a bonsai tree for mother's day, I was determined not to kill it like I had done with a previous bonsai. After researching 7 or 8 books at the library, and several more at local book stores, this one stood out as positively the best one out there. It offers full-color pictures of over 100 different species plus growing, watering, pruning, propagation, and other tips for each kind of tree. There are step-by-step instructions for growing bonsai from seeds, cuttings, and several other techniques such as grafting are included. This has been the most helpful book out there, and my trees, including several I bought, pruned, and potted myself, are flourishing! This is a wonderful book for any bonsai lover, or even just as a beautiful centerpiece for your library. Happy gardening!

A great way to see many different examples of well done bonsai. Excellent inspiration for beginners.

4 out of 5 stars The ALMOST Complete Book of Bonsai.......2007-04-27

I'm new to the bonsai world, and had read some material online for a quick introduction. Now I was ready for more details, which is why I ordered this book.

It is an excellent book, with step-by-step descriptions and accompanying pictures, which are large and high-resolution. The book is great for education as well as inspiration. It covers everything from the history, to starting your own bonsai from scratch, to maintaining it. It also has an extensive compendium of trees and shrubs.

The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars was that there were a couple of (what I thought were basic) things I was looking for that didn't appear in the book, i.e. information I came across online that I was hoping to get more detailed information and pictures on. I would give it a 4.5 if I could, because it's still a great book.

TIP: If you buy this book, don't buy Bonsai (101 Essential Tips). I bought both, and was disappointed to see they are the same book, only Bonsai (101 Essential Tips)
is an abridged version of this book. They are published in the US by Abbeville Press and in London by DK.

5 out of 5 stars Big Book in a Small Package.......2007-08-10

Excellent Bonsai book, I was amazed at the wealth of information in this book. It is better than many books 5x it's size and 10x it's weight. Very practical, it even comes with some species specific tips. Excellent illustrations. Not everything in Bonsai has to be expensive... this proves it! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Introductory Book.......2007-07-10

This is a great book just to let you know exactly what you are getting into. It shares a little bit of knowledge in many areas of bonsai. for 5 bucks, you cant lose

4 out of 5 stars A great reference and beginner book.......2007-04-27

This is an excellent book, with step-by-step instructions and descriptive pictures. It covers many topics from bonsai history, to starting your own bonsai from scratch, to maintaining it.

TIP: If you buy this book, don't buy The Complete Book of Bonsai. I bought both, and was disappointed to see they are the same book, only this one is an abridged version of The Complete Book of Bonsai. They are published in the US by Abbeville Press and in London by DK.

4 out of 5 stars It's a tip-book.......2006-12-18

This book provides most of the basic knowledge that you'll need to know. Sometimes you'll ask yourself a question that's a little more in-depth than this book spans, so just remember it's a tip-book and not a full fledged encyclopedia. For the price this is a very good book, the pictures are great and the tips are well thought out and span much of the bonsai hobby. Near the end of the book there are even suggested species for different types of bonsai styles. The tips are easy to remember and categorized well.

4 out of 5 stars Very good ready reference.......2005-10-08

Very good handy reference for someone more or less familiar with bomsai techniques. Highly recommended.

    Book Description

With their delicate foliage, seasonal color changes, and intricate pattern of branching, Japanese maples are among the most popular and suitable plants for bonsai design. In this long-awaited book, internationally renowned expert Peter Adams discusses both the specific horticultural needs of Japanese maples as bonsai subjects and illustrates proven techniques for creating and maintaining beautiful specimens. Although aimed at an audience that has some familiarity with bonsai techniques, the book deliberately shows a mix of bonsai at different stages in their training, so that less experienced enthusiasts can gain new ideas and inspiration from trees that are "works in progress." Much more than a mere "how-to" book, Bonsai with Japanese Maples is a forthright attempt to look at bonsai as art objects and to critique and assess them from an artist's perspective.

Great detailed instructions on growing, training and styling bonsai maple trees. Excellent pictures and graphics. He covers several different techniques, some I had never seen discussed anywhere else. Good discussion of the general cultural conditions specific to maples. Suitable for any experience level.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect product for bonsai interested maple lovers.......2007-01-22

Bonsai with Japanese Maples by Peter Adams has all you will ever need to know about maples in bonsai. Excellent colour photos, techniques are explained in adequate depth and it is well worth the price, I paid shipping to Australia just for this product. The only issue of concern is that one should read a basic bonsai book for a few clarifications on wording, that is to say it is written for an intermediate-bonsai audience.

5 out of 5 stars After all these years.......2007-01-05

I first saw this book as a bonsai student but it was already out of print. After years of searching, and seeing prices over $150, I am really happy to see it in re-print. It is the seminal Japanese maple book with many ideas that can be used for any deciduous tree. I strongly recommend it for anyone doing bonsai.

Wow! This is what a Bonsai book should look like! The photos are superb. The story on each tree is very helpful I didn't even mind that they were in the back. I could more of this type of book because the photos were high enough quality to be able to see forms. Anyone interested in seeing quality trees should own this.

    4 out of 5 stars A very good book.......2005-07-19

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ON THE ART OF BONSAI.......2004-03-11

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________

Please believe me about this book when I say, if you can at all afford it and if you share the insatiable love for this particular art that I have, it will unequivocally be worth every penny. The trees are manicured by the greatest Japanese bonsai masters in the world and the color reproductions are utterly superb. If you do get it or have a chance to look at it, go to plate no. 21 and feast your eyes. Though I realize I'm being very subjective here, this Hinoki Cypress, in my opinion, epitomizes the art and, indeed, the very purpose of bonsai. The narrative reads, "The more one looks at it, the more one's spirit feels purified, as though one were breathing the air of the remote mountains" . . . Amen . . . I just wish I could see it in person, but this is definately the next best thing.

(Really all of the trees in this book are that way and the inspiration and enjoyment I derive from looking at them is hard to explain)

Also contained is a wealth of written information. The contents read: Preface by John Yoshio Naka (the premier bonsai master and teacher of America); Foreword: Men and Trees by Hideo Aragaki; The History of Bonsai by Hideo Marushima - subdivided into - The Beginnings and General Trends, The Kamakura and Muromachi Periods, The Edo Period, and From Meiji to the Present; Appreciation and Styles; Bonsai Within the Japanese Tradition; Notes to the Plates; and a List of Bonsai by Type. Some of the reproductions are in black and white, but the vast majority are in color.

I also recommend this book if you're merely into the appreciation of beautiful things in nature or if you have a love for botany or an affinity for gardening. Whatever the reason, you really can't go wrong with this gorgeous book. Can you tell I like it?

Incredible masterpieces of Bonsai, most many hundreds of years old, are displayed in exquisite high-resolution photographs. This book is well worth the money for those seeking to study the world's finest examples of this living art form. An well-written and insightful historical survey is included.

    Book Description

In The Secret Techniques of Bonsai, the author of the groundbreaking Bonsai with American Trees teams up with his son to offer not only the basics of creating perfect bonsai, but also secret techniques they've developed over years of careful work and observation. For example, readers will learn such tricks as: - Making a cutting for a new bonsai in winter, while the plant still stores its winter nutrients, then wrapping and freezing the cutting until sprint, at which time it can be planted and will thrive; - Trimming branches in such as way as to eliminate swelling and scars; - The proper use of tools to perfect bonsai work; - And much, much more. The Kawasumis provide detailed, easy-to-follow information about growing bonsai from seedlings or beginner plants; expert advice on shaping, pruning, training, grafting and repotting the trees; and new techniques for using tools. And although the Kawasumi family is world-renowned for their bonsai tool design, their instructions allow gardeners to improvise with other readily-accessible bonsai, gardening or even simple workshop tools. Step-by-step photographs accompany the text. Masakumi Kawasumi III, the first qualified tree doctor for bonsai in Japan, contributes his unique insights to make this an invaluable resource for beginners and experiences enthusiasts alike.

This is a great little book for the beginner because it explains everything simply but thoroughly.

    5 out of 5 stars A well-organized, helpful start.......2007-08-29

In short, my opinion is that this is an excellent book if you are serious about bonsai and would like to get started, or to complement your knowledge from other books.

Before I purchased this book, I checked out several books from my local library. Some books seem to show many pictures of finished bonsai without really getting into details and I feel as if I still don't have the knowledge to even start on a bonsai. This book is a bit more helpful with step-by-step pictures from repotting to pruning, diagrams of undesirable branches, and methods of propagation.

There is a lot of information in this book that I read in this book that other books brush by, but I found helpful to me. Without a doubt, it is important to read different books because each author has their own views on certain issues.

Other books that you might want to look into are "Bonsai (101 Essential Tips)" by Harry Tomlinson and "The Bonsai Workshop" by Herb Gustafson.

This is a fine work on Advanced Techniques for the Bonsai enthusiast, in particular giving full particulars on specialty tools and pruning shears in Bonsai Culture. It is kind of surprising the great tips one can get, from just the one paragraph tips that the authors son added after his father death. Very concise and precise is a great summary for this book.

This is one of the Bonsai books that is worth having. Very informative. Great pictures and well written

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed Beginner.......2007-07-05

Both reviews here and in various Bonsai forums around the internet led me to choose this as my first bonsai book. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed with the book. Here's a few reasons why:
    - there are "lessons" from various bonsai artists around the world ... oddly, there are none from any Japanese artists. Granted it wasn't the Japanese that started it, but there's a reason that practically all bonsai terms are in Japanese, and not Chinese, English, or Vietnamese.
    - there is a limited index, but there is no glossary, and terms are used without prior reference. A simple diagram of tree anatomy would be interesting.
    - there is a lot of varied focus on advanced techniques (shari, jin), but little information on basic things like how to thicken trunks or how to reduce leaf size.
    - I found the tree reference section fairly limited. Granted, Coussins is Scottish, and he does cover the basics. But it would have been nice to see reference to some of the alternatives - especially for those like me who live in the Southern Hemisphere and/or the tropics.
    - I thought the book poorly organized and felt really incoherent. For example, he talks about the suitability of various trees for different styles, but this is before he discusses the various traditional styles. There are other examples, but I can't remember them at the moment.
    - Most of the pictures were of excellent quality, while some looked like poor quality colour printouts. There were however, a couple of photos which I marveled that they got into print - one because it has a very strong lens flare, and the other because the colours were not aligned properly. Furthermore, some pictures were repeated or simply didn't match the caption. In one place, a tree was made a centerfold, which really detracted from the photo, as the main trunk was hidden in the binding. Maybe it's not Mr. Coussins' fault, but with this book, Sterling's reputation has become tarnished, for me.
    - There was some good information on pots, which I really looked forward to as a professional potter trained in Japan, but the section was not especially helpful as it seemed more like a "here's my collection, isn't it great?". Some of this material also seemed like it would fit better in a magazine than in a book. I also thought that many of the pots were unattractive, or inappropriate for the trees they held - but to be fair, that's largely personal taste.

Well, I think that about sums it up. Hope this was helpful.

While this book has a lot of great information about bonsai and good photos the editing of the photos make it hard to follow the progress of the trees in many cases. The photos seem to be out of order and they are shown in reverse negative so the trees are first on the right side of the pot then on the left side in the sequence. I still appreciate the volume of work and the effort to bring this to print. I just wish the editor liked the subject enough to care about the finished book. I would not recommed this book to the beginner or anyone who doesn't understand basic photography.

    5 out of 5 stars A Thousand pictures tells a great story.......2007-01-20

Superbly written with, what I believe to be, over a thousand images, this is the most comprehensively photographically intensive Bonsai Book in the world. Craig Coussins has written a number of very popular Bonsai Books and his books are indeed unlike most others. It's not about him but rather about Bonsai, Bonsai techniques, other teachers' demonstrations and that is why I love this book. Craig Coussins has traveled all over the globe teaching Bonsai and he has asked his many friends to share the platform of this book with him.
What you get is a very interesting assortment of wonderful Bonsai Masters showing you what it is that they do well. Clearly a lot of work has gone into this book and the breadth of knowledge in this book is simply vast. It's not too technical which is a relief but a book written with passion, presented with gusto and read with love. His last book started this broad attitude to discovering knowledge but if it was not for the author I doubt that many of us would have had the chance to meet so many wonderful teachers.
I am sure that Mr. Coussins has very little Ego or we not have seen such a publication. He is clearly an ardent promoter of other Bonsai Masters while being one himself. Now that really is refreshing. Visit the masters from Singapore, South Africa, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, America and Canada through Craig Coussins photography of stunning bonsai and landscapes from all these and so many more countries where you can find Bonsai. I love it. I visited his website and that was another revelation. I loved that too.

On the surface this book seems to have 600 photos of trees but it repeats toward the back many of the same trees over and over. Also I hope you can read what appears to be Dutch because the first 19 pages are in that language and then the rest of the book is English! Definately a book for the dilatante or coffee table casual reader.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful as well as essential.......2007-01-07

This is a visually beautiful book that is even more valuable for its contents. A must have if you want to be inspired by beautifully photographed examples of classic trees, along with guidelines for how to begin to create trees in those style. You need to have this book if for no other reason than for the inspiration that it offers.

I actually bought this book as a gift along with the various items needed in the growning of a bonsai. The book was amazing with beautiful pictures and detailed instructions for growing a bonsai from the underground - up. Great deal for the money. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Un libro excelente - An excellent book.......2004-04-15

5 out of 5 stars Classical Treatment of a Classical Art.......2002-03-13

David Prescott's treatment of bonsai is highly recommended. The Bonsai Handbook is a fine example of how bonsai should be presented. It depicts both young trees and fine specimens. It makes bonsai approachable to the beginner as well as creates intrigue for the advanced collector. The plates are clear and finely photographed. Illustrations are well executed and helpful. The text is well written, although, at times, a bit complex. The author thoroughly descibes the art, science, and technique. He includes excellent information concerning tools, pots and general horticultural practices. As a bonsai artist and horticultural botanist, I find this book to be a great value and superior to many bonsai books presently in-print.

I question only minor elements: the use of cut-paste on pruning wounds. One photograph (p.104)is mislabeled (Larix larcina should be Thuja occidentalis).
