Very useful for new/infrequent user.......2006-03-09
The Complete Table Saw Book is useful for beginners and for those who have basic experience but have not been doing precision cutting. I found it helpful in setting things up and doing some semi-precise things. I expect to get a lot more out of it in the next few months as I get into more detailed projects.
The Kindest Cut of All.......2004-07-25
For me, buying a new table saw is not only a cause for celebration, but an opportunity to shuffle through the shelves to find a book about my new toy. This one struck my eye - mostly because it was thicker than the others, was well laid out and seemed to cover all the salient points. Possibly not the best criteria in the world, but they have stood me in good stead for a long time now.
For the most part, my initial assessment was accurate. The editor Tom Carpenter, has gone out of his way to maintain a solid, plainspoken approach to the subject matter, with a great number of illustrations and photographs. I can honestly say that there are enough ideas, pointers, and explanations to greatly enhance what you get for what is often the most expensive piece of equipment in the shop.
Chapters cover Basics, Tune-up & Maintenance, Chosing Saw Blades, Basic Cuts, Joinery Techniques, Sawing Accessories, and Essential Jigs. That covers the first 160 pages. The second section, which is about the same size, is devoted to some information about Woodworking With Sheet Goods and a collection of ten projects.
This latter section, while useful, is not up to the same level of quality is the first part. Not that it's shabbily done, but that the projects, which range from a bookshelf to an entertainment center, are a bit clunky looking. They are training projects rather than works of art. As such there is a good deal of explanation to help the budding sawyer.
Excellent resource and the new woodworker.......2004-06-24
Written primarily for the beginning to intermediate table saw user "The Complete Table Saw Book" provides thorough coverage of the art of using a table saw. The first part of the book examines the table saw itself and the coverage is excellent. Starting with an education on the various parts of the table saw it progresses through different types, blades, and functions. Next comes a thorough section on table saw maintenance and how to select a used table saw. The analysis of what to look for and how to determine the condition of a used saw is very detailed and well illustrated.
The next section covers basic cuts, joinery techniques, sawing accessories and basic jigs. One of the things that I really liked about the book is the detailed information on making your own jigs. Making the cuts to create a specific joining method is fine but it can be a pain to do several of them in a row by hand. So, he not only teaches how to make the cuts to make the join but also teaches how to make a jig so that it can be used to make the cuts quicker and easier. This shows that the author not only knows his joining techniques but also has the real life knowledge of how professional woodworkers actually do it. The last section of the book contains several projects you can make using your table saw. These projects include various cabinets, a play table and chairs, and an entertainment center.
"The Complete Table Saw Book" is an excellent reference that I can highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn about table saws and how to use them for everything from basic cutting to cabinetry. Filled with illustrations so you can easily understand everything in it, you can't go wrong with this book.

Great refresher for the novice woodworker.......2007-01-31
I used to like woodworking when I was in middle and high school, but I haven't done it since then.
This book walks through a lot of good information on woodworking and also includes plans for around 40 projects. The book is easy to read and accessible to all skill levels.
If you are new to woodworking or haven't done it in a while, I would highly recommend getting this book.
Outstanding Book.......2006-01-31
I am new into woodworking and this book is the best intro to woodworking I have seen. This is outstanding.
The second half includes doezens of plans for different wood projects. Although I don't plan on making any of these, it gives a great insight into how to build different things.
Anyway, this is highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2005-01-03
I just got this book a few days ago, and I've had a hard time putting it down. There are lots of full-color pictures, with thorough descriptions of almost every aspect of woodworking. I've already learned a lot about different types of wood, how to make several kinds of cuts with several kinds of tools (including suggestions for what to do even though I don't have a large selection of power tools), and have some projects picked out to start as soon as I can get the lumber! It is a very thorough book, unlike several others I looked through at my local bookstore. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in woodworking! It is both fun and informative. Almost half of this substantial book is general background information and instruction, including a detailed glossary, and the rest is a good selection of detailed, well-illustrated plans.
Enjoy! Go make sawdust.
The Not Quite Complete Book of..........2004-12-25
I've been hesitant to review this book because, despite its title it is by no means a 'complete' book, and yet it is well written, and what it does it does well. It is well written, and covers many of the important subjects - Setting Up Shop, Designing Projects, Introduction to Wood, Joints, Finishes, etc. And it provides a host of projects suitable to the beginner. It's hard to fault what it does do, but there are several problems with what it doesn't do.
First and foremost of these gaps is that the book is entirely power tool oriented. Given that a woodworker rapidly gets surrounded by a host of machines, it never hurts to spend time on saws, planes, and the other hand tools that are part of good woodworking. Good hand tools are berely cheaper than machine tools, and selecting the right ones is one key to achieving top-grade results.
The book flies too high to provide important detail on the tools that it does cover. Power saws, planers, drill presses and anything else require knowledge in order to be used safely and successfully. And to make the right choices when purchasing. This book would serve best the beginner who has access to a full shop, not one who is in the process of putting a shop together.
The projects are very straightforward - too simple in some cases to keep the attention of someone who wants to attain levels of artistry. There is no effort to rank the projects by complexity, or connect the skills required to section of the book. This can trap a beginner into a task that takes experience to complete. I'm also informed that some of the shopping lists are incorrect, so make a point of checking before buying. Nothing is more irritating than having something become scrap because you followed the directions.
So be warned that this book is of the greatest value t someone who is both a complete beginner and has access to a full shop. Access to a competent woodsmith wouldn't hurt either. If you fit in that niche the this could be a satisfactory purchase. If not look about you. Several of Taunton Press's efforts may be more useful to you.
Excellent.......2004-09-22
The book is divided in 2, the first 1/3 talks about tools, wood, joinery, etc. It's a great reference, and I find myself going back to it for reference.
The last 2/3 of the book are projects. There are many varied projects in the book. Some are too hard for a beginner, some are too easy. You're liable to find something you can do, and you'll learn a lot in the build.

inspiring designs.......2007-02-25
I'm a woodturner who likes to decorate the bowls I make. This book has given me several ideas that I've used successfully. I've gotten several copies for members of my woodturning club and one copy for the club library. We're always looking for new ways to enhance the simple wooden bowl and this book provides many useful ideas. Highly recommended.

a good sorce of information to get you started on makeing dolls
What I like is she has a few techniques to try. I think this book is very good for some one who knows nothing about makeing dolls whos interested in learning.
cranky reader with attitude.......2002-04-11
I was intensely irked by this book. The descriptions looked good on the page, but the actual directions were vague and lost me at several crucial junctures. Some of the dolls are nice to look at, but others are just coarse. It feels like someone wanted to cash in on some percieved dollmaking thing, and couldn't stop nattering. There are many books on separate topics from this book - cloth dolls are admirably covered by Eloise Piper and Susanna Oroyan, art dolls are all in Susanna Oroyan's several books, play dolls are in Miriam Gourley and Jodie Davis' various books.
Skip this one, and check out some other books that actually cover the topic better.
Very Disappointed.......2000-07-05
I bought this book with high expectations, but was very disappointed. The directions were vague and sometimes impossible to understand for the one doll I attempted. Although this admittedly covers many techniques, and the pictures of the dolls can be inspiring, the technical writing of directions leaves much to be desired. Check it out at the library if you want to look at the pictures. There are much better books out there.

great step by step doll making. easy to follow. good for any one who wants to learn how to make dolls.
Book Description
The step-by-step photographic guide to knots, plaits, mats and toggles for both practical and decorative uses.
Here is the ultimate knot book. Usually the difficulty in learning to tie knots is that the demonstrator is facing you and the procedure is therefore being shown back-to-front. Here the reader can see the bights and tucks of each stage of each knot as if he or she were tying it, making the entire process explicitly clear.
The book demonstrates, stage by stage and in 323 photographs, the tying of ninety-five knots, hitches, plaits, bends, rope and wire splices, sennits and decorative ropework mats, covering all the basics that yachtsmen or other outdoor sports enthusiasts need to be familiar with, and at the same time acknowledging the artistry of the Turk's Head, crown knots and ocean mats. The nature of rope and its lay are explained in the introduction to a book that will enable the tiro to become competent quickly and old hands to explain their expertise, be it during long winter evenings or as a pastime in the cockpit. Here, in fifty-one lessons, is knotting without tears - a happy combination of instruction and entertainment.

The Complete Book of Knots and Ropework.......2006-03-09
Very good book on knots. Lots of pictures to explain how they are made. I would recommend this book.
Dangerous Knots!.......2005-04-06
Like another reviewer, I am dismayed by the inclusion of faulty and potentially life-threatening knots. The Carrick Bend is shown two ways. The first way is not a true carrick bend and is actually said to be one of the worst knots known (re Ashley Book of Knots, pg 263 knot # 1445). The only knots worthy in this book are the decorative knots (don't trust the practical knots).
Dangerous.......2000-07-15
Along with an underwhelming selection of knots, bends, and hitches, it includes a dangerous knot described by the author as the "Binder Turn" and doesn't mention that it doesn't hold and is unreliable. This alone makes this book a liability and not an asset. Note to author: The reason that bend is "lesser known" is because it is garbage.
Excellent opportunity for novice and experienced knot-makers.......1998-10-08
As a Scoutmaster, it is important to me to have the perfect knot for every occasion. In our Troop I have initiated a Knot-tying award that the Scouts can earn called the Order of the Knot. This book, which I keep as a reference, allows the Scouts to find new knots and practice them using the many photographs and very clear and understandable text. I have also found the information about decorative rope work interesting to try myself, and have found that it keeps me one step ahead of the Scouts, always "raising the bar" in their knot-tying education. I believe that there will always be opportunities to use the useful information in this book, and it will start the Scouts on a lifetime appreciation of this creative and useful skill. Mr. Fry has gone a long way toward opening a new vista for anyone who believes that rope can be fun and attractive, as well as useful!

A complete book on miniatures - quality product.......2004-01-12
The book is full of all sorts of ideas, though it was small on "found" objects for furniture making. As I am new to miniatures, this book had all sorts of ideas for the novice to the master craftsman. Of course the book hawks back to the 70's and the color of pictures reflect this...the ideas were still innovative and creative. Great detail to every aspect of the dollhouse, including lighting, room arrangements and period pieces. I look forward to making the beautiful furniture featured in this "old school" book.
Book Description
Excellent reproduction of extremely rare catalog, originally distributed by important Grand Rapids, Michigan manufacturer of fine Mission-style furniture. Unusual pen-and-ink drawings depict 188 pieces, among them a large-arm rocker of bolted construction, fold-down tables and desks, bookcases with leaded glass doors, library and octagonal tables, chairs, settees, more. Captions detail woods, construction, measurements, finishes and prices.

Dover's mission furniture catalogs.......2000-04-15
While Charles Limbert is less well known than the Stickley brothers, some of his furniture was, to the European eye, even better. Sadly, the line drawings of the original catalog are extremely ugly (see nos 79 and 80 which are reproduced as photographs on the cover, you would scarcely recognise them!). I did use this to build a glazed bookcase (no 306), which must be some sort of a recommendation, for I haven't used any of the other catalogs yet. And the book is very cheap!

A Great Reference.......2005-06-06
The Author, Tera Leigh, does a fantastic job "breaking down" decorative painting. The pictures and descriptions are fantastic. If you are contemplating starting decorative painting or just need a great reference, this is for you. Everything is broken down step by step and the diagrams, demos, and descriptions cannot be beat!
Create professional quality results.......2002-07-07
Tera Leigh's Complete Book Of Decorative Painting (1581800622 ...) tells how to use color basics, brushes, and techniques to create professional quality results in crafts, home decoration, and projects. From lettering and faux finishes to brush techniques and antiquing options, this uses a reference and question/answer format along with color photos to encourage easy experimentation.
Fabulous, from Start to Faux-Finish!.......2002-03-11
Ms. Leigh's book, unlike so many others entitled 'complete,' is the genuine article, and comprehensively surveys the many styles and techniques used in creating decorative paint effects for craft. Whether you are a complete beginner (like myself) or an experienced artist, this is the only resource book on the subject you will need. Beautifully illustrated and written in Ms. Leigh's informed and engaging style, The Complete Book of Decorative Painting is as enjoyable a read as it is a valuable guide to painting. Each technique is illustrated with step-by-step instructions (including technique tips such as how to hold the brush and recommended types of paint that many other publications overlook), an honest evaluation and rating of the skill required for each (so the novice painter can select projects more likely to produce satisfactory results), and interesting details on the origins and historical development of individual styles. If you get the chance to see Ms. Leigh in person, as I recently did, do so. She is as engaging in person as she is in print. Long a Martha Stewart wannabe, I was genuinely surprised as how simple some of these techniques actually are, and found Ms. Leigh's instructions clear, comprehensive and easy to follow. I recommend this book without reservation to anyone interested in decorative painting.
The finest book of its kind I have reviewed.......2002-01-22
This book is the finest book of its kind I have ever reviewed. It is a step-by-step guide to decorative painting that is easy to read and follow. This book is a must for your reference library of decorative painting materials. With this book you have a master teacher at your fingertips. The photography and detail is outstanding and shows the care and thoughtfulness that went into the completion of this work of art. The color-coded pages make it easy to find and follow illustrations you require; and I agree with the comments on the back of the book by Priscilla Hauser and Donna Dewberry.
A must-have book for decorative artists.......2001-12-31
This book is truly deserving of the word "complete" in its title. Novice and experienced decorative artists alike will benefit from the wealth of information presented. I'm sure it will become one of the most-often used books on my shelf.
