Customer Reviews:
If you only buy one gardening book, buy this one.......2007-09-17
I have been gardening for more than fifty years and have acquired a library of hundreds of gardening books. If I had to sacrifice all my books but one, this is the book I'd keep. It is amazingly concise yet informative, the best book of all for a beginning gardener and an excellent overview and review for experienced ones. And it is amazingly affordable, perhaps because it sticks with excellent black-and-white line drawings instead of expensive but often useless full color photographs. The only criticism I have is that the sources appendix for commercial suppliers of seeds, plants and equipment is hopelessly out of date and nearly useless--but that's to be expected given the 1988 date of publication and the constantly changing repertoire of companies, etc. that make such lists even a couple of years old outdated. Perhaps bound books should omit these lists altogether because they become obsolete so rapidly.
This Book Is Like A Old Friend.......2007-06-08
I bought The Garden Primer back in the 1980's when I first caught the gardening bug. Over the years I have added many garden books to my library, but this seems to ALWAYS be the one I turn to for quick general information. I have bought copies for two friends and am buying another one right now. I would be lost without this book, and keep all sorts of added information and plant tags stuffed between the pages. Its an old friend that is always there with the right answer!!!
TIMELESS BOOK.......2007-05-26
I bought this book in 1988 when it was just published. Here it is, 2007, and I still reach for it whenever I need to refer to plant maintenance. I have a container garden, so most of my plants are houseplants. This book does contain information on the most common houseplants that exist, and goes over their description and maintenance in a straightforward manner. Today I will be going to my best friend's house, because she has a garden, but she is not an experienced gardener. This book will be traveling with me, and together, we will "work her garden." As a matter of fact, I am going to gift my friend with a copy of this book.
Single most handy book on gardening.......2006-12-19
Having discovered gardening about four years ago, I have been buying books on this subject, and about nature generally, with a certain abandon that others, less charitably disposed, might say "... buying with the abandon of a man possessed." Among the thirty or so titles that I have amassed since then, and another twenty books or thereabouts, bought in garage sales and from public library overstocks, I like Barbara's book the best when I want a quick overview and advice on a gardening issue. But this is more than just a practical "go to" book. I have spent several pleasant hours with the "Garden Primer" on the patio under the shade of a lovely oak in summer and this winter, by the woodstove, reading the chapters as one would Gertrude Jekyll's or Amy Stewart's insightful and opionated garden essays. Barbara's style is less assertive than either woman's; she writes with insight and a gentle wit, much like a well-informed, good humored friend. Witness her remarks on weeds, for example. I have two copies: one by the stove and the other in the greenhouse, well-thumbed and annotated. The illustrations are splendid, the book design has Workman Publishing's unmistakable look, and, come to think of it, I liked the garden gate on the cover so much that I am having one made just like it to add some definition to the kitchen garden. And, now to Home Depot to buy the woood...
An exceptional work.......2006-10-24
Gardening books ... sigh.
The number of gardening opinions that conflict with or contradict each other usually equals the number of gardening books you have in your library. Sometimes, plus -- I own a book on "easy roses," bought on the cheap somewhere long forgotten, that manages to contradict itself on nearly every page. I thought it a great value -- so much confusion offered within one volume!
Somehow, Ms. Damrosch's book offers an exception to that rule, and is the guide my wife and I rely on most. It is never out of date, always reliably practical.
Sound advice delivered in a civilized and clear manner. You'll wish you lived down the road from her, just to lean across the fence to chat occasionally.
We heartily recommend this book, even if you think you've gardened long enough to be above a primer.

Book Description
Every gardener loves perennials. Buy them and plant them, and most will flourish and even expand year after year. But in addition to reliability, perennials offer gardeners a wonderful opportunity to make a stunning visual statement in their home landscapes--if you know how to combine and arrange them. In The Perennial Gardener's Design Primer, Stephanie Cohen and Nancy Ondra, two top garden writers and teachers, offer fun, organized, and--most important--attainable advice on how to create gorgeous gardens using these beloved plants.
Cohen and Ondra walk the gardener step-by-step through the process of creating new gardens, as well as of bringing new life to gardens that have lost their luster. They explain how to pick perennials that suit the site by making the most of plant color, shape, size, and texture and how to create eye-catching plant combinations. Beautiful illustrations accompany the new garden plans, and stunning photographs capture how Cohen and Ondra have redesigned their own gardens. Throughout the book a lively dialogue between Cohen and Ondra encourages readers to experiment and to create their own satisfying designs.
The authors also offer down-to-earth design solutions for 20 specific types of gardens, including everything from a minimum maintenance garden to a more complex container garden, from planting a formal border to indulging in the controlled chaos of a cottage garden.
Whether you are breaking ground for a new garden, or revitalizing an existing bed, The Perennial Gardener's Design Primer can help every gardener achieve great results--year after year.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!.......2005-12-13
After seeing this book recommended as one of the year's best by "Fine Gardening" and seeing it as the #3 selection on Amazon . Com for bestsellers I bought the book. Both authors have been in the horticulture field for a combination of over 45 years and it shows. I Googled them. Stephanie Cohen has won some very prestigious awards from both professional groups and garden groups. Her co-author ,
Nancy Ondra, worked as a gardening editor as well as writing numerous top selling books. I liked there use of the newest and latest perennials. I liked the authenticity of using real gardens and the befores and afters. The photos are great. I liked the time-saving tips. The chart of flowers on the back of the book is a winner. However, the best thing about this book is the humor-I love it! Hurrah for a gardening book that shows real people wrote it!
Very busy.............2005-12-12
I bought a half dozen new garden books for myself for winter reading, and including THE PERENNIAL GARDENER'S DESIGN PRIMER by Cohen and Johnson. I have felt I got my money's worth with the others, but found myself disappointed with this book. In time, I may come to appreciate it more, but if I was a new gardener, I would find it overwhelming. Too often, when we are filled with knowledge, we are tempted to share it, and too often, others cannot hear, let alone digest it. This book appears to be one of those efforts where everything but the kitchen sink was tossed in. To say these gals are knowledgeable is an understatement. I am surprised the book made it past the editor's desk. Undoubtedly, she fell asleep.
Oh there are some great photos by Rob Cardillo. For me, the best shot is the boot of a station wagon filled with plants. But the authors soon tell the reader that admiring this scene is a "no-no" How often have you gone nuts at the nursery and filled your car with plants then stood and appreciated the arrangement you made? When you got the plants home and planted them, did they look so nice the next year? The authors suggest that planning your garden on the fly can lead to disaster, and well it might, but I am of the "organic" school and I believe you can move plants if you don't like the arrangement at a later date. These gals are into control big time, however. They want you to draw the design (or better...hire a designer), and then follow your design to the letter. They even designed a "cottage garden" if you can believe that, although it comes out looking like knot garden to my eye. If I did what they suggest I would tie myself in knots. The best arrangements I have "created" are serendipitous choices nature made using the seeds tossed off by my perennials and accidental juxtapositions of plants from seeds dropped by the birds.
The next time you are tempted to undertake garden design, check this book out of the library. You will soon be singing, `Tis a joy to be simple.....
Great Design Manual.......2005-11-18
I have purchased many Garden design books. I want something to just give me an idea and Ill go from there. This book does just that. The color ideas, what to plant with what. Has detailed sketched designs as well as many photographs of actual flower beds.
The quick reference Planning Chart has to be one of my favorite things about the book.
Would I buy it again? yes, I think I would
Great book!.......2005-10-17
I am a Master Gardener, and I love this book. The design ideas are very helpful, there are beautiful color photos and interesting sidebars throughout. I'm reading it cover to cover, not only using it as a reference book.
Love it!.......2005-09-05
Haven't really had much time to read this, but I DID "paw through" it, and it looks even better than expected!

A lot of words - not much inspiration.......2002-08-16
I was quite disappointed with this book. I hoped for more to look at and less to read in a garden design book. It is more of a text book than a book for inspiration. If you are ready to sit down and read the basics on garden design, then this is for you. If you are hoping for inspiration from looking at photos of beautiful gardens, then look elsewhere. There are only 8 photos - before and after photos of the author's own garden.
The perfect beginners design book.......1999-03-08
This book delivers exactly what it promises in clear language addressed to the novice garden designer. Without becoming dogmatic, the author takes the reader step by step through the principles of design. Of my many design books, this is the one I will loan to friends and give as a house warming gift.

Book Description
NOTE: New paperback edition includes COLOR photos.
In 'An American Cutting Garden' Suzanne McIntire describes how to plan a cutting garden, choose suitable plants, keep the garden in good order, and harvest a bountiful crop--all with charm and humor. Using both common and botanical names, she discusses in depth a wide variety of herbaceous perennials, biennials, annuals, and bulbs. McIntire includes information on topics such as the length of stems one might expect from the cutting garden, how many plants are needed of any one kind, when and how to sow seed outdoors, the heat-hardiness of plants, and strategies for coping with the effects of hot summers and cold winters. This new paperback edition includes color photos.
Customer Reviews:
Cutting Gardens by Your Best Friend Who You Never Met.......2006-02-12
So many garden books so little time! Yet take time for McIntire's hands on common sense. McIntire has spent 14 years experimenting and learning. It's as if your friend had decided to help you get started. And she can write. No matter where you are gardening, McIntire's got tips to get you started and to increase your expertise if you have already begun. If you are a real novice get a copy of the American Horticultural Society A to Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants (ISBN 8789419432) which has all the pictures of all the plants. But, if you want to learn what to plant under what conditions and how to succeed no matter how small, how shaded, how unfavorable your conditions might be, McIntire will, with writing which approaches the garden writing greats in style, lead you in the right direction. Skill is not the secret. But McIntire will provide you with the skills she has developed and the love for the process of gardening that nurtures every gardener, new or old. Best of all she will not send you out to buy 18 irises at $18.00 each. You can start with packets of seed. She follows in the footsteps of Henry Mitchel and Elenor Perenyi. Yet she provides simple access. Any latin or common name can be found in her Index of Plants. If you wonder how to coordinate various plants so that you have things in bloom over the season, there is a Sequence of Bloom for all the plants mentioned. Now the paperback has 28 color pictures (buy the A to Z). Gardening is much more than the photos in books and catalogues. We don't have Vita Sackville West's gardeners. We don't live at White Flower Farm. We have a small plot of mediocre soil and hope. Suzanne McIntire will provide you with both the knowledge and the intangible sprit to produce a cutting garden with flowers you will love and cherish. Try it. Try it. You will see!
Good for First Timers.......2005-12-11
Sensibly organized, this book was a terrific guide for a new grower like me. Though I've long been a gardening fan, I've rarely grown flowers for cutting and never with a plan. This helped make it managable and fun.
The new paperback has color pictures!.......2005-02-11
The new paperback has 28 new color photos with loads of different flowers in them, all identified in the captions and mentioned in the text!
Wealth of wonderful information, but . . ........2004-08-04
NO pictures! Not for a novice, like me, who needs pictures to see what the actual plant / flowers look like in a garden. I wish that had been made clear before I purchased the book.
An American Cutting Garden.......2002-09-23
Finally a book that helps me navigate through the garden with a bit of information that is useful.I had great success using this text as a tool to prepare my beds for spring and summer. My garden looked beautiful. I experimented with new plants well.

Book Description
Gardening wisdom blossoms from the pages of this delightful and instructive how-to book for the beginning gardener, a perfect gift for homeowners. First Garden was written by renowned columnist, socialite, and lifelong gardener C.Z. Guest in 1975 to provide advice and information to those who would like to develop green thumbs of their own. In her clear, straightforward manner, C.Z. walks the reader through the process of starting a garden, from sowing seeds and planting bulbs to landscaping with shrubs and trees to enjoying flowers inside and out-all with an eye to keeping it simple. Additional information is provided in the form of charts on pruning trees and roses, yearly planting schedules, winter protection methods, and bulb depth, all accompanied by Cecil Beaton's delightful and copious illustrations.
In 1975, C.Z. Guest, an accomplished sportswoman, was injured in a riding accident. While she lay recovering, friends called constantly to ask her advice on tending gardens. C.Z. decided to write a clear and concise gardening primer that would enable any beginner to know the satisfaction of working in the garden. First Garden has long been out of print. Demand from the collector's market for her timeless text and Beaton's classic illustrations prompted C.Z. to suggest republishing her book, and the result is this lovingly produced tribute to the joys of nature that will show anyone how to create a first garden. C.Z. has provided a new introduction to the book. The charmingly packaged facsimile is the perfect housewarming gift and a perennially popular present.

Book Description
The most comprehensive, entertaining, down-to-earth one-volume gardening reference ever, and highly praised:
"Barbara Damrosch delivers the goods."—Chicago Tribune
"Best of the crop."—House Beautiful
"Barbara Damrosch's writing has the snap of a good snowpea and the spice of an old rose."—The Seattle Times/Post Intelligencer
"Covers just about everything you could think of and then some." — The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"An extraordinarily comprehensive guide." — The San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle
"Takes your soaring visions of garden splendor and plants them firmly in the ground."—The Toronto Star
Now the beloved classic is revised front-to-back. The new edition has gone 100% organic, which in Barbara Damrosch's hands also means completely accessible. It reflects the latest research on plants, soils, tools, and techniques. There is updated and expanded information on planning a garden, recommended plants, and best tools. Ecological issues are addressed much more extensively, covering lawn alternatives, the benefits of native species, wildlife-friendly gardens, and how to avoid harmful invasive species. More attention is paid to plants appropriate to the South, Southwest, and West Coast, while cold-climate gardeners are given detailed advice on how to extend the growing season. Simply put, the book is a richer and fuller compendium than ever before, with more text, more illustrations and garden plans, expanded plant lists, and gardener's resources. But Barbara Damrosch's core of practical, creative ideas and friendly style remain—she is still an "old-fashioned dirt gardener" at heart.

Martha Stewart's Gardening: Month by Month

Amazon.com
Margaret Roach, garden editor for Martha Stewart Living magazine, has produced a particularly appealing addition to the philosophical genre of gardening books. Roach takes a holistic view of the garden: "Neither my garden books nor my garden is the stuff that art is made of, a fact for which I am only partly apologetic. My garden is where I can be myself--perhaps the only place besides the pay-by-the-hour couch that invites me to be so, in fact."
The book's basic conceit--that a year in the garden parallels the six seasons of life: conception, birth, youth, adulthood, senescence, and death/afterlife--makes for interesting reading, and the practical aspect is aided by a good index at the end. Fortunately, the text, while personal and charming, doesn't descend too far into leafy navel-gazing; Roach can be quite hard-headed and instructive on the matter of caning raspberries, making a garden pond, dividing irises, growing your own salad greens. Gardeners who have plenty of room and a bit of puttering time themselves will delight in Roach's relaxed approach. --Barrie Trinkle

Beautiful in every way.......2007-07-17
This book was like a box of the most exquisite chocolates. I wanted to devour it in one sitting but I paced myself, just reading a little at a time. It was truly a joy to read and look at the lovely pictures. All I can say is I want more, both of her writing and philosophy and of pictures of her garden. I agree that this book doesn't really tell you how to garden but it shows you why to garden.
a joy to read.......2004-07-07
This book won't teach you HOW to garden--not really, anyway--but it's a must-have if you've ever enjoyed any of the Martha Stewart Living articles about Roach's gardens, or, lately, her own editorial letters. She has a way of making me feel that if she did it, I can do it myself. Her humility in the face of her garden and of nature itself is evidenced in the title "A Way to Garden"--she doesn't presume to know THE way. The book is wonderfully written and beautifully photographed--I'll never tire of leafing through it.
A perfect guide to the spiritual lives of gardens........1998-08-25
This is a beautifully written and exquisitely photographed guide to both the spiritual as well as physical lives of gardens and their gardeners. I can think of no book like it -- either in its fine writing or in its brave scope. The writer lays bare her thoughts and feelings about the cycles of life while strategically leading us through the gardening year with good, solid gardening knowledge. This can be read in all seasons in all zones, at every stage of life. Truly, this is the way to garden.

A unique combination of a month-by-month garden journal, an almanac, and a garden hints book in one.
In Organic Gardening magazine, the popular "Gardener to Gardener" column is a forum for gardeners across the country to reveal their most ingenious ideas to one another. Now, this unique format is combined with the best of a practical record-keeping tool and a garden almanac, offering readers a gardening book unlike any other on the market.
The focus of Gardener to Gardener is on natural, organic pest control-the most common problems among gardeners. Each month, readers are given specific projects and activities, which are complimented by garden-tested advice from both the readers and writers of Organic Gardening magazine. Journal pages allow gardeners to chart the progress of their developing gardens. Every region of the country is addressed, and readers are given fully-illustrated, what-to-do-in-the-garden instructions for their particular region. Timed for December, when gardeners begin planning for the growing season, Gardener to Gardener will help and inspire them to create their own organic masterpieces.

Book Description
Stone brings a timeless elegance to interior and exterior design. Stone is both stylish and classic. It brings solid tradition to contemporary settings and adds a flair of minimalism to traditional surroundings. An elemental substance that brings beauty and permanence wherever it is used, stone is at home everywhere.
Charles McRaven, a dedicated stonemason for more than 50 years, brings his practical experience and deep respect for the material to The Stone Primer, the essential guide for homeowners interested in adding stone to any setting, indoors or out. Here is everything readers will want to consider when beginning a do-it-yourself project, hiring a professional stonemason to carry out a difficult design, or simply planning and dreaming in stone.
Know the properties of common types of stone. Choose, collect, and move the right stones for the project. Place them in perfect layers, make them fit with the proper tools, and learn the basics of drystacking and mortaring. McRaven covers it all in detailed how-to chapters, embellished with anecdotes, historical tidbits, and profiles of noted masons.
Following the basic techniques are dozens of projects to browse for inspiration or use as practical guidance. Designs for the home include everything from structural masonry (stone foundations, columns, and chimneys) to interior accents (fireplaces, hearths, floors, and countertops). Landscaping uses include flagstone pathways and patios, several kinds of walls, water features, gazebos, bridges, and even stone sheds and houses. Full-color photographs and illustrations provide how-to sequences for the budding stonemason and inspirational images for anyone interested in bringing the weight and permanence of stone to the home.
