5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Book On Trilliums: Up-to-Date and Accurate.......2007-03-20

I'm a wildflower photographer and live near the middle of trillium heaven: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Identification of wildflowers can be a tricky proposition--especially for trilliums which are often very similar and prone to hybridization and mutation. Actually, I'm in an area where botanists are at least weekly finding NEW species of wildflowers and other plants so it is always possible the trilliums I photographed were a new species.

The Trilliums book by Messrs. Case is perhaps the most extensive treatise I've seen on that genus. I'd previously used the Albert Radford book, Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas, as my "bible" for those hard-to-classifiy wildflowers. Case has shown the error of the Radford treatment for many trillium species.

If you are a serious student of trilliums then I highly recommend this very readable book. You'll not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Bible for Trillium gardeners.......2001-09-06

The book has three main sections. The first section is an introduction which contains 6 pages about Trillium history, native geography, and plant relatives. 25 pages about the anatomy, biology, and ecology of Trillium. 13 pages on horticulture and propagation. 7 pages on conservation and bioethics.

The second section addresses Trillium taxonomy. It contains 6 pages on taxonomy, 13 pages on a taxonomic key to species, and 160 pages describing 38 species of Trilliums. Each species is fully described by common name, scientific name, key anatomy characteristic, flowering season, habitat, geographic distribution (including a map of distribution), varieties and forms.

The third section contains extra species information, glossary, and index. There are 22 pages about 5 Asiatic species, 8 page Glossary, 6 page Bibliography, and a 5 page Index by species.
In addition, there are 78 full color photographs. Photography is crisp and clear. Each species is presented in one or more large images.

This book is a classic! The writing is genius! It is informative, timely, and absolutely fascinating. Every detail you could imagine is revealed about this interesting collecting of plants. Whether your interest is as a botanist, horticulturalist, conservationist, or perennial gardener, you will find the information to be complete and exceptionally well written.

The book is a monograph on Trillium. It is the single key source of information on this genus. It is such a great blend of botany, horticulture, and inspired writing, that all other genus specific books will have to be measured against this work. I really loved the way the authors brought together all these diverse facts into one very readable text.

If you love Trillium and want to learn more about this beautiful plant - buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars A long-overdue treatment of a complex, beautiful genus........1997-09-30

After almost half a century of exploration, study, and propagation, Fred and Roberta Case have produced a masterpiece. "Trilliums" offers a thouough discussion of the spring wildflowers variously known as 'wake-robin', 'sweet Beth' and 'Trinity Lily'. The book isn't perfect-the range maps look slightly tacky and may be inaccurate in a few cases-but the text is excellent and the color photographs are outstanding. Professionals and amateurs will find this book very satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Turns you in every direction.......2001-10-22

Wow... It's hard to rate this one book when there is a whole
series. You'll recognize lots of Julian May in these books. You
are taken into one direction then totally blown away in another.
The series starts out kinda slow but then, watch out! I highly
recommend the whole series.

I was captivated to the very end. This is one of the books that
you just find hard to put down.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not classic.......2001-05-01

This book is mostly well-written and has an involving storyline, but it just doesn't have that certain something that makes a book classic. Also, I was disappointed at how the relationship between Haramis and Orogastus was portrayed; there was a lot of potential for great writing there that was never realized.

I'm hoping Black Trillium will be better, as it was the original Trillium book, written by three authors.

5 out of 5 stars for fantasy fans.......2000-08-24

Sky Trillium continues the Trilliumseries nicely. The other four book and this one all have well developed characters, great plots, and a little twist in them to keep you interested. You don't have to but I would recommend that you read the other books before this one.

All the trillium books jump around from the view points of the main characters so no matter what kind of character you like one these will be your fav. espesilly since they are all very differnt in personality.

    Book Description

The creation of three of fantasy's stellar talents, the Trillium Saga is a tour de force of magic, mystery, and romance.  Now best-selling author Andre Norton picks up the story she began with Julian May and Marion Zimmer Bradley--a story that continues with a perilous quest into darkness. . .Once the famed triplet princess who defeated the evil sorcerer Orogastus, Kadiya ventures forth into the choked swamp lands of Ruewena to seek her own destiny among the Oddlings she once led in battle.  Armed with her mystical three-eyed sword, she reaches the lost city of the Vanished Ones and discovers a strange race of dream-catchers, called Hassitti, whose visions bring chilling warning of a lethal plague that sows the land with death.  Now Kadiya, with only three comparisons to aid her, journeys into the Thorny Hell, realm of the cannibalistic saurian Skritek, to stop the carrier of the evil disease.  Here they discover a portal leading to a universe of awesome darkness--an entranceway to a horror that threatens the very existence of The World Of The Three Moons.

2 out of 5 stars The book was okay, not spectacular, but okay........2001-10-18

The story was relatively interesting, if a bit dry. The biggest problem I had with it was the lack of continuity with the rest of the series.

This book chronologically takes place a short time after Black Trillium. That would be fine if May and Norton had discussed it, but the lines of communication apparently failed.

If May knew how Norton was to conclude her story, she must have ignored it, because the character traits displayed by Kadiyah in Golden Trillium were not displayed by her in Blood Trillium.

Overall, I prefer the Kadiyah of Golden Trillium, to her through the eyes of May in Blood Trillium. I wish that something of that had been carried on.

The World of Three Moons did not seem the same world as that in the earlier works, or the later works. The appearance of the Sidonna didn't match the reference to them in the later works. It also did not have the strength of The Trillium due to the limited role of Haramis (maybe a paragraph), and the non-appearance of Anigel.

I do not think this is the best of Norton's work. If you are interested in the ongoing storyline of the World of Three Moons, you can safely ignore this book and miss none of that storyline. If you are an ANdre Norton fan, try to find it second hand.

    2 out of 5 stars Readable, but I wish I'd known. . ........2000-06-06

I have to admit I've read better books than this. It was better than Black Trillium, which I found practically nauseating, but I read through Golden Trillium only because I kept thinking the plot would pick up a little. It never did-- at least not until the very end, where a novel's worth of conflict is squeezed into about two chapters.

If you managed to plow your way through Golden Trillium and/or Black Trillium, read Marion Zimmer Bradley's Lady of the Trillium--it's infinitely better. If you haven't read Golden Trillium yet, do yourself a favor and check it out of the library, so you won't feel cheated.

    4 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......1999-09-19

I liked this book a lot, I think It can easily be one of the best of the saga, the fact that Kadiya was the only triplet in the story troubled me a little but a part from that it was great!

4 out of 5 stars This Book was very Intriguing........1999-04-29

I loved this book...in fact, it is the book that took me the shortest time to read, in all the the series. But somehow it is the only one of the series so far, that is anticlimactic. I found No discrenpancies. However the story could have had a lot more to offer. Maybe more emphasis on the guy from Varm...more interaction from the 2 forces prior to the last 20 pages.....that is the only thing that disapponted me about the book

    1 out of 5 stars Muddy.......1998-09-15

I loved Black Trillium, and found Blood Trillium a worthy, if darker, sequel, but reading Golden Trillium only reveals what a thorough editing job May and Bradley must have done on Norton's text while writing the first novel. The story is vague, and the language impenetrable. I forced myself to finish it, but didn't pick up much. For Norton fans only.

5 out of 5 stars The T-206 Honus Wagner Caper.......2000-10-04

This fast paced and very readable book is sure to catch the interest of baseball fans and sports card collectors, as well as would-be detectives. It's a good length for even the reluctant reader. Set in a small city on the Mississippi River, the story has been well researched. The author obviously has a good knowledge of sports card collecting, as well as a keen understanding of kids! The characters in the story are well developed and diverse. As a read aloud, the book sparked the interest of the whole class . I've been using this book in my fifth grade classroom for several years now, and it's alwqys a favorite. The students invariably ask for other books by Ms. Amann.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for baseball fans and baseball card collectors.......2000-10-04

I initially read this book because I knew the author, and the story takes place in my hometown. After reading the first couple of chapters, I was eager to find out what was going to happen. It was exciting! I also enjoyed learning more about baseball cards and the value of collecting them. This is an excellent book for children (and their parents) who want a good mystery about something that they are interested in (baseball and baseball cards). A great birthday or Christmas gift!

    5 out of 5 stars A homerun of a book!.......2000-10-03

Even if you know little or nothing about baseball or baseball card collecting, you will enjoy this book. I read this book with my twelve year old son and we were both caught up in the story and the mystery. The characters and setting come alive for young people; my son couldn't wait to find out what would happen. There is enough suspense to keep an adult interested so it is a great story to share at bedtime or while riding in the car. I highly recommend this book for boys and girls in late elementary school.

5 out of 5 stars Mystery in LaCrosse.......2000-09-30

The T206 Honus Wagner Caper is an exciting mystery. It takes place in LaCrosse, Wi. where I live. The scenes in the baseball card shop and at the boathouse are my favorites. The young boys in the story sure get themselves into a lot trouble. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense, with a flavor of baseball mixed in.

Ruwenda is a pleasant, peaceful land-but the magic of its guardian, the Archimage Binah, is waning.  Binah must pass along her protectorship to the triplet princess of Ruwenda.  She bestows upon the infant girls the power of the rare and mystical Black Trillium-badge of the royal house, symbol of an ancient magic.  While the sisters blossom into beautiful young women, neighboring Labornok use a dark magician to sunder Binah's protection. As invaders pour into Ruwenda, the Archimage orders the princesses to flee-and changes them to search for three magical talismans which when brought together will be their only chance to regain their kingdom and free its people.   Each must accomplish her task separately-and to succeed, each must also confront and conquer the limits of her own soul.

1 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This book was not in the able to be finished category. How did this talent come up with such ordinary junk. Too many cooks in this case, I think.

Time after time when the characters did something I would think 'what the hell is up with that'. Not really a good sign. Many useless princesses.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing Effort.......2005-06-30

I couldn't get past the prologue. I'm sure this novel improves but read this first line: "In the Eighth Hundred after those of Ruwenda came to rule over the swamp wilderness called the Mazy Mire (though not completely, for they never mastered the intractable Oddlings),..." and also on the first page: "the bog-trotting little Nyssomu and the closely related but more aloof Uisgu (quite nonhuman and therefore clearly designed by Nature to serve their betters)...". When attempting to begin reading any novel (especially the first page), it is essential that the novelist writes with clarity; just look at the names you would have to constantly read throughout this book! Check out the tribes' names: Wyvilo; Glismak; Skritek (also called Drowners) and Vespi! There are just too many ridiculous names to bother with, and this doesn't include place names. I just didn't care after three pages.

Sadly, I had been looking for this book for 6 months ( I didn't have the courage to buy it on Amazon) - and for good reason. I hope this review prevents any perspective buyer from making a mistake in buying this amatuerish garbage.

5 out of 5 stars Great read !.......2003-01-16

This book is truly what introduced me to these superb authors .It's definately one of the best books ever written .Magical ,interesting ,fast moving,it has all the qualities to a good book .I adored the creatures they invented ,the Oddlings ,the tree varts ,the Glismak ,the Skritek ,and everything else .They develope a wondreful feeling that I've barely felt before . Here is the plot :Three princesses are born in Ruwenda :Haramis ,smart and leader -like and heir to the throne ,Kadiya ,firey tempered but an amazing huntress, and Anigel, sweet ,timid ,and loving .Each of them is bestowed with the amulet of the black trillium by the Archmage Binah .When the princesses are young women ,the neighboring country of Labornok invades.Haramis ,Kadiya ,and Anigel are split up and sent to look for the magical talismans that will save their country :The Three Winged Circle ,the Three Lobed Burning Eye ,and the Three Headed Monster .But if the sorcerer you uses the king of Labornok as a puppet finds them first ,they will surely be destroyed.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Genius.......2002-09-12

I loved this book. It has a consistency rarely found in fantasy stories, creating a realistic world with believable characters, boundaries, and the vivid writing style invokes images in ones head that are hard to forget. I read this book a couple of years ago and just thought about it recently, but couldnt for the life of me remember what it was called! I finally found it! Hooray! Anyone who likes fantasy should *read it now*!

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth It........2001-12-31

The trio authors Marion Zimmer Bradley, Julian May, and Andre Norton have created a world so enchanting that I had to read non-stop from beginning to end. Action began from the first page as the triplet sisters are forced to split up and embark on their own journeys, and conquer themselves.

The story is fun, beleivable, and full of mystery surrounding the ancient citizens of the planet, the vanished ones. It is fairly easy to read because the authors did not add too much description, or confusing topics, which often take away the pleasure of reading.

The charcters came to life for me because their personalities were so human. Also, although I am not a feminist, I enjoyed the fact that the main characters Kadiyah, Haramis, and Anigel are women, which is a good change from many other fantasy stories that have either men as the lead characters or super-strong and unrealistic women running around and beating everyone up, (*cough*Xena-wannabees*cough), excuse me.

Black Trillium has all the elements that make an excellent story. The only problem that I had with it is that the ending seemed to be a little slapped together because it was so short.
This is when all three sisters confront The bad guy, Orogastus, together for the first time. About two short chapters later, the story ends. This dosen't create any loose ends, but it does take some of the momentum that the story had built up.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars A Decent Read.......2005-04-23

Back before I knew what fantasy was, my mother got me this book from a second hand store--so this review is based on this book alone and not what came before it.

It starts out well and is actually quite interesting, but the book rapidly goes downhill from there. The plot focuses on how the Archmage Haramis prepares the young Mikayla as her future successor. Mikayla is an unwilling candidate, one who would much rather explore technology rather than learn spells, and her bond with her cousin Fiolon is a problematic one.

The book, unfortunately, is way too short to deal with anything other than the main scenes, resulting in a 'tell, not show' scenario. What makes it worse is the fact that each chapter literally skips years without the reader knowing...heck, each cut off skips years. One moment you'd be reading about a basically pointless scene and then the next you just catch a glimpse of, "But she's eighteen already!" when a couple of pages back she was only seventeen. It just feels so rushed that as much as I liked the character of Mikayla and especially Fiolon at first, I started to hate it.

I guess if you read the first few books this would be an okay wrap-up of Haramis and what happens to her afterwards, but the writing itself is bad. As a stand-alone, I wouldn't really recommend it, unless you were like me and had nothing else to do.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting tangent.......2005-04-23

I think what must have happened here is that Marion Bradley and Julian May had different ideas when it came to a sequel for Black Trillum.
And this IS a sequel to 'Black Trillium, not to the other two books in the series, Blood Trillium and Sky Trillium.
In terms of the direction the series takes I much prefer the direction taken in May's sequels rather that this one.

This book focuses on Haramis needing a replacement archimage, being old, and near the end of her days. She finds some of what she is looking for in a decsendant of Anigel, however she finds her work to be cut out for her in that Mikhayla has other ideas than becoming an traditional archimage.

This is a good book, well written, but the reason why I rated it 3 stars is because the other sequels written by May fit the original story more suitably and are, I think, better.
This is a good book to read if you are a fan of Bradley's work.

4 out of 5 stars Captivating, though quick, read.......2002-11-04

Having not read any of the Trillium series, I was a bit skeptical about being able to get something out of this book. However, as a fan of MZB, I took the chance and was not disappointed. Of particular fascination was the relationship between Mikayla and Fiolon, who share a special psychic bond with each other, and the struggle of each of them to assume their respective magical responsibilities. Definitely worth a read!

5 out of 5 stars Mikayla begins her unwanted life ..........2000-09-05

Mikayla begins her unwanted life as an Archimage when Haramis says that she's the next Archimage. Mikayla doesn't want it though ... she wants the life that she's had planned. To marry her best friend, Fiolon and live her life as a royal princess.

Mikayla's resistance makes Haramis' life harder. She wonders why Mikayla isn't glad for the training she is receiving; Haramis would have killed for a chance like what she's giving Mikayla.

Mikayla finally sees that Haramis is doing something good ... but now Mikayla's life is in danger. Will Haramis arrive in time and will Fiolon remain as loyal and loving as he ever has?

This is the first of the Trillium series I have read I enjoyed it very much. Even though a lot of reviews have not enjoyed this book I think it's worthwhile and a very good read!!!
