The many shades of white, beautifully complemented by the velvety verdure of evergreens and ivy, are a perfect choice for holiday trimmings--the decorations, the accents and accessories, the table settings. Glowing with candlelight and sparkling with sun-kissed snow, these pages are filled with glorious arrays of white and green. Noted designer Tricia Foley has a way with white: dozens of elegant little ornaments, a creamware-bedecked table, a frosty tree encrusted with crystal and silver decorations, an all-white gingerbread house, even a boxwood-swagged gauzy bed canopy. "Like a Currier and Ives print or a snow-capped New England steeple," Foley reminds us, "the image of the perfect white Christmas is firmly etched in our minds." Her visual feast shows how truly stunning holiday decor can be when planned in a symphony of whites. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Everyone knows that the best Christmas is a white Christmas-a traditional celebration with snow capping the eaves, a fire roaring in the fireplace, and a mistletoe ball hanging in the doorway. Tricia Foley, best-selling author of Having Tea, Linens and Lace, and The Natural Home, brings back the magic of the time-honored customs, along with her own white-on-white decorating style, to create the kind of Christmas that will make treasured memories for years to come.
With ideas for every room of the house, Foley shows how to borrow from the colors of nature in winter 'pure white and evergreen' to dress up the house for the holidays. She includes simple yet timeless suggestions for draping greens over the bed canopy, hanging all-white stockings of every size and fabric, lighting with votive candles, candelabra, and sconces, and wrapping with handmade papers and raffia ribbons. For entertaining, White Christmas presents the perfect Christmas tea, with snowy linens and homemade scones. Helpful tip boxes cover Christmas lore, favorite tales, and Christmas crafts, and a resource section provides useful lists of addresses, related books, and holiday songs.
For anyone who wants to make the most of the holidays, Tricia Foley's White Christmas is the ideal holiday decorating and entertaining companion.

Martha Stewart's Christmas remains a classic cooking and decorating guide for the Christmas season. The book can be viewed as an elaborate timeline for preparing for December 25--indeed, Martha claims the book was written and photographed in "real time" from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Day. Along the way, Martha teaches you how to make plum pudding, 24 different types of cookies, and a holiday party menu featuring cassoulet for 100. For Christmas Day dinner, a towering croquembouche is perhaps the finest culinary feature of the menu, which features roast ducklings with wild rice, chestnut, and cranberry dressing. Martha also provides tips on decorating trees, making ornaments, gift-wrapping papers, and making beautiful wreaths and topiaries. There's even advice on making up gift baskets of the cookies, conserves, and puddings that you've created yourself. Martha herself admits that "it's true, we did get carried away"--she creates an elaborate gingerbread mansion--but most of the recipes and crafts are easy to follow and produce great results. Martha Stewart's Christmas is a real gift. C.B. Delaney

Shallow book like the author.......2003-01-14
There are better Christmas books on decorating and entertaining.
The most beautiful christmas book!.......2002-12-17
I can see this book is not new. It is to me, and I find is very inpirational! I use it every year for Christmas, for getting the house ready, for baking, for decorating and setting the tables, for ideas on how to use my plates, bowls and dishes in different ways, for altering things I already own into new settings -
I do own a few of her C-mas books, this is by far the best one. If you celebrate this holiday - or just want to arrange a beautiful winter feast, you will not be sorry to own this book!(I use it as gifts for friends, and have already bought three..)
Lovely book.......2002-02-18
I loved the 'feel' of this book, very festive. The presentation is beautiful.
What disappointed me a little was that there was no pattern for the gingerbread mansion that was featured in the book, which was the main reason I bought it. It's a little too easy for me to just be told to 'use your imagination' and 'the possibilities are endless'. I expected more!
Other than that, it is a very nice addition to my book collection with timeless ideas and inspirations, or just to browse through when christmas season comes around.
Something for every ability and interest level.......2001-12-10
Yesterday I made Noel Nut Balls and the chocolate-dipped almond cookies for the fifth or sixth Christmas in a row, and chances are I'll make several of the other recipes before the end of the holidays. The cookie recipes are easy to follow, guaranteed to please and the cookies themselves can be frozen for weeks without any change in texture, appearance or flavor. However, I can't imagine many busy people whipping up the cassoulet or even the fruitcake unless they are experienced cooks who can confidently evaluate and execute rather expensive (in terms of ingredients) recipes.
The craft and gift ideas run the range from easy and very rewarding (such as making your own wrapping paper, which turns out to be a great activity to do with children-- and those gold and coppery designs look sensational under the tree) to the fantastical...like using a jeweller's drill to make holes in nuts for decorative purposes. Still, this is a book full of ideas for holiday activities and creations for people with the full range of abilities and available time and it really is enjoyable to read and to look through.
I am buying a second copy because the first has literally fallen apart. This is the second Martha Stewart book to have broken into pieces (Entertaining did, as well) and I do question the quality of binding.
The Most Useful Christmas Book I've Found.......2000-01-05
I adore Martha Stewart. She's a terrific teacher and this is absolutely the best Christmas "idea" book I've ever read. I love the recipes and photos. It's a book I will treasure and one I will use over and over again. Thank you, Martha!

I LOVED THIS BOOK! .......2005-12-03

Excellent Ornament Making Source!.......2006-01-25
COtM is a fabulous source of inspiration when it comes to making ornaments. The photos show each project in its final stage, a few have diagrams to show folding technique, and for those projects using a pattern, one is provided (although you'll have to enlarge at times). The projects are great for beginner and intermediate crafters as the directions mostly involve glue, ribbon, beads, glitter and paint. There are a few advanced projects but those mostly deal with oven and/or air dry clay. These are great rainy-day projects the whole family can enjoy because the instructions tell you all the items you will need and most are only 4 step processes. Finally, for those who feel their place is in a hardware store rather than a craft store, there are even projects for you! Various non-traditional elements are used to make some of the lovely ornaments too. Well worth a purchase.

A Pretty Good Book.......2002-01-04
This book has some really good ideas for special holiday touches throughout the home. It includes autumn decorating as well as Christmas. I used several of her ideas in my own home.
Simply Beautiful.......2000-12-16
I do not watch QVC and was not familiar with Valerie Parr Hill prior to buying the book. But, I bought it because I was so captivated by the great cover. The photos are beautiful and the ideas inspiring, yet simple. Do not let the Christmas tree on the cover fool you. The book takes you from Thanksgiving through the holiday season. A great little find to add to my book collection.

A Colonial Christmas.......2002-10-26
With the loss of Colonial Homes magazine, Christmas ideas with a American colonial theme are becoming rare. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation along with Libby Hodges Oliver and Mary Miley Theobald have created not only a historical account of early American celebrations, but a beautifully designed and photographed book. Decorating starts outside with simple wreaths and pine roping to more elaborate fruited creations. Inside the greenery continues along with ideas on table decorations, the Christmas feast and best way to spoil Christmas guests. Chapters cover candles to Christmas trees along with colonial revival and twenty first century interpretations. This book will be a welcome inspiration for anyone looking for Christmas ideas and traditions.
Have yourself a Williamsburg Christmas.......1999-12-28
Informative (and occasionally surprising!) text accompanied by exquisite photographs of the holiday decorating style known as Colonial Williamsburg.
The text is coordinated effectively with the photographs to which it refers, making this a helpful guide for those interested in recreating or adapting the patterns for their own decorations. Lists of fruits and greenery that are or are not historically valid as well as diagrams for constructing bases for fan-style and pyramid decorations are both practical and helpful. For those preferring merely to look rather than do, it's still a lovely holiday visit to Williamsburg.
Christmas in Williamsburg is beautiful.......1999-12-21
With its lively, readable text and beautiful photography, Williamsburg Christmas is a must have book for anyone who enjoys Colonial history and Williamsburg. It makes you want to make that visit to Williamsburg during the Christmas holidays.
Great Christmas Book for Decoration Ideas.......1999-12-04
You don't have to like Williamsburg to like this book. Decorations can be used in contemporary homes, colonial or traditional homes. Good thoughts on how traditions such as the first Christmas tree began. I am giving the book to family and friends. It makes a great Christmas present.

A reader from Minnesota.......2002-10-03
As the title of the book implies - this is a book about "finishing touches" and decorating for Christmas not a quilt book. In addition to Lynette's gifts as a quilt and fabric designer, she is also an accomplished gardener and decorator. This book reflects her insight and ability to put that all together. I use my copy as a "coffee table" book during the holidays.
I love Thimbleberries, but this one's a Stinker!.......2002-02-10
I am probably one of the world's biggest Thimbleberries/Lynette Jensen fans - I have made over 10 of her quilts and have several more in the works. I have five of her books and have enjoyed them all with one big exception - this one! It's just a bad rehash of photos from the "Christmas Cottage" book. No projects, no instructions, NOTHING! To make matters worse, all of the photos are taken in extreme close-up so there is no perspective on anything. Do youself a favor: spend your hard-earned money on one of the other worthwhile Thimbleberries books.
Book Description
Christmas Style is the first book to offer detailed advice on how to successfully decorate the space you have - whether a cottage, ranch house, condo, or mansion - in the most creative way for the Christmas season. Lavish custom photography showcases Christmas trees in many different settings - including the celebrity homes of Leeza Gibbons, Candice Bergen, and the Hilton Estate - decorated in a myriad of styles, from old-fashioned Victorian to over-the-top.

Whimsy, wacky and it is So Me!.......2007-02-13
I loved this book. I am far from the Traditional Christmas Country Gal. I am into everything full of color and over the top but my husband isn't. I took two ideas from this book this year and had a lot of fun yet kept it real for him. Everyone likes looking at it, I like copying some of the ideas. The maniquin, well my cousins have one. If I spend Christmas with them one year, I just might try that.
Christmas Inspirations!.......2006-11-12
This book is filled with useful and specific information on how to light a tree, highlight "feature" ornaments, make bows, and selecting the right tree. Yes, I agree with the other reviews, this book is over the top, especially the "12 Dames of Christmas." But, even those designs have carefully thought out color schemes that can serve as inspiration.
Pro's:
Excellent photos
Styles covered are: Traditional (very elegant & RELEVANT!!!), Victorian, White Winter Wonderland, Country, Jewel-toned Theme, Retro (great for kids!), and Tropical/Floral
Helpful tips & step-by-step photos
Con's:
1/3 of book dedicated to the 12 Dames, gawdy, but eye-candy to some
Debi & Bob, PLEASE WRITE A SEQUEL. YOUR FANS ARE CHOMPING AT THE BIT.
Nightmare on Christmas.......2006-08-15
Read the review carefully -- I didn't and I'm sorry. The Publisher's Weekly review called their designs "gaudy" and boy are they right. Who in the world would have a Christmas tree in their house with a full sized mannequin stuffed into the tree dressed to look like Joan Crawford or Marilyn Monroe? And get this -- in the Joan Crawford tree, they have swan ornaments which -- everyone will know when they see them -- represent Ms. Crawford's transformation from ugly duckling to swan. Or how about the Lucille Ball tree -- disembodied hands holding brushes sticking out of the branches. I won't even get into the Cher tree, because it scared me. These people need to be visted by the ghosts of Christmas and have their heads straightened out. Please don't judge Los Angeles by these people -- I've lived here all my life and have never seen anything like this. This is a true nightmare before Christmas!
If you love Christmas decs, you'll enjoy this book!.......2005-09-17
Amazing decorated trees with different themes. Very American and very O.T.T but great for putting you in the mood for Christmas. Wonderful photographs!
Christmas Style - Recommended Highly .......2005-09-09
I love my new Christmas Style book, it's a beautifully shown and explained how-to book.
They have created a wonderful display of natural and artificial tree decorating, from traditional to pop culture and year round variations, and a multitude of trimming styles!!
I enjoy it often, keeping it on my coffee table to pick up when I'm dreaming of Christmas decorating in the summer in TX. The touches of the celebrities makes for a charming insight to their personalties.
I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
Every December, it?s harder and harder to keep up with the Clauses. Consider the Wills home in Mendota Falls, Minnesota, where more than 150 candy canes light up the exterior of the house. Or Bull Run Park in Centerville, Virginia, which features 200 over-the-top holiday lights displays stretching over two miles. And down in Marble Falls, Texas, just about every house in town is a holiday lights extravaganza (including the place with a twirling lariat that spells out ?MERRY TEXMAS Y?ALL?) Okay, so maybe some holiday light shows get a little out of hand, but you have to appreciate the time, work, and effort (not to mention expense) that goes into installing 600,000 bulbs over a 50,000-square-foot property (as in the case of the Clot family of Pinecrest, Florida). And don?t forget the imagination and technical wizardry of homeowners who have created a school of dancing fish wearing Santa hats, or a garden of computer-controlled poinsettias that appear to grow out of the ground and blossom in glorious color, or illuminated toy trains that run on 700 feet of track.
HOLIDAY LIGHTS! is a high-wattage celebration of the wildest and most wonderful examples of a modern tradition. The 250 full-color photographs are spectacular, but don?t stop at the pictures. The accompanying essays reveal the titanic amount of hard work and dedication required to install these displays.
Make this Christmas one your family will remember forever by knitting Christmas stockings for the entire clan. The 19 fun, simple-to-follow patterns presented here make it easy for even first-time knitters to create beautiful stockings ? not to mention delightful knit and felt ornaments for the Christmas tree.
And Knit Christmas Stockings! is not only fun and easy to use, it?s also economical. With single-pattern prices from $3.50 to $9, a knitter buying 19 patterns could spend over $150! But with Knit Christmas Stockings! knitters get 19 great patterns for just $14.95.As with all the books in Storey?s die-cut Knit series, this book is written with the first-time knitter in mind. All knitting instructions are in plain English ? no esoteric terms or indecipherable abbreviations. And if a project calls for an unusual technique, the instructions are accompanied by detailed illustrations of the process.
Customer Reviews:
not worth the cost!.......2007-02-15
I was wanting advice and info on where to buy lights and stuff...this book did not have it! save your money!
DAZZLING AND EYE POPPING.......2004-11-17
Someone said the author belittled people in the book by calling them obsessive on the way they decorate their homes. I hate to say but the author is right. But not in a bad way. Author David Seldman provides some wonderful instructional tips and the photography is magnificent. I've looked at this book over and over again to get ideas for my own front yard.
Yes, you have to be a little obsessed when it comes to decking out your home with so many thousands of lights that the electric meter whizzes around like a top out of control. I know people like this...they begin their planning for their outdoor displays in the early fall, long before Halloween...even drawing layouts of various display items will go. I used to think it was a bit crazy until I started getting into larger displays. If you don't plan in advance you'll be sure to end up with something out of wack like having cords in the wrong place or needing more outlets.
It is obsessive but it's an obsessive love of the holidays. This book has some absolutely eye-popping displays and really gives more novice decorators like myself some fantastic ideas for my own home. I'm not going to buy a computer to control eveything, but you'll be awed by some of the elaborate displays of lights and technology that some people have.
Wonderful book!
Author is insulting.......2004-05-21
I was happy to find a book about my favorite thing- Christmas lights, and ordered it right away. When I settled down to read it, I didn't like the tone the author took in his writing. Most of his verbal descriptions of the people who like to go the extra mile to beautify their homes for the holidays were offensive. He called them kooky or nuts and belittled their efforts by making everyone sound "quirky" or "obsessive". It was obvious that he felt that lighting your house in an original way was stupid.
I am glad that someone focused an entire book on the beauty of Christmas lights and the talented and clever people who decorate with them, but I wish someone else had written the book! Buy it for the pictures, and ignore the critical text.
For what it is - a little gem.......2003-11-26
If you want something that will make you smile and shake your head in amazement and disbelief and you love a sparkly Christmas, this book is for you. Some of the decorations are beautiful, some staggering in scope and some just so much plain fun. From the ridiculous to the sublime, you can hardly get more entertainment value from the mere ten bucks or so you will pay for this book.
Holiday Lights! Awesome!!.......2003-11-07
