Book Description
When is the right time to shear a sheep? Is there a market for manure? What time of day is best to collect eggs? What is the correct way to milk a goat? What does a duck eat? Can a cow and a sheep share the same pasture? Which types of rabbits are easiest to raise?
The perfect book for anyone who has ever dreamed of having that little place in the country, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers tried-and-true, expert advice on raising healthy, happy, productive farm animals: chickens, geese, ducks, rabbits, goats, sheep, and dairy cows.
Each chapter focuses on a different animal, discussing the pros and cons of raising the animal, housing and land requirements, feeding guidelines, health concerns, and a schedule for routine care. Species that are easy to raise, hardy, and companionable are profiled. First-time farmers will discover simple, clear instructions for caring for animals throughout the year, as well as guidelines for processing barnyard products such as milk, wool, and eggs. Combining practical advice from real experts, easy-to-use checklists and charts, a seasonal care calendar, and detailed black-and-white illustrations, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers a comprehensive review of the ins and outs - the tribulations and triumphs - of living with and caring for a small barnyard.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2007-09-09
This book tells you everything you need to know for the novice to the experienced. Suggestions for those who want ornamental animals to the getting down to farming people. Pictures are great. Highly suggest this book!
great book!.......2007-08-10
This book works great and spells everything out very easily. Not the most comprehensive I am sure but I actually learned alot from it. I was mostly interested in chicken and sheep as well as ducks and geese. great book for a beginner like myself.
Excellent book, on various farm animals.......2007-08-08
This book is a wealth of knowledge! I own lots of books on raising ducks and chickens, and I have to say this book matches up well with all of my other books. Why is this impressive? Because the other books I'm comparing this book to are books that deal with only one type of animal (ducks, geese, chickens, exc). This book gives almost the same amount of detail as my other books plus it covers: Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle. If your going to raise three or more different forms of live stock as a hobby, this is the only book you will need. If your going to try your hand at commercial production than you will need other books to supplement this book. I gave this 4 stars because the chicken and duck sections were not quite a thorough as some of my other books I own (though it came amazingly close). This is a no brainer purchase for anyone raising three or more of the animals listed above. A must buy...
Best farm book yet.......2007-07-19
Have read lots of books in trying to get spun up on hobby farm life, and this by far takes the cake as number one animal 101. It is well presented, covers all the facts and includes diagrams and discriptions. Will recommend to others as first resource to start with.
it is what the title says!.......2007-07-05
if you've just moved somewhere with a little land and are thinking of adding a few farm-type animals to your yard, this is a great book. It will tell you the demands that each of these little furry/fluffy/downy creatures will make on you, your property, and your bank account! The author gives a great overview of each of the animals mentioned in the title. BUT once you actually purchase the critters, you'll probably need a book that gives more in-depth information, especially in the health area. A great book to help you make educated decisions about what to toss in your ark!!

Book Description
Your backyard can be the source of the best eggs and meat you've ever tasted. The answer is chickens--endearing birds that require but a modest outlay of time, space and food.As they learned to raise chickens, Gail and Rick Luttmann came to realize the need for a comprehensive but clear and nontechnical guide. Their book covers all the basics in a light and entertaining sytle, from housing and feeding through incubating, bringing up chicks, butchering, and raising chickens for show.Througout the book, the Luttmanns express their wonder at the personalities of chickens--the role of brash protector played by roosters, and the instinctive motherliness of the hens. Given some freedom and attention, these birds can become much more than the egg-and-meat machines of commercial hatcheries and broiler factories. Chickens provide backyard farmers with enjoyable pastime, as well as a supply of good food.
Customer Reviews:
practical.......2007-09-21
Good, practical information on a number of subjects related to raising chickens and problems one might encounter.
A great beginner's Chicken Book.......2007-08-23
This little paper back book is full of useful information. We checked it out from the libary so many times it started to fall apart. I figured if we are reading & needing it that much, it's time to buy the thing! It gives you information on raising chickens, culling, & housing. It is easy to read and understand. This book is a must read for any chicken beginner.
Great content...poor design.......2007-07-09
I learned a lot with this book, but the quality is awful. It looks like it has been poorly reproduced. The illustrations are not good at all. I wish they would redo this with quality typesetting and graphics.
Good book.......2007-05-28
This book is good for the beginner. However, I would strongly suggest having another reference in addition to this book. It was written in 1976, and some of the information is out of date (incubator temps and such). The strengths of this book are that it's easy to read, has a seperate chapter on roosters, and that they share thier own experiences and their own blunders. This book is a decent place to start, easy to read, and under a 150 pages. Not bad. I own "Keep Chickens" by Kilarski, "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens", and "Chickens" by Sue Weaver as well. Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens" by Gail Damerow is more complete and up to date, but it's also more time consuming to get the information. "Keep Chickens" by Kilarski and "Chickens" by Sue Weaver are more up to date versions of this book, and Sue Weavers book in my opinion is superior of the three. If I had it to do over again I would have bought Sue Weavers book for getting up to speed, and Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow for more in depth information after I read Weavers book. Trust me I've looked at a lot of chicken books, and done a lot of reading. This book is decent, and it will give some good information, and I'm not sorry I bought it. However, there are better books out there. Gail Damerow and Sue Weaver have superior products in my opinion.
Chickens in Backyard.......2007-01-16
This book contains nearly everything one needs to know about the successful raising of yard chickens.

Book Description
Bring your chickens home to roost in comfort and style! Whether you're keeping one hen in a small backyard or 1,000 hens in a large free-range pasture, you will find the perfect housing plan in this comprehensive handbook.
Author and farmer Judy Pangman combed the country to select these 45 plans for housing both laying hens and meat birds (chickens or turkeys). The coops range from fashionable backyard structures featured in the annual Seattle Tilth City Chickens Tour and the Mad City Chickens Tour in Madison, Wisconsin, to the large-scale, moveable structures Joel Salatin has fashioned for Polyface Farm in Virginia.
You'll also find plans for converting trailer frames, greenhouses, and backyard sheds; low-budget alternatives for working with found and recycled materials; and simple ways to make waterers, feeders, and nestboxes. A gallery of color photographs provides other creative ideas to get you going. With basic building skills, a little elbow grease, and this book of plans, you've got all you need to shelter your flock.
Customer Reviews:
No plans in this book! Just ideas.......2007-08-11
This book would have gotten 5/5 stars from me if it read, "Chicken Coops: 46 Building IDEAS/PICTURES for housing your flock." There are absolutely NO PLANS IN THIS BOOK!!! If your looking for with actual plans in it, try "Poultry House Construction, by Michael Roberts." That book is under a hundred pages and is a wealth of knowledge (with various plans in it). If your looking for great chicken coop IDEAS than this is your book. There are a lot of great ideas in this book, and if your good with planning and tools than this is all you need. As I said if the book supplemented the word Ideas instead of plans I would have given it five starts. This is a great book, it just has a misleading title. Sorry Ms. Pangman I can't give you 5 stars when your book doesn't live up to it's title.
Chicken Coops - 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock.......2007-07-26
Lately our garden has been over run with weeds and grasshoppers, I am planning to build a small coop to house and protect a few chickens, mostly for weed control, but a few eggs would be a good bonus. This book is full of ideas. I can use the ideas from many of the plans to design a coop to fit our needs. I recommend this book to any one who has a need for a small coop or a small area for chickens.
Not what the tittle implies.......2007-07-11
Should I have read the reviews, including that of the author... I would probably not have this book on my shelves.
The book is interesting and amusing to see how different people has built different Coops and Houses for their birds but if you are looking for (as I was) real plans and how to build kind of book... you should look somewhere else.
What I have learned... is to read reviews and don't take book titles literally.
Can't speak for book, just service.......2007-06-27
Since I ordered the book for a chicken-raising friend, I can't really speak for the book itself. It did take forever to get here though- several books I'd ordered through the marketplace came form various areas of the country days (or weeks) sooner!
Coffee table chicken coop book.......2007-04-23
I was aware that there were no building plans (based on other reviews), but I wasn't too worried because of I can make materials lists pretty easily from drawings. However, I was surprised that the drawings in this book have incorrect measurements (rather frustrating). This is a coffee table book, and even as that, it's not so exciting. There were really only a few designs that broke away from the square-box chicken coop idea. The best thing about this book is the presentation of the idea of keeping chickens as being an urban middle-class phenomenon. It was good for ideas, but it's not a keeper.

True inspiration.......2007-07-26
The stories in this book are true inspiration. I have decided to give it to my 20 year old granddaughter, as I feel this is the best gift I could possibly give to her.
My Opinion.......2007-05-18
No book touched my soul (pardon the pun) like this one did. I have read better books, however perhaps none more valuable. The story of the little so called crippled boy and the puppy in the dog store, WOW. The authors let us know to stop blaming everyone for our life. Our parents where probably average, SO WHAT! Get on with it. Many people overcome a tough childhood to become successful. This book is full of such stories. It awesome.

While the book is not bad, the authors will give you the irritating feeling that they have milked this cow for all it is worth. Where does it end? Chicken Soup for the Soup Lover's Soul? Chicken Soup for the Mountain Climbers Soul? Chicken Soup for the Amazon Reviewer's Soul???
Where there is a buck to be made on inspiration, the authors of the "Chicken Soup" series will sniff it out.

Could not put it down.
This is the type of book I would read and reread.

Customer Reviews:
Great Recovery Companion.......2006-05-17
This book inspires and encourages continued recovery. Highly recommended for those directly and indirectly involved with recovery.
Thoroughly enjoyed it!.......2005-02-22
Dear K, I love the book and I'm so glad you were published in it because otherwise I might not have read it. After 18 years of sobriety, I'm still inspired by an individual's story of addiction, the necessary desperation that leads to the first step, and their journey to recovery. Although it's the kind of book I might reread, when I'm finished I'll probably pass it on to someone that I think needs to read it and hope it keeps getting passed along until it's worn out. This book won't go out of style. PAP
Very encouraging book.......2005-02-09
I think you can't go wrong with this book. The stories are encouraging and uplifting which is what someone in recovery needs, in my opinion. I've even highlighted pages so that I can go back and re-read what really spoke to me. I'd recommend buying this book in heartbeat.
You can't go wrong........2004-12-15
What a wonderful collection of inspiring pieces from a broad section of the recovering community. Each story offers a glimpse at the challenges faced and how individuals reclaimed what was rightfully theirs - health, happiness and hope. I'd recommend it for anyone entering recovery as well as those who are already living a recovering lifestyle.
Disappointed.......2004-12-14
The Chicken Soup books have been a good read in the past. This one seemed to be the perfect Christmas gift for friends in recovery, so I purchased three copies (there were no reviews to assist my decision.) After reading some of the book, I quickly became disappointed. The stories seem to lack substance or the inspiration experienced in other Chicken Soup books. The stories described difficult events, but no insight as to how the individuals came to find peace and serenity. Basically it was, "I had this situation, and now I don't." In the future, I will wait until there are reviews to guide my purchases.

ASIN: 1592280137 |
Book Description
Chickens-why not? Tens of thousands of people in all areas of the country enjoy raising these birds, whether for food or companionship. You can, too, with this indispensable guide. Then again, you may want to read Living With Chickens just for the sheer joy of it.
Straightforward prose and dozens of clear, detailed illustrations gives any future chicken farmer the tools he needs to get started, from step-by-step instructions on building the coop to a brief background on chicken biology ("gizzard talk"); from hints on getting high-quality eggs from the hens, to methods for butchering. Vermonter Jay Rossier draws on his own experiences and those of his fellow poultrymen in discussing how to keep marauders from the chicken coop, the benefits of homemade grain versus commercial, and how to live (and sleep) with a rooster in your midst. Personal anecdotes, interesting facts, and lush, full-color photographs of the birds and their landscape round out this comprehensive book.
Customer Reviews:
coffee table book.......2007-09-21
The book has information about keeping chickens, but all the glossy pictures of chickens and the writing style made it seem like a coffee table book about chickens instead of a practical guide.
The best overall chicken book.......2007-07-05
This is by far the best overall chicken book.I tried Story's guide, wow was that boring and dry. This was very easy to read cover to cover. This will tell you everything about raising them from A-Z. The best part is there are pictures and examples. I would recommend getting Choosing and keeping Chickens by Chris Graham to get a more in depth view of each breed, size, personality and it has great pictures. As a beginner I found I needed both books.
Living with Chickens: Everything You Need to Know to Raise Your Own Backyard Flock.......2007-03-18
I have just finished reading this book. I loved it. It includes some general information and directions for finding out other needed information. In the back it includes hatchery and cooperative extension information for most states. It is full of wonderful pictures of the chickens doing their own thing. I feel that anyone that is not already raising chickens should at least read and enjoy this book. If you don't enjoy anything else about the book you will love the pictures and the stories that go along with them.
Nice book! Recommended highly.......2006-02-17
Friendly style, full of information, & tons of special, vivid photos-- I read this cover to cover in a day and really enjoyed it. A GREAT book for the person who is thinking about starting a small backyard flock. One of my favorites. (The layout is unique, too- engaging and easy to read.)
I would strongly recommend this book.
Great book for the beginning chicken owner!.......2005-05-30
I read this book cover-to-cover the first day and next morning that I got it from the library. Very clear and easy to understand even for a kid. The book is written with a touch of humor that makes it especially fun to read! There is BEAUTIFUL photography in this book. If you are thinking about getting chickens like I am, or already own them, you won't want to pass this book up! Happy Reading!

This is style that is not that hard and due to stovetop adaptation, one can have the healthy benefits as well as unique smokin' flavor. This aid and recipe collection will aid that immensely.
Styler was on FoodNetwork showing this off, caught my eye and appetite. He has great recipe breath here: even scrambled eggs and soups and salads, to what one typically associates with smoking: ribs, sausage, chicken, fish, etc. Favorites thus far include: Smoked Salmon Pate; Phyllo Pastry Tartletts with Smoked Shrimp and Spinach Filling; Turkey-Mushroom Barley Soup; Tea-Smoked Duck with Asian Slaw; Tea-Smoked Shrimp and Asparagus Stir-Fry.
Only way to make this even more exceptional and useful would be "sources" listing and color photos. The latter would certainly heighten the price.

Best Cookbook Ever!.......2006-03-10
From the catchy title and amusing quotes to the easy-to-follow recipes, this cookbook has been both highly informative and entertaining. Since I do not look forward to coming up with ideas for dinner, this book has been a real gift to me. It is so easy to pick up a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store. But now, rather than serve it with rice and canned green beans, my family is enjoying a variety of great, tasty chicken meals at lunch and dinner. I am grateful for the wonderful ideas contained in this book. My copy is on the kitchen counter at all times. I strongly recommend this book. You will not regret buying it!
Good food, fast!.......2006-02-20
This book answers the question: What can I fix real quick, and still serve a delicious, and healthy dinner? And have a minimal amount of cleanup afterwards?
Lauren Rae Brimmer answers all these questions, 125 times. Just get a rotisserie chicken, and you probably have the other ingredients on hand. Lunches, soups, appetizers, main dishes, and more.
I especially appreciate the detailed information in the back of the book concerning all manner of information that we need to know (such as "how long does it keep?").
My next question: When will Lauren focus her attention on another food basic, and share the results with us?
Delicious recipes that appeal to everyone........2004-08-26
I curled up last night with my new book to pick out some recipes, and promptly left for the grocery store. I made the eggplant parmesan and it was a big hit. I really love the way the book is organized. The recipes all sound delicious!!! Lauren, keep up the good work...
I will be telling all my "foodie" friends about this book and will show it off at my next cooking club dinner.
I'm reviewing my own book.......2004-06-04
Yes, I'm reviewing my own book, because I want everyone to know how Your Chicken is Cooked came to be and why it's a terrific book for busy families who want fast, healthy meals that taste terrific! I'm proud to report very positive feedback from customers, friends, and reviewers who have tried the recipes.
A career woman myself (though on hiatus since the birth of our daughter), I know what it's like to be exhausted from a full day of work and come home needing to put dinner on the table. You don't want to pay tons of money for take-out all the time, and you would feel better serving a home cooked and healthy meal.
Your Chicken is Cooked was an idea during my pregnancy that became a reality during my maternity leave (it actually took two years to become a book). I simply started my own publishing company and hired professionals as needed, and put together the book that I as a serious amateur cook wanted to buy, but seldom see from mainstream publishers.
Recipes aren't overly flashy, but the taste will impress your family and guests. Using cooked chicken, everything happens faster with less clean-up required. I also included a wealth of reference information about chicken, as well as entertaining snippets from famous chefs and personalities.
My strategy while creating the book (and even now) is to buy two rotisserie chickens at a time at my local warehouse club, eating the first one that evening, saving to other to make beautiful chicken "leftovers" that taste anything but leftover.
You also have the option to purchase a signed first edition from me as an Amazon Marketplace seller. These books make great gifts for you or a friend.
Thank you for trying, Your Chicken is Cooked!

Book Description
Family commentator and humorist Dr. Kevin Leman and human sexuality expert Kathy Flores Bell team up to write a book for parents on teaching their pubescent children (ages 8 to 14) about sex.
Customer Reviews:
Don't Let the Title Scare You!.......2007-06-08
This book is excellent! You don't even have to wait until your kids are older to read this book. The practical suggestions they give begin with pre school age children, and continue up until your kids are 16 and 17. I highly recommend this book as a must-read for any parent!!
Highly recommended.......2004-08-09
Family psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman and sexuality educator Kathy Flores Bell present A Chicken's Guide To Talking Turkey With Your Kids About Sex, a straightforward guide for parents and educators about teaching young people about the first period, first nocturnal emission, dating relationships, STDs, molestation, and much more. A Chicken's Guide To Talking Turkey With Your Kids About Sex offers useful advice in down-to-earth terms concerning what needs to be taught, how to build a bond of trust and support, and how to sound fully credible when promoting abstinence in a culture that is media-soaked with sexual imagery, as well as more basic tips concerning trials of puberty such as proper hair and skin care, oral hygiene, and more. Highly recommended.
Putting puberty education back where it belongs: the home.......2004-04-15
I have found Dr. Leman's books on childrearing very useful. Here he teams up with Kathy Bell to help parents build strong relationships with their "tweenagers" so they can effectivly pass on their own values. I especially like the straight talk to parents who fear being hypocrites because they misused their sexuality, and now want to tell their kids "don't do that!"
This book is about so much more than the typical "plumbing lesson." As a sex educator and a parent of seven, myself, I like the hands-on tools Kathy uses to illustrate the "plumbing" aspects, but especially the emotional aspects of sexuality. And she expand that focus to help parents discuss "neck up" issues. (Don't know what those are? Read the book.)
Don't rely on the school or the youth group to form your child's views on sex, marriage, and family life. Be a proactive parent. Read this book if you need a push in that direction. It even has an index of topics, so you can quickly find the pages that discuss what you need to talk about NOW.
I would have liked to have seen a little more on dealing with masturbation. The few pages that cover it don't emphasize enough it's connection to pornography and addidictive behaviors that can destroy relationships. Other than that, excellent, helpful book.

Book Description
When fresh eggs are needed for the kitchen, what could be better than going out to the back yard and collecting them, courtesy of home-bred chickens? Food simply doesn't come any fresher, and the good news is that keeping two or three chickens is quite easy. They don't require farmland or much special equipment, and today's modern chicken houses are designed so that anyone with even a little backyard space can keep chickens. The authors of this enlightening new book offer essential advice, provide the basic, easy-to-follow chicken-raising facts, and present their information in clear jargon-free text. Keeping Pet Chickens is arranged as a series of clearly-captioned pictorial spreads, each of which focuses on a particular topic of importance to chicken owners. Topics covered include pure breeds and hybrid chicken varieties, maintaining daily routines, catching and handling hens, keeping chickens in good health, and much more. Sidebars on every two-page spread present additional information and fascinating facts about chickens and chicken raising. Approximately 100 color photos.
