Most chapters are very good. My interest is painting--I found that several chapters were just excellent instruction and tips-others were OK. Worth the purchase price to me...
Digital Collage and Painting: Using Photoshop and Painter to Create Fine Art.......2006-11-25
This book was like reading a great novel, I couldn't put it down! The inspiration was excellent. The incorrect assumption of some that "digital" means "computer generated" is debunked in this excellent work which has lots of beautiful examples of many kinds of digital art (not just collage). There are lots of step by step tutorials that are helpful and tips for using the tools of PS and Painter to their best advantage.
It is not a beginners book however as Bloom assumes that the reader is familiar with PS and Painter. Still this might be the work that makes one REALLY want to do the work needed to become proficient in these programs.
Loved it more than any other work on this subject and I already have a shelf full!!!

Buyer Beware.......2006-11-11
Ok, firstly if you want a hands-on plenty of action book stay away from this one. Sure you get to see how other artist have created their work but if you read carefully there are gaps between getting from one stage to the next in some cases. Also a MAJOR dissapointment is you get no images to play with so you can attempt to emulate what the artist is doing as you read. Using the same techniques on different images can obviously give you totally different results.
There is a small hands-on section (26 pages) at the back where you have to download the images to work with. Come on guys how about a CD..? You also have to download a total of 49 files off the web if you want all of them AND they are all largish TIFFS instead of jpgs so be prepared for a long download session.
Basically if you want to be a digital vouyer and have a perve at how others do it without having fun yourself buy this book. If you want to get down and dirty and have heaps of fun then look elswhere. I have read many good PS and Painter books but for me this is not one of them. I might add I am a very experienced PS user and more than a fair Painter user and while the author certainly knows her stuff the book for me is a major letdown and certainly not for a new user looking for a good start to take them to an intermediate level.
Bridging the Digital Disciplines.......2006-10-07
Artists create by combining and extracting elements, often employing diverse techniques, to express ideas. Sue Bloom's new book brings her background as a teacher and digital artist and painter to the reader by showing how different artistic methods can be combined to create a work richer than any single medium alone could provide. She does this, not just by describing her own work, but by inviting 21 other major digital artists to share their eyes and techniques. Of course, she provides some excellent chapters on the "basics" of digital creation in Photoshop and Painter, but her book's unique strength, I think, lies in going beyond all of the usual "How to" books. It is a book which bridges these different digital disciplines. It covers collage and panorama creation, along with artistic tools in Photoshop and Painter while at the same time has a large section on "Artistic Considerations" (which includes "Experimentation" ideas). Bloom's first sentence begins with the question: "Where does that kernel of inspiration come from?" She brings us many tools to use. Along the way, she offers inspiring and thoughtful quotations from artists throughout history. I took great comfort from her quote from Emerson that "Every artist was first an amateur." An inspiring and truly unique book. BRAVO.
A great book for learning new techniques and skills.......2006-08-26
This is a great book for the curious and creative artist who wants to use Photoshop and Painter as their tools for expression. The author provides plenty of information, step-by-step instructions and illustrations to help the reader go through the process and create his/her images. The book is not an introduction to basic Photoshop or Painter. The book is for the artist who wants to improve his techniques and learn new skills using these programs. You can practice, and apply the new skills and I'm sure that you will notice immediately the improvement on your technical skills.
The chapters on Collage are excellent and the author provides a step-by-step guide in the creative process of a diversity of images. She inspires you to use the newly learned techniques to create stunning collages. The chapter devoted to creating panoramic images is superb. You will enjoy this chapter because you can use any digital camera to create great panoramas and you don't need to invest in expensive equipment.
You will love the chapter on filters; you can practice and create new versions of some of your favorite old images. The chapter on Essential Photoshop and Painter techniques is a must for everyone who wants to be proficient with the tools of both programs. This chapter has a step-by-step approach to the method and you'll have plenty of illustrations and instructions to learn how to master the tools. The book provides five projects for you to practice some of your newly acquired skills. I'm sure that this book will help you find inspiration and will motivate you to go out and create great images with this wonderful programs. This book is a must in the library of every photographer and artists who uses digital technology.

Painting Ease.......2007-04-02
I enjoyed the instructions in this book. First, a detailed explanation of how to complete each type of stroke is given. Then, the book has detailed information on how to paint many different types of flowers and arrangements. And finally,(this is the best part) it goes on to explain how to create original arrangements depending on the surface space the painter has to work with. This book was well written and easy to follow
My Favorite Donna Dewberry Book!.......2007-03-31
This book is awesome! I have many of Donna's books but this is my favorite. I've been painting using the One Stroke method for about 5 months and I'm HOOKED! I've taken 13 classes with my local OSCI since then, which is the best way to improve your OS painting skills, but this book is a great compliment to those classes. Donna uses about 15 pages in the beginning of the book to go over materials, techniques and colors. Then she covers 50 flowers/blooms using 2 pages for each. The picture of her finished piece is a full page and of course very colorful. Then on the opposite page it lists the brushes and paints you'll need and a step by step guide on how to paint the flower(s). But it doesn't stop there. She uses 14 pages at the end to cover filler flowers and floral composition. Finally the last 2 pages are a gallery of floral project ideas. This is an invaluable resource! Enjoy!
If ou are into this, get this one first........2006-09-01
I checked out all her books and this one is the most complete. It shows most of what she paints on TV. Her other books cover mostly one type, this is packed.
I can't give you any more details because I didn't purchase this to learn her technique; I am a watercolorist and was looking to see if she had any interesting movements of the brush that I haven't seen yet.
donna dewberry flowers.......2005-09-14
Beautifully presented book and worth every penny. However, patience is needed by the bucket load and I suggest to have taken lessons before trying these lovely paintings.Once you know how the world is your oyster .
A lot of information!.......2005-07-19
This is my favorite One Stroke book thus far. However, I had already purchased her video "flowers for all seasons" and the "one stroke painting course" and "easy murals" books, so I had a feel for the basics. Her books tend to have some of the same information in each (which I find annoying), but "flowers A to Z" has a lot of variety, so you can learn a lot of techniques just by going through and trying the different flowers. I disagree with the reviewer who claimed the pictures are of poor quality...they look fine to me. Overall, I think this book is a good value.

If you are looking for art Ideas from around the globe this is an excellent book. It also has mini test to give students. I tried several of this activities and students had a great time. The projects turned out fabulous.
fantastic book, not your usual paper plate/macaroni art.......1999-07-08
one of the best multi-cultural art books I have run across in the past 15 years. Ranks right up there with Brown Bag Ideas. Worth every penny!!
Thorough art lessons of many countries........1998-07-01
I think the author did an excellent job in putting together the various art activities. Her format of introducing the history of the particular art work, giving step-by-step instructions, and following up with review questions for the students makes this book the best organized one I've seen.

Beautiful flowers oriented designs.......2003-10-28
"Garden Party: Appliqué Quilts that Bloom" contains everything you need to know to make absolutely beautiful appliqué quilts. Every aspect of appliqué quilting is covered including quiltmaking basics, equipment, stitching techniques, appliqué techniques, and even the patterns for the quilts in the book. These quilt examples consist mostly of either pastel or bright colorful flowers, hence the title "Garden Party".
"Garden Party: Appliqué Quilts that Bloom" is a highly recommended purchase for anyone interested in quilting and especially so if you are interested in appliqué techniques in quilting or flower based patterns. You will not be disappointed.
Gotta Have It!.......2003-07-24
This is a beautiful book with great-looking projects. I heard someone exclaiming over it at my local quilt shop and I just had to see what they were talking about. I couldn't resist it, either. What I liked was the combination of patchwork and applique both. The quilt designs were innovative, too. I'm anxious to try one of the projects soon.
Book Description
A properly implemented and managed RCM program can save millions in unscheduled maintenance and breakdowns. However, many have found the process daunting. Written by an expert with over 30 years of experience, this book introduces innovative approaches to simplify the RCM process such as: single vs. multiple failure analysis, hidden failures analysis, potentially critical components analysis, run-to-failure and the difference between redundant, standby, and backup functions. Included are real life examples of flawed preventive maintenance programs and how they led to disasters that could have easily been avoided. Also illustrated in detail, with real-life examples, is the step-by-step process for developing, implementing, and maintaining a premier classical RCM program. Senior management, middle management, supervisors, and craftsmen/technicians responsible for plant safety and reliability will find this book to be invaluable as a means for establishing a first class preventive maintenance program.

Transform Maintenance at your Plant or Facility.......2006-04-15
RCM or Reliability Centered Maintenance is a great method for determining the right maintenance work to ensure asset function. It changed maintenance thinking from "fix it" to "maintain function" and avoid breakdown to begin with. It has been almost 30 years since Nowlan and Heap's original report on Reliability Centered Maintenance and yet - confusion and mystery still abound. Many RCM projects fail to realize the improvements that are desired at the outset.
The new book by Neil Bloom peals away the layers of fog the suround RCM and provides a clear way forward for anyone interested in improving reliability. Even small and midsize plants and facilities can take the information provided by "RCM - Implementation Made Simple" and begin to perform Reliability Centered Maintenance to improve plant performance.
I manage a community of over 55,000 maintenance and reliability professionals and I am recommending the each and every person read this book! Seasoned RCM experts along with people who are brand new to the concept will find things they can put to immediate use.
Thanks Neil for empowering the maintenance and reliability community and for giving us a tool we can all use as a way forward for improved maintenance and reliability.
Great book on creating The Reliability Program for your plant.......2006-03-24
I am a Reliability Engineering Coordinator at a chemicals plant. I have worked in Design and Manufacturing, Smelting, and Mining. I started my career as a junior design engineer, rising to a senior reliability engineer, and finally a Reliability Engineering Coordinator.
At previous employers I performed RCM exercises with great results, but this required enormous amounts of personal energy and time. In my current role I have already started using the language in this book to build greater support for the RCM processes amongst management, operations, engineering, and the critical frontline tradesmen and operators. The response has been nothing short of amazing.
The RCM processes described by Neil are not only powerful at aiding people in the understanding of true RCM, but the simplicity allows for quick progression through an RCM project. This book is a must read for any organization considering RCM.
I have recommended this book to my peers at my current employer and past employers and I would recommend it to any other maintenance and reliability professional.
Great book on a misunderstood subject.......2006-02-18
I have worked in the maintenance business for 37 years. This is the first book I have read that addresses the age old problem of PM's on equipment in a clear cut and easy manner. In the industry we end up either performingpreventivemaintenance too often or not enough and often times not on
critical components. This book is a must read for anyone that is developing a PM program or looking to enhance their present program. By performing preventive maintenance on the RIGHT equipment and at the RIGHT time companies can realize greater efficiency and profits.

French beading is a simple yet lovely art, beautifully described here and illustrated in color with more than 70 close-up, how-to photos that show the intracacies of growing a garden of 30 flowers with delicate seed beads. Forty additional illustrations present the exact bead placement for each particular flower part. Just string the beads on wires and bend them into realistic, three-dimensional shapes; a helpful introductory section covers all the basics. You can indulge your creative passion almost anywhere--and the nicest thing is, they last forever. Construct a budding dogwood branch, frame a mirror with wisteria blooms, or make a holiday wreath of holly and gold-tipped pinecones. A gallery of vintage pieces illustrates the rich history of the craft.

Pretty projects. Good instructions........2007-02-14
I bought this book because I saw some beaded flowers at a craft show and I thought I'd like to learn to do it myself. I had a little difficulty with the techniques in the beginning, but with practice and by frequently referring to the very nice, detailed pictures in the book, I finally got the hang of it and completed a fine looking poppy (if I do say so myself). I have since complete two other projects. I wouldn't go so far as to say the projects are easy or simple, but they are imminently doable. And last but not least, they provide the beader with a real sense of accomplishment.
Beaded Flower Excellence.......2007-01-04
The most beautiful & easy to understand beading book on this topic I've ever seen. I love it! Great pictures & information. Highly recommended.
Elegant little book.......2006-08-02
Photography is excellent. Very clear instructions. Good for new crafters as well as those with experience. Variety of patterns is excellent.
Very nice beading book.......2005-12-29
This was the first French beading book that I bought. As a beginner, it was a little hard to figure everything out at first, but with some practice and the detailed pictures in this book, I was able to come up with a nice finished product. The things I liked about this book, specifically, were how the first project illustrated the four basic techniques that would be used throughout the whole book. Once I fished the poppy, I almost couldn't believe it would be that simple! I also liked how each project was unique by demonstrating a new concept or some variation of the original four basic techniques (for example, striping the tiger lily and split loop for the dogwood).
What I didn't like too much about this book was that some of the flowers occasionally use previous techniques or ones that are covered later, and so a bit of page turning had to be done.
All in all, the concepts are explained really well, the designs are lovely and the book itself is quite pretty if you just want to admire the pictures, so I highly recommend this book.
Great for beginnners!.......2005-04-03
This was the 4rd book on french beaded flowers that I picked up and I found it to be the best so far. The instructions are very detailed with photos of each step along the way. More detailed than other books I have tried to learn from. If you prefer photos showing the steps as opposed to just hand-drawn diagrams, then this is the book for you!
The pictures of finished projects are gorgeous! Wonderfully inspiring, especially the "fantasy flowers" near the back of the book.
The only minor quibble I have regards the order of introducing new techniques. Some of the advanced techniques are introduced in later chapters, yet are referenced in earlier flowers. The instructions with say "see page such-and-such for this technique", and you have to flip several pages later in the book to find out how to finish your flower. I think it would have been better to have each new technique introduced in order. But that is just a minor complaint based on my personal preferences.
Overall, a stunning book, well worth the money!
Book Description
Bloom draws on nearly twenty years of directing and teaching experience to convey the full experience of directing for the stage, as well as the mindset that all successful directors possess. More than a mere set of guidelines, Thinking Like a Director details a technique that covers every facet of theatrical production, from first reading through final rehearsals. The key to directorial thinking, Bloom asserts, is a dual perspective--an ability to focus on both the internal lives of the play’s characters and the external elements of the play’s structure. In this illuminating, engaging, and accessible handbook, the art of dramatic interpretation and the craft of working with actors are integrated into a single, unified method.

A humorous and nostalgic look back.......2006-12-22
Back in the eighties, I considered the "Bloom County" strip to be the best cartoon feature of the time. Therefore, reading this book was a humorous and nostalgic look back to another time in America. There were references to presidency of Ronald Reagan and the Iran Contra scandal, the nuclear arms race, the evil empire of the Soviet Union and the first president Bush.
For one moment, I forgot the time context of the strip. On page 50 boy genius Oliver W. Jones has created a teleportation device. In the final caption of the segment, his father asks him, "Could you put George Bush into the White House?" To which he responds, "OH, WHY DO YOU ALWAYS EXPECT THE IMPOSSIBLE FROM ME?!" At first, I thought the reference was to George W. Bush, but then realized it was about George Herbert Walker Bush. I laughed at that one because it certainly could be applied to both.
Cartoon strips provide us with humor and a cynical look at the political and social forces of the time. Therefore, if you have little knowledge of the events of the eighties, then you will have a difficult time understanding many of the cartoons. However, if you lived through them and were old enough to be politically acute, then you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
Told You!.......2005-03-12
Ok for you Get Fuzzy fans, this is what I am talking about. On the cover of this collection we see Berkly Breathed using the Bruce Springsteen album collection set(from Christmas 1987) for inspiration. Take a look at the cover, Are You Bucksperienced just plagerizes this idea.
Bloom County 4.... or 5.... depends on...........2004-06-16
Okay - Bloom County Babylon, the 4th Bloom County book was really a compilation of material contained in the first 3 books. So.... depending on if you want a chronological collection of the BC Strips, or to complete ALL of the BC Books, this is either the 4th or 5th volume of Bloom County, and Berkeley Breathed is still in high-gear producing the funniest 'toon strip I've ever read. And by "funny" I mean laugh-out-loud, roll on the floor, tears streaming down my face, people coming into the room to see "WHAT are you laughing at?!!!?" kind of laugh.
In "Billy and the Boingers" Steve Dallas, the sleazy womanizing ambulance-chasing lawyer, finally decides that even HE has had it with defending murderers and child abusers. Bill the cat inspires him to hold auditions for a "New high-profit heavy-metal rock band". Requirements are only "Need to know 3 chords and be able to grimace musically".
Along the way Opus the Penguin gets engaged to sweetie Lola Granola, and the new Heavy Metal Group "Death-Tongue" makes their pitch in Los Angeles to recording companies, ending with a memorable visit backstage at an Ozzy Osbourne concert - back when Ozzy was the "Elvis of Heavy Metal". Back in Bloom County Steve discovers that he must give up cigarette smoking or his life expectancy is 6 months. He has Opus tie him to a chair where he is the model of self-control for 38 whole minutes before he breaks down and tells Opus "Get me a (...) cigarette before I stick you in a blender". Things get worse from there.
As in the previous volumes Breathed does a fantastic job of creating a surreal universe full of people and critters that we care about, but who are most importantly..... funny.
B.B. just kept getting better.......2004-03-27
Bloom County was without a doubt the most insightful, funny, and beloved comic strips of all time. It's rabid following has never gotten over the disappearance of Opus and the Gang from the funny papers. That's because nothing has ever been able to take it's place. Could you imagine Opus, Bill, Steve, and Milo tackling today's issues? What besides G.W. Bush and Saddam would be in the anxiety closet. Alas, we can only remember the good times.
This is one of my favorite Bloom County books. It mostly took on an issue that has always been important to me, rock n roll. The gang takes on the PMRC by forming their own metal band Deathtongue. After battling Washington though, Steve Dallas caves in and Billy and the Boingers is born.
Long live live Opus. He is sorely missed.
Basselopes and penguins and rabbits, oh my........2004-03-09
I've always had a slight preference for the early "Bloom County", before things got quite this surreal. Which is not to say that I don't enjoy this one; there are a great many very funny bits in here, such as Steve Dallas facing the government commission led by Tipper Gore in defense of the lyrics of the rock band "Deathtongue", which featured Opus the penguin on tuba (very appropriate for a heavy-metal band, wouldn't you say?) Hodge-Podge the rabbit on drums, Bill the Cat on electric tongue, and Steve Dallas a lead singer and songwriter. All of which is certainly pretty surreal. But sometimes it got even weirder than that, if you can believe it.
Not the best of the "Bloom County" books, and certainly not the one to start with if you aren't familiar with them, but funny and worth owning if you enjoy the series and don't have it.

Wonderfully researced by people who love musical theatre--brief paragraphs of backstage and unknown situations behind the scenes-- a must for the musical theatre "groupie"
As big as Broadway !.......2007-08-21
What a wonderful book. Over 330 pages in this oversized tome chock full of pictures. Maybe some would disagree about which shows belong in a list of the 101 greatest Broadway musicals, but the authors have done a great job here. Each of the shows is broken down to details (opening date, number of performances, cast of characters, actors, synopsis, songs etc), wih several photographs for each. Also included are features on some of the key people involved, plus special sections on "Flops", "Star Turns", "Off Broadway", etc. This would fit well into the collection of any lover of Broadway musicals and would make an awesome gift.
Great for all it does........2007-07-08
There's an old show business maxim: Always leave 'em wanting more. This book is so good at what it does I only wish it had gone further -- shows like "New Faces of 1952", "The Girl Friend" and "The Boy Friend". Admittedly one can find references to them in other reviews and they weren't the blockbusters most of the included shows were. But, hey, it is great fun to read and why fret that it fell slightly short of my personal concept of perfection?
Great Book, but still...............2007-05-08
wish that some of my favorites were included:
Oliver
Miss Saigon
Sunset Boulevard
Man of La Mancha.
I really think it is sad that these aren't included, especially Man of La Mancha.
Broadway Musicals: The 101 Greatest Shows.......2007-01-14
This was a gift for a Broadway buff. She loved the book, but was a little disappointed that "Rent" wasn't one of the shows included.
