Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pretty but not a good reference book.......2003-03-24

This book is an extensive collection of nice pictures of over 350 different succulents. They are arranged in scientific name order. However the descriptions for each entry are just text describing the plant. There is not even basic information like the hardiness zone so you will know if the one you like will survive your winter. The text does not directly reference the picture location so you have to find the picture key somewhere on each page ("This page, left to right ..."). The index is really just a table of contents - common names are listed under the scientific name instead of having a separate entry ("Purple Emperor" is indexed as "Sedum, Purple Emperor"). Get this for the pictures then get The American Horticultural Society "A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants" for the reference data.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to succulents.......1998-11-23

Beautifully illustrated with photographs by the author, this book is a splendid introduction for those wanting to enter the wonderful world of succulents.

The book can really be divided in two parts. The first being concerned with an introduction to succulents and the basics required to grow, reproduce, set out etc. Much of the information here is brief but there is enough "meat" to ensure that anyone approaching succulents for the first time will succeed in developing a very attractive garden - the potential for which is amply illustrated in the colour photos.

The second part of the book is devoted to an A-Z guide of popular succulents. This is perhaps where the book falls down a little as "popular" depends on a variety of factors. As this book is written by a New Zealander who has obviously visited the western USA, "popular" refers to succulents popular in these locations. Nonetheless the guide does give the main families of succulents and is therefore an excellent start.

All in all a very worthwhile book for the beginner and if the succulent bug doesn't bite you (and it probably will) this book will meet all your succulent gardening needs.

The author of several gardening classics, including The Dry Garden and The Damp Garden, British horticulturist Beth Chatto has once again documented her gardening adventures in Beth Chatto's Gravel Garden. A woman with a true love of soil (no matter how temperamental) and plant life, Chatto set out to create a lovely, viable garden in her gravelly, sandy soil. The challenge to find flowers and shrubs that would survive and thrive in this dry environment became an eight-year experiment that resulted in a beautiful, original gravel garden ranging over three-quarters of an acre.

Chatto takes us through the process step by step, beginning with conceptualization. How can she turn a former parking lot into a prospering garden? She notes that

We all find a haze of bluebells beneath beeches, primroses on clay soil beneath oaks, or a damp meadow golden with buttercups more magical than anything we can create. However, in our gardens we look for more. We learn to make plant associations that extend the season, to create pictures worth living with throughout the year.

Season by season, year by year, Chatto records the planting and maintenance of her gravel garden, reveling in the fecundity and tenacity of nature. Her prose is clear, concise, and at times dryly academic. Readers who have a wide knowledge of botany and an understanding of the Latin names of plants will have a leg up on more casual gardeners. Filled with pictures by Steven Wooster, who has photographed many of Chatto's gardens, the book is a visual delight. The vibrant ruby petals of clematis leap off the page and you can almost feel the spiny green stalks of the Onopordum acanthium. --Dana Van Nest

Book Description

One of the great gardeners of our time shares the story of a horticultural victory.

"How on earth did you do it?" visitors ask Beth Chatto--for in creating her gravel garden, she surpassed even her own renowned mastery of unpromising sites. It was the ultimate challenge: to create a decorative garden on three-quarters of an acre of poor, heavily compacted, gravely soil with no watering, even in times of drought. That her plants survived such cruel conditions and blossomed into a garden of such beauty offers fascinating hands-on lessons. Here are thousands of tips on applying her principles, on the poorest of soil in areas with the sparsest rainfall. Chatto's always witty and engaging voice chronicles her voyage of discovery in this delightfully inspiring must-have for any and every gardener.

5 out of 5 stars Beth Chatto is a star!.......2000-08-22

Finally, a book that lives up to, and exceeds, all expectations. Beth Chatto is one of a highly respected group of plantsmen and women in Britain who knows what she is doing, isn't afraid of making mistakes and doesn't mind sharing it all with us. This book is easy to follow, logically set out, and even the use of taxonomy in naming plants makes you eager to look them up to see what Ms Chatto is describing. The descriptions of plantings through the seasons are like the development of a symphony, from the debut of a plant in its season, through its performance and twilight, to the entrance of its successor in the drama, with punctuations and particular mention of any encore performances of which a plant is capable. Ms Chatto knows her stuff. Anyone living in similar conditions to Ms Chatto's in Britain, Australia or America should find this book a must.

5 out of 5 stars A Fertile Book of Discovery.......2000-08-03

After so many years of having, through necessity, to read only technical and quick reference gardening books. It was such a great pleasure to find a quite place in my garden and be totally engrossed in Beth Chatto's Gravel Garden. Billed by the publisher, Blooming Books as ' a book for Australian conditions ' which is true but this book pertaining to gardening with drought resistant plants will be of interest to anyone who gardens in an arid or low rainfall area, or to those who want to have 'a good read' about one gardeners' vision. Who, as she describes, gardens in the 'driest and most windswept piece of soil in England'

Beth's book has all the requirements of any good reference book but it is more than that. I can only describe it as a cross between a novel, diary and reference book. It is an autobiography of her garden, the trials and tribulations, if you will, of creating a specialised area. This is a great benefit to the reader as she has made all the mistakes and now passes on the right way and what to do, to avoid disappointment. We travel through descriptions of the garden as the four seasons come and go. Descriptions that could hold their own in any non fiction novel. Beth paints with words the obvious love of her garden and gardening.

Any great diva needs an equally great accompanist. Beth certainly is blessed, for the photography of Stephen Wooster compliments her book so well and any adjective I use to describe his images would not do him justice. They have to be seen to take in their beauty and his artistry. When I review books I have one main criteria in mind. What is on the front cover is delivered within. Beth Chatto's Gravel Garden past this one in the first 5 pages.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superbly illustrated and brimming over with valueable information!.......2005-08-14

More and more people are becoming interested in succulents due to their largely drought tolerant natures and their definite fire prevention advantages. If you are new to succulents and had only one book to choose this should be it. Even if you know quite a bit about succulents this book could still be of value. It's that good.
What the beautiful cover seems to allude to, the book itself totally delivers. The amount of information provided in such a small book is gratifying. It's only 224 pages, but you are unlikey to find this many varieties of succulents pictured in such exquisite detail even in books twice this size. And there aren't simply specimen pictures. Throughout the book there are pictures of the plants arranged in garden settings to give the gardener an idea of how these plants can be combined to create a truly magical garden.
But don't think that DCGWS is just pictures. The written information it provides is every bit as satisfying as the pictures. It is such a complete book on the subject of succulents with respect to their background, the techniques you need to know to handle them safely, their design potential in the garden, and their use in special conditions that unless you want to become an expert on the subject you may never need to buy another book on succulents once you own it.

5 out of 5 stars The culture notes and photographs are a gardener's treasure........1998-08-14

Plant growth habit and culture notes are all too rare in succulent and cacti volumes. This expertly assembled book captures the succulent plants at their optimum phase and accurately records botanical names and growth requirements. I also utilize to accurately identify plants that I use to create living succulent wreaths. The section of 'Bringing the Desert Indoors' is a welcome invitation to indoor gardeners every where to enjoy these sculptural beauties year around.

5 out of 5 stars Best book in my library........1998-04-05

One of few books dealing with gardening in the dry southwestern climates. Most of the book is devoted to "Plant Selector" which describes the plants, hardiness, cultivation needs, etc. Other sections deal with "Garden Design", "Techniques" (cultivation etc.), and, " Special Conditions." If you have one book on succulent gardening, this should be it.

Cacti and succulents are among the most bizarre and beautiful plants a gardener can grow—and included here are some of the most remarkable of them all: stapeliads and ceropegias. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has brought together master gardeners from across the country, who show how easy it is to cultivate a collection of cacti and succulents on a windowsill or under artificial lights. They also introduce varieties that are hardy enough to grow outside in most climates. There are chapters on medicinal plants and succulent bonsai, plus advice on how experts groom their plants for competition. Finally, readers can learn how to help save the cacti and succulents that are threatened with extinction in the wild.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice book with basic info and beautiful ideas.......2005-03-20

I just recently fell in love with succulent plants, so my husband bought me this book (and a few others) for Christmas. I enjoy leafing through it for ideas. It has lots of beautiful photos with ideas for growing succulents and cactus. The book is about 100 pages and when you open it up, most pages have a full-page photo on one side and text on the other. The text discusses some background info on the plants pictured and a "How to do it" section that describes the plants needs. One thing I really like about this book is that as you page through the book, the pages that cover specific plants have a summary of info of that plant in the margin. This always includes the basic info you need - light, watering, fertilizing, etc.

This book isn't as in-depth as some, but it's more of an idea book. It has photos of plants both indoors and out. It's a great basic info & idea book for the beginner.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay..........2002-10-06

Luckily I found this book on sale because I probably would have been a lot more disappointed if I had paid more than [price]for it. The beginning section I found to be rather interesting, it's more of a general care section. The rest of the book however are tips for more specific species. If you have one of these species of cacti or succulents, it is a bit informative. If you're looking for a very general book, with some general tips, it's an okay book. If you're looking for something in depth, don't get this book because you'll be highly disappointed.

      2 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing.......1998-01-14

I originally looked at this book because it had information on something that I was interested in -- propagation. However, I am now a little bit wiser.

The reason this book is disappointing to me is only 1/3 is related to general care of cacti. The other 2/3's of the book focuses on common species of cacti and how to take care of that particular species. I also find this to be inaccurate, because care of species also depends a lot on what type of environment you put them in. My recommendation is if you are looking for a book on how to care for cacti, look a little bit longer.

      Book Description

When the cactuses bloom in Big Bend National Park, their vivid pinks and purples, reds and yellows bring an unforgettable beauty to the rugged Chihuahuan Desert landscape. In fact, many people visit the park just see the cactus blossoms and the wildflowers. If you're one of them, this book will increase your enjoyment by helping you identify the wonders at your feet. And if you've never been to Big Bend when the cactuses are blooming, you'll discover here what you've been missing.

Douglas B. Evans describes twelve kinds of cactus-living rock, topflower, stout-spined, hedgehog, pineapple, button, barrel, fishhook, nipple, chollas and pricklypears, and Texas nipple-and their individual species known to occur in the park. Color photographs taken by Doris Evans and Ro Wauer accompany the species descriptions. As you hike or drive through the park, you can identify most of the cactuses you see simply by leafing through these splendid pictures and then checking the descriptions, which indicate the cactuses' characteristic features and habitat.

To make the book even more useful, Evans also briefly defines the parts of a cactus, explains how scientific names work, and offers a quick introduction to the geography and ecology of Big Bend National Park and the Chihuahuan Desert. With this information, you'll enjoy not only seeing the cactuses of the Big Bend but also being able to tell one from another and knowing just what makes each one special.

This book is just what the non-botanist needs to identify and enjoy the "cactuses" of Big Bend NP. It is concise, accurate, and beautifully illustrated with photos taken within the park in natural habitats,...not in artificial greenhouse settings as with other cactus books. And, yes, in today's American English, cactuses is entirely proper.

        Book Description

This year the Huntington celebrates the centennial of its spectacular desert garden, one of the largest such collections of cacti and other succulents in the world. Visitors to the twelve-acre garden marvel at its more than 3,000 species, including the vivid blue and green Puya, a rare type of bromeliad; the Lithops, or "living stone," whose camouflaged leaves mimic the shape and color of rocks; and the dazzling red, orange, and yellow torch-like blooms of the winter-flowering aloe.
In this beautifully illustrated volume, Lyons draws on decades of experience with these unusual specimens to explore the Huntington's desert garden. He tells of its early development, describes its principal collections, and gives instructions on the care and landscaping of desert gardens.
